EDITOR’S NOTE EDITOR’S NOTE

We’ve finally marched into March (and not a moment too soon!). Hopefully, by the end of the month we’ll feel like we’re living in Manhattan and not the Artic tundra. Here at Resident, we are ready for spring and the pages within certainly reflect the change in seasons! It’s already October? I can’t believe it! Fall is here and it’s my favorite time of the year. Leaves are changing, kids are back to school, the weather is cooling and it means it’s our Entertainment Issue. To celebrate we have the (in) famous gang of The Gossip Table, Vh1’s instant tabloid show. MODERN EYE

FOR MODERN ART Y

ou know, come to think of it, when artsy-fartsy folk contemplate and ponder the query to yours truly, “George - who is the next Andy Warhol?” I always tend to reply – George Wayne is the next Andy Warhol, darling! And then when the curious artsyfartsy retorts, “And who is your Fred Hughes?” I tend to say that it’s the new art world genius that I have just unearthed, who goes by the name, Georges Berges. If you know anything about the history of modern art, you will then of course know that without Fred Hughes – his astute gatekeeper and business manager/ genius – Andy Warhol would have not been the master he was in his day. There was no Andy Warhol without the dapper Fred Hughes who many consider ‘the brain’ to Warhol’s prolific ‘brawn’ of creative genius.

One thing is clear this current art world wunderkind has one of the sharpest most astute minds in the art world and he is quickly carving a niche as one of the leading art experts on Chinese contemporary art. And so sat for curious George here, more than eager to pick

his brain as yours truly lays the foundation for his re-invention as “The next Andy Warhol.” Yes, laugh and scoff all you want but that is my intent! GEORGE WAYNE: GW considers you the new modern eye for modern art. And what impresses me most is your astute take on China and the burgeoning art movement there. GEORGES BERGES: When you think of it, China’s economy is transforming the global economy and everything is changing because of a rising China. But beyond that, what fascinates me is the cultural impact that China is having on the world. How is China affecting the global art community? And that is why I am flying to China again, because I want to further my embrace of the rising China and its undisputable growing influence of contemporary art and

that is why my focus these days is mostly on China. Money may come and go. Power may come and go, but when you make a cultural impact on society, that lasts forever. Cultural power is real power. That is the reason America continues to be the capital of the world, because of its influence on culture for generations and on an unrivaled global level. And I think more and more the Chinese are beginning to understand that cultural innovation will power their future cultural influence across continents. And what will drive that cultural empowerment? Art – art will drive that cultural empowerment of China and that is why, as I have said, that I have made the commitment to establish the Georges Berges Gallery foothold in China. My plan is to be the lead guy in China; the lead collector and art dealer discovering and nurturing talent from that region. I plan to find and discover and bring to the rest of the world those I consider China’s next generation of modern artists. GW: I am assuming from your flourish here that you must have discovered the next Chinese art superstar. GB: Today artists do not necessarily believe that they have to be in New York City to be discovered and gain relevance. There are very few art dealers who actually travel the world searching for new talent. For most art gallery folk, for them taking the L train to Bushwick is their idea of discovering new art

talent. I want to find the artist who is authentic and genuine and working in his or her own cultural context. And so if I have to go to China or if I have to go to India or Mexico to find that, then I will do so.

perception that Chinese art has to look a certain way. Shuishi is producing very Avant Garde modern art that is completely atypical for a Chinese artist. His work is fresh, modern and original.

I am not interested in the Chinese guy who moves to Brooklyn and paints like he thinks he is Basquiat. I would rather go to China and find the artist there who doesn’t want to leave, who is happy living in China and producing art that is revolutionary within the culture and society that he is in. And so yes, to the original question, I have signed to the Georges Berges Gallery the one artist I believe is the future superstar modern artist who just happens to live in China, Shuishi Liu. What I like about this artist is that he is challenging the perception of what Chinese art is in today’s world. Unlike Ai Weiwei who takes on the government and tries to challenge authority, Shuishi is challenging the artistic authorities and the

GW: Tell me a bit about your background? GB: I have been in the art world for about 10 years. My focus is on art and philanthropy. For me both are the two transformative mediums that I choose to devote my life to. So besides discovering future art stars I also raise money for non-profits such as UNITAR, which is the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. I grew up in San Diego, California of French and Mexican extract. I studied Clinical Psychology and then I went to Seton Hall for Graduate School and studied Art Administration and from there moved to New York. GW: George & Georges – love the way that rolls the tongue and harks well for our future collaboration. I cannot wait for the debut of my millennial art project – POPERATURE – at the Georges Berges Gallery in September to of course coincide with the debut of my book, Uncensored Vanities - being published by the iconic Harper Collins in August of 2015. Pop Art and Pop Literature from the mind of George Wayne. It is all going to be beyond genius – “Queenious” darlings! And I will be in touch.

Michael Nouri in NBC’s New Miniseries,

‘The Slap’ By W. A. Muller

V

eteran actor Michael Nouri is appearing in five of NBC’s eight-episode miniseries, The Slap. Based on the book by Christos Tsiolkas and Australian television series of the same name, The Slap is produced by Matchbox Pictures and stars Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Zachary Quinto, Melissa George, Thomas Sadoski and Brian Cox. Written and co-produced by Jon Robin Baitz (“Brothers & Sisters’), co-produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black”), and directed by Lisa Cholodenko (“The Kids are All Right”), The Slap takes an unflinching look at how one little slap can have a huge impact. The show follows Hector, played by Peter Sarsgaard (“Blue Jasmine,” “An Education”), a public servant and father who explodes when his hothead cousin slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. This moment ignites a chain of events that will uncover long-buried secrets within this group of friends and family that vigorously challenge the core values of everyone involved. Nouri, who has enjoyed a successful career spanning film (“The Proposal,” “Finding Forrester,”), television (“Damages,” “CSI: NY”), and theater (“Victor/Victoria” opposite Julie Andrews), will play Thanasis Korkoulis in The Slap, a successful attorney and childhood friend of Brian Cox’s character, Manolis, the patriarch of the family. On Monday, February 9, 2015, Nouri joined the all-star cast of The Slap who gathered for the New York Premiere Party hosted by NBC and Vanity Fair at The New Museum. On the red carpet, Nouri expressed his excitement for the show’s premiere, saying “the cast and crew have been just sensational to work with […] this has been an incredibly thrilling project to be a part of.” Nouri’s upcoming feature credits include “The Squeeze” which is being released in April, 2015 in which he also serves as a co-producer, “Teleios,” “The List,” and “Street Level,” in which he co-stars with Danny Trejo. Nouri recently co-starred in the feature film “Taken Away” which aired on Lifetime in Fall 2014. For more information: nbc.com/the-slap

Nicole Noonan

THE FAIRY GODMOTHER OF DIVORCE By Nathaniel Goehring

N

ovitas, a UK-based matrimonial financing company, has tapped divorce attorney Nicole Noonan, JD to take charge of its newly formed US operations. Novitas UK provides over 400 law firms with funds for divorce proceedings, and now Founder and Managing Director, Jason Reeve, has his sight set on exponential growth of the company’s market share in the United States. Reeve commented, “Having Nicole Noonan, who is both a top lawyer and a leader in her field, who has immersed herself professionally in every aspect of divorce law, was essential.” As the former founder and CEO of National Divorce Capital, Inc., Noonan was the prime candidate for the job. “I think Novitas US can become even bigger than Novitas UK,” says Noonan, regarding plans for the future. Dubbed “The Fairy Godmother” of divorce for her prowess in financially aiding divorcées to help them negotiate favorable settlements with their more-moneyed spouses, Noonan does not take her moniker lightly. “It’s an honor. I try to live up to it every day,” she says. Practicing divorce law during the time of the US housing market implosion, Noonan saw how essential outside cash infusions could be from both the viewpoint of the law firm and the litigant. “I heard that this service was available in the UK and I saw a need for it in the US,” she says. “I was aware of Novitas and I was impressed by their streamlined way of underwriting potential business. It’s all webbased and simple as possible from an attorney/client perspective.” As CEO of Novitas US, Noonan does not provide legal or financial advice. Those decisions remain between lawyers and their clients. To ensure each client’s ability to repay Novitas, pending a favorable settlement, Noonan and her colleagues evaluate the entire marital asset pool as well as the individual substance and reputation of the attorney in question. There is the possibility of a lost investment in cases that do not resolve the way in which Novitas predicts. However, Noonan explains with complete confidence, “Those cases are few and far between. If you do your due diligence, it shouldn’t be an issue.” Clients often do not have the liquidity to engage in divorce proceedings or to afford living expenses such as mortgage payments, school tuition and other personal costs during the proceedings. Novitas funds can “level the playing field,” enabling litigants to fund their attorney and expert fees while maintaining their standard of living. Repayments are not made until an equitable settlement is reached. Novitas is designed to provide funding so that no one is forced into a settlement less than they deserve, and both men and women turn to Novitas to be empowered with funding. Divorce funding recently made headlines with the high profile case of billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen’s divorce. However, as Noonan stated, “My challenge is not providing the funding, it’s getting people to know this resource even exists.” In an age where 50% of marriages end in divorce, it seems as though there has never been a better time to spread such awareness. I

’m waiting for better angels” sings the recently deceased ‘it’s my party’ legend Lesley Gore on her last album Ever Since. Not since Johnny Cash did a cover of ‘Hurt’ has an aging icon found a better fit. Had Sondheim’s Desiree been a former pop icon rather than an actress, this rendition would have replaced her Send in the Clowns reprise. While Gore’s gravelly but tender tone evokes a kind of weltschmerz, the lyrics beckon change. The thought provoking arrangement that juxtaposes a cabaret sensibility with melancholic folk elements is the brainchild of Blake Morgan. Just months after releasing the song on his own album, Burning Daylight, Morgan handed it over to Gore. His passion to selflessly do what’s best for a song speaks tomes about his commitment to music. It should come as little surprise that the artist behind Better Angels has been on a Quixotic mission ever since: a mission to empower music’s prophets, defrock its corrupt clergy and unmask its fraudulent angels – especially those like Tim Westergren, Pandora Radio’s co-founder. While cashing in shares at a steady rate of one million per month, Westergren – who presents himself as a selfsacrificing music industry savior – claimed his business model was unsustainable unless musicians agreed to lower their royalties. Morgan responded, ruffling this business angel’s feathers with polite but poignant criticism. His remonstrations went viral shortly after their email exchanges got the attention of the Huffington Post. The message was heard: there was something seriously wrong with a content-providing service (Pandora) lobbying already underpaid content creators (musicians) to martyr themselves for a place on a heavenly sound cloud where only the harp would go unpaid.

By Rory Winston Photos by Noam Galai/Getty Images

By January 2014, Morgan took on the music industry’s most sacred order, terrestrial radio. As Morgan’s #irespectmusic floated through cyberspace, musicians woke from their stupor: America was among the only countries where radio stations didn’t compensate musicians for airplay - ‘while songwriters like Otis Redding receive royalties, performers like Aretha Franklin didn’t get any Re-s-p-e-c-t in the form of money.’ Countries that shared American radio’s slave labor policy: North Korea, Iran, Vietnam and China (the latter, incidentally, in the process of changing their legislation). Also, since US based stations didn’t pay foreign musicians, foreign stations wouldn’t pay ours. Despite having the highest number of hits internationally, American musicians received no royalties. Morgan’s apostasy was soon embraced by everyone from Taylor Swift to Pink Floyd. In the words of Morgan’s classic, “Better late than not at all; better to make the break than take the fall.”

