The New Era of Facial Rejuvenation By Dr. Zeena Al-Dujaili
D
ermal filler injections have literally changed the face of aging and have given us the ability to reverse the visible effects of time instantly. In recent years we have developed a better understanding of the aging process. In addition to changes in the skin, significant changes occur in the subcutaneous fat and craniofacial skeleton. This has led to a paradigm shift in our therapeutic approach to facial rejuvenation. Remarkably sophisticated and refined results can now be achieved by using these non-invasive techniques. As a dermatologist with a keen interest in the aesthetics of the aging face I gravitated to the idea of rejuvenating the face by replacing the lost volume. It’s logical that by restoring the lost volume you can create a more youthful appearance. Loss of volume in the cheeks leads to sagging skin and an aged, hollow appearance. Superficial and deep volume loss can also lead to the manifestation of wrinkles, folds, and lines on the surface of the aging face. Fillers aimed at restoring the lost volume both superficially and deep slow the impeding facial aging process. Ten years ago, dermal fillers would be injected to bring a line or wrinkle up to the level of the surrounding skin. However, this ignored other aspects of the complex aging process such as undereye hollows and sunken cheeks, a softer jawline, narrower lips and a flatter bridge on the nose — all caused by shrinking bones, shrinking fat pads and thinning collagen. As we age, our skin laxity increases because we’ve lost the volume over which to drape it. Adding a filler to replace the loss volume creates a more rounded and full appearance, which equates with youthfulness. The new generation of volumizing fillers allow us to recontour the face more efficiently than ever before. Volumizing fillers have been called “liquid facelifts” because they offer a lunchtime solution without the downtime of surgery. For example, judicious use of a thin filler underneath a flattened brow bone will result in a brow lift. And injecting a thicker filler along a sunken cheekbone will not only round out the cheeks but lift up the nose-to-mouth lines too. Volumizing the aging face achieves a more natural youthful appearance. Multiple injectable soft tissue fillers and biostimulators are currently available to provide facial volume such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly-L-lactic acid. The FDA recently approved Voluma, a hyaluronic acid, to temporarily correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area. It is the first and only filler approved to enhance cheek volume. All of these fillers work to reverse the signs of aging, however there are subtle differences between each of them. Five Cars to Survive New York

raffic signals in New York are just rough guidelines,” quipped late night TV host David Letterman. His quote is a perfect starting point for a discussion of what actually constitutes the ideal car for handling New York City. Here we have potholes, people (of whom Russell Baker once said, “New York was the only place you can get deliberately run down on the sidewalk by a pedestrian”), apparently crazed taxi drivers and then the weather – intense heat and humidity in summer, desperate cold, snow and ice in winter. In between these extremes the odd hurricane passes through en route to adjacent Long Island – which the Red Cross places in the top 10 most dangerous hurricane zones in the United States. Just to round out the apocalyptic perspective on driving in New York the City is literally home to Hell’s Kitchen and movies such as Independence Day, Escape from New York, World War Z and I am Legend have firmly identified New York as the logical place to be the beachhead for an alien invasion, maximum security doomsday prison or Zombie apocalypse – it is a lot to consider when standing in a New York car showroom. Whilst there is no automotive equivalent of the everything bagel there are many great marques out there – plus, as a New Yorker – why would you compromise yourself and have only one vehicle at your disposal? For 2014 here are our candidates for the ideal car to meet the wishes of the particular New Yorker. Lets not constrain yourself by price or performance statistics, let alone fuel consumption – New York City is about the vibe, and all of these vehicles deliver their own version in spades.
Aston Martin: If it is good enough for 007? Watching the opening scenes of Daniel Craig’s second 007 outing in Quantum of Solace could leave you in a sweat, triggering memories of the summer drives back and forth along the i-495 and around the Hamptons. “Y
ou want to know what it takes to sell real estate? It takes brass balls…” proclaimed a swaggering Alec Baldwin in the 1992 movie version of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross. That this image of a broker should remain fixed in collective consciousness is in no small part thanks to cosmopolitan buccaneers who have steadfastly dressed a mogul’s worth of riches in ragtag mannerisms while having pimped raggedy properties till they smacked of gold. With TV shows like Million Dollar Listing, building on the ideal that success comes to those whose “weight” is calculated in dollars and nonsense, it becomes hard to imagine real estate business without a dose of ruthlessness, flamboyance and well-coiffed ‘always-be-closing’ madness. Entering this often-calculated arena comes one Tristan Harper, a man whose genteel European air and transparency belie his professional acumen and savvy instincts. With finely chiseled features and deep-set eyes forever combing the space around him, Tristan sits waiting for me in a chic Midtown French restaurant as though an urban planning committee placed him there. His
demeanor has architectural integrity: restrained gestures, elongated posture, forthright greeting and a friendly handshake – each element attesting to a man who is in perfect harmony with his elegant surroundings. Tristan is in possession of a charming European accent in which he responds to my question of how his being European impacts his work: “Europe is in my genes, as is real estate.” This answer comes as no surprise from someone having been born, raised, educated and worked in such places as former Yugoslavia, France, Switzerland and England before obtaining a Canadian citizenship ahead of moving to New York City. His ancestors were landowners since the “old Venetian times,” when his family was bestowed an aristocratic title. Tristan explains: “Despite taking a different path in my studies, which earned me advanced degrees in business administrations for the arts, and my earlier careers in theater production, diplomacy and international business, when I eventually settled in New York, my family legacy impelled me to reconsider.” Resident April 2014 • 29

When asked about how he got started in the world of New York City’s real estate, Tristan gives way to a self-effacing smile. “Let’s put it this way,” Tristan admits, “certain clichés are profoundly true and when you come from the outside, it’s not what you know but whom you know. In my case whom I knew were the contacts I still had overseas – some of whom, luckily, were looking to buy properties in New York. To this day they constitute a good part of my business.”

The business, Tristan explains, is as much about understanding the client as it is about finding the right “matches.” “There is a lot of hand-holding involved. For instance -foreigners don’t always know much about the city; they have some vague idea as to locations, but you have to be in for the full run. Choices abound, as do the limitations. Much to consider and more to reconsider.” The job gets no easier with local buyers: “the wife wants one thing, the husband another, the parents the third… It is, truly, a question of finding the right balance,” says Harper. “It may sound cheesy, but it is pretty satisfying when people come to recognize, by themselves, what they actually want in real estate, and when you see that sparkle in their eyes that says: yes, this is it.”

