his month’s edition has been a total surprise for me. At the beginning of June, I had no idea who was going to be on the cover for either the New York or Hamptons editions. And now, all I can say is wow! Bill Clinton!! Yes, this is an exclusive with the 42nd President of the United States. I want to thank Trish Regan (our cover girl in May) for making this happen. She pulled amazing information out of him, and I think you will learn a lot about the economy, the NSA and his family’s future plans! Enjoy – I did when I read it! In our Hamptons edition, we have the eloquent animal advocate, Jill Rappaport. My assistants and I traveled out to her stunning estate in Watermill, and we loved every minute of it. She was gracious, informative and funny! We thank her for her time and know you will learn a lot about her, why she loves animals and what she does to help them! Another wonderful interview was with Shohreh Aghdashloo, the multi-faceted and talented Iranian actress of House of Sand and Fog fame. She sat down with Anna Ryan and me at a local café to discuss her

happy with the interview that I asked him to write for us, and he’s accepted. We’re happy to have him on board! Another exciting update is our securing of famed Vanity Fair columnist, George Wayne. GW (as he likes to be called) wrote a stunning piece on the wonderfully swanky Le Sereno in St. Barth’s. We are happy to have him working with us and excited to present his beautiful piece to you. Resident wouldn’t be Resident if we didn’t have a wonderful travel piece from Kitty Pilgrim. This month Kitty explores Rhinebeck, where she keeps a vacation home (she promises I’m allowed to visit soon). We also have travel pieces on: Anguilla, Provence, Monaco & Nice, Cartagena, Philadelphia and the Best Beaches of the East Coast, to name a few. Dining, theater, family, real estate and fashion are also represented. Our hope is that you’ve seen an improvement in these sections and use them as your guide. We do the work, so that you can enjoy!

I was in Chicago for the third annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting where the focus was on restoring growth to our economy. Bloomberg TV was the exclusive broadcaster from the event and, while there, I had the opportunity to speak with the creator of the event himself, Former President of the United States Bill Clinton. Bloomberg viewers heard his views on like to bring money back for use in an infrastructure bank) to the NSA, to Syria and energy independence in the White House in 2016, he delivered a line that drew both laughter and applause from the audience.

Regan: Warfare has changed, in large part because of technology. Edward Snowden said that he could pretty much wiretap anyone, even the President of the United States, if he were to have the e-mail. How comfortable are you with that? Clinton: Well, it is what it is. One of the big challenges of our 21st century world will be to try to provide some right to privacy without being naive about the need to use our ability to track electronic communications to try to prevent terrible things from happening in the United States and around the world. A lot of the things he said don’t register with this PRISM program, which is designed to track communications overseas. They have prevented a very large number of harmful actions. Now, if - when - there is the slightest evidence that anybody has penetrated the meat of the conversations for then I think there ought to be action to protect that. this technological stuff and put everything in e-mails and expect, given the nature of the technology, to have the same measure

Regan: One of the big things here at CGI is public-private partnerships. How do you get the private sector more involved working with government to encourage economic growth?

Clinton: President Bush tried to do it when

Clinton: I think that one of the things that should be done is to pass legislation creating a national infrastructure bank. That used to have a lot of bipartisan support, and I think perhaps we could get that again as part of the overall effort to reform corporate taxes. We lag behind most of our competitors in Europe and Asia in attracting private capital to public infrastructure. It’s slowing down our productivity growth. It’s slowing down our economic transformation. It’s costing us an enormous number of jobs in the short run. And so I still think that the greatest opportunity we have for public-private cooperation is in infrastructure, including in the energy transformation. Regan: We’ve got more than a trillion dollars sitting offshore; companies keeping their money overseas. Could they repatriate

They said you bring this money back, pay like 5.5 percent on it. It was generally viewed as a bust economically, including, I think, by him, because they were very disappointed that almost all the money went to increase the incomes of the corporations that repatriated the money and to grant dividends and buy back stock. But, assuming the money has already been taxed in the jurisdiction where it was earned, they could let them bring it back tax free if they put some percentage of it in an infrastructure bank which would have a guaranteed rate of return. That could be tax free. So for example, if you got a 6 percent guaranteed rate of return that was tax free, if you repatriated let’s say $100 million and you agreed to put $10 million or $8 million into the infrastructure bank with a rate of return of 6 percent, that might work to seed this thing. Let’s assume it would take you eight, nine, ten months to agree to how we should change

the corporate tax rate more or less according to what Simpson-Bowles recommended. Lower the maximum rate but cut a lot of the deductions and credits and stop trying to tax overseas income that was really earned overseas. Every other country has adopted a territorial corporate tax system – every other wealthy country. If you operate in Ireland and you actually have a business there, the corporate if you repatriate $300 million you paid percent. And nobody else is doing it. So if you ran a corporation, you wouldn’t bring that money home.