The Velvet Revolutionary

When it comes to clean breaks, Morgan excels. Though far from being a media-hungry iconoclast, Morgan has had his share of ‘velvet revolutions.’ The charismatic and lanky artist with a disarming smile and raconteur’s wit spoke to the Resident about the road less traveled. Sometime after finishing Berklee College of music and recording six raw demos, Morgan got signed to the shortlived N2K label by the legendary Phil Ramone. As Morgan explains, “People often think a big record deal is the dream-come-true. For me it felt like seasickness. You feel

38 • Resident March 2015

like you’re drowning but to your friends it looks like you’ve just boarded a cruise ship and you’re riding the waves. Anyway, I’m at my album’s first strategy meeting – incidentally, uninvited – and someone from the label informs us that I’ve just topped at number 8 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. So the astute marketing expert asks, ‘That’s great but does someone know how many are ahead of him?’ And he wasn’t joking. Heartbreaking, really. My job is to play, sing, create… and here I am with supposed experts… Needless to say, I was already looking for a way out of my 7 album contract. Phil was cool about it and obliged. Six months later the company goes down like the Titanic. And no wonder. I mean, when my record came out, they invested 100,000 dollars in a massive Billboard ad with a big picture of me. Public response: ‘who the hell is this guy? He doesn’t even have a record out.’ It just pissed people off. Same money… I could have used for making a great record… Hell, 10 great records.” Released from his contract, Morgan returned to ‘label-hunting and showcasing.’ In his words, “The most unmusical un-rock and roll thing you can possibly be involved in. Playing for suits at 4 in the afternoon.” Morgan continues as if in reverie, “So there I am walking with my mom, and I tell her that in the end I’ll probably wind up with an unsatisfying deal like before, and if I had any guts I’d take all the musicians who’ve recently asked me to produce their demos and start my own label. So my mom turns to me and - with best intentions - says, ‘yeah, if you had any guts that is what you’d do.’ It was an epiphany. Right there while walking on 5th Avenue and 11th, I suddenly decided that’s exactly what I had to do. I launched my own label, ECR (Engine Company Records) from my laptop a few months later. And it’s been going for over 13 years now.” While those years have been the recorded worst in music history - with labels either having gone belly up or having shrunken by as much as 90% ECR has grown. Their break-even rate on albums - rather than being the usual 2% (a figure based on the nearly 75,000 albums that came out last year) – is a steady 80%. The reason for the difference, as Morgan explains, “At ECR, success is measured by the high note as much as it is by the bottom line”. In practice, Morgan’s strategy is simple: create the best music possible, music the artist is proud of. A marketing plan only comes into it after this phase is complete. “99.9% of labels”, Morgan affirms, “start with ‘what’ll make us money’ before looking for the best music. Their whole raison d’être should be to help win an audience for an artist they believe in rather than believe in an artist that can help them get an audience. That’s why I only sign artists I can see myself having a long-term relationship with. The idea of working on 7 records over a 10-year period is inspiring. It excites me as an artist, as a producer and as a label owner.”

contracts to distribute and publish a given work. As for what stops an artist from going elsewhere…? “Nothing,” says Morgan candidly, “but since our inception, no one has ever wanted to leave.” The simple reason, Morgan avers, is that ” We’re in a partnership with the artists – we’re both forced to give a constant 100%.” Morgan’s metaphor: “Margaret Atwood once wrote that ‘wanting to hang out with famous people because you admire their work is like wanting to meet a duck because you love pate’. It’s senseless to own the artists. It’s a fatal mistake that every other label (as far as he knows) makes.”

Lesley Gore’s Last Resting Place

Despite ECR Music Groups diversity in genre, there is a definite Blake Morgan signature on the entire artist rostrum. The emphasis remains genuinely evocative melodies and moods over contrived soundscapes. It takes no more than a listen to the Jazz-inflected sultry sound of the Finnish born singer Janita to tell what direction her new album will be headed in. “Beautiful,” Morgan muses, “2 years in the studio and her album’s finally ready to come out. It took about the same amount of time for Melissa Giges whose Just When I Let Go came out last summer… Melissa’s been on tour, TV, and has a new video coming out. Then there’s David Cloyd out of Buffalo who’s in recording. His album’s due next year. Together with myself, and the late Lesley Gore these are our cornerstone artists.” Morgan describes his own most recent album, Diamonds in the Dark, as a Dorothy discovering Wonderland experience. Listening to Morgan sing “you’re the best bad idea I ever had”, one senses how extraordinary it must feel to fall hopelessly in love with something as irrational as making music. After all, if these are Morgan’s ‘best bad ideas,’ even his ‘worst good ideas’ are bound to land Grammies. Forever evolving, Morgan remains a favorite of alternative rock fans and music aficionados alike. From his well lauded debut album, Anger’s Candy, to his more rumantive pieces that sound like urban cantorials for an agnostic age, the singer/producer/ composer/independent label owner Morgan has always done precisely what he wants by maximizing the means at his disposal. Like the late great Lesley Gore, Morgan has gone through life telling everyone from the major labels to those like Pandora “You don’t own me.”

Another unique element: “We sign works, not artists.” Unlike other labels, ECR only makes license

how long we can keep going.” Her passion and interest in thoroughbreds prompted her entry to racing following a successful career as a model with Wilhelmina and Ford. She is also an alumna of The Royal Ballet School in London and the School of American Ballet. “I think the industry is happy to embrace my syndication as we bring enthusiasm, joy, honesty, integrity and a touch of beauty as well,” Sheila said. “Sound, healthy, and happy horses are my goal. Of course I can dream for The Triple Crown yet be thrilled with a graded stake win. Being in the winner’s circle is pure joy as I’ve now had a great many to appreciate. Winning is an incredible feeling, but to accept defeat

with grace is a challenging must.” Since teaming up with Linda Rice, the world’s top female trainer, in 2013, the dazzling duo has been a formidable pair on the racetrack. “I have great respect for Linda. She became the first partner in Lady Sheila Stable. She is the most dedicated trainer I know,” Rosenblum says. “Linda doesn’t know what a sick day means, as she has only missed work once in the time we’ve been working together.” The stable’s top runner, La Verdad, has become one of the best New York-breds in training and has won six of eleven starts in 2014, including the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap at Aq-

They’re the C.E.O.’s of the household.” Another of Sheila’s passions comes in the form of her philanthropic work. This spring, she will be honored along with her 18-yearold daughter Kara with the Par Excellence Award at the March of Dimes’ upcoming “Spirit of Beauty” luncheon on May 11th, one day after Mother’s Day. Sheila has been an advocate for the charity, which works to help moms have full-term pregnancies, for over ten years and has been on the board for over 5 years. “When I started Lady Sheila Stable, my two children were getting older and I felt it was the right time in my life to devote the hours needed and learn more about my passion for horses and the thoroughbred racing business,” she explains. “I am always there for my family and they want to see me succeed in this as well. It’s great to have them behind me for support. Now I balance that love with my

love of horses.” She’s instilled the spirit of generosity into her children as well; her daughter is an intern at March of Dimes and has created a youth group for the organization. Sheila has always known that although she can’t save the entire world, she can do everything in her power to save a person. Fifteen years ago, she did just that without even initially realizing it when she met a two year old named Destiny, who was born to an incarcerated mother and an unknown father, at Hale House. She instantly connected with the child and became an advocate, mentor and mother figure to the now 16-year-old, who is now looking at colleges. “I’ve been a mentor to a foster daughter for the past 14 years. It has allowed me to bring more love into my life and give that love back,” confides Sheila. “That extends to everything I do, from my family, to my horses. I’ve had misfortune, but the good has far outweighed the bad.” Sheila, who brought her two children Erik and Kara to Hale House weekly, wanted to make sure they knew what the real world looked like with all its positivity and negativity. Sheila had Destiny volunteer at Green Chimneys, which helps children who have emotional and behavioral challenges by having them interact with animals.

Stable Two, a horse syndicate that is owned solely by women, including Douglas Elliman C.E.O. Dottie Herman, “Real Housewife” Jill Zarin, Diane Davis, Iris Smith, Jessie Laiken and Donna Bernstein. “I think women have to work just a little bit harder to prove ourselves in a male-dominated industry,” Rosenblum says. “I’m an all or nothing person and I passionately put my heart into everything I do, from my kids to my horses.” Rosenblum recently celebrated the acquisition of three new two-year-old fillies under the Lady Sheila Stable Two colors that will hit the track this spring. Sheila looks forward to even more successes in 2015. “I think I’m a bit of what the industry wants and needs right now: more women plus a little bit of glamour. I’m going to dream, as always, to win the Triple Crown or get a Stakes win. I am going to continue to raise sound horses. Without sound horses, there are no horses. This year I’m going to continue to further my racing syndicate and go for as many wins as we can.” For more information: ladysheilastabletwo.com

No Knife Facelift with Little or No down time? By Rafael G. Magana, M.D.

T

his FDA approved technology seems to be taking over the world of aesthetics, even though the idea and technology have been around for much longer. Of the fast and non-invasive solutions to natural appearing facial rejuvenation, it has a merit that must be recognized. It actually works! In fact, we in the plastic surgery community haven’t seen anything like this since we were wowed by the effects of Ablative Fraxel LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) on skin contraction with collagen formation and skin rejuvenation. The results were and are frankly impressive, but with trade offs, namely… some pain, discomfort and a few days of downtime. The new technique I have mentioned is based on Ultrasound energy (Ulthera) not LASER. Not only is the functional principle fascinating from the scientific point of view, but also, it genuinely creates a facelift that looks natural. How does it do this you may ask? In a nutshell, it delivers energy under direct visu-

alization with ultrasound to the different layers of the face and neck. It does so by targeting tiny intermittent rows of tissue to which it delivers the energy. This energy denatures (unravels) the local flaccid collagen leaving small bridges of normal tissue. The tissues then contracts through the formation of new collagen (Neo Collagen formation), which is better-aligned giving tension to the muscle, subcutaneous tissues and Skin (all three layers targeted separately). This is what a young face normally possesses, “aligned and full tissues - tensile strength that has not yet given in to our enemy, the combination of gravity and tissue laxity. Collagen formation is a thing of wonder and a term that is overused in the beauty and cosmetic industry without really defining mechanisms or degree of collagen formation An Ultrasound facelift however, is the real deal. It creates new collagen in different layers and contracts flaccid tissues; this is why it is so effective. No other technology does this in the three layers I mentioned. When applied with experienced hands, it gives a dramatic initial result that continues to progress with time (months) as collagen continues to form over the entire year following the procedure. It does not have the stigmata of a traditional surgical facelift. It does not require Anesthesia and may be done in the office. It can even be used in areas such as the lower eyelid and the décolletage. Arguably, it is superior to FRAXEL LASER because of less downtime, less discomfort and progressive contraction of multiple layers of tissue also with new collagen formation. Another very appealing feature about this technology is that people will start to notice it

42 • Resident Macrh 2015

and not quite be able to “put their finger” on what the secret is, because it progresses with time and changes become visible in days. This is gold, because as the new collagen forms and creates contraction of the flaccid tissues, it is like having ongoing facial rejuvenation that looks better and better over the subsequent weeks and persists. My practice uses ultrasound facelifts as a part of its armamentarium to defy the stigma of age in a way that appears natural and gives a pleasant and radiant appearance with more defined and youthful facial features. It is a welcome addition and one that is a standalone technology that I use in combination with other technologies for truly remarkable results. Ultrasound (Ulthera) facelifts and combination treatments are already available at “facelift ultra” on Park Avenue and are applied exclusively by a plastic surgeon. IS YOUR SMILE AGING YOU? By Irene Grafman, D.D.S.