Tristan concedes that there are occasional frustrating moments: “People don’t always listen in time. I can say, ‘this is a great deal, it works for your needs, you clearly love it, so jump on it’. But, often they waffle, a form of hesitation sets in and by the time they eventually say ‘yes,’ the property is gone. Apartments in New York move fast. It is just the way it is. This city seems to have limitless cash rolling in, but the inventory is extremely limited.” A poet once wrote, “When we pass we pass, so if we meet we meet.” The idea of doing your best and then leaving things to fate is an ideal Mr. Harper abides by. “Many in this

Even my self-interest demands that I do only what I believe serves my client’s interest.” In a way, Tristan Harper’s is the glorified, 21st century version of an early 20th century success story – the one where the immigrant lands on Ellis Island and retains his identity and beats all odds in a single act that alters not only his own destiny but that of his new home. Tristan’s highly publicized moment came just weeks after the 9/11 tragedy, as the city’s real estate hit a downward spiral that promised to be a standstill. It was then that Tristan Harper brokered the sale of an unfinished duplex on Park Avenue for over $18 Million. It was the highest-priced transaction of the year. “I felt humbled, not merely for the sale, but for the vindicating fact that there was someone out there who believed what I tried to communicate – there is only one New York, the eternal New York.” When asked what he sees and the best type of property or area in the city for investing, Tristan exclaims: “Manhattan properties are often considered like ‘cash in the bank’ no matter where they are. People have and will always be coming to this island for one reason or the other. And, because it is an island, it is finite. Every property in New York is – given time – a good one.” Tristan continues: “At the beginning of my real estate career, in the late 90’s, there was an apartment my purchaser was interested in – on Park Avenue in the 90s. A few of my oldtimer colleagues told me: ‘who the hell would live there?’ Well, less than 15 years later, who the hell wouldn’t?” Today, further uptown, Harlem, both East and West, is slowly becoming one of the hottest new investment areas in the city,” concludes Tristan Harper, Manhattan’s broker extraordinaire. Recently, I came across a quote that said, “when we first see a city about which we had earlier read, we don’t really see it. Instead, we see only what we had always imagined it to be. Then slowly, sorrow sets in and we feel it is less spacious than our imagination. Finally, we relinquish this sorrow and are able to see the city for all its beauty in a way those born there could not.” As Tristan walked away from our lunch meeting, I understood that the New York he sees daily is one that many of us are still in the process of building; one whose structures and spaces are made of more than concrete, one whose perspective demand several states of mind. And, back to Glengarry Glen Ross, its character Ricky Roma seemed to be right about the true value of real estate when he said: “I have these properties I would like for you to see... What does it mean? What do you want it to mean?”

I
t came as no surprise that, back in the 1960s, the notorious publisher Bob Guccione named his new urban-lifestyle men’s magazine Penthouse, and immediately started using the trademark phrase “Life on Top” to associate with the publication. He simply applied to his glossy journal the common perception of the highest level of luxury living “on top” of the high-rise apartment buildings. Like the residential penthouses, Guccione’s magazine aimed (and succeeded) to be differentiated from others by its many luxury features. However, in architectural vocabulary, the term ‘penthouse’ originally had a much humbler beginnings. It referred to a separate, smaller “house” that was constructed on the roof of an apartment building. Such “small houses” were often used as the unit owners housekeeping staff ’s modest quarters, or as a storage areas for the building’s maintenance supplies. Then, in “the Roaring Twenties,” the economic growth led to a construction boom in New York City, and the idea of a luxury penthouse apartment was born. The high demand by the new wealth led to the creation of lavish terraced apartments on top floor (or floors) of many posh buildings.

REAL ESTATE To this date, the large, often “wrap-around” terraces continue to adorn penthouse apartments. Therefore, such outdoor expanses remain to be the main “wow effect” of penthouse homes. Such terraces are often lushly planted and furnished as extensions of the apartment’s living spaces. They offer room for al-fresco dining, sunbathing, working out, swimming, even golfing (in small putting green areas)… Because the penthouses are, by definition, located on the highest floor(s) of apartment buildings, they typically come with spectacular views of the city skyline, landmark buildings, parks and rivers. In Manhattan real estate terminology, the “million dollar view” from a terraced penthouse has long become, literary, a “MULTI million dollar view.” This is how much the views may add to the value of a home. And, this may well be yet another reason why Mr. Guccione picked a word ‘Penthouse’ as the name for his “picture-rich” magazine.

TriBeCa By Linette Semino
“T
riBeCa is one of the most sought-after and expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan. The name is an acronym for the Triangle Below Canal, bounded on the north by Canal Street, on the south by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River and on the east by Church Street. Throughout the years, TriBeCa’s borders have unofficially extended to the Hudson River to the west, Broadway to the East, and Financial District to the south. Its Western location offers a level of privacy and exclusivity rarely found in bustling Downtown neighborhoods like SoHo or The Meatpacking District. Privacy is not the only factor attracting New York’s most affluent to TriBeCa. New York Magazine describes TriBeCa as follows; “By many criteria, TriBeCa could be considered the best place to live in the city. It enjoys minuscule crime levels, great schools, tons of transit, well-planned waterfront access, and light-filled loft-type apartments in painstakingly rehabbed industrial buildings.” Since the 1970’s, TriBeCa has become a popular home for New Yorkers. The Juilliard Building at 18 Leonard Street: Originally built in 1874 for a member of the prominent Augustus D. Juilliard Dry-Goods firm. ollow these easy steps to make that apartment yours – before you even start really living in it!
PROPER PRIOR PLANNING Before moving into the apartment, carefully map out the floor plan. In this project, it was evident that the old sofa wasn’t going to fit without overwhelming the space. A new, sleeker & smaller sofa was selected prior to the move, and the old one sold on Craig’s List. Lead-time for sofas is typically 8-14 weeks. If your lease starts in 2 months+, start shopping now. Otherwise, buy a sofa “in stock,” but be willing to compromise. The stocked color might be a shade off from the fabric you really want, deal with it... the longer you search to find “the perfect sofa,” the longer it will take to arrive. When move in day comes (which we all dread), you will be happy you planned in advance. THE ART OF CAMOUFLAGE There is going to be something about the apartment that isn’t great, but hey, “it’s in the best neighborhood!”... “and who actually spends time at home anyways?” Well, at some point you will go home, and there will be something that annoys you every time you see it. In this case, it could have been the TV. There was only one place for it to go, so we had to devise a diversion: a dark wall. The dark grey paint helped the black TV blend in without making it a focal point in the room. If you know something is going to drive you crazy about the apartment, camo it immediately. We live in a city where we are constantly bothered, why let it happen in your own home?

