being on TV was learning to edit myself. This show is done in the same vein as my radio show. I did celebrity interviews from Suzanne Summers to Nas the rapper; I’ve also had both on my TV show. I’ve also had Ask Wendy and I used to give my opinion on the hot topics of the day – like I do now. NYR: What do you like about doing TV? WW: I don’t have to pretend that I’m so cool that I know every word to the new Katy Perry song. Even though this is hard work here on TV, because there are so many intricacies, but the hours are better in TV. I’m done for the day by about 1pm every day. NYR: How did you break into the radio business? WW: I fantasized. By 6th grade I knew that I wanted to be a radio personality or a news anchor. I was never an undeclared major. I majored in communications and I minored which makes me a New Yorker; we have the best media. And I just knew, so I got involved with the college radio station. After being in radio for twenty-three years and being really successful at it – I was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. One day my husband’s phone rang; it was Mort (Marcus) and Ira (Bernstein) they comprise the company of Debmar-Mercury (the

jaguar you see at the end of the show is their company). They told him they heard about me and that they wanted to do a show with me. Eight months later I’m on TV. NYR: Talking about New York’s media personalities – is there anyone that’s WW: I like a lot of them and I know you want me to say Oprah. NYR: (Laughs). Why would you think that I would want you to say Oprah? I want you to say the truth! WW: Well…the truth is there is no modern talk show host that I draw from. But Mike and I came home from school and everyone else was watching cartoons, I used to like to watch Mike Douglas and Dinah Shore. I used to love the formats of these shows when the hosts would come out with the celebrities and the guests would talk to the hosts; they then would introduce the next celebrity who would come out and it became a gabfest. There was something about that easy, breezy chat and the idea that this woman, Dinah Shore, has this show but she’s friends with everyone. Those two were really my earliest NYR: What’s interview?

your

favorite

celebrity

WW: I love talking to Simon Cowell. I love talking to Vanessa Williams. She and I are the same age, but whenever she comes around, with her beauty and her poise, she makes me wilt like a twelve-year old. And I think it’s comical, in my own head. But the truth is I don’t have a favorite. NYR: Is there a celebrity that you’ve always wanted to interview, but haven’t done yet? WW: Heather Locklear. Here’s the thing: Heather Locklear was an original friend in my head. I felt so close to her that I had to come up with a term and now I use that term here on the show. “A friend in your head” is a celebrity you’ve never met but if you met them you know you would be very close. NYR: How do you give back? What do you do for charity? WW: We support the Girl Scouts. I was a Girl Scout. It was one of the things that set me apart from my friends, when it was time to apply to colleges. My mother was a Girl Scout and when I was a child, she was a Girl Scout leader. I just love them. NYR: I’m sure you get this question a million times, but tell us: how did you come up with “How you doin’?” WW: When I was exiled to Philly I was with a stupid morning show full of stupid guys. They just kind of threw me into the morning

show and expected it to work. Every good show has got to have gay. Gay is entertaining no matter what. Our obligatory gay person happened to be straight. His name was Shantay and he would do theater of the mind where you hear the door open up and he would say: “Hey everybody” (she imitates a very effeminate voice to capture Shantay acting gay). When a heterosexual guy is so straight he doesn’t even know what he’s doing. So I decided to play along. That’s how, “how you doin’?” was born. It’s my best drag queen voice and I can’t talk like that the whole time but it started off as a drag queen just saying hello to Shantay; and we would have a conversation – me as a regular Jersey girl and him as gay Shantay. It was born in 1998 and I brought it back to New York with me because “how you doin’?” has morphed into a really great way to break up a room and make people understand that I use my powers for good, not evil. When you are a large person and self-assured, people tend to be frightened of you. My famous line breaks up a crowd; lightens people up and then we can get down to business. NYR: What’s your favorite restaurant, place or thing to do in the city? WW: to Serendipity. I also like Victor’s Café for nostalgia. We were just there recently. My husband and I have been married for fourteen

WW: I do. I cook three times a week. Look, I know I sound amazing. I am. Here’s the thing, I’d be kicked out of the girls club if I didn’t. It’s a lot of work and I’ll be perfectly honest with you I cook a homemade meal including a side, a piece of meat and a vegetable at least three times a week. I do it because I like to nurture that family life that I’ve made for myself. I am a housewife who happens to have a career. I love tending to my home. P.S. On a scale of 1 to 10 I’m a 4 or 5 cook. NYR: Working on anything new – any scoops you can give us? WW: I’m working on my Adorn line by Wendy Williams – that’s for QVC. On the show my stylist puts me in colors; off the show I’m a New Yorker and I love wearing black and then you just change your adornments. It’s an accessories line. How you adorn is what separates necklaces. I have my bracelets that I’m introducing; I go back on QVC in May. I’m working on my shoe line, which will be available online, in department stores and boutiques this fall. My husband and I also have a production company and we are looking to take my autobiography and put that on either the big or small screen. We are in the process now of shopping and seeing what kind of production deal we can get.

relationship we were at Victor’s every Friday night. They had no idea who we were; we never made a reservation, but we would go and wait and be patient for a table. After going there for about a month straight – never with friends, always just the two of us – they would give us a booth right away. For the whole time, they thought I was a Broadway girl and I was meeting up with my boyfriend after a show. It’s only been since I’ve been on TV that they’ve realized who I am. Now we go back for sentimental reasons and for consistently good food. I also love Porterhouse in the Time Warner Center. NYR: Do you cook at home? Resident

Later on, and even an art academy for young ladies, where art, embroidery and music classes were offered. It became a police station in the thirties, and more recently, a boarding house for students from all over the state of Baja California Sur, until the current owners, led by the Salas family, acquired it. The hotel has been in service since spring 2010. As mentioned in last month’s article, The Last Word, where I remarked that I was on my way to Baja – I am very happy to report that I had a most memorable time at the Guaycura Hotel. With only fourteen rooms and a staff to guest ration that any hotel would be envious of, the hotel sits at the forefront of my thoughts. I loved the Mexican details, from furniture to tile. Mention should also be made of their food. Their restaurant offers the best quality in food with excellent and courteous service. With its travertine marble charming Mexican style fountain, Guaycura restaurant is perfect for any meal. Their cuisine is a delicious combination of traditional Mediterranean dishes Throughout the seasons, the Sea of Cortez