earned in the Cayman Islands or some other tax structure, and we know better than that, easy to prove that there was not an ongoing real business operation in place X, Y or Z, and they basically parked the transaction there just to pay no taxes. But in all these other countries that have lower

tax rates than we do, for us to tax people on the difference is nothing but an incentive for them to keep the money overseas. Every time I ask somebody about this who doesn’t favor this position, they say that if you let people repatriate the money, you will just encourage them to take business that really occurred in the United States and they made the money somewhere in Europe, somewhere in Asia, somewhere else and they had a real tax system over there and they paid the taxes over there, I say let them bring the money home and invest it however they want. Regan: Do you think there’s a chance it’ll go through? Everybody’s talking about corporate tax reform. Clinton: I do. It’s a question of whose ox gets gored. For example, ironically, many of the corporations that pay the highest taxes are those that are in sectors where we have the greatest potential to grow. For example, in manufacturing. For example, Dow

Chemical probably pays right at or just over they have manufacturing operations in Everybody knows what the deal is. We could get more manufacturing jobs if they paid in the range of the international average, which is somewhere between 24 and 26 percent. Regan: President Clinton, any chance that we might see another Clinton in the White House in 2016? Clinton: Chelsea’s still too young (laughs). Look, I spent most of the last six months trying to reorganize our foundation and make sure we had a good space for Hillary to come in and do her projects, and Chelsea spends half her time on the foundation now because she knows more about all this – how it should be managed and organized than I ever will. So this has been fun for me. I don’t know what Hillary’s going to do, but whatever it is, I expect to support it. But I think – let me make a serious comment. I think it really matters who the president is.

TRAVEL It may be summer in New York, but it’s not too early to start planning winter travel. The Caribbean is always appealing and Anguilla is particularly striking. The British West Indian Island just north of St. Maarten and St. Barts has long enjoyed unfair advantages over its Caribbean neighbors. With over thirty gorgeous white sand beaches on just a sixteenmile-long island, Anguilla has consistently won the “Best Beaches in the Caribbean” title from travel press and visitors. The island remains a true West Indian charmer: reggae sounds, tropical breezes, great Caribbean cuisine, and an abundance of activities make Anguilla a top destination to kick back, enjoy, and play. It is no surprise that this island is so pristine. In 1980, the government of the virtually hotelfree island decided to limit development to discreet, small hotels and elegant, upscale resorts. Thirty plus years later, the island has stuck to this policy; this means there are no casinos, large cruise ships, or shopping malls. Large-

scale hotel developments have been limited as well. While many Caribbean islands have been over-commercialized, Anguilla continues to retain its local Caribbean charm. Nevertheless, the comforts of luxury properties are surely available. High-end villas have become the de-facto choice of residence for visitors. These properties are unique and private—spanning thousands of square feet and offering amenities such as gourmet concierge services. These villas average about $1,ooo a night and up, depending on the time of year. The Grand Outlook Castle and the Villa Nirvana truly epitomize such mega-villas. The Grand Outlook castle has 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths: accommodating up to 10 guests. Built in 2007 on the second highest point on the island, the views are spectacular, with St. Barts, St. Maarten, and St. Kitts visible from its high perch. While very secluded, the villa is a just short drive to many of the island’s attractions, including many of beautiful