HOME SIMPLICITY Every wall and every corner of your space does not have to be “decorated.” Less is usually more. Artwork was placed thoughtfully: one gallery wall, layered art on lucite shelves, and individual pieces placed atop the bookshelf and mantle. The art is allowed to shine since it isn’t scattered on every wall. Furthermore, plain white sheets and duvet with 2 sleeping pillows and 1 decorative pillows adorns the bed. Have we learned nothing from Ben Stiller & Jennifer Aniston in Along Came Polly? Reduce your decorative pillows and you can save up to 2 days per year. LET THERE BE LIGHT (OR NOT) We like our lighting to change. Working on a creative project: bright light. After dinner drinks: not so bright light. Ask your landlord to install a dimmer. For maximum impact, install a ceiling light fixture. Everyone will notice it, whether it’s bright or dim, and who doesn’t enjoy getting compliments from friends on the rare occasion they actually come over? COORDINATION Think about the materials in the space and how they can relate to each other. For example, the floor lamp and the ceiling chandelier are different metals, but both have exposed edison style bulbs. The bed frame, side and coffee table are all dark wood. The colors on the gallery wall and the artwork is also in throw pillows, books, and accessories. BE YOU Display your collections, travels and inspiration. It’s your home and a reflection of you and your aspired self. Be proud of your apartment from the first day you move in. You wouldn’t show up to work looking like a mess, so don’t let your home do it to you!

Disney’s Golden Oak Resort Makes Living with Mickey More Than a Possibility – It’s a Smart Investment.

any see Disney as a once in lifetime vacation. Others see Mickey as a member of the family and Disney as an extension of their residence.
would almost miss it, if not looking. When ownership is official, new owners are given a Mickey map of their property so they can find their hidden Mickey’s.
Disney has long listened to the wants of their customers and continues to cater to their needs. Their more affluent audience has expressed a continued interest in setting up real roots in The Magic Kingdom, by living in Disney. Real Estate is not new to Disney as it has toyed with it in the past. Yet, it just recently made realty, a reality.
Owners choose one of the seven locally approved Disney builders to design their home. They are done in a number of architectural styles including; Tuscan, Spanish Revival, Venetian, Italianate, Dutch Colonial, Island Colonial and French Country. Irreverent owners need to apply as true to the Disney brand, one can’t venture too far off the grid.
In 2013 several residents moved in to The Golden Oak, a Walt Disney World Resort. The difference between this exclusive resort and other Disney properties is that those staying at The Golden Oak, own it.
Each owner is given a list of restrictions they must adhere to, so there is consistency in the quality on all from gutters to shutters. On top of aesthetic restrictions, homeowners also have to pay additional fees, including property taxes and annual fees as high as $12,000 to cover benefits.
The Golden Oak is named after Walt’s Studio in California where many classic TV shows were shot, including Mash and The Mickey Mouse Club. The ranch was initially named after an oak tree on property where gold was believed to be found, in the height of California’s gold rush. Nods to Walt and to all things Disney are ever-present throughout the individual properties and within the gated community.

Regardless of where they are from or what they do, they are one of the few that can say they live at Disney. To them it’s a small world after all.

I came to see the dazzling 12th–century temples. What I found was a beautiful country with vibrant, friendly optimistic locals determined to forge forward, healing from their turbulent past – and the inspiring people who champion them.

Seeing the lost city of Angkor, twice the size of Manhattan with over 100 temples was staggering. The most famous temple, Angkor Wat, is literally heaven on earth. This masterpiece of ancient Khmer architecture represents Mt Meru, the Mt Olympus of the Hindu faith and the abode of the gods, with more than 3000 apsaras (supernatural nymphs) devatas (deities) and extensive basreliefs carved into its walls and the magnificent Hall of the Thousand Buddhas. Seven hundred feet high, covering hundreds of acres and surrounded by a giant moat, it is a sight to behold. Watching the sunrise on the western gate as the central tower came into view was mystical. In the afternoon I visited Angkor Thom with its wondrous Bayon Temple with 37 towers and countless sculptural adornments, which received cinematic fame as a setting in Angelina Jolie’s “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.” Next, a water blessing from a monk in the countryside, followed by a private sunset boat ride on an ancient waterway with gin and tonic in hand.
It’s not surprising that Siem Reap is on everyone’s hot list of places to go in 2014. As the gateway to the famed Angkor Wat, with old French shophouses, tree lined streets, a river and a wave of chic restaurants, cafes and bars, it has become a coveted destination in itself. Stroll the charming town teaming with art galleries, boutiques, open-air markets and shops selling all varieties of local wares. Snag Khmer silk lovelies at Artisans d’Angkor, handmade by local villagers. Dreamy photographs of Angkor Wat at Mc Dermott Gallery make great souvenirs. Visit the fashionable shops and galleries in the stylish FCC complex, then have a drink on their terrace overlooking the river. Try the tasty local cuisine, like delectable fish amok in coconut curry at Sugar Palm Restaurant, in a lovely wooden Khmer House. ‘Made in Hong Kong’ Redefined N

o, this was not that Hong Kong – not the one ‘made in Hong Kong’ and stuck ignominiously on the back of a trinket; not the one dreamt of by a child who watched Enter the Dragon and mistakenly believed he could intimidate the school bully by pretending to be Bruce Lee. This was another Hong Kong – the one made partially comprehensible by Wong Karwai, the one extolled for haut cuisine, the one I was not fated to see until a recent excursion landed me in the lobby of the renowned Mandarin Oriental. I write ‘renowned’ because the Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental is not just one in the line of five star luxury hotels but the paradigm on which the iconic MO brand had been built.