Patient wanted a natural smile. Her severely worn teeth were bonded to restore youth to her smile and give her a more balanced appearance.

I

t would surprise you how many ways a dentist can help with your quest for youth. Through modern dentistry we can not only help change the shape of your teeth, but the shape of your face and make you look and feel younger - without surgery or fillers. Cosmetic procedures are the most commonly known and practiced anti-aging procedures, but a new wave of dentistry is not only looking at your teeth but at your overall health. Your personal anti-aging prescription are found in these 3 main aspects of your smile and health:

1. Aesthetics (Whitening, Bonding, & Veneers) Whitening is the easiest way to take a few years off your appearance and to brighten your smile. Reversing this discoloration is an easy and inexpensive way to fight the aging process. Bonding is one of the most conservative procedures to whiten and reshape your teeth and thus, your smile. With bonding we can lengthen, straighten and even whiten teeth while not having to take away tooth structure. If your teeth are poorly shaped, crooked, discolored or worn down, bonding can completely redesign your smile and improve the shape of your face. Veneers are one of the fastest and most effective ways to create a youthful smile. By creating a white, straight, and well proportioned smile, we can remove years off of your appearance. Porcelain Veneers allow us to improve severely misshapen teeth, reposition crooked teeth and lengthen ground down short teeth.

2. Facial Development Facial aging is due to loss of volume of both hard and soft tissue. During the aging process, we lose fatty tissue, and the bones of the face shrink in size. As the bones shrink, our skin starts to sag, creating the appearance of wrinkles. Traditionally this loss of volume has been replaced with injections of facial dermal filler such as Restylane®. The revolutionary appliances I work with help increase bone volume, which treats the underlying problem and decreases the appearance of wrinkles, lines and folds; therefore giving you a more balanced appearance. Additionally, you will find improvements with a wider smile, higher cheekbones, less tired looking eyes, as well as improved quality of sleep. The most amazing part is these only worn at night. The way your face develops also affects development of your jaws and how your teeth come together. Re-establishing a correct bite will improve the proportions of the face and make you look younger.

In my practice, since I focus primarily on anti-aging, I have developed a whole person approach to making you look and feel younger through alternative dentistry. Through extensive continuing education in all areas of dental, holistic, and aesthetic approaches, I have developed and easy and relaxed way for you to achieve youth and health. 3. Improve quality of Sleep Lack of sleep affects not only your energy and quality of life but how you look (and function). It’s the little things like bags under the eyes and a drawn appearance that make you look older. Poor sleep can be due to many factors. After a complete evaluation we, together, decide on the best form of treatment for your situation. One of the best ways to instantly achieve better quality sleep is through an oral sleep appliance which will change your wellbeing in ways you can’t even imagine and take years off your face while adding years to your life.

After all, when it comes to flights of fancy, gravity defying leaps in branding, elevating the public’s appreciation for a product, and a sky’s-the-limit mentality as regards premium quality, Avión was a perfect place to begin.

Airborne

Armed with an M.B.A., Ken Austin went from Price Waterhouse to Gallo to Seagram to Marquis Jet and also serving on boards such as Steve Case’s FlexCar (merged with ZipCar) – each of these roles an essential component in bringing to life a vision that was about to be born. As Ken is the first to admit, “My time at Gallo and Seagram taught me a lot. I learned about what the ‘drink space’ entails. I could afford to make my mistakes and grow having the safety net of large organizations. Our company President at Avion, Jenna Fagnan, also did her time in this sector working for

Moët Hennessy. This is a real advantage as compared with entrepreneurs who think they can catapult themselves into the billions by whimsically deciding to come up with the next spirit. Experience counts. It helps you know what to look for. The fact that I was one of the guys who started Marquis Jet also gave me clearer insight into high end luxury products and what the select consumer demands. In a sense, I wanted Avión to taste and feel like flying a private jet… pure luxury.” The inception of the Avión Tequila concept, however, did not come by way of careful deliberation but arrived with the force of a revelation. As Ken admits, “Intuition is my best ally… having the spider senses telling me whether this or that person is right to align with, knowing if a brand or product will serve a consumer need or finding a need that people aren’t even aware exists yet comes from a gut feeling.”

The Script

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood movie, Ken’s intuition literally took flight: Ken sits at a closed NetJets poker tournament that goes down annually in Vegas. High stakes. (figu-

Jesus Maria in Jalisco, Mexico. Austin is eying the agave plantations. At 7000 feet above sea level, this is the highest elevation in the region. The rich soil and major temperature swings make this the most sought-after location for growing what is a considerably naturally sweeter agave. But Austin wants more. He wants to create an ultra premium tequila – one that people can drink without getting the ‘burn’ – one without that bitter aftertaste that Denis Leary in No Cure for Cancer referred to as the ‘old whiskey drinker’s face’. It is this ‘burn’ that keeps women at arms distance from the spirit, and the same burn that makes many mistakenly think of tequila as solely an ingredient in a cocktail or a spirit to be mitigated by limes and salt.

Passing Go

Weeks pass. Austin works day and night with the Master Distiller. Hand-harvesting, roasting in brick ovens for three days, getting rid of the heads and tails or the part we don’t necessarily want to drink of the distillate. Employing a proprietary ultra-slow filtration process, it is clear that yield or efficiency is a secondary issue. As Ken explains, “Our goal wasn’t money. The mission was to create a liquid of extreme purity that isn’t “off the shelf” tequila. One that maximized the flavor of a crop that took seven to ten years just to grow. It wasn’t just about going to a distillery and starting a brand. We go the extra mile without compromise. We don’t cut corners. It’s all about creating a consistently great product. To this day, I taste every single batch that’s bottled.”

ratively) Small circle. As the angle widens, we see Warren Buffett warily eying him across the poker table. The two men know each other. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway owns NetJets Aviation while Ken is president of Marquis Jet. It’s Austin’s play. He pauses; then orders tequila from the cocktail waitress. Buffett is wondering about Austin’s hand and strikes up a conversation about the Mexican spirit. Austin answers in stride, explaining that he is a “tequila guy” and aside from Patron there were essentially no key players to challenge the brand. Buffett finds this odd and says that is very interesting. Austin sips his drink and as he explains, “that was the moment I had the epiphany” and decided to head to Mexico to work on creating a superior ultra premium sipping tequila. The scene ends without us being told who won the tournament. Austin does say he knocked out his chum Dean Cane (known to many as Superman) and that Janet Gretzky who is a “heck of a poker player” ultimately knocked him out. One week later, Austin is on a plane to Mexico – on his way to visit a family that has grown agave for 5 generations – the plant known for producing tequila.

bottle was designed with just such a task in mind. As a side note, actor Bob Odenkirk who was Mark Cubans partner played Ken Austin on Entourage. “The show made a big difference,” says Austin. “But we were only in NY and Cali at the time and most people didn’t even realize the brand was real or was such a high quality tequila. It may have brought us the 21 to 45 year old audience but we’d still get questions like ‘which came first the brand or the show?’ and this is years after I created the product.”

Flying High

By 2012, Avión had won the highly prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition in the category of “World’s best White Spirit” and “World;’s best tasting Tequila”, having beat out all tequilas, vodkas, gins and white rums in a blindfolded taste test by scores of industry experts. As with Entourage, Avión was once again included in pop culture without any marketing money being transferred: Young Jeezy has mentioned the brand in his lyrics in the company of Jaguars, Mercedes, Audemars, and hot women who were “On the Avion”. Meeting up with Jeezy months later, Austin was impressed by his perspicacity and work ethic and soon decided to make the hip-hop mogul his Multicultural Advisor. “The fact is, African American consumers are extraordinarily brand loyal and quality counts. They don’t

The spirit hit the market in 2010. As for the next chapter in Austin’s story… Fans of HBO’s hit TV show classic, Entourage, are likely familiar with some of the aspects. The brand did more than make an appearance in the show; it became an essential component of the plot, a driving force behind the main characters. No product placement, no marketing money devoted to its inclusion, Avión was written into the script in an attempt by Doug Ellin (close friend of Austin and partner Kenny Dichter) to increase interest in the character Turtle. Turtle would be a kind of obsessed Hollywood entrepreneur with Austin’s interests. All the former idiosyncrasies of the character would remain but he would also take on parts of Austin’s own obsession. When we hear Turtle’s dialogue: “slow down; the bottle is a cool shape, I’ll admit that; but I’ve promoted clubs and I’ve bartended and the simple fact is that you need a bottle that’s easy to grip,” the information came directly from Austin’s own concerns as the Avión

get respected enough from marketers. It usually takes about 10 years to earn their trust as a brand, but in our case, we did it in 3 years. I think it’s because everyone can sense there are real people behind this product. Tequila itself doesn’t discriminate as mostly everyone will drink a fine tequila. Unlike other brands that could point to a target specific audience, our audience is anyone with good taste. The sole reasons we’re not the most expensive tequila is because I want the brand to remain an affordable luxury to all. Remaining attainable is as important to me as maintaining premium quality based on my personal values.” By late 2014, Pernod Ricard - that had initially bought a 20% stake of Avión back in 2011 - upped its interest in company’s holdings by investing over 100 million in order to gain majority. “Pernod Ricard’s involvement was and is indispensible in terms of distribution. They can get into markets and accounts that are difficult for entrepreneurs like us. The better we did, the more the competition used its sheer size to try and stop us. Pernod Ricard put an end to that imbalance. The brand is still run by me and my team, but now that Pernod Ricard has more skin in the game, we are getting into a way larger number of markets. In tequila, there’s a limited window to become an iconic brand. We aren’t there yet in the sense that our brand is a staple in every bar the same way that Absolute Vodka, The Glenlivet or Jameson Irish whiskey is but, that said, we are well on our way and managing to break through in a market with an otherwise limited shelf and bar space. It is an amazing feeling to see people now requesting Avion in restaurants, bars and liquor stores”

When asked what accounts for his success, Austin doesn’t hesitate: “People, product and belief”, then after a brief pause, “Look, luck helps but luck many times is no accident. By people, I mean surrounding yourself with people you like and trust – those who are smart and very positive thinkers. Not cheerfully oblivious, mind you. Because I certainly keep a distance from Yes people and sycophants. I love people who are up for a challenge and know things can be done if they really try and work out how. Negativity is way too easy. It’s lazy thinking. Believing in things that may not be in the realm of the probable but are definitely possible is essential for any entrepreneur. You need to actually be able to envision results, to visualize them in your head. Working with people you enjoy makes you work harder because days don’t feel long and you want to win with and for them.”