Marseille: Long considered the melting pot of Europe, this age-old port town with a multicultural population is fast becoming transformed with top luxury hotels, world-class restaurants and a thriving art scene. Marseille has been crowned the European Capital of Culture for 2013, and nowhere is it more apparent than in the newly opened MuCEM. On a pier overlooking the water, this museum has 1 million cultural artifacts dedicated to Mediterranean heritage and will be a concert venue for world music. Its photographs, videos, paintings, collages and sculptures give voice to the immigrant, the disenfranchised and the displaced. MuCEM makes a powerful statement about the human condition and spirit. Another must see is the Van Gogh to Bonnard exhibition from June 13 to October 13 at Palais Longchamp, Musée des Beaux-Arts. Stop at Notre Dame de la Garde basilica with its on the altar. I love walking around the buzzing their catch of the day off the boat. You can hop a ferry for the short scenic ride to Chateau d’IF made famous by Alexander Dumas in The Count of Monte Cristo, as the prison of the hero. Food lovers will be wowed by the region’s tasty Mediterranean cuisine. I savored excellent seafood and great sea views on the terrace of stylish Peron Restaurant. Dinner at Miramar on the Vieux Port with the house specialty - the famous bouillabaisse - was a standout. The just-opened luxurious 5 star Intercontinental Hotel Dieu housed in a historical monument overlooking the port, boasts a Clarins Spa, beautiful terraces and glorious views. The moment you open your eyes in Avignon you see the gorgeous light that has attracted so many artists to the region. You also notice that people are smiling a lot here, quite different from the more serious Parisians. I asked a local about that. She laughed and said, “The sun makes you smile.”

I drove into sun-drenched St. Tropez, playground of the rich and famous, passing palm trees, the shimmering Mediterranean and golden sand beaches. Brigitte Bardot, legendary beauty and sex And God Created Woman here. She became the town’s muse.

In the morning, locals shop for dinner at Les Halles, the indoor market sweets. I sampled the tasty Provence goat cheese, learned that the southern French prefer olive oil to butter for cooking, ogled blood sausage, loved the red wine bread and discovered that a Provence macaroon is quite different from a Parisian macaroon. Afterwards I headed to the main thoroughfare, Rue de La Republic, and then turned down lovely windy cobblestoned streets passing ateliers, trendy boutiques, eateries, picturesque squares, charming buildings with wrought iron balconies and shops with yellow and red

With ceiling fans and swaying palms, the ambiance is old Havana. Just as I tasted the mouth-watering grouper with tamarind sauce, the band started playing a soulful Cuban song and in walked Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who had not been seen in the city for two years. I met him; he was lovely.

Tcherassi’s Hotel, Colombia’s leading fashion designer. Sip a cocktail in the buzzing bar before you sample the creative international cuisine at the very hip and sceney Alma Restaurant housed in the Hotel Casa San Agustin. Relish a sumptuous meal at El Santisimo where French-trained chefs prepare classic Colombian dishes. Enjoy sublime regional fare at Restaurant Don Juan including out-of-this world grilled shrimp with passion fruit sauce and pico de gallo. After dinner, the action is at the clubs where revelers dance to live orchestras playing salsa and the sounds of Cuba. With many choices, such as Cachao and Bazurto Social Club, my favorite is Café Havana, where Hillary Clinton also danced the night away.

At sunset, I headed to Café del Mar, atop the ancient walls with a view of the illuminated city and the Caribbean. arely a day goes by that I don’t feel blessed to live in New York City — whether it is the easy convenience of the grocery store down the block that is open 24/7, or the ability to hail a cab with a wave of a hand, reasons to be in love with this city unfurl at every corner. One of the very few drawbacks we do face as Manhattanites is those scorching summer days in the city — the days that no amount of time in air conditioning or cool cocktails at happy hour can help you cool off. Dotting your summer calendars with weekend-long beach getaways is always a good way to combat this: now is the our top picks for beach getaways along the Eastern Coast.