With walnut paneling, lavish drapes and king sized beds boasting duck feather pillows, the rooms – along with their travertine stone and black forest Chinese marble bathrooms (each with both bath and walk-in shower) - are a haven from the outside world as much as they are a place from which to view change. Putting on my complimentary silk kimono, I looked out over the bustling city – a manageable series of neatly placed skyscrapers discretely elbowing their way between the sea and the mountainous terrain looming in the distance.
Its dominant theme: a white lily floral on the central banquette that echoes the outer world like an idealized version of the same. Overseen by Chef Uwe Opocensky, the Michelin star establishment put the finest organic ingredients and seasonal produce in the service of reinterpreted grill classics. With Welsh Mallard Duck and fresh Sea Bass, the restaurant is a well-orchestrated culinary rhapsody while its menu reads like a libretto in molecular gastronomy. Of course, when it came to true culinary wizardry, little compares with the two Michelin starred Pierre, situated on the 25th floor. Here Pierre Gagnaire elicits the best in French cuisine within a seductively regal environment. Like the charcoal, cherry and blue fabrics playing off the silver and crystal motifs, the dishes evoke both drama and simplicity in equal measure. From the Oscietra caviar quenelle to the Corolla of scallops with cuttlefish and sea urchin, there is a growing sense of excitement throughout the courses. By the time of the doe with juniper berries arrive
TRAVEL for the crescendo, one can easily understand that Hong Kong has always been an arena for competing civilizations. Still, the different possibilities in dining hardly end here. Man Wah, a Michelin starred Cantonese restaurant headed by Chef Man-Sing Lee, educates patrons on regional specialties. With cinematic flair, truly succulent dim sum is juxtaposed with a tantalizing backdrop of original silk paintings and birdcages for ceiling lamps. The result: a restaurant that is clearly as much for the eyes as it is for the palate.

alta is a rather atypical Mediterranean island located South of Sicily in a small archipelago of 3 islands, with a very, very ancient history.

For everyday living, the Maltese people are fully engaged in the 21st century; culturally, they are in the 19th to early 20th century British Empire; architecturally it’s a mixed bag! The preponderance of structural forms date to the 17th and 18th century, with many going back to the architecture of the Order of the Knights of St. John Hospitallers, the Renaissance, and even further, to the Moors of Southern Spain and North Africa.
Mdina (from the Arabic al-madīnah meaning the old town) is the old capital of Malta. Built defensively at the high point of a hill, it has a blend of medieval and baroque buildings in a maze of winding, narrow streets constructed from the honey-colored limestone that most buildings are built in Malta. The city is surrounded by bastions with crenellated parapets and is located at the cultural heart of the island. From behind the parapets, one can see the modern section of the city of Valletta (current capital), and the entrance to the Grand Harbor, which is protected by an artillery row below the parapet.
Even the language is curious. Alongside the Queen’s English, Maltese is spoken as a co-official language. This language has Roman/Arabic roots and it was a variety spoken on Sicily, between the beginning of the tenth century and the end of the twelfth. The modern Maltese cultural mosaic is extremely rich for having integrated the diverse influences from cultures such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Goths, Arabs and Castilians, to the Knights of St John, the French, and finally the British. All have left their mark with monuments and monumental edifices; works of art and religious beliefs; language; agriculture and cuisine.

But this is only a very small part of Maltese history.
As guests of the Malta Tourism Authority and the Corinthia Palace Hotel and Spa, we arrived to Malta’s airport on a Lufthansa flight and were driven like royalty to the hotel in a classic Rolls Royce Silver Wraith circa 1951. The Corinthia Palace Hotel is located across the street from the Presidential Palace that features the famous San Anton Gardens, which are open to the public.
6,500 years ago, a Neolithic civilization flourished here leaving behind megalithic structures considered by researchers as temples dedicated to the Goddess of Fertility. Curiously, they are vastly dissimilar to the structures built in Sicily within the same time period, even though historians consider the early Maltese as Sicilians that migrated to Malta over 7,000 years ago. They are also very dissimilar to the Neolithic Nuraghi structures
. Also not to be missed is the mysterious “temple” site of Hagar Qim that was built on the crest of a ridge overlooking the sea on the island of Malta. It is situated in a defensive position, more suitable for a settlement than solely for a temple. So why would a relatively small population expend so much effort to build such an extensive temple complex? The mystery deepens because not more then 500 meters down the hill to the west is another “temple complex” called Mnajdra. Excavated decorative clay vessels with intricate designs, flint tools, and a representation of a human head fashioned in clay have been unearthed at this site, but so far there is no evidence of habitation leading to the supposition that both were ceremonial sites. These above-earth structures pale when compared to the underground world of a subterranean structure dating to 3000-2500 BC. The

built on nearby Sardinia. Located on Gozo, the second island in the archipelago, you will . find Ggantija – a local fable alleges a female giant built it – dating from 3,800 BC. It is the oldest megalithic temple site so far discovered and well worth visiting via a short boat trip, which in the calm deep blue waters surrounding Malta is a must-do. You can hire a sailboat or take the ferry; either way not to be missed.
Villa Corinthia at Corinthia Palace Hotel and Spa
Hal Saflieni Hypogeum of Paola is a prehistoric necropolis and the remains of more than 7,000 individuals have been found deposited there. It is the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world. Bones have been unearthed as well as votive figurines of the Fertility Goddess, but the evidence is that the bones were unceremoniously heaped there, after tissue decomposition was complete, compounding the mystery. It was closed to visitors between 1992 and 1996 for restoration; since it reopened, only 80 people per day (10 individuals per hour) are allowed entry to protect the subterranean structure from the humidity exuded by the visitor’s breath. Malta provides a wealth of rare and outstanding sightseeing opportunities from the aforementioned Mdina, to the Neolithic temples, to the residences and hospital of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (also known as the Order of the Knights of Malta, one of the few Orders created in the Middle Ages that are still active today). Outstanding is the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a high Baroque church used by the Knights of Malta, replete with intricately carved gilded designs, frescoed vaulted ceilings and side chapels with scenes from the life of St. John. Since the Knights were members of Europe’s leading aristocratic families, each family had to commit a third of their annual income to the Order; and all of the Knight’s property to the church upon his death. It has eight chapels, each belonging to one of the eight national groups, which made up the Order. The Cathedral houses Europe’s most exquisite collection of Caravaggio’s paintings, the most important being the “Beheading of John the Baptist”. The Knights of Malta were warriors and medical monks, originally formed to care for