Based in New York, Austin – in the words of Jeezy – ‘puts on for his city’. As Ken says, “Being part of this city is a big advantage and I love New York. It’s a clean market with a strict liquor authority, which I love. Brands really have to play fair here. I was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island and still work most of the time in the city when not on the road. Bartenders and consumers here are very diverse, demanding and savvy. I learn a hell of a lot from them on a regular basis.” Now that Avión has mastered its many lines - Silver, Reposado (aged six months), Anejo (aged 2 years), Espresso Liqueur (with Italian espresso), and its highly sought after Reserva 44 (aged 43 months in oak whiskey barrels and an additional month in petite oak barrels) – and the bottle designs have been perfected, and Pernod Ricard is distributing, what was left for Austin to busy himself with? “Besides brand related things, mostly blocking and tackling… meaning getting everyone to taste Avión at least once and hopefully falling in love with it.” As my Feature Editor and I reread the final draft of the Austin interview, we decided a final toast was in order. And so we downed a glass of his remarkable tequila and called it a day. It did not take long before the two of us looked at each other, recalling Austin’s final words: “Once people taste Avión, it’s very hard to go back to drinking anything else.” For more information: tequilaavion.com

Johnny On The Spot By W. A. Muller

Celebrity Grime Fighter fills you in on the dirty little details

J

ohnny On The Spot” is actually John Mahdessian, the President and owner of The Madame Paulette Organization. Resident sat down with John to discuss details on why every garment he touches look like new! Resident: Why are you the best in NYC, possibly the world? John Mahdessian: Our cornerstone is our attention to detail, and our business model is unprecedented in the industry. We possess the knowledge and experience to exceed our clients’ expectations, so we are willing to tackle challenges that most other cleaners would refuse. R: How do you cope with new fabrics? JM: Fashion houses are constantly coming up with new compositions. R: How do you know how to handle it? JM: Working hand-in-hand with many designers (including Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Vera Wang and Angel Sanchez), we test their fabrics and pre-production pieces to dictate proper care labels for FTC compliance. We are challenged daily with new fabric compositions that do not respond to conventional cleaning methods. We take all precautionary measures to methodically test fabrics, embellishments, and trimmings to dictate which methods will safely clean these new fabric compositions and finished creations. Madame Paulette has some of the biggest names in the industry using their services.

R: Name one of your biggest and best fashion clients? JM: Anna Wintour is by far one of our very favorite long-standing clients. Understanding and preserving fashion history is what we live for; so of course, Anna is by far unmatched! Maintaining her garments on a regular basis is an honor; but cleaning, restoring, digitally cataloging and preserving every one-of-a-kind haute couture creation she showcases

is an experience beyond one’s wildest dreams! R: We hear that you are the longest standing commercial tenant in the landmark building the “Manhattan House”? JM: Yes, this is accurate as our flagship boutique located at 1255 Second Avenue (between 65th and 66th Streets) has been at the same location for over 55 years. This is where Grace Kelly and Benny Goodman lived. Thinking about how much money I paid in rent over the last 55 years makes me cringe. I could have bought the building! or fall 2015 is about the natural undone look. The inspiration was trust fund “it girls” without a care in the world who woke up the next day from an excessive night of partying. There’s a certain level of confidence with their effortless beauty mixed with an indifference of what other’s think. Makeup palettes were kept natural and neutral with glowing skin and a punch of color on the lip. Hair was coiffed and then brushed out to give a bed head or “the day after a blow out” look without showing any displays of primp and polish. One of the premier hair/makeup services was BELLA on Demand. The company sprinkled talent all over Mercedes Benz Fashion week working with Malan Breton, Sonja Morgan of The Real Housewives of New York, Rent the Runway and hosted a VIP party at the London Hotel announcing a once in a lifetime boudoir photography experience only available through Bella on Demand Beauty. To learn more about BELLA and all of their great services go to wearebella.com. BELLA believes in 24/7 customer service. Feel free to speak to BELLA anytime at 917.903.1084.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FALL 2015 By Hillary Latos

eld during one of the coldest weeks in over 20 years, attendees and designers had winter on their mind with a plethora of chunky sweaters, rich jewel tones, furs, hats and coats as the statement accessory. This season saw a crop of vibrant new designers showing at the tents for the first time, which will be the last time at Lincoln Center. Typical of the fashion world to keep the world guessing, a new home for the spring shows has yet to be determined.

hortly after Ballet Russe’s Parisian debut of Scheherazade in 1910, couturier Paul Poiret ran from the theater as though seized by a revelation. For the next few months he immersed himself in studying everything from harems to geishas to Chinese ceramics. Integrating Orientalism into European design, he harmonized exotic motifs with his own period’s aesthetics. While his sensibility remained incontrovertibly French, the themes strayed as Far East as the zeitgeist would allow. Paradigm shifts in art and design have always been more about infusing an existent tradition with nuance than about abandoning the conventions entirely. The ability to revisit our world with fresh eyes and imbue familiar forms with unfamiliar perspectives was as true for Elsa Schiaparelli (who used inspiration by surrealists like Dali) as it was for Claire McCardell who saw the movements of sports through an artistic filter in much the same way Nijinsky had seen it while choreographing Jeux years earlier. A similar notion of incorporation and cultural cross-pollination holds for the highly gifted contemporary couple that makes up the prestigious brand, Hanley Mellon –HM (not to be confused with H&M) While the M of their HM brand stands for Matthew Mellon, the H belongs to none other than Nicole Hanley, who - having studied philosophy, political science and economics at Oxford in New College – carries her interdisciplinary vision as well as her insouciance wherever she goes. The Greenwich Connecticut born entrepreneur is a living reminder that certain people have a knack for transforming their environment simply by showing up.

It is daylight, New York. We are sitting in her apartment. Such is Nicole’s quiescence that I get the distinct impression that were I to open her door, what I would find outside is not a hallway but a gently bobbing yacht on the sun-glazed waters of the Cotes d’Azur. Nicole’s elongated features stretch across her spacious room. The milieu shifts again from grandiose to cozy. Nicole smiles as I take a seat. Explaining that she has an easy time to talk about most anything except herself, I stammer ‘so tell me about yourself.’ Nicole gives way to a mellifluous giggle that ends in a sigh. Her laughter is both genuine and contagious. “Okay, well, to begin with I had several different internships starting in high school,” she confides, “There was fashion, politics, finance, decorating. As you can tell, I had no real sense of where I was headed.” By way of explanation: “Thus the ensuing philosophy courses in university…” There is an exciting air to her movements; with understated gestures but expressive eyes, Nicole explains how her early summers were for experimentation. “I learnt about many industries before realizing what really stirs me.” These experiences proved invaluable, as did her subsequent four years at Ralph Lauren. By the time she had her own line, there would be little she would be unfamiliar with in terms of fashion. “At Ralph Lauren, I started as assistant to the Senior VP and VP of children’s design and for his Blue Label.” She recalls, “They really watch you. My boss put me on the Rugby Line’s conceptual design team and everyone was just so talented that it inspired me to work around the clock, making me feel there were ideas worth being passionate about.” Nicole eventually landed a styling position. Noticing her drawings one day, a colleague encouraged her to show them and pursue her own line. “I don’t know how I found the courage. It feels more like I blacked out, and by the time I awoke it was done,” reflects Nicole.

Nicole throws her head back with a winsome air as she announces, “You know, seemingly low level jobs taught me the most. People assume when you start out you’re doing unimportant things but –.“ As if making sense of it for the first time, Nicole proclaims, “The fact is, managing the Senior VP’s calendar put me at a great advantage when I started out on my own. I learnt the whole fashion thing right then and there.”

weaves to pastel colors to Scottish plaid and tartan, their Kenya is not some selfindulgent Lion King theme park. Like most real design, it is highly personal and born of interaction. “We worked with the Maasai junior elder and recruited his wife to collaborate on the creation of our necklaces,” says Nicole. “This doesn’t mean,” she continues, “we attempted to recreate authentic tribal ar-

When Nicole’s line finally came out it consisted of three tops and dresses. “I started building and trademarking,” she states. “And I opened my little Upper East Side store. Pretty soon, however, Matt and I got together - we got married, had 2 kids and, well, at some point, I shelved the operation.”

“Initially,” explains Nicole, “we were drawn to Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. It’s an amazing fashion school with some of today’s most remarkable talents. We also realized Antwerp was a portal between the New World and the Old, between the US and Africa, between our past and present. In fact, the Red Star Museum sports mankind’s earliest remains from… of all places, Kenya. It was serendipitous to note that where we had landed tied in with where we had been.”

Nicole and Matt did eventually decide to do something together. As the brains behind Jimmy Choo’s men’s shoes collection as well as the founder of the prestigious Harry’s of London, Matt had been in the game for a while. Boasting the revolutionary dress shoe with sneaker sole, Matt’s signature fusion design attracted jetsetters and politicos alike. A lifestyle brand with his wife was a natural next step. As Nicole explains, “Our collections are based on our travels – they each have their very own cultural references, each demanding an entirely different approach. The results are as unexpected as they are inspired.” Though often inspired by remote landscapes and cultures, the Hanley Mellon collections eschew ethno-kitsch. For them, travel is a springboard to reinvention, a catalyst to finding out more about who we are in the context of others. Case in point: Hanley Mellon’s Spring 2015 Kenya collection. Think ‘Kenya’ and ‘fashion’ and one can’t help but conjure forth a host of exploitative images from generic tribal symbolism to uninspired safari motifs with bright colors. Not so with the Hanley Mellon variation. From net-like

Hanley Mellon’s Pre-Fall collection, Northern Renaissance, is less about a location than it is a journey into the 15th Century with contemporary eyes. Reinterpretation is key: What may once have passed for a male tunic returns in the form of a casual dress. With olive greens, sapphires and chartreuses tones informing velvets and silks, it is a Van Eyck canvas come to life. As for the upcoming Fall Collection, it pays homage to Antwerp, the Belgian import/export capital of the 16th century.

tifacts. On the contrary, we wanted to find a contemporary interpretation of age-old patterns. The important thing is to use your own reference points rather than to fake being something you aren’t.” Nicole went on to explain that they were also collaborating with Under the Acacia, an organization to better the lives of those beyond the reach of NGO’s in a sustainable way.

Nicole excitedly continues, “There were amazing migration stories. One young Russian woman made the crossing to New York all on her own with four children. That kind of courage… I suddenly realized that most Americans were descendants of the courageous few – the exceptions – those that left everything behind, clamoring for the unknown. It’s little wonder that the entrepreneurial spirit is within us.” With two young children of her own, a career in full-throttle and an art form that demands constant reinvention, Nicole inhabits the New York of our forefathers, the mythical city of opportunities where parallel lifestyles and multiple realities miraculously coexist. Like the city itself, the Hanley Mellon brand is the ultimate juxtaposition: it is a place to dream a future, explore the present and reinvest our lives with the heirlooms of our past. In the words of Nicole, “lifestyle has always been ‘life’ before ‘style.’” For more information: hanleymellon.com

O

ne day all this will be yours’ begins the hackneyed phrase. As for what ordinarily follows: ‘A tract of land,’ ‘a house,’ or ‘a list of inconsequential chattel.’ What we don’t expect is a gun used by Bonnie and Clyde, an amusement park, a valley’s worth of dolls; that is unless we’re watching Fox Business Network’s new smash hit Strange Inheritance - a show that not only manages to live up to its name, but has itself been bequeathed the most invaluable and surprising treasure in the form of a polished and perspicacious show host, Jamie Colby. With remarkable acumen in both legal and business matters, Colby is a hybrid talent whose areas of expertise beg the same question her show asks: How did one person come into possession of such distinct gifts? In her case, the question could be reformulated to: How has a TV news anchor acquired an extensive understanding of everything from disposition law to financing given the highly competitive and focused mindset that success in television often demands? To further complicate the anomaly, ‘Enter the seemingly insouciant blonde who – unlike the rest of the city – appears approachable, interested and well rested.’