Their number dwindled over time due to the outbreak of epidemic illnesses and clashes with colonial troops during the Spanish domination, although a few of them may have gradually left their tribal lifestyle to join the new towns. They disappeared as a distinctive ethnic group around the turn of the eighteenth century. What makes the hotel distinct from other Mexican properties is the attention to detail. The hotel combines a totally personalized quality service with an astonishing architectural design, exquisite décor, and unique art work. And add this to the view roof deck (the best in town and perfect gem of a hotel. For example, I especially loved how my window overlooked the town and I could watch the locals go to and fro on their daily business. In New York, that’s depressing but in Mexico it was magical. In addition, the hotel has a stunning swimming pool and a spa at the sky deck

There are multiple flights and cariers that fly to Baja Sur. Most people choose to fly into La Paz or Los Cabos. Both airports are equidistant from Guaycura. Private transportation from the Los Cabos and La Paz airports may be arranged by the hotel. Round trip from the Los Cabos airport would cost $180, slightly less from La Paz, for a party of up to four people. You may also rent a car at either airport from a variety of car rental companies. Driving time from La Paz is one hour. From the Los Cabos airport it is one and a half hours. Resident April 2012

But what can I say; and what power of the pen do I have that will entice you to go? How can I compel you? For a guy that’s traveled the world – take it from me that Guaycura is special. From the moment we entered the town and rounded a corner to come upon a quaint piazza to the moment we walked through the hotel’s doors – I knew the trip would be a great one. The weather was divine, the food excellent, the views spectacular and the people friendly. Talking about people, one of the owners, Guillermo, was both generous in his time and his spirit. He is there often and he is one of the reasons that you should go. property that must be experienced. The town, Todos Santos, is the perfect backdrop for a relaxing and charming getaway. Great for a family vacation or even better for a romantic escape, the hotel has it all. I urge and plead with you to go. From one with wanderlust to travel to those readers that have the same feeling – put Guaycura and Todos Santos on your list, it will be well worth it.

My fascination with Hawaii began when I first saw the movie ‘ South Pacific’ and its idyllic island ‘Bali Hai.’ The movie – and the real life Bali Hai - was filmed in Hawaii, a tropical paradise that intoxicates with palm fringed beaches, impossibly blue waters, rainbows, spectacular sunsets and balmy trade winds perfumed with the fragrance of exotic flowers. Not surprising that a recent survey found the happiest person in America lives here. From the moment I arrived, I was smiling and buoyant – uncharacteristic for us New Yorkers. The friendly aloha spirit was delightfully contagious. Kaua’i, ‘the Garden Island,’ is known for its lush rainforest, unsurpassed wilderness and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. If you like pristine secluded havens with swaying palms and sapphire blue water, this place is for you. Dramatic sea cliffs, balmy trade winds and verdant trees create a magical, mystical, romantic aura.

Maui, the most diverse island, boasts palm lined shores, red and black beaches and dramatic contrasts between mountain and sea. Rent a convertible and explore the scenic landscape. There are plenty of spots to pull over, take a dip and bask in nature’s beauty. The west coast is famous for world class resorts and The Westin Maui Resort & Spa,

For a real thrill, hop on the Gemini whale watching catamaran in front of the resort, and see the celebrated humpbacks swim next to the boat, pop up and breach. The best snorkeling in Maui is a two minute beside a sea turtle! After a hard day of fun in the sun, I pampered myself with an island

Kauai’s cachet has risen as it was home to George Clooney in the Oscar winning movie, in The St. Regis Princeville Resort, on the gorgeous green northern shore of Kaua’i, where I stayed. Sometimes, something impresses you so much, that attention must be paid. As soon as I entered The St. Regis, I was smitten. Rome is an extraordinary city, a living museum to the vast treasures of ancient Rome, Medieval and Renaissance periods and a modern day vibrant metropolis. Since this timeless city has so much to offer, it may be helpful to begin with an open air bus tour or a guided walking tour. Of course you can just put on comfortable shoes, take along a guidebook, and explore the winding cobblestone alleyways with over 2,000 years of history and enjoy the scents of delicious Italian cuisine. A 3-day Roma Pass can be purchased for admission and transportation discounts. The best way to see Rome is to combine your sightseeing with shopping and relaxation. The Coliseum (Colosseo) is a good place to begin. This is the largest monument in existence from ancient Rome, often called Rome’s greatest architectural wonder. In ancient times it was the site where crowds of 50,000 or more spectators would enjoy various forms of combat. The gladiators are most associated with the Colosseum. and rebuilt by 126 A.D.), the splendor and elegance of Roman architecture can be experienced. Once a temple to “all the gods”, it was converted to a church in 608 A.D. and has been extremely well preserved. The structure is considered to be an architectural masterpiece, but the architect remains unknown. The Roman Forum (Foro Romano) is one of Rome’s most important archaeological sites, containing 900 years of history. From Capitonline Hill you have an outstanding view of the Roman Forum. The ancient sites of Rome, named for its founder, Romulus, have been chosen as an UNESCO world heritage site. For a true feeling of the past, the Appian Way, just outside of Rome, is surrounded by ruins which will make you feel as though you have journeyed into antiquity. The Trevi Fountain is the most famous of Rome’s many beautiful fountains and is a perfect example of the 18th style. The popular legend is that if you throw a coin in the fountain period is the Spanish Steps; the wide steps are the largest in Europe. At sunset, the Spanish Steps provides gorgeous views of Rome’s famed seven hills. The world’s smallest sovereign state is Vatican City which can be accessed through St. Peter’s Square. Visitors of all faiths will be legendary St. Peter’s Square is where the Pope walks out onto a balcony to greet the faithful. The Vatican Museums house art from antiquity and the Renaissance as well as modern times. All the palaces and galleries can be overwhelming. Most outstanding is the Sistine Chapel by Michaelangelo. The frescoes on the ceiling and walls were painted between 1508 and 1512. Rome’s skyline is dominated by St. Peter’s 448 foot tall dome, designed by Michelangelo. No building is Rome can be built which would be taller, thus preserving the classical skyline. Rome has many lovely parks which can provide a relaxing break from sightseeing. Of course, you will want to sample Rome’s epicurean delights! The food of Rome can best be described as a gastronomic miracle. Cappuccino is enjoyed for only at breakfast while espresso is the choice for later in the day or evening. Pizza is as extraordinary, as is pasta, seasonal ingredients. Local wines are great and not very expensive. Crostata di Ricotta (cheesecake) is a popular dessert. While strolling, Dining is leisurely, as Italians like to linger over their meals. Outdoor seating will give you a chance to relax and people-watch.