In 1530, Emperor Charles V, King of Spain, granted the Maltese Islands to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in perpetual fief, in exchange for an annual tribute, to indicate the acceptance of the suzerainty of the Holy Roman Emperor. Contrary to Sydney Greenstreet’s assertions in the 1941 Warner Bros. film “The Maltese Falcon” that the falcon was a jewel encrusted gold bird, the Grand Master of the Order had to actually pay on All Saints day an annual tribute to the Holy Roman Emperor and his mother Queen Joanna of Castile, one live falcon. The order and grand master paid the annual falcon until 1798 when the French Republic expelled the Order from the Maltese islands. L
ooking at Larissa Savveleiev glued to her cell phone while sipping fresh juice at Fabio Cucina Italiana in midtown, you would not guess that she has revolutionized the way dance schools and companies all over the world discover young talent. Fifteen years ago, two immigrants from Russia, former dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet, Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev found themselves in New York. They had escaped the seemingly glamorous world of the Bolshoi Ballet because, as Larissa explains, “things were really stagnant at that time – both in the country and at the Bolshoi Theater. We wanted to dance, we wanted to grow and develop, and we wanted to

create a future for ourselves and for our child.” Gennadi got a job dancing with the American Ballet Theatre, and Larissa started teaching. “I found it exciting to help young dancers grow into serious artists and I wanted to grow as a teacher. So I started looking for a place where I could compare my students to others and learn from other teachers – but I didn’t find one! So I decided to create my own.” This was the birth of Youth America Grand Prix. Remembering the ballet competitions of their youth – where schools, teachers and students from all over the Soviet Union gathered annually to showcase young
talent, the Savelievs decided to start a ballet competition in America. But, after talking to teachers and school directors, Larissa realized the concept of a student ballet competition was completely new to this country. “Our biggest challenge was to change the American attitude towards competitions, to break through the wall of prejudice against competitions among serious ballet schools,” Larissa recalls. “In 1999, there were only jazz competitions – and, for serious ballet dancers, it was the antithesis of artistry or the serious study of ballet. “ Larissa explained how she managed to change the negative attitude towards ballet competitions in the US. “We promised as
CULTURE many talented students as we could find that they will be seen by the top dance professionals in the world; we promised directors of the top ballet schools that they will see some of the most talented students in the U.S. – and they believed us. Then we delivered both.” In the first year, YAGP held semi-finals in three cities in the U.S. and managed to convince 8 American schools to present scholarships at the Finals in New York. Fifteen years later, it boasts a jury panel representing 30 of the world’s leading dance academies, including Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Ballet School, Canada’s National Ballet School, La Scala Ballet Academy, and Stuttgart Ballet’s John Cranko School. They annually award over $300,000 in scholarships to their schools – and, aided by these scholarships, more than 300 of YAGP alumni now dance with 80 companies around the world. Larissa pauses as she considers what it took to make such an incredible journey. “A lot of work and an amazing team of people
who believed in YAGP from the start including our great Board. And – just the fact that this was the right idea at the right time. The world was ready for this. ” As YAGP grew the Savelievs recognized that it is not enough to prepare just the future dancers; it is also important to educate future dance audiences. With that in mind, they have created their annual Gala in New York City – “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow ” – featuring international ballet stars alongside the finalists of the competition. This year’s Gala at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on April 10th will bring to NYC the hottest star of the Bolshoi Ballet, Olga Smirnova, international ballet diva Lucia Lacarra, American Ballet Theatre’s Misty Copeland and YAGP Alumana Skylar Brandt as well as stars of the Paris Opera Ballet, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Canada’s National Ballet, internationally renowned ballroom dancers – and the exciting young dance talent the Saveliev’s have handpicked from
30 countries around the world. There will be a second program on April 11th. Larissa concudes “All this is great, last year we had Woody Allen, Donald Trump, and David Koch himself come to the Gala! But the real reason we continue to do what we do are the kids. It is the boy from the Brazilian favelas who is now dancing with Stuttgart Ballet, it is the boy from Columbia who is now a member of English National Ballet, it is the Japanese girl who last year joined the American Ballet Theatre. All these kids might never have had the chance to be seen and discovered for the true talents that they are. But, thanks to YAGP, they were. Zengo As Top Chef Richard Sandoval scours the globe searching for to pair tastes and cultures from Latin America and Asia, his latest test kitchen combination is Japan to Mexico which is one of his most scrumptious collaborations to date. Though both countries are just an ocean apart, Chef Sandoval seamlessly weaves flavors and techniques from the street foods of these vastly different cuisines. New to the menu are the Achiote Shrimp Tempura Roll with crunchy achiote jicama and chile toreado aioli, and an Octopus aguachile toradito in a ginger green chili broth with soy, Asian pair, avocado and Nori. Meat dishes include teriyaki pork belly sliders with Oaxaca cheese, guacamole, and caramelized pineapple, and a kabayaki glazed lamb shank barbacoa enhanced with ginger, chilies, tamarind, and pickled vegetables. With the hints of spice, nothing pairs better with the spicy and robust flavors than the test kitchen cocktails. Wash it down with a shiro margarita or a calamansi Old fashioned with Japanese whiskey, calamansi juice and bitters. Don’t wait too long as the Test Kitchen menu changes every few months.