There’s something about the oxygen in the Hudson Valley that does that to you. Sleep is heavy, the way it used to be when you were a child – dreamless. I have been coming to Rhinebeck all my life. My family, descended from Dutch settlers, arrived in this area in the mid 1600’s. So it was no surprise, after roaming the world as a journalist for several decades, that I decided to call this home base. I can attest that not much has changed here in thirty years. Rhinebeck remains unspoiled, which cannot be said of other popular resorts within two-hour driving distance of the city. The village of Rhinebeck is quaint, yet sophisticated. you are the astute jetrosexual on the prowl for a supermodel binge, have we got the destination point for you! It turns out that this is one of the best kept secrets of St. Barthelemy - that 25 square kilometers of rugged terrain in the French West Indies which the glamour set have been haunting for years. Well, it turns out that there is one chic resort property where, on any given week on any given month, not only in high season from November to May, you are more likely than not to check into a villa or bungalow at Le Serneno only to catch sight of a willowy beauty such as Doutzen Kroes or Alessandra Abrosio checking in right behind you. For Le Sereno is the St. Barths home away from home for the contingent of Victoria’s Secrets supermodels and the accompanying photographers, make-up artists, wardrobe stylists and other assorted hangers-on when they are on location in beautiful St. Barths, which is all the time. On any given day of the week you can turn to page 3 of the New York Post only to see a supermodel cavorting in a next-to-nothing string bikini, say on Shell Beach in St. Barths, snapped from a discreet lens in the bushes off the famous St. Barths beach. There is no denying that these various and multiple continuous Victoria’s Secret photo shoots have become a thriving cottage industry for the local ‘’paps’’ (paparazzi) who sell these bootleg images all over the globe, but it seemingly makes a four day stay at Le Sereno all the more worth it. For this is where they eat, sleep, spa and rest their pretty heads when they hit the sack. Yes, it is always here by the picturesque, windswept Grand Cul-de-Sac property

A Revolutionary Tour of Central Virginia: The Homes of Jefferson and Monroe and the Home Battle Field By Demetra M. Pappas July 4th invites educational travel for adults as well as families. While my idea of educational travel started with graduate school, a road trip (or easy Amtrak journey) provides for both. This Central Virginia Presidential Home and “Home Battle Field” plan of battle suits either way. Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville is a superb place to start; as Jefferson built and rebuilt the house and garden for over 40 years, it appealed to the academic in me. For a pre/post tour of a different sort, lunch nearby at Michie Tavern and learn that reading (or even walking along the path of history are not self-limiting) and for homework, get A Taste of the 18th Century (Michie Tavern ca. 1784). Jefferson’s postpresidential retreat at Poplar Forest in Bedford is a smaller, more intimate experience (where I recently attended an erudite and politically humorous conversational debate between Jefferson and Benedict Arnold).

The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, has contemporary cultural learning opportunities, as well as Jeffersonian architectural genius. The Small Collections Library is a true treasure trove, with small exhibits and a view of open stacks of rare books behind gleaming glass – access without risk. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia has rotating innovative exhibits. Shohreh Aghdashloo’s

Road to Success By Christopher A. Pape & Anna Ryan

With a voice reminiscent of Kathleen Turner and as beautiful as a Persian queen, Shohreh Aghdashloo has roared onto the Hollywood would be wrong. It was only through hard work and perseverance that she honed her one of the most beloved actresses on screen today. We sat down with her at a neighborhood café to discuss her new book, which details her life’s journey from her homeland through England to Los Angeles, her Academy Award nomination for House of Sand and Fog

that had nothing to do with my life at home, with my parents, which was beautiful, but not as meaningful as I wanted it to be.” The day came when he proposed to her, and she saw it as a sign to really pursue her acting career. Her opportunity came when her husband told her about an audition for the role of a British queen for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Upon completing her audition, she was of the workshop told her, “Congratulations little girl, you won the contest for playing the role.” This was the impetus for becoming a successful actress in Iran.

Shohreh’s graciousness. This was on display when our waitress at the café recognized and lavished attention on her. Rather than demur or be annoyed (as many Hollywood actors are wont to do) Shohreh basked in the attention: “It’s my reward when people recognize me in public. If people recognize me it means that they have connected with my character. It means that I’ve been convincing. They like us (actors) so if they approach us, it means that they want to tell us how much they love our work. And as actors, we should be appreciative instead of being rude to them.”

Shohreh was torn, but her desire for acting grew when she met a man who taught her all there was to know about live cinema. “For cinema is all about metaphors and symbols.” This became a whole new world, “a world

After graduation, a playwright friend of hers called her and said he had written a play with a lead role in it for her. She read it and immediately fell in love. “It was a political play,” she said. “It dawned on me that I don’t have to change my profession. I can still be an actress.” The play was put on stage for sold out. Once the United States heard about the play, they wanted to bring it to Los Angeles. When a riot broke out to see the play, she decided she wanted to live here, a place where people would break down the door to see her perform.

language.

Her love for people is evident and translated into her desire to be an actress. “I wanted to become an actress since I was seven years old.” Yet, her parents did not support her love of acting. They wanted her to go to Germany to become a doctor. That was the plan for her and her three brothers. “It was very popular to send your kids to England or Germany to become doctors,” she said.

the border, where “we were all claiming we were going to Turkey for vacation.” When she made it to London, she heard Margaret Thatcher give a speech which made her want to pursue politics instead of acting. “So I studied politics. I studied international relations. I committed myself to this for four years,” she stated.