The mild and warm Mediterranean climate will keep you comfortable as you explore Rome. A visit to one of the world’s most important tourist destinations would not be complete without some shopping. Many shops can be found on the Via Del Corson, the main street of modern Rome, which is also a popular location after dark. It should be noted that this street is one of the few in the city to be completely straight. Via Dei Condotti is a leading shopping there are major fashion boutiques of young designers. For the city’s most expensive shops, head over to Via Veneto. Campo Dei Fiori is a large market square with outdoor shops amongst Medieval and Renaissance palaces and churches in the piazza. Along the way, you will meet the exuberant, friendly Romans.

Hopefully you have tossed a coin into the Fontana di Trevi so you can soon return to the splendor of Rome. The luxuriously comfortable JFK will be even more enjoyable as you partake in the sumptuous presented all at once at any time you may wish. Starters include warm mixed nuts and crudités and dip. The appetizer is smoked salmon and herb marinated shrimp. Salad is served and there’s a Grass Chicken with Achiote Sauce, Rosemary Garlic Shrimp and Four Cheese Ravioli. For dessert you can savor ice cream sundaes made with Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and a selection of fruit and

It doesn’t get any more stylish than The Benjamin Hotel in midtown Manhattan. With its central location on 50th Street and Lexington Avenue this understated New York hotel caters primarily to the business traveler– super easy for hailing a taxi or jumping on the subway when running late to a meeting. But while the business traveler will enjoy easy access to mass transit, the leisure traveler will surely delight in the hotel’s inas I discovered on a recent overnight stay. The story of this hotel dates back to its owner, Benjamin Denihan, who rose up from small business owner of laundry and dry cleaning shops to hotelier. Slowly growing his empire, Denihan became a visionary and entrepreneur in the real estate market and later, the hotel industry. In 1999, the Denihan family acquired the Emery Rothdesigned building on East 50th Street and named the hotel in honor of the company’s founder.

Upon my arrival, the attentive staff was almost overshadowed by enormous opulent mirrors gracing the lobby walls and a lovely arrangement of cherry blossoms summoning the arrival of springtime in Manhattan. Above the reception desk a beautiful portrait of Benjamin Denihan silently welcomes you into his “home.” All of their 209 rooms, ranging from an intimate 250 square feet to a sprawling 1,620 square foot VIP Suite, have added touches of modern kitchenettes are standard here. My room, a luxury one bedroom also had a wrap around terrace, large living room and a kitchenette with a fridge to rival most found in NYC apartments. For a midtown hotel, I found the noise level surprisingly quiet. And at The Benjamin, sleep and comfort is of the upmost importance. So much so that I found an entire sleep menu next to my bed with amenities to ensure a peaceful slumber. From white noise machines to a pillow menu

(I ordered the “satin beauty” recommended for those who sleep on their side), The Benjamin realizes the importance of a good night’s sleep, in a city that never does. The hotel enjoys a lively after-work crowd at the lounge located in The National Restaurant cuisine under the direction of acclaimed chef, Geoffrey Zakarian(and who graced Resident’s cover in January). The Benjamin Hotel, which had not previously been on my radar, is now top of my list for not only visiting business associates and out of town friends, but a great place to pop in for a cocktail after a stressful day.

Age is relative. In the United States we revere as ancient structures and institutions that that reach over two or more centuries. Europeans laugh at that. Walk through the streets of Rome and you can still feel the hoofbeats of the Circus Maximus; in Paris the famed Notre Dame Cathedral has been inspiring awe for 849 years. The United Kingdom doesn’t consider anything less than 500 years to be old. One of the oldest, if not the oldest pubs in the United States is the famed Fraunces Tavern on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan. It was the site of Washington’s farewell address and more recently, the site of a terror bombing. Built as a residence in 1719, it was sold in 1762 and converted into a tavern and stopping point for travelers coming by on horseback and coach. Just outside of London two ancient watering holes, The Ostrich and The Green Man are still providing sustenance today, making Fraunces look as modern as McDonald’s. While that passes for nearly ancient in this country, Fraunces Tavern was born some 613 years after The Ostrich pub was built in 1106. England’s third oldest pub, situated minutes from Heathrow Airport on High Street, Colnbrook, Berkshire, is still serving up warm beer opened its doors. Colnbrook is a beautiful little village situated within hailing distance of the busy air hub and providing a respite for travelers wise enough to get away from hotel food and seek out local watering holes. Walk into the Ostrich and you’ll probably be the only outsider to venture in. The low ceiling gently absorbs the conversations and laughter of diners, virtually all locals, and sends the sound back in soft waves. Originally named “The Hospice,” it was eventually linguistically corrupted to its present identity. Built when Henry I (1065-1108) was on the throne, there is a dark side to the pub, one that has locals insisting it is haunted. violent deaths. There is no evidence that unique boiled beef was ever served to other patrons. Their sideline came to an end when they dispatched a wealthy clothier named Thomas Cole, but neglected to rein in his horse. When the horse was found wandering about the village, searchers found his body at a nearby brook; thus giving the village its name of Colnbrook (Cole in brook). Other notorious visitors to the pub included the famed highwayman Dick Turpin, who used it as a hideout. King John is also reputed to have stayed here on his way to Runnymeade to sign the

For a woman who was once weaned on coffee (as a child, a spoonful in a cup of milk was the gateway to a lifelong addiction to caffeine), there was an introductory course to tea on trips to London, followed by a move there for graduate school (and serious addiction). Tea (the drink) was a big thing in school (one professor would adjourn like clockwork for 10 late-morning minutes, proclaiming, “I do believe it is time for tea,” which ultimately created a room full of Pavlov-style cafeteria between 2:30PM and 3:30PM was sure to turn up some very strong tea, as well as whoever was sought. Further, a whole subculture referred to the evening meal as “tea,” rather than “supper” (meaning a light post-theater meal) or “dinner” (often referring to a dressy date at a swanky place). No visit to London is complete without “going to afternoon tea,” a very different experience, often involving a hotel and a multi-course meal. Legend has it that this tradition originated with the Duchess of Bedford, who would have servants sneak her a snack because she was tired and found herself cranky in the late afternoon (which we would now attribute to a drop in blood sugar). She started with a pot of tea and some bread, at 4PM, then started inviting her friends to join her for a late afternoon meal of more tea, sandwiches and sweets starting at 5PM at Belvoir Castle in Granthan, Leicestershire (an hour away by rail). Having been to the sumptuous Belvoir Castle, it is easy to imagine an 1800s version of Sex and the City in the country estate. According to legend (and likely, fact), this became a social practice of upscale hostesses.