Triomphe Tucked away inside the historic Iroquois Hotel in Midtown is Triomphe, a modern French formal restaurant with a menu created by Swiss native, Executive chef Florian Wehrli. True to the French cuisine many of his signature dishes are infused with champagne or fine wines in inventive and elegant ways. The fresh East coast oysters are adorned with champagne pearls as its mignonette, as well as the seared foie gras and duck confit napoleon that is drizzled with a port reduction sauce. To whet the palette try the velvety harlequin cauliflower soup accented with black truffle. Chef Florian displays his ambitious talents with his main courses that take French haute cuisine to a new level. Crema de bleu stuffed beef tenderloin is paired with an onion marmalade, monk fish osso bucco has a pinot noir sauce, and Maine lobster is poached in butter sauce making for a rich finish. While everything is sourced locally, the menu changes seasonally to reflect the farm to table experience and surprise our palette with new flavors.
Park Kitchen As one of Midtown West’s favorite hotels, the Park Central Hotel recently underwent an extensive multi million dollar renovation and has been reimagined by award winning designer Jeffrey Beers who created a new look inspired by the iconic landmarks around the neighborhood. At the heart of the lobby is the signature restaurant, Park Kitchen, headed by Executive Chef Nathaniel Eckhaus who has previously worked at Eleven Madison Park and South Gate restaurant bringing his flair for using local provisions to create contemporary American dishes. Comfort food has been tweaked with gourmand touches with small plates such as PB&J- braised pork belly & pepper jam sandwiches, fried chicken with pickled egg and house made sweet hot sauce, and Brooklyn lager battered fish & chips. Indulgent sweets include a rich chocolatey Mississippi mud pie and New York cheese cake. As the ‘NYCentric’ themed menu pays homage to its hometown- the drink menu also reflects the same kind of inspiration with locally sourced craft liquors. The Staten Island Frappe features Bacard, Oakheart rum, pineapple juice and sasparilla bitters, and the Manahatta features NY state corn whisky, Martini bianco, peach bitters and sweet pickled baby corn all created by NY Native mixologist, Nick Mautone. Comodo What started as a weekly supper party two years ago has blossomed into Comodo. Translating to comfort, Chef Felipe Donnelly cooked and his wife Tamy Rofe played hostess and blogged about their weekly dinner parties where they invited complete strangers to their apartment until they were shut down by the health department. With Columbian roots, Donnelly is heavily inspired by the comfort cuisine of his native country with influences of his experiences in Spain, Brazil & Mexico. A true testament to their love of food, Comodo evokes an inviting yet romantic vibe with exposed brick walls, conversation over shared dishes lit by soft ambient lighting in West Soho. The improvisational feel of the dishes infuses every dish with fresh flavors and textures like the mezcal cooked octopus over apple cider braised kale, a fresh daily ceviche in lime celery juice and corn nuts, chipotle rubbed cod, Columbian ajiaco soup with 3 different potatoes, guascas, chicken, avocado, corn and capers, and Brazilian braised leg of lamb stewed with coconut milk and tomatoes. Dessert is simple yet rich with the coconut cake aptly named 7 pounds, classic churros & cocoa, and the Brigadeiro chocolate cake with saffron sauce. Not to be missed is their Sakerinha which is a Japanese influenced caipirinha made with sake and their house made sangria which comes from a secret recipe and is amongst the best in the city.

Ken & Cook While Nolita hotspot Ken & Cook has been known for their trendy scene, the menu got a revamp thanks to newly appointed Chef Hido Holli who changed the offerings from American comfort food to a Provencal Mediterranean menu. While their famous seafood raw bar tower remains along with their imported charcuterie and cheese plates, main courses tend to be more seafood centric with an Alsatian flair. Chef Hido excels in classic French bistro fare like a seafood bouillabaisse is chock full of shellfish and branzino in a rich seafood tomato broth, whole branzino with herbes de provence, olives and pequillo peppers, salmon avocado tartare as well as meat classics like, braised lamb shank, cote de boeuf, and aged strip steak and frites. Artichoke While NYC has its fair share of pizza joints, Artichoke Pizza stands out from the crowd. Self declared Pizzaiolos, cousins Francis Garcia and Sal Basille grew up in the pizza making business at their family’s restaurant Basille’s in Staten Island. Since 2008, they have expanded their operations to 4 locations throughout NYC. Dedicated loyalists swear by the filling artichoke pizza which uses artichoke hearts, spinach, cream sauce, mozzarella and pecorino cheese or the stuffed artichoke brimming with garlicky goodness. Other favorites are the vodka Sicilian dripping with a rich tomato vodka sauce and mix of Italian cheeses, and the classic margherita pizza with a robust marinara sauce, cheesy top, and thick crust. NGAM A native from Thailand, Chef Hong Thaimee was first an international fashion model and TV personality before she decided to pursue her love of Thai cuisine. Bringing a modern approach to Thai comfort food she uses traditional Thai flavors with local ingredients and even teaches cooking classes so you can take the flavor of Thailand home. Bleecker Kitchen Comfort food comes to Noho with Bleecker Kitchen & Co. Soho shoppers and NYU students will delight in the regional East Coast American fare spanning from the South to the Northeast that our palettes adore. Vetro Though super storm Sandy did a number on Howard Beach establishments, Vetro’s Restaurant and Lounge is back and better than ever. Situated on the harbor of Howard Beach, this expansive multi level fine Italian restaurant is the sister restaurant to the famous Russo’s on the Bay and is decorated in an ornate Mediterranean style with breathtaking sunset views from its rooftop lounge. Chef Michael DeGeorgio creates classic fine Italian dishes, making it one of the best Italian restaurants outside of Manhattan. Exquisite renditions of old school favorites include clams oreganata, fresh lobster ravioli, shrimp stuffed with crab in a béchamel sauce, pork osso buco that falls off the bone, and veal scallopini with a marasala demi glace. The dishes are only enhanced by wines from their extensive collection that includes rare bottles and limited distribution vineyards. To keep the party going, the heated rooftop lounge features DJs and dancing from Thursdays to Saturdays from 8pm til the wee hours of the night.

Reinventing French I
’ve always loved French food, but I sometimes get the feeling that while the cuisines of other cultures have evolved and adapted to our changing world, most French restaurants are still running along the lines of Disney’s Ratatouille. The Elm in Brooklyn changes all that. A collaboration between the famed Paul Liebrant-you may have seen A Matter of Taste: Serving up Paul Liebrandt on HBO-and Mazen Mustafa-recently at Momofuku Ko, The Elm offers a new take on French and European cuisine. Instead of a traditional cassoulet, for example, The Elm has a version made with lobster, filled with fresh ingredients and delicate flavors. And underpinning the whole experience are a range of Asian influences, subtly blended into dishes prepared to the highest standards of classically trained chefs. My companion and I began with the steak tartare, one of my favorite dishes and something more people should be willing to try. At its worst, steak tartare can be bland and heavy. Here at The Elm it is as it should be: light and delicately spiced. I particularly liked the addition of olives, while the