Never the Meek

With a benevolent smile, Jamie dismisses my comment about her having been a child genius (attending University at 14 and getting her JD by 22) insisting instead, “Precocious maybe, but primarily it’s about my philosophy which has always been: to remain unafraid. That’s what allowed/allows me to try new things. I didn’t start out with ‘Hey, I wanna be on TV.’ I studied to be a doctor then switched to accounting. Since I was too young to take my CPA exam I did a couple of years at law school. When I graduated I decided to work in the entertainment industry so I sent thousands of resumes to LA & NY. I was applying in some office when ‘Bombastic Bushkin’ (Henry Bushkin, lawyer to Johnny Carson and Joan Rivers) entered. ‘Hey kid what are you doing here,’ he asked. Since I didn’t know enough to be intimidated I said, ‘I’m looking for work… you got anything for me?’ He told me come back the next day… and I said ‘how’s 11?’ Looking back, Bushkin was probably just being polite. But to his surprise I was there the next day at 11; and next thing I know, I’m in.”

Never one to be meek, Jamie was just out of law school when she inherited a battery of exciting projects and got to meet everyone from Joan Rivers to John Travolta. Since Johnny Carson regarded her as a wiz kid, he took her under his wings. “My ears were always opened,” Jamie explains, “10 years of law, many varied projects; I learned how to have everyone who left the negotiating table feel like a winner. It’s the same ‘thinking on the go’ knowhow you need in a breaking news situation. You prep yourself zipping through 100’s of pages. Then you go on the air with just 2 words. Like I did with: Ford Died. On the spot, I had to explain all of America the significance of President Ford’s life and legacy.”

“That I can do”

When her grandmother had cancer, Jamie met her surgeon. “He was tremendously kind,” she admits, “We fell in love. He was going to be Chief of Surgery at St. Vincent’s in the Village and he talked me into moving to New York with him. He was much older… Getting married, changing jobs all in the same week. Not recommended.” Though born and raised in Forest Hills, Queens, Jamie no longer had any family members in New York. With a mandatory 6-month waiting period as stipulated by the NY Bar Association, she was balked from practicing law locally. When a friend of hers - an agent - asked her to fill in for a client on maternity leave at NBC, Jamie - in true Chorus Line manner - leapt at the opportunity: “Teleprompter…?” - ‘That I can do.’ “Report on legal and business issues?” - ‘I can do that.’ “Again, I was unafraid despite being like a deer in the headlights with my French braids. Nevertheless, just two days after I started, I was sure that TV afforded me the opportunity to help a much larger number of people than I could with pro bono community service.” After her brief stint at NBC was up, Jamie headed to a station on Long Island (WLNY, Channel 55) where - because of her background as a gourmet chef - she was asked to do a cooking show relating to quick meals and the regular working family. Again, without hesitating, Jamie jumped in. As she says, “I shot, I edited, I wrote and I did 3 news packages a day. Once promoted, I got to anchor the 11 o’clock broadcast – at 50 dollars a day!” “About two years in, the station owner says ‘a friend’s child is desperate for a kidney.’ And everyone at the station is like ‘oh, wow, we just did your other friend’s grocery store opening etc.,’ but I said: why not? So I did the story. The kidney comes through. Suddenly, an executive producer from Extra calls, saying ‘I saw your piece and would you like to be a national correspondent. ‘

Quantum Leaps

From WLNY, Jamie literally leapfrogged to WCBS prior to moving on to CNN. Then, on a beautiful morning in 2001, while reporting on a mayoral primary, Jamie heard the first plane hit the Twin Towers. “So we switch immediately to a different kind of story, interviewing a man who works for Boeing, but happens to have been at the Hilton Millennial Hotel’s 50th floor when... Well, I ended up talking to a lot of survivors that year.” Just two years after winning the Gracie Allen Award (2000) for investigative reporting, Jamie won the coveted Edward R. Murrow award in for her coverage of 9/11 – a fact that Jamie forgets to mention. Jamie appears distracted. “Yeah, I was traumatized,” she confides. “There were some people who talked about it later like it was a film;” there is an unprecedented vulnerability to her delivery. “I mean one woman said, ‘Oh yeah, I saw that 9/11 thing on TV but I didn’t know anyone in the buildings,’” she breaks off.

guns and cars and… kids watch and learn about baseball card collecting and different things.” Enthralled by New York, Jamie admits to being ever more capable of enjoying the nuances on offer. “The old Jamie didn’t take a breath till she got home at night. Like most locals, I ran about frantically without time to consciously experience. The new Jamie is way more Zen. I see the smiling faces, I take in the streets, I appre-

ciate the museums, the parks, the restaurants, the theaters, I experience all that is New York including being able to stay in all day and order anything and everything up.” Forever undaunted, Jamie is truly media’s child – one whose sheer gumption has led her from behind the camera to in front of it, and one whose already prodigious repertoire continues to grow. Jamie is living proof that it is not the meek who shall inherit this world’s strange wonder.

After a slight pause, Jamie resumes, “I just kept learning. Then a FOX News executive calls me in 2002… First I think it’s my brother who’s playing a practical joke on me again… but no, Fox likes my stuff. Anyway, CNN was really nice about it when I told them the position I was being offered. They threw me a farewell party and.. well, that was 12 years ago. “

The Inheritance

“Fox gave me a front seat into history. I covered a lot of things. Military things. People needed to know why our troops had to go protect us. What it’s like for them when they get back. Post-traumatic stress. The works. I got personally involved. In the past it was with helping homeless women; since 9/11 it was with helping our returning patriots. Coming to terms with the war, cleaning their credits, going to rehab and getting their lives in order. They’ve been through so much for us.” Besides her charity related projects, Jamie is renowned for mentoring others, believing it’s an obligation to pass on what you know. When the concept for Strange Inheritance came along both she and the network saw the show as a perfect fit for her. Jamie had the interdisciplinary background to make it work. Legally aware of what it meant to accumulate wealth, she could grasp how disposition was governed. “These were tremendous stories,” explains Jamie, “These people are real characters… Our team scouts the best stories by way of folklore, word of mouth.” Debuting with the highest ratings ever for the net, the show is loved for many reasons. As Jamie concludes, “Women love it because its about families and characters. Men because of

Golfing meets gastronomic pleasure at The Phoenician Resort By Norah Bradford

he Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona today has its roots in a late 1980s venture by Charles Keating, whose vision was to create a luxury resort at the base of Camelback Mountain, l a site that was originally home to one of the first hotels in the area, constructed in the early 1900s. The resort has won numerous awards and in particular high esteem is held for the golf operations, which has been ranked amongst the “Top 75 Golf Resorts in America” by Golf Digest publication. In addition, the Phoenician Golf courses have been named “North America’s Leading Golf Resort” by the World Travel Awards. The 27-hole Championship golf facilities comprise three, 9-hole courses created by course designers Ted Robinson, Sr. and Arthur Jack Snyder (later reworked by Homer Flint), and managed by Troon Golf. Designer Ted Robinson, Sr.’s work can be evidenced most clearly as the famed “King of waterscapes” in some of the hole designs on the Oasis course. The Canyon course has players traverse

about, Callaway rental club availability and 27,000 square feet of practice area. However all this golf can work up an appetite for which Relish Burger Bistro is well placed to serve. A dining destination in its own right, the bistro offers classic American fare with one of the largest collections of Tequila in Arizona. The menu includes a variety of no less than twelve signature gourmet burgers, all also offering a “Knife & Fork” bun-less option, complemented by select garnishes. Try for example, the Cowboy Burger, with grilled Kobe beef, fried onion rings, bacon rashers, jalapeños, sharp cheddar cheese and house-made steak sauce; or the Classic “You-Build-It” Kobe Burger, with a choice of two toppings, from fried egg to chili verde. All this golfing activity coupled with the gastronomic delights of dining makes the next logical step booking a stay to enjoy a respite from the east coast weather. The Key to Happiness L

ocated in the Florida Keys, Little Palm Island Resort and Spa is a 5.5-acre island resort, so exclusive that it’s only accessible by boat or seaplane. For those seeking complete privacy, not tourist attractions, this island retreat is perfect for the digital detox getaway; cellphones are not permitted in pubic areas and there are no in-room TVs. Upon arriving to this tiny slice of paradise, via a motor yacht that transfers you from the check-in on Torch Key, a welcome cocktail awaits along with smiling faces. Immediately you’ll feel at home here and as you walk along the pathways lined in seashells while taking in the sights and sounds of Little Palm Island. You might even encounter a Key Deer (only found in the Florida Keys) that roam the island and, at times, act like one of the guests, as they seem to make themselves at home by the pool. There are individual oceanfront villas with sundecks, private hot tubs, outdoor showers…all offering picturesque views of the ocean. In the center of the island is the pool surrounded by beautiful, lush vegetation; fountains, lounge chairs, and a tropical Tiki bar. There are non-motorized water sports such as kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Private bungalows and suites

at Little Palm range from classic Floridian décor to very opulent and luxurious furnishing. The resort’s Island Escape Suite features 550 square feet of tropical living with a private deck and gorgeous ocean views, as well as an outdoor shower surrounded by bamboo. Most bathrooms are equipped with a hot tub and all with indoor showers. Interiors feature traditional West Indies touches blended with true island design. Striking vaulted ceilings rise to thatched roofs. A substantial king size bed with signature Noble House bedding is separate from the living area. Suites are equipped with mini-bars and a coffee display while the Bungalows are air-conditioned, and are all non-smoking. The Spa provides all the luxurious amenities

you would expect from an island resort; facials, ritual bath experiences, massages and a fitness center. Activities range from deepsea fishing and scuba diving to sailing and kite board lessons. The resort offers boating excursions to Key West for guests who wish to experience the lively entertainment and nightlife on Duval Street, but most travelers who venture to Little Palm Island do so for the privacy and exclusion and don’t venture off the island except for the occasional dive or snorkel trip. All meals are served in “The Dining Room,” a fine-dining restaurant, and the only one on the property. The resort, however, also offers in-room dining as well as private dining on the beach. Dress on the Island is casual, however when in The Dining Room, gentlemen are asked to wear a collared shirt and swimsuits are not allowed. The island is located about one hour by air from Miami and Key West. Seaplanes will pickup guests just about anywhere in the state of Florida and transfer them over to the resort. You can also opt to drive to Little Torch Key, and hop on the resort’s yacht over to Little Palm Key. As the saying goes “getting there is half the adventure,” and this resort certainly fits the bill. For more information: littlepalmisland.com

Corinthia’s Cornucopia A

new world was about to begin as a millennium came to a close. A dareto-dream generation of young cosmopolitans anticipated great change. Having been born into relatively multicultural societies – ones wherein paradigm shifts in both science and lifestyle were occurring on a near daily basis – many hankered for sociopolitical reform. It was assumed that an all out artistic renaissance awaited society; while enormous cultural changes were just around the corner. Of course, ‘the corner’ being alluded to in this case was not the year 2000 but 1898; likewise, the Millennials in question are not Generation Y but the former residents of the great city of Budapest who eagerly anticipated the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian nation. As a recent member of the formidable Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary’s capital was set to host the most mas-

sive expo ever seen – one slated to include the first electrified underground metro on the entire European Continent, dazzling technological wonders, hitherto unseen illuminated fountains, a newly constructed bridge, two major museums – one for applied arts, the other a majestic Hall for fine Art – as well as

the first large scaled luxury hotel on the most impressive avenue of the inner city. Located on the ever-burgeoning Grand Boulevard, the Grand Hotel Royal boasted its very own post office, bank, hairdresser, ticket office, two highly distinct gourmet restaurants, a café, confectionary and private dining rooms. As over 5,800,000 people flocked to Budapest to attend the millennial celebrations, the posh hotel that today goes under the moniker of Corinthia Hotel Budapest became an instant hit with both the international cognoscenti as well as the local gentry and royals. By 1903, guests of the hotel were given direct access to one of Budapest’s most opulent spas. Christened nearly a full decade before the hotel was established, this hidden gem of lattice-like inlays embellished in gold evoked the monarchy in both tone and

exclusivity. With a majestic blue swimming pool coursing through the hidden chamber like an artery, and Jacuzzis, steam baths, saunas and treatment rooms punctuating each corner, the Spa is a brilliant addition to the cornucopia of comfort that is Corinthia. The renowned 5 star luxury hotel - recipient of the World Travel Award, Condé Nast award, the Traveler’s choice award for Top Hotel and Romance category - is far more than a sentimental paean to a lost era. Beyond her French Renaissance façade, the Belle Époque masterpiece elicits a singular sensibility - one born of an unapologetic time where shameless ambition, flamboyance and sheer hopefulness reigned. It was a generation that stared through the future’s window and saw a 1900 unfettered by illness, oppression and want. Theirs was a zeitgeist that could never have imagined the destruction that two world wars would soon engender. Although the more recent multimillion-dollar restoration revives the past with recherché furnishings, fine tapestries, rich décor, and ornate asides, it is the hotel’s approach to lifestyle and ambience that resuscitates

the grandeur of the prewar era. Sipping an ever expanding range of Hungarian sparkling wines, I was amazed by just how finely developed regional vineyards there were when compared to even the finest in authentic Champagnes. More than that, there was a level of generosity I felt surpassed all luxury counterparts world over. It was almost as if success hinged upon patrons being able to lose themselves in hedonistic rapture. Such lack of consideration to time and expense was especially rare in a venue where there were no incurred costs beyond the stay.