Perhaps the most famous of all contemporary London afternoon teas is that at the Dorchester Hotel. On London’s Park Lane (also known as Embassy Row) the Dorchester is most famed for the afternoon tea in the Promenade, which was refurbished in 2005 by Thierry Despont. It is a beautiful checks the roses daily in one display) and it is a place to see and be seen. That said, consider the Spatisserie for a quiet retreat, is the place to go if you want a multi-hour girls’ gab (men are also welcome) over champagne and sandwiches in an adult space (guests must be 16 or over). There is an extensive tea menu, which educated (but not intrusive) waitstaff will help guests to select from, based upon preferences expressed. Attention to detail is such that a colleague who is a vegetarian, and politely did not eat the smoked salmon and the chicken sandwiches, was promptly brought an array of vegan treats, including options beyond the traditional, such as hummus sandwiches, all without making the slightest request or comment.

NATURAL LUXURY If you truly want to experience the beauty of Maine, but with all the comforts of a luxury hotel, it doesn’t get any better than Hidden Pond. Two-bedroom cottages also include full kitchens which can be stocked with your favorites prior to arrival. In

Or for a true indulgence, book an appointment at the Tree Spa, nestled into the trees above the lush forest floor. “grand dames,” and after an extensive rejuvenation last year, it’s also one of the ‘Port’s chicest resorts. The rooms at the Tides have a soothing seaside ambiance, mixed with surprising and whimsical contemporary touches. This same eclectic mix extends to the common areas, where traditional white wing back chairs and lamps made from sea shells sit side-by-side with “invisible” bar stools and modern art. The Tides has a fun, energetic bar, and also offers dining. Savor an after dinner cocktail while rocking on the expansive front porch, or dine outside on the patio, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea. Escape to the beach this summer…without the Hamptons traffic! A CLASSIC...ENHANCED Located in the heart of Kennebunkport’s lively Dock Square, the Kennebunkport Inn has always been a favorite because of its great location, outstanding service, and award-winning restaurant, One Dock. After a just-completed renovation, though, it’s gotten even better. Highlights of the renovation include a new lobby and common area, a sun terrace with outdoor fireplace and cozy deck chaises overlooking the Kennebunk River, and a new bar at One Dock. The changes also extend to One Dock’s menu, with a greater emphasis on small plates that showcase Maine’s abundant local seafood and produce. The Kennebunkport Inn is also a great place to stop by for cocktails, especially

during summer months, with a daily Happy Hour on the patio. IN-TOWN ELEGANCE Across the bridge in Lower Village is the ‘Port’s newest boutique hotel, The Grand. Though just opening this summer, the Grand already promises to be one of the area’s hottest spots. Located on Chase Hill, the Grand’s expansive windows and balconies provide sweeping views of the Kennebunk River and Dock Square. Elegantly appointed rooms offer a slightly urban feel, with soft, warm tones of Saffron and cream, chic furnishings and marble bathrooms featuring gleaming Waterworks hardware.

QUAINT & COZY CHARM Just outside of town are the Cottages at Cabot Cove, the quintessential New England cottage experience. Each of these uniquely designed cottages features a kitchenette and terrace, which is like your own private garden paradise. Take a rowboat or kayak to explore the Kennebunk River, or just hunker down with a picnic lunch or a good book in an Adirondack chair overlooking the Cove. SECLUDED SPLENDOR Down the winding back road from Cabot Cove is the Old Fort Inn. Once a grand hotel in Kennebunkport’s Cape Arundel, the original carriage house and stables have been converted into elegantly appointed, spacious guest rooms. Decorated in a traditional New England style, the rooms feature rich linens, custom wood furnishings, and four-poster beds. Outside, a spacious patio and heated lap pool feature plush chaise lounges, inviting you to soak up the summer sun. Old Fort’s Club House, with its collection of art deco books, deep leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, is a great place to linger. For families looking to stay a while, a chic, three bedroom cottage is available for rent…a homeaway-from-home on Maine’s southern coast. This hidden gem is perfect for couples looking to getaway—tucked just far enough away to be a tranquil oasis, yet minutes from downtown Kennebunkport. Considered to be a landmark, in the Seven Dials Village section of Covent Garden, this hotel is chic without being ostentatious. It is comfortable and stylish at the same time. Rooted in its community it blends in perfectly with its historic location. It also features a restaurant and bar called Dial. Here you can socialize with the locals at the bar or enjoy a four star meal prepared in modern European style with fresh produce from the local market. Although the meals are impeccably prepared, including but not limited to some exotic wares, this establishment is far from being pretentious. You can relax and sit back and just enjoy the ambiance. Additionally, if you are a business guest you will have six spacious HDguests. They feature touch screen technology and the services of a conference team to ensure that all your needs are being met including your gastronomic ones where up to thirty-two guests can enjoy private dinners. And, lest we forget that this is all taking place in the heart of, in my opinion, the most exciting locale in all of London.

Now that we’re all settled in we can start enjoying all that this area has to offer. Right at your doorstep is almost four centuries worth of history. Covent Garden dates back to Roman times and was an important site for the early Christian church. Monasteries were established here and the monks created elaborate gardens of fruits and vegetables and then sold their bounty to the locals. In 1630 the Earl of Bedford ordered that a piazza be built. Having just returned from Italy and very much impressed with the design of her cities, he felt that the gentlemen class of England be afforded the same grandeur that these Italian cities had class of Brittan. In 1632 the indoor market was built, known as the Apple Market and remained a produce market for centuries. Today although the produce market has been relocated, you can walk through and the centerpiece of the piazza. However, if touring churches is not your thing, right outside its doors you can be entertained for days on end. Mimes, jugglers, street singers and performers of all kinds congregate here to put on shows for the tourists and locals alike. Of course, let us not forget that this is also the heart of Theatreland, as it is known in Brittan and it was Unfortunately this area did not always maintain its dignity over the centuries and did fall into disrepair and neglect for decades. Today however, it is home to the Royal Opera House, numerous theatres, bars and restaurants. Here you can feel what it was like in the

the old and new alike, Covent Garden is enjoying a renaissance and is more exhilarating and exciting than ever before. Although one never has to leave this wonderful neighborhood famous for its shops, bars, restaurants and street performers, don’t overlook the fact that you are in London in the West End within minutes of If you’ve never been to London, then please, as a New Yorker, you must go at least once in your lifetime so that you can know and experience how they live across Radisson Edwardian Mercer Street Hotel where you will feel and be treated like royalty. In the end, upon in time, mingle with the Brits, they are after all our cousins and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!! Bon Voyage!