Living in the United States proved to shower Shohreh and her second husband with new believing that there was no place for us in Hollywood; we’d have to create our own work. We’re both artists, and we could create from scratch - so we did,” Shohreh said. Her House of Sand and Fog, developed her English-speaking acting career in the United States. She was eventually nominated for an Oscar. Since then, she has X-Men, The Lake House, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the TV series 24.

a new chapter in Shohreh’s life. She was faced with the dangers of living in Iran and the Prime Minister at the time had ordered all the airports to shut down. I thought this is it, they’re going to shut down all the airports and then they’re going to shut down all the borders until no one can leave, so it’s better if I drive out while the borders are still

Every day Shohreh is reminded of how blessed she is to be where she is now. It’s our favorite lines from the interview shows this bright light of her compassion: “It’s only in comparison that life becomes meaningful. When you see a hobo you see how lucky you are to have a shelter. When you see a sad face then you realize how fundamental it is to wear a smile. And all the time I make an effort to smile at people.” Her hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and the world

s a comfortably middle-class Baby Boomer with a passion for fashion, I do have to exercise some frugality. Fortunately, this comes naturally to me since I was raised by parents who were children of the Depression and passed on their values to me. This column is a continuing commentary on my efforts to justify fashion and frugality. I’m very ingenious, wearing things in a way that they were really not intended. For instance, I have a rather expensive sarong-type black wool skirt by Donna Karan. I’ve had it for years, but it was a mistake. I never should have bought it. Every time I wore it, the big knot in the front made me look fat even though I’m actually very slim. But as I say, it was expensive, so the thought of throwing it out bothered me. Finally, I put it in a pile to give to charity. But before I gave it away, I suddenly had an “aha” moment. Why not wear it as a shawl? I now have a beautiful, luxurious black wool shawl and no one would ever suspect it’s really a skirt. It has no zipper, buttons or closure and is very wide. Remember when half-slips and petticoats were part of every woman’s wardrobe? Well, I unearthed a beautiful black taffeta one with embroidery on the hem. It was buried in the back of a drawer, and I forgot I had it. Into the pile marked for charity it went. And then another “aha” moment. Why not wear it as a skirt? Why not, indeed. I wear it in the summer with a tee shirt over it, belted loosely at the

By Phil Chan Produced By Joe Alexander New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Sara Mearns joined the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall, to perform “A Dancers Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky.” The avant-garde work blended music with ballet, live animation, video, puppetry, and circus arts. Born in South Carolina, Mearns began training at age three and by thirteen she was being coached by former NY City Ballet prima ballerina Patricia McBride who danced under George Balanchine. An early test for her as a young dancer came was when she competed at Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition. “It was very challenging. I didn’t realize the competition would be so good. It encouraged me to up my game and to see what other young talent was out there. It gave me a different mental state and the drive to get to NY. I knew that I wasn’t going to be like those other girls; I needed to work harder.” yagp.org. It was through these trials that the as the driving force in her dancing. “When I was studying with Patty McBride, that’s when it really sunk in that the School of American Ballet and the Balanchine style is what I wanted to do. When she would teach us variations in class, there was a certain sense of musicality. You felt free. You felt happier. It feels good on the body. You don’t feel like you’re struggling or you’re not going to make it; I’m just going out and dancing.”

In continuing to push her boundaries Sara signed onto “A Dancers Dream” in collaboration with the Phil’s Music Director Alan Gilbert, Director Doug Fitch and Producer Edouard Getaz of Giants Are Small. The choreographer was Karole Armitage, who has been affectionately dubbed the “Punk Ballerina.” “I had met Karole through mutual friends and then I saw a performance of Armitage Gone! Dance downtown, and I thought it was really fun – Very punk rock. When I got attached to ‘A Dancers Dream’ and heard that she was going to do the project as well, I got very excited because I knew we would work well together. She has a background of working with Balanchine, she knows the style, she knows my dancing, and she’s a huge fan of New York City Ballet. We did a story ballet, so the steps had to correspond to the story. Her rep is really fun: You’ll be doing a classical step and then all of a sudden you will do something completely funky. You don’t really do that a lot at City Ballet.” The process of creating a new work pushed Mearns into developing her own points of view. “We are in the studio six hours a day for two and a half weeks. Every day is something new. I was able to work with Karole and the other artists to create this story. A lot of times it’s not about the steps – it’s asking, ‘who I am interacting with? Is it going to read well to the audience?’ I have never been able to do that before at this level, and put my opinions in there. The dancing thing is easy for me to get and to pick up - it’s creating the entire world around the story that was so exciting,” said Sara. nycballet.com/Dancers Sara Mearns in ‘A Dancer’s Dream ‘ at the New York Philharmonic