At Corinthia’s executive lounge not only did the wine flow freely at all hours of the day but the insouciance was contagious. Light lunches, gourmet tidbits, canapés, and tapas-like specialties… all freely available whenever the fancy should strike. With wines, beers, aged whiskeys, cognacs, liquors and even cocktails all on the house, the Corinthia feels less like a hotel than a stay at your very own palace. Reinterpreting Art Nouveau within a contemporary context, the suites and rooms eschew faux historicity in favor of emotional accuracy. After all, those who first stayed at the hotel in the early 1900’s were not embarking upon a nostalgic trip down ‘national memory lane’, but taking the most lavish and contemporary vacation of their lives. With state-of-the-art amenities, newly implanted timber floors and mirrored walls, 24-inch LCD, personalized temperature control, heated bathroom floors, massage level showers and baths, a Nespresso coffee maker in each room as well as custom designed trappings with expansive beds and emotive lighting, each spacious suite is a portal into a parallel universe. As a timeless centerpiece to

the bustling city that surrounds her, Corinthia has played host to generations of geniuses. From Bela Bartok to Josefin Baker to Ella Fitzgerald, Jehudi Menuhin and Andrew Lloyd Weber… many greats have traversed her palatial courtyard. While more recent guests included Sean Connery, Isabella Rossellini, Catherine Deneuve, and Jose Carreras, it is not hard to imagine just how much this property influenced those like Wes Anderson whose film Grand Budapest Hotel overtly mimicked Corinthia’s chocolate box aesthetics. The hotel’s historical ties with film dated back to the very inception of cinema. Shortly after presenting their invention in Paris, it was here that the Lumière brothers screened their work to a foreign audience for the first time. Years later, the hotel would convert an area of the ballroom into the Apollo theater (in later Soviet times, Red Star Theater) – one of the most important film houses in a country whose commitment to cinema furnished Hollywood with everything from studio executives to academy awarded directors, cinematographers and actors.

By way of illustrating Corinthia’s regal past, imagine a hotel whose history includes a Poet in Residence. That the nationally celebrated Ady Endre lived in Corinthia for months on end, free of charge, is a testament to the values of this institution. In an attempt to keep such tradition in tact, the Corinthia has Royal Residencies for longterm guests who desire fully equipped kitchens and homelike conveniences. Walking through the Grand Ballroom with its Italian limestone, Spanish marble, South African carpets and Slovakian

furniture, one is quickly reminded that Hungary had once been an expansive kingdom whose bounty flowed into its capital. Sitting under the transparent soaring ceilings of the Atrium, I indulge in a final champagne breakfast. With fine cheeses, fruits, smoked fishes and warm dishes around me, I realize the poet Ady was right after all: “We are never on time with success, our dreams, our heaven, our embrace. We are the men who are always late”. Perhaps the twentieth century – the one imagined by those living in 1896 – would only now be arriving. Late…? Certainly; but, at least, it would arrive with all its grandeur and glory in tact… It would arrive as we had initially dreamt it: warm, ambitious, and – like Corinthia - with its head forever in the clouds. Corinthia was the true Millennial – the one born hundreds of years too soon. For more information: corinthia.com

DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS DEAD SEA RESORTS By Janis Turk S educing travelers with tingling waters and salt-encrusted cliffs like clear rock candy, the Dead Sea has long beckoned vagabonds, Bedouins, Crusaders and kings— and even mere Everyman travelers like me.

Along the highway that cuts through the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea emerges as a welcome mirage—a cerulean oasis in a brittle, parchment-paper-colored wilderness. Bordered by the bleak desert mountains and pale valleys of Palestine, Israel and Jordan, the world’s deepest hypersaline lake is legendary in size and story. Lying 430 meters below sea level, and reaching a depth of 701 meters, the “Salt Sea” rests close to the ancient cities of Jerusalem and Amman and not far from the lost horizon of legendary Petra and wind-swept Arabian Deserts. For happy wanderers like me, the Dead Sea’s allure is not just the sweet sting of salt on my skin or some sexy sunbathing scene; and it’s not the water’s oft-lauded health and beauty benefits, either.

118 • Resident March 2015

Rather it is the tony resort hotels that spoon its salty banks and its close proximity to the ancient treasures of art, history and culture that lures me to the lowest place on the planet.

Float Like a Butterfly

The Dead Sea contains the highest salt concentration of any other body of water, so swimmers float effortlessly in a seated or standing position, enabling them to read a newspaper without getting it wet. That makes a fun In-

stagram photo, but even more fun are the posh pool and spa areas of the local resorts on both the Jordanian and the Israeli sides. With lush gardens, tented cabanas and posh outdoor lounge spaces, infinity-edge pools that blend into the blue horizon, outdoor fire pits, intimate spa tubs under the stars, private beaches and shady al fresco dining spots, hotels at the Dead Sea are luxurious retreats. For the first day or two I explore the resorts, but after enjoying a Dead Sea mud scrub and a dip in the salty waters, I feel relaxed, prune-like and pretty—ready to explore the secrets of Jordan and Israel beyond these briny banks. I like to think of the Dead Sea as my own discovery, but of course it’s been a spa playground for kings and commoners since the beginning of time. Even Hollywood royalty Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have stayed here.

Biblical proportions

In Old Testament days, King David hid from his enemies in caves near the Dead Sea. More than 900 years later,

King Herod the Great built a palace and fortress overlooking the western shore on Mount Masada. Today the ruins of Herod’s reign are not only a popular tourist attraction with a museum at its base and cable car to the top, but such vestiges of history also the setting for a 7,5000-stadium seat amphitheater where the Israeli Opera Festival hosts performances each summer. Next year’s festival (June 2015) toasts “Tosca” and “Carmina Burana.” With Masada as a dramatic backdrop, it’s as though the ghosts of two millenniums join in a spectral chorus. Twice weekly, April through October, the amphitheater also offers a nighttime light show that brings to life the history of Masada. Ninety miles from Masada, the ancient walled city of Jerusalem sprawls, a marketplace of myriad wonders—its gilded Dome of the Rock gleaming in the sun and stone streets teaming with rivalling cultures, histories and commerce. There, on summer evenings, the story of Jerusalem also unfolds in a colossal sound and light multi-media “Night Spectacular” at the Citadel at the Tower of David.

illuminated by 1,500 candles on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays nights each summer—and it’s just as spectacular by day. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, Petra, is one of the world’s most famous historic archeological sites, an architecturally astounding city of towering edifices hewn into cliffs. Dating early as 312 BCE, today it is Jordan’s most-visited tourist attraction and rates among the top 7 Man-Made Wonders-of-theWorld.

Caravan

South of Petra, the Wadi Rum area was the setting of the adventures of T. E. “Lawrence of Arabia” and is still home Bedouin encamp-

ments where travelers can ride camels and sleep in tents. Set far off road on the way to the Red Sea city of Aqaba is the Feynan Eco Lodge, an idyllic “green” candle-lit lodge resting in the antediluvian deserts of the Wadi Feynan valley. About a 45-minute drive from the Dead Sea resorts, travelers also enjoy the Evason Ma’in Hot Springs resort: an oasis of waterfalls and steaming hot springs. Ancient Roman ruins litter the yellow-flower-dotted fields of Jeresh near Amman. Throughout the region, shops, galleries, churches and museums showcase the intricate mosaics and colorful hand-thrown pottery of local artisans.

Drop-Dead Sea Beauty

With the Arabian nights magic of moon-scape-like deserts, it’s no wonder travelers love this area. Yes, the hot, shadows-less lands surrounding the Dead Sea have the savage beauty of a big chalky gravel pit; but, in their midst, raw splendor emerges. There, sapphire waters glisten like a gemstone found half-buried in the sand—a reminder that, even in lowly places, something astonishing may appear.

Charming nearby city streets, palaces and squares, all built in grey limestone from the adjacent mountains set the stage for this five-story, terracotta roof hotel. Sophisticated yet stylish, the Regent artfully preserves the historic character and best of the past with that of modernity. Designed to reflect the area’s rich history and culture, the Regent successfully draws inspiration from the Venetian Renaissance Masters and the local architecture. Kempinski’s Crowning Touch O

verwhelmed, blown away, smitten:’ each an ordinary superlative and each - just as verily - implying a form of marvelous defeat. Whether overcome by an awesome spectacle, captivated by a seductive melody, knocked out by a ‘breathtaking’ meal or held in the throes of a rapture that ends in la petite mort, the recurring theme is one of ecstasy by way of submission. Historically speaking, this makes sense. After all, countries such as Hungary had been occupied many times over and each time around, they benefitted culturally. Celts, Mongols, Romans, Ottoman Turks, the Hapsburg Empire… they all had invaded her lands. In return, Hungary inherited: bathhouses, viticulture, Viennese pastry, spires, and a host of influences that catalyzed dynamic changes in music and cuisine. While the hordes that had once conquered the Magyars have disappeared into the annals of history, the Hungarians have managed to retain cultural elements from each. ‘Pity the victor for it is the vanquished that has inher-

ited the best of both worlds:’ It is the art of incorporation, juxtaposition and adaptation that is responsible for Budapest’s most auspicious creations. Nowhere is this ability to both maximize as well as harmonize conflicting traditions more evident than in the luxurious Kempinski Hotel, Corvinus. Entering Budapest’s Kempinski Hotel is like walking onto a lavish proscenium created for a György Ligeti opera. Though historical ref-

erences to the Belle Époque are inherent in the composition, the overall theme elicits a parallel universe – one wherein things have a natural tendency to fall upwards. With soaring ceilings reaching for the sky, stately brown stone rising against a glimmering Crystalux wall, an expansive ascending metal balustrade, and columns like ovoid shells stretching towards some unseen gravitational center overhead, the sensibility is one of Art Nouveau-meets-contemporary weightlessness. This idea of elegant ascension is translated into everything from design to cuisine. Ensconced within the city’s most exclusive fashion and gastronomy oriented district, the Kempinski is a bastion for several colliding realms: Váci Utca’s elegant ChampsÉlysées-like promenade, the panoramic strand running alongside the Danube with its view of castle-topped hills, the bustling Bohemian Jewish Quarter and the Neo-Gothic realm of the parliament and its surrounding area. Highlighting this decadent dualism, the hotel’s ground floor restaurant named, ap-