In a city of indulgence and excess – where the wealthiest can have anything at any moment and demand it at a moment’s notice, it is a breath of fresh air to meet someone that is both talented and humble. Debbie Lori Travin, of DLT Interiors, is a woman whose skill and devotion shine through; and whose love of interior design and home décor are the passion of her life. Best of all, she’s humble about her talent! NY Resident sat down with her to find out what makes her tick, find out what her sense of style is and what she’s working on currently. Sitting in her immaculate Upper East Side apartment, with a stunning terrace and excellent light, it became clear that she brings her love of home décor to her home life as well. Read, enjoy and be inspired! New York Resident (NYR): Tell us how did you get inspired to get into home décor and design? Debbie Travin (DT): I started off in fashion. I was doing buying for high-end couture men’s clothing and I would travel to Italy quite often. It was a family business but by the time my dad was ready to retire, I was having my children and didn’t want to take it over. Actually, it was a good thing. Michael, my husband and I, moved to Westchester. And we found this house that was a total gut job. We were looking for a great piece of land; and if we were going to move out of the NYR: Tell us about the house itself ? DT: It had its own unique charm. It was a Georgian Colonial. The front was brick and it had a balcony. We gutted the whole interior, it looked like a movie set – the front was standing but there was basically nothing behind it. We got an architect - we basically started from scratch new plumbing. It was a huge job. This is about eleven years ago. And my family and friends kept saying that you’re going to need an interior designer to do this – it’s a huge house and a major project. But, I just felt like I could do it – it was a fun project and I ended up completing my house with no problem and without any help. And I realized that this is something that I love doing. Eventually, my architect would take his perspective clients to see my house, as an example and showpiece. They would always ask to get the name of the decorator and that’s how my business was born! NYR: Resident April 2012

DT: I would do projects in Scarsdale and Westchester - mostly renovations. I’d help with bathrooms, kitchens – whatever they needed help with. I started out there, but now I’ve moved into the city and I’m expanding my business here. NYR: What are you working on now? DT: I do a lot of one or two bedrooms. I have a big project for a 4,000 square foot apartment. It’s a redesign project. And I have other projects as well. NYR: How are you getting business? DT: Mostly from referrals, however, my new website is launching shortly. I’m very excited! NYR: What do you like most about decorating and what do you like least? DT: I love the creativity and I never get tired of it. But the down of it is that sometimes, it’s a slow process. I love to create – I don’t love to wait! NYR: How is it working with clients, what is the process like? DT: I take the client’s vision and execute it. Most people know what they like, but they just don’t know how to express it and that’s my job. They also know what they don’t like. You have to edit down for them, do all of the legwork – because it can be overwhelming for them. NYR: What’s the difference between decorating an apartment versus a suburban or single-family home? DT: I have to say, doing an apartment is a snap next to doing a home. It’s just that the space issue is so much less. NYR: What would you say is your favorite style? DT: You want to decorate for the environment. I always used clean lines and a clean feeling. I

like a neutral palate with accents of color. I also like to be eclectic with some antiques. But I think it’s important to stay true to the architecture. The building itself should dictate and guide the interior. Another good barometer is the location. If the house is next to the seaside, a house should NYR: Do you prefer living in Westchester or in the city? DT: The city, no comparison! NYR: Could you sum up what a DLT Interiors house would be like? DT: I don’t want a house to be a design showcase – it looks so decorated. I want it to be your home. A home should show your personality; pictures of your travels, your children – a home should be you. I want that to be your haven, you come and you are home – it’s a place to relax and to reenergize.

Mention of Rita Moreno’s name brings smiles of joy to the faces of her fans and heaps of praise from the Puerto Rican and Latino communities. After all, Ms. Moreno, now 80, known as La Pionera, to be recognized as a Hollywood starlet; and the only Hispanic to have won an Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Oscar. New York Resident sat down with the legend in her beautifully appointed suite in the Waldorf=Astoria Towers, to discuss her life, how she made it and what brings happiness to her life. She was nothing but gracious.

New York Resident (NYR): Can you tell us how you made it; what was the beginning of your career like? Rita Moreno (RM): I was sixteen years old and a talent scout discovered me. He subsequently brought me to Louie B. Mayer, who was staying at the Waldforf=Astoria. My mother and I were brought to the penthouse (we didn’t even know what a penthouse was). And we came up and met him. Six months later I was on my way to MGM Studios in Hollywood. NYR: We have been trying to interview iconic New Yorkers. You are one of them and you’ve been in some great Broadway plays. Do you like doing Broadway and theater? RM: I love theater. I even won a Tony for my performance in The Ritz. And I just performed my one-woman show, Life Without Makeup in Berkeley, CA at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. I loved every minute of it. It’s been immensely successful, but the biggest I hope to bring it to New York eventually. NYR: Story for seven years. NYR: I understand you were disappointed that it didn’t give you more roles. RM: character. I was offered more jobs, but only gangland type jobs and certainly no musicals. It was very disappointing. NYR: You are a native born Puerto Rican and there are many of your countrymen in the city. Do you give back to the Puerto Rican community? RM: Absolutely. I am one of the prides call me La Pionera, the pioneer. Of course, I’m in touch with them. I’ve done talks to inner city kids; and I’m constantly in touch with my community. I think that it’s very important to remain engaged. NYR: You’re one of only ten people to win an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar. Do you feel like you are a role model to a younger generation? RM: I’ve become one, especially to Black and Latino kids. Apparently, a lot of Black kids have been told a lot about me by their parents. They consider me one of theirs – I’m so pleased about that. NYR: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have a new show called ¡Q›Viva! The Chosen. Does upcoming Latino and Latina talent give you a sense of pride? What do you think about it? RM: It’s not just pride. I think that it’s about time. The idea is a fabulous one. What they’ve done is found Latino talent from all over the world. In fact, I’m not sure there are any contestants that are from the United States. They’re from Argentina, Columbia – all over. Some jugglers, some are dancers. It’s quite amazing.