cornichons delivered a pleasing crunchiness that contrasted nicely with the texture of steak. We sampled three more dishes from the main dinner menu. The “Fish and
Chips” deserved the quotes they give it on the menu. This was not your ordinary fish and chips. Instead, it comes accompanied by crisp vegetable fries and a tangy Indian lime pickle that manages not to overwhelm the dish. Next, the cauliflower for two made me forget how much I used to hate the vegetable as a kid. We then shared the pork belly, one of the three dishes on the menu intended for two people. I loved the way

that the chef used cabbage and apple, giving the dish a lightness and freshness that left us eager to order a second helping. Tempting though this was, I am glad we restrained ourselves. The dessert menu is eclectic but enticing. I went for the roasted white chocolate, and my friend raved about the buttermilk pannacota. Overall, this was a great meal, the sort of original food that you can talk about for weeks afterwards. In fact, it was so good, I almost forgot to mention the great modern interior-every inch Williamsburg chic-and the attentive and efficient service. Yes, it’s not exactly cheap and not the sort of place to go to carbo-load before the marathon. But the Elm is a gem that is worth every penny, and a dining experience you won’t easily forget.

A French Opera in 4 Acts L
incoln Center may have lost the New York City Opera by late 2013, but luckily, it managed to keep the prestigious FrancoMediterranean repertory, Picholine. With six consecutive shows a week, Picholine is the longest running opera in the area – one composed and orchestrated by the grand maestro, Chef Terrance Brennan. Like the best French works, Picholine mixes frivolity and drama in equal measure while sporting a repertoire that lends itself to cheese without ever being cheesy. The overture: service is a go, suggestions are made, aromas dash to and fro; a cheese cellar is discerned from a distance as a cart angles towards an audience member in close proximity. But no time for that now; our curtain is rising. The first aria strikes one’s eyes as much as it does one’s palate: a lyrical smoked sturgeon panna cota mounts the alabaster stage accompanied by a flirtatious beet carpaccio and the wild American Caviar on a rye crisp. Soon, a blue hubbard squash bisque with chestnuts, pear butter and quatre épice Meringue appears. We let the warm glow wash over us. Without warning the dark tone of a Black Truffle is discernible among the chorus of wild mushroom risotto and butternut squash.

discerned upon entering the theater. Rapture. Fromager Verna Valencia sure knows how to handpick cheeses. Majorero Pimenton, Pena Blanca, Monte Enebro – divas all… the Sopranos and heroic tenors of the Cheese world celebrated on a single stage.
Act 2 opens with a Grilled Escolar a la Basquaise with sumptuous squid ink cavatelli and a spicy little number of Paella Broth. My partner, who is not in the mood for the Carmen-like fervor of this piquant dish, opts for a less dramatic but equally renowned piece, the Maine Diver Scallop. Like Nadir’s aria from the Pearl Fisher, there is a delicacy that touches one to the core. With Pumpkin, trumpet royale and vanilla-cranberry vinaigrette, the dish remains a timeless classic. Though this opera is usually performed in 3 acts, 5 acts or 8 acts, our crowd of two opted for something in between and so we ordered the Thomas Farm Squab – a lush pastoral of Pot en Feu, root vegetables and Spiced Foie Gras. The end of Act 3 saw the reappearance of the Cheese Cart, the very same symbol we had first
The epilogue: Moments before breaking into applause, we were treated to a chorus of Caramel Mousse, Apple variations, and Gunawan Cinnamon Ice Cream. I couldn’t stop my partner in time, as she bellowed Encore moments before a Guanaja Choclate Marquise with Fennel.-Yuzu sorbet, Nicoise olives and Blood Orange came barreling out. This is one performance where it can be lifethreatening to keep shouting ‘encore.’ After a few well-spaced bravissimos, we got up, thanked our host and departed confident in the notion that the unaffected little Picholine may just be New York’s culinary answer to Palais Garnier.

he literal translation of Tarallucci e vino is savory biscuits and wine, but as Italians love to associate proverbial meanings with food – it refers to resolving a dispute by pretending there was no dispute to begin with- or the more familiar American expressionwe agree to disagree so let’s break the bread over some wine. ll due respect professor, but if you’re telling me it’s impossible to explain a layman the area of physics you’re specialized in then you obviously have a very poor understanding of your field.” The older professor gaped, tuned a bit crimson and walked off, while my friend who made the comment, shrugged and went on to complete his studies in science and get a lucrative position at CERN. As for me, I would always remember if a certain concept seemed too difficult to explain – at least on a basic level – then ‘the fault, dear Brutus, was not in our stars’ but in our overestimation of our own expertise. Being a sommelier is demanding; but the criteria for being a good one is simple. Your choice of words are there to help explain the quality of a wine rather than obfuscate it with erudite terminology. Though New York is rife with self-proclaimed connoisseurs who merrily toss around adjectives such as ‘buttery, toasty, foxy, and round”, it does not take long to discover the dissonance between the imaginary vintage whose bouquet is being described and the bottle of glorified vinegar being paraded in a flask. That this ‘swirl, sniff and sneer social set’ exists at all attests to the fact that in today’s

Dessert in a Glass – the Superb Passito Wines of the Aeolian Islands Story and photography by Manos Angelakis
I
n Italy, the volcanic Aeolian Islands are planted, almost exclusively, with Malvasia grapes; a grape that has its roots in the ancient Eastern Mediterranean. Mycenaean traders cultivated grapes in the Aeolian Islands as early as 2,000 BC. The Venetians, who controlled parts of the Peloponnese and Crete during the Renaissance, liked the sweet wine of Monemvasia so much they not only imported and traded that wine but also took vine cuttings and introduced them to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Sicily, and Sardinia, where the grape found a compatible climate and terroir. Malvasia is primarily a white grape, but it has a number of clones, including a red one called Malvasia Nera. Actually, the clone Malvasia delle Lipari is supposed to be the original Malvasia, named after the Peloponnesian fortified island and town of Monemvasia. Presently, most varieties of Malvasia are closely related to the Italian Malvasia Bianca that grows widely throughout the world in places like central and southern Italy, the San Joaquin Valley of California, the Greek Islands of Rhodes, Paros and Syros, the Canary Islands, Rioja, and Croatia to name but a few major producing areas. In central Italy, Malvasia is often blended with Trebbiano to add texture to the resulting wine and in Rioja it is blended with Macabeo to achieve the same result. The Malvasia delle Lipari that is planted in the Aeolian Islands produces golden, perfumed, flavorful wines with aromatic notes of apricots, musk, and almonds and flavors of honey and ripe Bosc pears. We tasted samples from a number of producers and they run the gamut from lightweight to full-bodied, off-dry to exceedingly sweet, and low to high alcohol. Most were rich and wonderfully aromatic Passito wines i.e. after picking, the very ripe grapes are dried on reed mats in the shade to increase the concentration and aromatics. Even though the varietal is called Malvasia delle Lipari (Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands), the wines I liked the most were produced on Salina Island, the second largest