propriately enough, És Bisztró – És meaning ‘and’ or ‘as well as.’ Judging from the endless battery of sumptuous choices, it‘s clear that the French inspired brasserie lives up to its moniker. Its cuisine is both Hungarian and Viennese; the ingredients local, the approach international; the milieu casual, the variety resplendent; the service personal, the mood haunting. In short, the brasserie-cum-bistropub-wine bar is Austro-Hungarian tradition presented in the form of a 21st century remix. It is a venue perfectly up to the task of hosting the hotel’s complimentary breakfasts – a place where both discerning locals and savvy hotel guests can be equally astonished. Helmed by former BMX champion Norbert Körösi, És is a balancing act between showmanship and content, reasonable pricing and high standards, down-to-earth fare and razzle dazzle. Of course, dazzle is something the hotel has mastered on many levels. With the finest corporate collection of Modern Hungarian art anywhere, it’s easy to get lost among the glass mosaics and fine fabrics. The hotel is a world of beige offset by turquoise and punctuated in silver. Each room and suite is adorned in New Empire style and includes all the state-ofthe-art amenities of a Five Star Hotel. With spacious rooms, king sized beds, individually controlled air-conditioning, LCD TV’s, DVD players and

large bathrooms with heated floors, separate bathtubs and showers, Kempinski makes it easy to look out over the city’s fairytale landscape and feel as if all of it had been written especially for you.

only Nobu restaurant in all of Central Europe. With 326 rooms and 33 suites, it makes sense that Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa shoes Kempinski as the perfect place in which to expand his dynasty.

From the spectacular view it’s on to the fitness club - with its fully equipped elliptical trainers, treadmills, recumbent bikes and cutting edge machines – before winding down at the Spa. Whether its bubble baths, steam baths, Finnish saunas or specialized massages and Elemental Herbology treatments you’re looking for, Kempinski won’t disappoint.

With theme suites that include everything from Herend porcelain to Queen Erzsébet, the hotel is a journey through Hungary’s past as much as it is a symbol of its ambitious future. Though it’s rare to take special positive notice of staff at a massive hotel, Kempinski’s crew was yet another example of ‘És:’ attentive and inconspicuous, convivial and unobtrusive. They were as ready to entertain with a humorous anecdote as leave you to your own devices. In short, they possessed all the charm of the city itself. Overwhelmed, blown away… call it what you will. Staying at Kempinski allows one to inherit several centuries’ worth of tradition with all the ease of a monarch and all the pageantry of a coronation.

Although the entire neighborhood is crawling with some of the best restaurants imaginable, it is Budapest’s Kempinski which boasts the

the years, and one that many look forward to attending. Each year wine and beer enthusiasts, along with food fanatics gather to cel-

ebrate in selecting from over 1,000 brands and enjoy tastings, as well as sample featured dishes from highly rated restaurants and this year was no different. There’s a package offered called “Grain and Grape,” which comprises of multiple perks including tickets to Friday night’s Bourbon event and Saturday’s Grand Tasting. Last month, guests flocked to snowy Connecticut to take part in the festive weekend. Activities kicked off at 6 p.m. with Friday night’s Bourbon event at the Convention Center and Uncas Ballroom. Attendees were presented a variety of fine bourbons from Jim Beam to couple with gourmet selections. Cigars were available at Cigar of the Gods, and were to be enjoyed in the designated smoking space. Spin Street

sold cookbooks written by Sun Winefest’s celebrity chefs and hosted various book signings throughout the weekend. Saturday’s Winefest Grand Tasting was a sold out occasion. Situated on the Main Culinary Stage, celebrity chefs set up cooking demonstrations for their audience. Featured chefs included second season winner of The Next Iron Chef, Jose Garces, Todd English of television cooking show Food Trip with Todd English, Michele Ragussis, who prepared a scallop, corn, and prosciutto dish, Bar Rescue’s Brian Duffy, Chris Coombs of dbar in Boston, and winner of Food Network’s Extreme Chefs Terry French. The Elite Cru Tasting took place next, with two different sessions, one from noon tvo 2:00 p.m. and the other from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This tasting was designed for Sun Winefest attendees to discover the “best-of-the-best vintages” and to meet the winemakers behind them. Presented in the cozy setting of the Cabaret Theatre, the Elite Cru Tasting also highlighted a raw bar hosted by Georges Bank presenting their South Bay Blonde

Oysters, shrimp from Mazzetta Company, an appetizer from Vermont Creamery and specialty cheeses from igourmet.com. To guests, igourmet.com gifted $50 certificates for their website. The prime event happened from 8:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. Celebrity Chef Dine Around featured celebrity chefs preparing their best dishes at cooking stations. Guests were encouraged to watch, sample food, and pair each dish with

a premium wine or beer. Sunday’s activities concluded the food-andbooze-filled weekend with a final Sun Winefest Grand Tasting. Mirroring Saturday’s event of the same name, guests were offered to sample over 1,000 wines and beer. Celebrity chefs presented demonstrations. Featured chefs included Betty Fraser of Top Chef: Los Angeles and Manouschka Guerrier of Private Chefs of Beverly Hills, Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell’s Kevin Des Chenes, Georges Mokbel who penned the book Everyday to Gourmet, owner of Catalyst Restaurant in Michigan William Kovel, and Sandy Squillante. Overall, the 12th annual Sun WineFest was a tremendous success and Mohegan Sun served as a scenic backdrop to such a phenomenal occasion. Make sure to schedule this event into your social calendars for January 2016. For more information: mohegansun.com

Artisanal Fromagerie Bistro & Wine Bar under New Ownership By W. A. Muller eteran Restauranteur Sarid Drory breathes new life into legendary restaurant with plans to introduce new menu items, online cheese store, and sidewalk café Renowned French bistro and wine bar Artisanal Fromagerie – located on Park Avenue in Murray Hill - is now under the direction of veteran restauranteur Sarid Drory, one of the original owners of The Waverly Inn and The Cub Room. He has unveiled plans to take the restaurant in a more upscale direction, with an expanded wine and cheese list, a chef’s table in a private room named “The Cheese Cave” and exciting new menu items such as a Fondue Burger with Artisanal’s famous three-cheese fondue. For over 14 years, Artisanal Fromagerie has served up playful twists to classic French brasserie dishes, with a particular emphasis an outstanding array of artisanal cheese and wine. “We are excited to build off Artisanal’s excellent reputation and head into a new exciting phase,” says Drory, who took over previous owner Terrance Brennan six months ago. “Our regular customers will be pleased to know we aren’t touching menu favorites like our signature French onion soup, beef tartare which is considered one of the best in New York City, and our macaroni and cheese which was featured as Time Out’s Best, but they will see some amazing new

menu additions and new creative cocktails.” The new 12oz Artisanal House Beef Fondue Burger served with Artisanal fondue and specialty sauce is melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the Lobster Roll with butter brioche, fresh leaves and fries is a welcome addition to the lunch and brunch menu which features five types of fish, five types of burgers, seven types of macaroni and cheese and four sandwiches. The Dover Sole Meuniere with crushed fingerling potatoes and spinach, which was previously only available as a special on Wednesday’s, has now become a menu fixture. These new additions join a host of masterful bistro classics and a daily ‘plat du jour’. Artisanal’s highly-skilled mixologist Carlos de Vazquez, who uses a large range of creative seasonal ingredients that supplement the menu, says one of the most popular new cocktails is the Raspberry Mint Julep, which has bourbon

whiskey, fresh raspberry juice, Amaro Ramazzotti, mint and freshly squeezed lime juice. Since taking the helm, Sarid Drory has expanded Artisanal’s already-generous wine list, which now boasts 600 bottles and 80 wines by the glass, as well as the bar menu which now includes 79 high-end scotches, 50 tequilas, 75 vodkas, 45 bourbons, 45 gins, and six sakes to pair with a variety of cheeses. Artisanal’s knowledgeable staff and head fromager, Charles Mahal, can point out perfect wine pairing for one of the 250 soft and hard artisanal cheeses on offer. A chef’s table in the walk-in “cheese cave”, a temperature and humiditycontrolled room where a number of the world’s finest artisanally-made cheeses are aged to optimum ripeness and peak flavor, seats eight people for an exclusive six course tasting menu. Drory says there will soon be a separate late night menu added and live jazz music every Sunday during brunch. He says interior renovations under the direction of original architect Adam Tihany, will revamp the expansive 160-seat restaurant ahead of a grand reopening in September, 2015. Midtown West’s Newest Sexy & Sophisticated Upscale Bar & Eatery By W. A. Muller uniper is the latest upscale bar and eatery to descend upon New York’s Midtown West. Located at 237 West 35th Street, Juniper is a multi-leveled restaurant, bar and entertainment space from New York restauranteur Tom Murphy. Home to an expansive main level bar area, intimate 30-seat dining area, and classy event room, Juniper Bar is perfectly configured to become the hottest new neighborhood local. Just steps away from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, Juniper is a fun and lively setting for casual small bites, post-work catchups, or delicious pre-theater dinners. Stepping inside this newly minted establishment, with its vibrant, rusticelegant décor, you know you have arrived at a very special destination.

Named after a bright blue berry, which is known for its piney flavor and use in flavoring gin, Juniper has a stylish color palate of teals, greys, and bursts of orange. Large, custom-designed lamps hang from the hand-painted patterned ceiling, adding texture and decoration to the room, and beams made from reclaimed wood bring an earthy vibe to the space. Approachable and decidedly unpretentious, the hive of activity at Juniper can be seen through large front windows which draws in passersby’s and will become alfresco from spring. All-day light spills over the attractive front space, with vintage hightop bar stools and small tables provide for casual dining. The main bar area, featuring a deluxe 48ft stone “smart bar” with USB charging stations for cell phones and tablets, is situated beside a dancefloor and elevated DJ booth, which leads through to a 30-seat dining room lending itself to a more intimate environment. With large TV screens providing unobstructed views, Juniper is a sophisticated place to gamewatch with friends. Downstairs, Juniper’s chic entertainment space offers the option to fully customize both food and beverage packages to ensure guests are presented with a unique and exciting event. The space has been cleverly designed with black banquettes, mirrors reflecting marble top

cocktail tables and white chandeliers, giving it a low-key, sexy lounge vibe. Juniper boasts a generous menu of delicious wraps, sandwiches and gourmet burgers that go perfectly with one of their numerous draft and bottle beer offerings or a selection from their wine bar. The Lobster Club with thin cut Applewood smoked bacon and lemon aioli is quite simply delectable, and the Burger Menu features specialties like the spicy Fire Breathing Burger and the Thai Style with avocado, papaya, watercress, spicy chili glaze, and goat cheese ginger mayo. Other items on the menu are Mexicanmeets-Bistro, tapas style appetizers. You’ll find fresh Maine Lobster Tacos, Cheese Steak Spring Rolls with aged provolone, and for the more health conscious there are lighter options including Edamame Hummus or Kale Artichoke Dip served with oregano pita chips. On the Entrée list you’ll find supremely well-executed classics such as the Filet of Salmon wrapped with thin cut potatoes, wood sorrel, and balsamic gastrique, or Bourbon Steak with 14 oz N.Y. Strip, sweet potato mash and bourbon jus. Juniper Bar 237 West 35th Street New York, NY 10001 212.967.2511 juniperbarnyc.com