NYR: You used to be a New Yorker, but I’m not sure where you call home now? And how do you like? RM: Berkley and I love it. I lived in L.A. for a number a years and I’m not a big fan of that city. But I do have a pied-à-terre, in the city. It’s right across the street from Lincoln Center – literally – on 65th and Broadway. I love it there – it’s a great section of the city. You have everything – boutiques, bookstores and views. NYR: What’s your favorite restaurant or thing to do in the city? RM: Rosa Mexicano. My daughter and I go there and we make fools of ourselves! Every time we go there we say the same damn thing: “oh god we ate too much! When are we going to learn”? Also, every time I come, we go to the theater every night. I just saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert and just loved it! It is endearing, charming, funny and sweet. All of those things that I didn’t expect, it was. I thought it was only going to be campy. It’s just fabulous. NYR: How is it different being a grandmother versus a mother? RM: It’s different in the sense, you’ve been through it. I helped my daughter through the ropes of being a mother. You know, I remember telling her, when she was pregnant, that you are going to give birth to a little stranger who can’t speak English. He doesn’t know who you are and you can’t say I’m your mommy! Being a mother is scary. It’s very scary. I was the least prepared and I really tried. But my two grandsons are the two loves of my life. I am a hands-on grandmother. My late husband and I built a room for them in my house because they come over so much and stay here. Actually, I get very angry when I hear when people say that the best part of being a grandparent is that you get to give them back. I’d love not to give them back! NYR: You look absolutely fabulous. What’s your secret – do you work out? RM: NYR: Lastly, you’ve worked with them all. Who was your favorite? RM: I loved working with Jack Nicholson in Carnal Knowledge; he was marvelous to work with. And I love Jimmy Garner. We did our th Century Fox. He was really a hunk; he was gorgeous and the worst actor you ever saw in your life. He was mainly just beautiful at that time. Fox did not sign him – we did a scene from The Bridges of Toko Ri. It was like Maverick making love to Medea. I was trying to look very white, because Grace Kelly was an idol to me. I put on this white makeup, so much so, that my teeth looked yellow and my eyes looked red. Resident

The Acting Company is America’s foremost touring repertory company, honored by the Tony Awards for sustained excellence in theater. They have promoted and worked with some of the most preeminent actors in the business including: Kevin Kline, Patti Lupone, Rainn Wilson, among others. Aside from a New York Season each spring, the company tours five months a year by bus and truck to communities all across America where live theater is limited or non-existent. Recently, NY Resident sat down with Margot Harley, the Artistic Director and co-founder with John Houseman of The Acting Company, to discuss the company’s mission, its shows and its famous alumni. FORT GEORGE HOTEL & MARINA

Jon Robin Baitz’s “Other Desert Cities” is one of those plays where a family gets together for a holiday or special occasion and ultimately terrible truths are revealed. The beginning is as sunny as the weather in Palm Springs, where the Wyeths live in luxury and their adult son and daughter visit their parents for Christmas. The father Lyman (Stacy suffered a mental breakdown but has a new autobiographical book dealing with her older brother’s suicide after blowing up a military recruiting station. Naturally, Lyman and his wife Polly (Stafford Channing), are not happy about publicizing a painful and embarrassing part of their past. The surviving younger brother, Trip (Justin Kirk), is a television producer of a Judge Judy type of courtroom television show. Also staying in the house is Polly’s sister, a recovering alcoholic (played by Judith Light). Under Joe Mantello’s assured direction, every cast member gets a chance to shine. John Osborne’s “Look Back in Anger” created a sensation when it opened at the Royal Court in 1956. The latest revival, produced by the Roundabout Theater and directed by Sam Gold, reveals that either the work is painfully dated or that may just be the impression left by this production. The claustrophobic effect of this kitchen-sink drama is enhanced by the fact that the actors remain at the front of the stage, where Jimmy Porter (Matthew Rhys) abuses his wife, Alison (Sarah Alison leaves, her friend Helena (Charlotte Parry) replaces her in Jimmy’s bed and at his ironing board. It was hard to understand why these people put up with each other or why audiences should put up with them.

Look Back in Anger Left to right: Adam Driver and Matthew Ahys Photo: Joan Marcus

Githa Sowerby’s “Rutherford & Son,” was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1912. Critics marveled at the fact that such a powerful work was written by a young woman. In fact, the searing drama about the owner of a glassworks in northern England and the damage he wreaks up on his children was based on the author’s own family. The work is brought to grim life in the new production by the Mint Theater Company, directed by Richard Corley. Robert Hogan is believable as the tyrannical John Rutherford and two of the most compelling of the members of his household are his daughter in law, Mary (Allison McLemore) and his daughter Janet (Sara Surrey). The Mint’s revival is most welcome.

Margaret Edson’s “Wit” is the Pulitzer Prize winning play that is being revived by Manhattan Theatre Club. The central role of Vivian Bearing is brilliantly portrayed by Cynthia Nixon. Dr, Bearing, an expert on the poetry of John Donne, is dying of cancer and the script takes the audience through the stages of her disease and (failing) treatment. The tragedy is leavened by humor. The talented cast, under the direction of Lynn Meadow, includes Suzanne Bertish as Bearing’s academic mentor, and Greg Keller, Carra Patterson and Michael Countryman among others as members of the medical staff. In his one-man show at the Public Theater, “The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs,” Mike Daisey, a self-proclaimed geek, sets forth his obsession with Apple products and his early hero worship of Steve Jobs. He then recounts his travels to Shenzhen, China, where most electronics goods (including Apple) are made. He bravely interviewed workers there and recounts the horrors that they (at personal risk) communicated to him. The show creates both laughter and tears. The buried treasure of the year is “Echoes of Indiana Avenue,” the in 25 years. Montgomery (1923-1968) died young and his later recordings achieved commercial success but were more easy listening than straight-ahead jazz. The recently discovered recordings capture major label. “Misty” and “Body and Soul” show that he was already an accomplished balladeer. What is more surprising is his facility with the blues. There is an abundance of straight-ahead jazz, with Horace Silver’s Nica’s Dream and Thelonious Monk’s Straight No Chaser and ‘Round Midnight. The sound is clear enough to enjoy the excitement of discovering a star being born.

As Dmitri Hvorostovsky recently demonstrated at the Metropolitan Opera’s performances of “Ernani,” he is one of the world’s leading series of recordings of Russian songs. The latest is “Rachmaninov nostalgia and outright despair and each is a mini-drama. The singer ends “In the silence of the mysterious night” with a beautiful pianissimo. Hvorostovsky will appear at the Met in “La Traviata” on April 6, 10, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28 and May 2.

Anna Moffo (1932- 2006) had all the requirements for operatic stardom. Conductor Eugene Ormandy said that when Moffo auditioned for the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Young Artists Award in 1954, “It is impossible for anyone that beautiful to sing, so I closed my eyes and she won on merit.” Within a few years, she was starring in the world’s leading opera houses. Newton Classics has just released a CD of seven Songs of the Auvergne plus two excerpts from Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras No. Five and Rachmaninoff ’s Vocalise Op. 34 with the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. The recording was made in 1964 when Moffo was still in top form and the music is unfailingly melodic. Joseph Canteloube came from the Auvergne region and his setting of songs from his native province, published 1923-1930, are written in the dialect of the region and the lyrics are bucolic. The most famous of the songs, “Bailero” is sung by a tonal beauty and feeling.