The Historic Village Latch Inn at 101 Hill Street in Southampton

Paradise Found: The Village Latch Inn By Isaiah Negron

The understated chic of the historic Village Latch Inn in Southampton made it a favorite of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, who championed both the preservation and restoration of the White House and the turn of the century “cottages” on the East End where she summered as child. Jackie admired the architecture of the Latch, which was built in 1901 and is attributed to the legendary architect Stanford White. Jackie wanted the buildings protected for future generations. In 1974, Marta and Martin White fell in love with this charming property in the Village of Southampton and bought it. The Whites shared Jackie’s vision of the conservation of The Latch, located at

Chef Will Foden and Wine Director Jean-Luc Le Du recently re-crafted the menu at 83 ½, the farm-to-table Italian gem on the Upper East Side. Owner Vincenzo Mangiafridda’s previous culinary treasure served as the muse for his newest. The idea behind 83 ½ began to ferment in his mind while developing Gino’s Pizzeria, a 20-year-old beloved neighborhood spot, and in between trips to the family farm in Caccamo, Sicily. The heart and soul of Italian food is grounded in home cooking, and such intimacy is what makes 83 ½ special. The restaurant only seats 40 and patrons can observe the bustling kitchen from their tables or vie for the chef ’s counter kitchen. Regardless of where you sit, the owner is known for making everyone feel like family. The small, farm-to-table restaurant utilizes seasonal produce—a rare, but coveted trait within Manhattan’s dining landscape. The

menu strongly favors Mangiafridda’s Sicilian roots and incorporates the freshest produce available. We started with a couple of small poached tuna, and baccala polpettes (braised enough to whet our appetites for the meal to come yet left us awaiting the subsequent courses. For our second course, we went with the “Rabbit Siciliana” and grilled orata. The rabbit was more delicate than you would expect and came with a chickpea side. The orata was wrapped in escarole and accompanied with a Sorrento lemon and extra-virgin olive oil. Our time in the restaurant was reminiscent of the long, indulgent, and multi-course repast that is typical of a meal in Italy itself. 83 ½ is truly a neighborhood gem, but better than a

As your Curmudgeon-in-Residence and dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, I must say I am so annoyed at the high prices of Broadway shows. Years ago I used to see every show on Broadway. No sooner did a show open, I read the reviews, and promptly bought tickets. That was when ticket prices were reasonable--some as low as $10 or $15 for previews. And no, that was not in the days of Flo Ziegfeld. Today it’s not at all unusual for shows to charge over $100 for tickets--the cheaper tickets. Naturally, the people who go to the theater today are tourists who feel they must see at least one Broadway show when visiting New York, the very wealthy, and young kids who will wait on line for hours to get discount or standing-room tickets. The entire middle class has been shut out except to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. For a couple to go to the theater today could easily cost $500 when you factor in the tickets, dinner, parking and a babysitter. How many people can afford it? It’s become something you do to celebrate a special occasion and only after some thought and consideration. Sadly, the reason the theater is so expensive today is because of unions. The stagehands, carpenters, musicians, etc. are making a good living and that’s wonderful, of course, but they’ve made it impossible for middle class people like themselves to enjoy the theater. Today the unions tell the producer how many people they must hire. Even if a show is set up so the actors move the scenery themselves, the producers still have to hire a certain number of stagehands who sit backstage and play cards. It’s wonderful that the stagehands and others so important to the Broadway theater are getting a good wage but at what cost to theatergoers? How do they get enough money to support their families and people still get to enjoy the theatre? It’s a conundrum, or, as Yul Brynner said in “The King and I,” “it’s a puzzlement.” Miriam Silverberg is a freelance journalist and owner of Miriam Silverberg Associates, a boutique publicity agency in Manhattan.