East Meets West in the Village W

hile the concept of the Japanese Izakaya seems to be the latest trend in the culinary front, Bara is the middle ground between East and West combining the creativity and casualness of a Japanese Izakaya with the romantic flair of a Parisian wine bar. As New York City is known as the world’s greatest melting pot, Bara is a prime example of the success of fusing the best of multiple cultures. Housed in a gem of a space, the ambient lighting offers a cozy hue against the exposed brick walls and open air bar. Executive Chef and native New Yorker Ian Alvarez has had a multi sensorial and multi cultural culinary experience spending time in the kitchen at Spuntino, Momofuku, and French Louie where all of his experiences are culminated at Bara with an inventive and creative flair to favorite dishes. Start with the mackerel tataki, lightly dressed napa cabbage salad, sweet crab chawanmushi or steamed manila clams in enoki broth. Specialties of the house include the grilled flat iron steak with bok choy and bara Worcestershire,

tea smoked duck breast, juicy fried chicken with 3 sauces, roasted black bass with garlic ginger tare and spicy cucumbers, and buckwheat noodle with oxtail and prawn. Exotic libations span the best of both worlds with a creative bespoke cocktail program that

are as potent as they are delicious. A perfect after dinner drink is the Astrid’s Cup with bourbon, coffee, chai spice and lemon. An Asian twist on the margarita is the Koji with mezcal, sake, honey, lemon , and ginger. A creamy dark and stormy rendition is the Santiago with light and dark rum, lime, jaggery, rice milk, and angostura. And an Asian version of a Long Island Iced tea is the ‘knock your socks off’ Kuro Mart with black sesame vodka, shochu, and elixir combier. As a wine bar they offer an array of well curated wines and sparkling Normandy ciders that are predominantly French based with a few Austrian and Italian selections. Equally as impressive is their extensive sake selection that really embodies the fusion between France and Japanese cultures. Bara Restaurant 58 East 1st Street NY, NY 10003 917.639.3197

Healthful Intentions...Great Taste! N

estled on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Downing Street in West Village, Café Clover specializes in delicious, healthoriented meals with affordable prices. A creation from the minds of partners David Rabin, previously of The Lambs Club, Kyle Hotchkiss Carone, and executive chef David Standridge, this state of the art café opened its doors last month and has become quite a hit amongst the New York dining circuit. Café Clover is a 70-seat restaurant with a spacious, triangular dining room. Described as casual elegance, this West Village café was designed by Steven Gambrel with a whiteand-blue color scheme. Using plaster casts from artists’ works, such as Alberto Giacometti and Max Ernst, created light fixtures to contrast antique mirrors lining the walls. The health-inspired menu is a combined effort between Standridge and consultant Mike Roussell, PhD and Director of Nutrition at Peak Performance. Roussell provided insight into crafting Standridge’s usual heavy dinners into lighter portioned options that still capture the appetizing taste that diners desire. With their expertise, Standridge and Roussell unfold a menu that satisfies cravings in

a healthy manner. One such example of the changes made to typical restaurant dishes, is the use of coconut oil in place of butter in the roast Nova Scotia lobster meal. This minor difference highlights delightful flavor without the unnecessary extra calories. Several notable appetizers include a sweet gem wedge with chia seeds, shaved roots and fine herbs, the Octopus a la Plancha with cauliflower, new potatoes and chili, and the Market Crudité bowl with green goddess, smoked vinegar, and sesame ranch dressings.

The mouth-watering main course dishes are masterpieces of Standridge, such as the Organic Scottish Salmon with spaghetti squash, turnip greens, and black trumpet, as well as a beef lover’s dream, the Local Pasture-Raised Striploin with Brussel’s sprouts and olive oil potato puree. For vegetarians, the Cauliflower “Steak” with romesco and vegetable chutney is a popular choice. Not only does the eatery serve impeccable cuisine, Café Clover also offers an full bar under the reins of bartender Johnny Swet, previously of The Skylark and Jimmy. One of Swet’s specialties is the Gold Rush, mixing Bullbeit bourbon, clover honey, and lemon. Swet’s drinks have a strong taste, but nutritional value is also considered, going along with Rabin’s overall vision of clean eating. Reflected through the restaurant’s dedication in delivering an extraordinary experience for each guest, Café Clover’s atmosphere is inviting to those who seek healthier dining options. Haute Izakaya Comes to Midtown T

here are many ways to get from point A to point B. You can fly economy or first class, take the subway, Uber or even a chauffeur driven Maybach. But in life, what lingers in the memory after arriving at the destination are the journeys flown first or business or riding in style, much like dining at Zuma. You can find your Japanese fix anywhere in the city, but a meal that’s remembered long after its over can only be had in a handful of places, such as Zuma. With outposts in destinations sporting the most flagrant displays of conspicuous consumption such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Miami, Hong Kong, London, Istanbul , Dacta Peninsula, and Bangkok, Zuma has perfected the Pavlovian bells and whistles that attracts the moneyed and beautiful jetset crowd like bees to honey. Modelesque DJs, a sexy and stylish bi level lounge and dining space designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu, exotic cocktails with rare sakes and wines, and an otherworldly Omakase menu are enough to support the hype of New York’s most anticipated newcomer.

After waiting weeks for a reservation, the best way to experience Zuma is to live large and order the premium Omakase menu which leaves your culinary journey in the capable hands of Executive chef Rainer Becker who curates a tasting flight of the most indulgent highlights of the menu. To experience the most popular dishes try the equally as impressive classic Omakase. Touted as a contemporary yet

elevated Izakaya, the menu encompasses the fine art of Japanese cuisine with a sushi bar, a robata grill, and open kitchen that prepares classic dishes with bold and intense flavors. With the Omakase menu each dish is not revealed until it’s served which entices the dining experience with the element of surprise. Highlights from the premium menu included a rich and spicy lobster miso soup, toro and seabass sashimi, lobster tempura, tataki beef with truffle, seared tuna with ponzu, king crab with ponzu lime butter, artichoke with a truffle dressing and a succulent and perfectly marbled medium rare wagyu beef tenderloin. Save room for the dessert which is a decadent ending to a memorable meal- an ice sculpture holding exotic fruits, a molten chocolate cake, rich ice cream and sorbet and a kinako cake with cocoa crumble. Afterwards head up to the sleek lounge to end the night with an exotic cocktail and embrace the high style living of New York City. Zuma 261 Madison Avenue NY, NY 10016 212.544.9862

is available. Guests can choose from organic eggs, sandwiches such as the open-faced BLT and grilled cheese panini, “from the griddle” options such as whole wheat French toast and house-made almond-spelt pancakes, several salads including Tuscan kale, as well as mimosas, Bellini’s, and sangria. Perfect Puffs and Ramen in Hell’s Kitchen

T

he Portugese have empanadas, the Indians have samosas, the Jamaicans have patties, the Russians have fried pierogis, and the Thais have curry puffs. This delectable snack consisting of a hot crispy pastry shell oozing with a delicious filling transcends borders and satiates the appetite in any culture. This beloved street food is what inspired Thai native Phet Pater to replicate in the US and thus Puff Cha was born. Noting that all of the Thai restaurants, especially in Hell’s Kitchen, served the same types of dishes that were exotic 20 years ago but have since become de riguer, like Pad Thai, Masaman curry, Pad Kee Mao, he set out to do something different and serve authentic Thai food not found anywhere else in the city. So he started out with a tiny shop making fresh curry puffs which were an overnight hit. The origins of the curry puff came from the Portuguese right after World War 1 where native chefs substituted custard fillings with a Thai spiced palette. Phet’s unique and delicate puffs are stuffed with curried chicken, and taro, basil chicken, Korean

BBQ, and Thai BBQ. Wanting to expand his menu beyond these beloved curry puffs, Phet worked with his good friend and soba master Shuichi Kotani, the former executive chef of Totto Ramen to create an authentic ramen and soba program that is equally as authentic and satisfying. Kotani has spent over 10 years mastering the art of the buckwheat noodle has taught his craft to some of master chefs of Ja-

pan and New York including Joel Rubichon. Easily some of the best ramen and soba to be had in the city, Phet simmers his broths for over 8 hours to create a perfectly rich and flavorful broth with bold flavors which are delicately laced with aromatic exotic Asian spices like lemongrass or five spice. Try the duck noodle with thin sliced roasted duck in a savory broth that’s perfect for a cold winter night. Other pan Asian specialties are the rich Kao Ka Moo a stewed and caramelized pork tender leg that melts off the bone and cooked in delicious Thai spices, the spicy Made in New York Noodle which is a healthier version of pad thai topped with chili, dried shrimp, ground pork, and a fish ball. To whet the appetite start with the savory and spicy Puff cha wings one of Thailand’s most famous street foods, or the steamed chicken dumplings. Even if you don’t live in Hell’s Kitchen a visit to Puff Cha is well worth the trek. Puff Cha 457 West 50th Street NY, NY 10019 646.682.7709

Quite simply said, Burger & Lobster serves only 3 items consisting of lobster or burgers, which is the perfect solution for an indecisive foodie. A simple concept that has taken over London by storm, this New York City outpost is destined to be a hit and occupies a sprawling 13,000 square feet bright and airy bi level space that can seat up to 340 guests in the heart of the Flatiron. One of the best deals in town for $20 you can choose from a New England style lobster roll generously stuffed with a 1-1/2 pound lobster, a 1-1/2 pound lobster served steamed or grilled, or a 10 oz. Pat La Frieda burger available with bacon and cheese all served with crispy thin fries and a salad. For those with a heartier appetite choose from larger lobsters that weigh up to 15 pounds which are on display in the main floor and have been playfully named. Be sure to visit the “lobster condo” downstairs that holds up to 4,000 crustaceans delivered daily. 772 Ninth Avenue, NY, NY

K Rico South American’s take their steaks seriously. Veteran restaurateur and chef John Greco partnered with his brother Tommy Greco to create Hell’s Kitchen’s latest steakhouse with a South American flair. The secret to the South American style of grilling is the “plancha” grill that sears the meat to lock in juices and flavor before grilling it to order which has been masterfully executed by Chef Steven Cruz who has travelled extensively to the region. Choose from South American specialties like fufu de chorizo, arepas- Columbian corn cakes, roasted oysters with queso de cabra, creamed spinach and bacon, shrimp cazuela, beef empanadas or mixed seafood ceviche with a jalapeno and passion fruit vinaigrette. The steaks are grilled to perfection and served on a sizzling platter with the signature K Rico on the bone sirloin steak, filet mignon or entrana skirt steak with a cactus salad. End the night with one of their indulgent desserts such as a chocolate espresso flan or rich quarto leche cake.

Olma Caviar Boutique & Bar Champagne wishes and caviar dreams come to life at Olma Caviar Bar and Restaurant in the Food Hall of the Plaza Hotel, which specializes in precisely that- champagne and caviar pairings. While this delicacy has been associated with a life of luxury and excess Olma scours the world for the best caviar a poisson can provide. If money is no object it is here that you can find the rare Russian Siberian Baeri, Russian Osetra Karat or Beluga caviar which will set you back $420 for 2 ounces. Other indulgent bites include foie gras, salmon caviar or smoked lox served on blinis. The best way to taste a range of the complete selection of Olma caviars is the tasting platter for $80 to start the night in the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous sort of way.