The classic Verve album, “Getz/Gilberto” has been released on a hybrid Super Audio CD and it sounds better than ever. The Gilberto named in the title is singer-guitarist João, though critical to the success of the album was his then-wife Astrud Gilberto, who had never sung on a recording before. While her vocal range may be limited, it’s perfect here, especially on “The Girl the second in English by Astrud. If their voices are thin, Getz’s sound is voluminous. The pianist on the session is Antonio Carlos Jobim and he composed all the songs except Para Machucar Meu “Muddy Waters Folk Singer.” This is simply the great bluesman unplugged in a 1963 session (his only acoustic recording) with the young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass and Clifton James on drums. The compositions are mostly by Waters. The Otis Spann on piano. Dixon’s “The Same Thing” may put you in mind of his “Spoonful.”

By Christopher A. Pape The history of burlesque in New York City is more sordid than its actual reality. And long before strippers twirled on poles in G-strings, adult entertainment pretty much catered to this timeless activity, New York City was the center of the burlesque movement until Mayor Fiorello La Guardia banned it in the 1930’s, calling it entertainment for morons. Yet, times have changed (obviously) and the neo-burlesque movement is back en vogue in New York. Burlesque has made such a resurgent comeback that Christina Aguilera and Cher recently co-starred in the movie, “Burlesque” – helping to reestablish this cherished tradition. The neo-burlesque movement is not a fad and is much more than just vintage dance and an act recreated, but is, in fact, performance art. Some might even venture to say that it is political and social satire; the new punk rock. And one of the people most responsible for this uptick in popularity is Gary Beeber, producer of Gotham Burlesque and The Naked Truth, two shows that are performed at The Triad Theater on West 72nd professional burlesque dancers who are ultra-talented and extremely dedicated. What becomes abundantly clear is that the old burlesque was about the entertainer, being beautiful and maybe doing a routine and some dance steps. But now burlesque is about how talented you are. There’s a lot of parody, it’s very clever and it’s very political. It’s also doesn’t matter what body shape you are. Before, it was about a woman’s beautiful body, but today’s women come in all shapes and size. The best part is that audiences are appreciating and loving it.

comfortably within acceptable and normal entertainment for adults. I would go so far as to say many television shows on primetime are more risqué than what either Gotham or The Naked Truth shows are actualizing.

Next month’s Gotham Burlesque show will be at 10pm on Sat. 4/7 featuring Tigger! as the headliner, and May’s show on Sat. 5/5 at 10pm will feature burlesque superstar Dirty Martini, and April’s The Naked Truth will be on Sat 4/21 at 10pm and May’s on Sat 5/19 at 10pm

Consisting of various performances by women of all shapes, sized and themes – the neo-burlesque is lighthearted while still promoting a message; whatever that particular message might be. Inviting guests to join me, I was enthralled and captivating by this nontraditional form of entertainment and vowed that I would be back. Go for yourself, bring the girls or guys and enjoy. I guarantee you will love it!

The name Julie Chang roles of the tongue as if it were honey; that she is as beautiful in person as she is on TV, doesn’t hurt either. But beyond that, Ms. Chang is a woman of conviction and taste. For she knows not only the hottest and trendiest of places in New York City, but is dedicated to charitable causes with a fervor and passion that not many can match. NY Resident sat down with this stunning beauty to discuss New York City, her work and the causes she cares about most. Read and enjoy – I know you will love it as much as I loved interviewing her. New York Resident (NYR): Thank you for this opportunity. New York Resident is a fan of your work. Can you tell us how it’s like – what is a normal day like? Julie Chang (JC): I think that’s the curse and beauty of my job. No one day is exactly the same. People often ask me, Julie, would you want to be an anchor? Maybe someday, but for now, I love being a reporter because every day is different. For me, I don’t know if I’m going to be at a premiere interviewing Brad Pitt or if I’m going to be live with some local chorus or going to be at Washington Square Park looking for hot men because New York was voted second in the country for hottest men on Traveler’s Digest recent list; so I had the tough assignment to go out there at look for hot men. I cover all the positive stuff – entertainment, lifestyle, etc. Because I get to have fun and the happy angle – it’s great – I get to meet people who are living their dream or the best of their niche. I really feel like I get the pulse of New York. NYR: What do you cover exactly? JC: Everything. Everything that’s pleasurable; except for Fashion Week. I do love fashion, but Fashion Week is not fun to cover. It’s a lot of unnecessary attitude. NYR: We are embarking on interviewing people who are well-known in NY or who have given back to NY in some way. What do you think it means to be a New Yorker? JC: I think to be a New Yorker you really have to love diversity and intensity, because while people work their brains out here, they also socialize and party even harder. New York is an intense and electric city, you’re never going to know, when you’re out at night, who you are going to meet who’s going to be life changing. On another note, I moved nineteen times by the time I was sixteen and I’ve never felt quite at home in any Resident April 2012

So if you can love New you’re not going change its imperfections but you accept those imperfections because the great things are so much of a bigger plus, then you are a New Yorker. NYR: What section of the city do you live in, what do you like about it? JC: I live in Soho. I’ve in the same apartment for eight years. And I love it because I live in a section where there are very few retail stores. It feels very residential and I love that. NYR: JC: This is like asking a mother to name her favorite child. As a food critic, it is easy to spot the restaurants that will be truly successful and ones that have remarkably innovative ideas. Wading through all the dining options can be exhausting and so it is a breath Recently, a friend and I happened upon such a restaurant. CO-OP Food & Drink located in the Rivington Hotel in the Lower East Side is a modern American brasserie and sushi bar serving globally inspired cuisine that is locally sourced and meant to be shared. And from the moment we walked in, with its dim letting, chic lounge and elegant dining room, we knew we were in for a treat. For even if the food had been no good (and trust me it was excellent) we would have been happy enough. So just imagine, how great CO-OP must be, since the food is some of the best I’ve ever had. By combining the quirky and delicious food of Executive Chef John Keller with a Manhattan attitude that indulges the senses and one’s appetite, the team of CO-OP has created a truly unique experience that needs to be savored and must be praised. To enumerate each dish we had - as if giving a play by play – seems almost an injustice, but I suppose it must be attempted. So let us begin. We had the omakase, which means the chef chose for us; he only made the right choices. We started off with the mini ceviche tacos which were served with Aji Amarillo sauce and a mango-avocado but there was something about those tacos that were truly different. The creaminess of the avocado melded harmoniously with the mango and the Aji Amarillo sauce was truly sublime. Moving on we had the black cod butter lettuce with sweet miso and cooked and the miso gave depth and sweetness to the dish; both my friend and I devoured the dish. Next on the menu (no pun intended) was the Lower East Slider. With braised pork belly, short rib, aged beef on a house-made potato roll and sriacha mayo – it was a revelation. In fact, Mr. Keller had told us he has just put this on the menu and I begged, cajoled and pleaded with him to keep it on. It was that good. Mention should also be made of their interior decorating, walls. Created by the photographer EJ Camp they added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the room and also made for a great topic of conversation. But what became ever clearer throughout the meal was that COOP Food & Drink has successfully welded together both food and fashion into a winning combination. And beyond being hip, it is a restaurant whose food is extraordinary and whose concept is winning.