island in the Aeolian archipelago, where Malvasia thrives on the rich volcanic soil. If you like sweet and aromatic wines, you will love these Passitos. They are a wonderful alternative to a French Sauternes. I liked the 2008 Passito from the Azienta Agricola Salvatore d’ Amico, a blend of 95% Malvasia and 5% Corinto Nero – a red grape introduced by ancient colonists from the city of Corinth. Unfortunately, this wine is not available outside Italy. But my favorite Passito was the Capofaro Malvasia di Salina. Intense gold in color with aromas of honeysuckle, fresh almonds, apricots and raisins, it is produced in Tenuta Capofaro, a vineyard surrounding the 5-star hotel and resort Capofaro.
Before fermentation, the grapes are dried on the flat roofs of the traditional looking farmhouses on the property that are now the hotel suites. The resort belongs to the famous Tasca d’ Almerita and winemaker Laura Orsi is responsible for this exceptional wine. This spectacular wine is now brought to the United States by a New York-based importer. It would pair beautifully with a terrine of foie gras or a fresh farmhouse Stilton. If you are a wine lover, you owe it to yourself to try this Passito. À santé!

ith an eye for edgy design and the drive to make her visions come to life, designer Lisa Jackson is no stranger to success. Beginning her career as a private Art and Antiques Consultant, she traveled the globe in search of exceptional art and rare antiques. Tony Cointreau Mother Teresa, Ethel Merman and Me By: Isaiah Negron
T
he life of Tony Cointreau, the singer and scion of the French liqueur family, is not the typical story of a child born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He overcame an abusive childhood by finding friendship with three famous women, Mother Teresa, the Broadway star Ethel Merman and Lee Lehman, the glamorous wife of Robert Lehman, the head of Lehman Brothers. These maternal figures helped Cointreau heal the scars caused by his emotionally absent mother and sadistic grandmother. Tony recalls, “I was told as a child I was too sensitive. That may have been, but I also had a lot of courage. I found, as I got older, they go very well together. They could hurt me, but never break me.” His first “adopted mother” was Lee Lehman, considered one of the ten most beautiful women in the world, alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. At 13, he was invited to a Halloween party the Lehmans were giving. “When I walked into the Lehman’s apartment for the first time, Lee looked at her daughter, pointed at me and said, ‘He’s ours.’ And I was,” Tony says. “Lee gave me unconditional love. It was beautiful.” Soon after, Tony spent the majority of his free time with the Lehmans, traveling the world and was treated as a member of their family. Tony met his second “mother” at 18, the legendary Broadway diva Ethel Merman.

They wert introduced backstage in her dressing room by her daughter, also named Ethel, while she was starring in “Gypsy.” Tony, again, became an instant part of their family. “After we watched the play, ‘Mom’ took us out afterwards where I met all of the people in show business. Ethel and I had the same instant connection that Lee and I had,” he says. “These connections went on for years and years, throughout their lifetimes.”
At 21, Tony began performing from Carnegie Hall to Las Vegas. Tony’s international reputation skyrocketed when he met Pierre Cardin in 1984. “He heard me sing in New York and wanted to launch my career in Europe,” he explains. “Six weeks later, I was on stage at Maxim’s in Paris with everybody in the world there, everybody.” Tony spent the next ten years recording and performing concerts across Europe. One of his biggest fans was Ethel Merman. “She sat through dozens and dozens of my shows and would introduce me saying, ‘This is Tony Cointreau and he’s a great singer!’,” he laughs. “One day after

a show she came to me and said, ‘That was great. Now you know what you’re doing.’ It was her way of expressing the greatest accolade she could give.” Despite his musical success and several years on the Cointreau board of directors, he felt something was missing in his life. He felt a passion to distribute the love that he had so freely been given to him by his “mothers. “I had seen a picture of a volunteer carrying a dying man in his arms in Calcutta and thought, ‘I have to do this.’” In 1989, he traveled to Calcutta, exposing himself to the harsh realities of extreme poverty for the first time. Following the example of Mother Teresa’s work in India, Tony returned to New York and volunteered his time at Gift of Love, Mother Theresa’s home for men dying of AIDS. “No one knew yet how it was transmitted, but I had no fear. Even my doctor told me not to go there, that it was too dangerous,” he recalls. “I told him if we couldn’t do this for each other as human beings, there is no hope.” Tony spent his days there mopping floors and comforting the residents whose lives were slowly fading away. He said “As I cared for these young men in their last days, I would sing softly to them and it would just renew them. I would see the fear leave them. It was magical.” He discovered the same instant rapport with mother Teresa he had with Lehman and Merman. “I didn’t know she was going to be in New York. I never thought of meeting her, yet there she was,” he said. “I treated her like an ordinary extraordinary woman. We would just talk and talk. And she had such great humor! That’s what I loved about Mother.” He traveled to Calcutta multiple times, at her request, accompanying her in her work with the poorest of the poor. “Sometimes after working we would be sitting out on the terrace talking and she would often ask me to sing for her.” In 1997, Tony and his partner of 48 years Jim Russo, returned to India to be with Mother Teresa for the last Easter of her life.

he news that stylist turned fashion designer L’Wren Scott was found hanging of an apparent suicide on March 17 in her Manhattan apartment, has left the fashion industry and celebrities reeling. Scott, whose body was discovered by her assistant, was also the longtime girlfriend of Mick Jagger. The legendary rock star, who was performing in Australia at the time of her death, is said to be devastated. Scott has styled A-listers including Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Elizabeth Taylor. She also coordinated Jagger’s wardrobe for the Rolling Stones’ 50 and Counting Tour in 2012.