Finding food that I enjoy and that my readers will want to experience can be found in almost any form of restaurant. From high to low; from haute barnyard to new American – my readers demand throw away from the East River, sits Neely’s Barbecue Parlor. Owned by Food Network celebrities Patrick and Gina Neely, the restaurant is an embodiment of their desire to create authentic and delicious Southern cooking and bring it to New York. tones and the multi-level space. And from the moment we walked in, to the moment we left the staff was friendly and extremely helpful. But the best of all was the food. The menu was a string of Southern hits. We started off with pan fried blue crab cakes, hushpuppies with red pepper jelly, candied thick cut slab bacon that were brown sugar coated and slows baked until crispy. Our favorite of the appetizers was the deep fried pickles. Crunchy and sweet they were pockets of goodness and with each bite I felt myself becoming more Southern.

Of the main dishes, we loved the country fried steak. It I hand battered sirloin steak that is deep fried until golden brown and topped with black pepper cream gravy. They served it with mashed potatoes, green beans cooked with bacon and onions. The meat was succulent and tender and we loved the richness and wispiness of the potatoes – they were pure perfection. Mention should also be made of their Kansas City style ‘sweet & sticky’ ribs. They were perfectly cooked; fell right of the bone and topped with the Neely’s famous sweet and tangy barbecue sauce. Their sides deserve their own special category. From Cole Slaw, Brussels sprouts with bacon, whipped sweet potatoes with bourbon-pecan butter to Southern

covered and we certainly enjoyed it all. Neely’s Barbecue Parlor is not a typical Manhattan restaurant, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy. When we were there is was crowded with a mixed crowd of old and young. I truly believe that the Neely’s have a winner and expect the restaurant to leave a lasting impression on the neighborhood. York Grill 1690 York Avenue New York, NY 10128 (212) 772-0261

With Easter just around the corner, it’s important to make reservations to restaurants that will both delight and satisfy. Here in the city there are a multitude of options, but only two that really excite the imagination. Eat and enjoy! York Grill has been serving quality and delicious fare since the restaurant opened on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in September 1995. The restaurant features a warmly lit interior adorned with portraits and a large mural. Executive Chef Stefan Wiles has created a New American Fusion menu designed to please even the most discriminating guests. The restaurant is owned and operated by brothers Tony and Charles Greco, whose veteran career in the hospitality industry began when they opened The restaurant is such a hit with the Upper East Side crowd that they have decided to cater to the needs of the community on Easter. And therefore they will serve a fourcourse Easter dinner on Easter Sunday. Remembering that New Yorkers love varied options, they have opted for some very interesting choices. From a Greek muscat

and star anise poached pear with baby red romaine salad to baby bay scallop and rock shrimp risotto, they’ve got everything covered. Our second choice opened in 1994 as an offshoot of its successful sister in East Hampton. The restaurant, Nick & Toni’s Cafe, is revered for its artisanal food that happens to taste great. From greenmarket Cavolo Nero Crudo with roasted squash, house-cured pancetta, Pecorino Romano and lemon-oil to crispy chicken livers with Satur Farms frisee and balsamic onions – there is something for everyone to enjoy. As with York Grill, they have decided to serve on Easter Sunday. With traditional favorites to more innovative dishes, Nick &Toni’s Café has become the destination of choice for those seeking not to cook on the holiday. With its hand painted frescos which decorate the walls and a wood burning oven that anchors this intimate Upper West Side eatery, it is no wonder why it is so beloved. Whichever restaurant you choose, York Grill or Nick & Toni’s Café we are sure that you won’t be disappointed. Both are local favorites that transcend their roots and

provide dining that punches well above their weight. Perfect for couples, families or Easter Sunday, NY Resident is sure that either one of these two establishments will become your go to spot.

Below are three restaurants that several Resident staff members have eaten at and endorse. From Greek, Latin and romantic dining, we’ve got it covered. And I’m sure that you will agree that all are delicious and worthy of praise. Try for yourself and we know you won’t be disappointed!

The Pan-American With a chic space that encourages courageous, daring cuisine, The PanAmerican is on everyone’s radar. By serving honest, locally-sourced ingredients they have won of a legion of fans. The uniqueness of The Pan American’s concept is evident in

each of the dishes that are presented. But truly it is the combination of sleek, sexy interior with thoughtful, delicious food that makes for a homerun. We loved the tableside guacamole and grilled octopus and squid with Peruvian

potatoes, piquillo, serano ham and ancho vinaigrette. But our favorite was the stuffed jalapeños with spicy berry jam. It was both sweet and hot and exotic in its look and taste. It was a true winner.

1481 York Ave New York, NY 10075 (212) 535-0293

Yefsi Yefsi, a Greek restaurant on the Upper East Side, is brand new to the area and is already causing a stir with its innovative and delicious food. Chef/Owner Christos Christou had found his passion in truly home-

style Greek cuisine. Greek dining is as social his travels throughout the Greek Isles to gain inspiration Chef Christou has brought back classics like zucchini croquettes with Feta and

Kefalograviera cheese with fresh herbs on a bed of caper yogurt sauce to grilled Cypriot cheese with tomatoes, onions and cucumber relish in a citrus vinaigrette.

Water’s Edge With stunning views, sophisticated décor and excellent food Water’s Edge in Long Island City is a shining star of Queens County. With a fresh new menu and a view of Manhattan that will break one’s heart, the restaurant can’t be beat. My words might give you a suggestion of the impact Water’s

Edge will have on you, but you really have to experience it in-person to really know the wonder and excitement that is Water’s Edge. Perfect for a celebration or romantic night, Water’s Edge will satisfy all needs from culinary to atmospheric. We enjoyed many of the dishes here

including: tuna tartar with endive and a lemon-ginger vinaigrette and panko crusted oysters with guacamole and a red pepper reduction. The wine program was just as strong and combined with the view made for a spectacular evening.
