Checking In:

The Casablanca Hotel By Lisa Loverro I’m sure most of you can sympathize with the love/hate relationship I experience with Time Square. I love attending Broadway shows but hate the massive crowds of tourists converging in the area. And while why they would want to visit the crossroads of the world, I’ve always been hesitant to recommend a stay at one of Time Square’s The Casablanca Hotel, on West 43rd street, however, offers a very boutique experience and as the saying goes, location, location, location…it can’t be beat. It’s a small, hidden gem with just 48 rooms and a stone’s throw away from the bright lights of Broadway. It quietly exists among its towering neighbors and, more importantly, the friendly staff and casual vibe will have you wondering if you are, indeed, in New York City. Resident February 2012

Upon arrival, an energetic doorman eagerly escorted me over to the front desk for a quick check in by a welcoming reception staff. The hotel’s café, aptly named Rick’s, is and have a cup of coffee, watch TV or just start a conversation with other guests. The rooms, small but adequate, are all you’ll need for a good night’s sleep with comfy beds and Ceiling fans, mosaics and wooden blinds pay homage to the theme of the hotel in a delicate way, not forcing the point to death. Sound proofed windows minimize any noise echoing from the outside world and the hotel key. If visiting during the summer months, there’s a roof deck and if you’re lucky enough to score a room for New Year’s Eve, you’ll

be able to almost reach out and touch the dropping ball. The Casablanca also serves complimentary cocktail reception including a various selection of wines and cheeses…a rarity for city hotels. And for an added bonus guests receive free passes to the New York Sports club just up the street. So next time a friend or family member decides to visit the Big Apple, especially if about recommending a Times Square stay because when it comes to Times Square, not all hotels are created equal. There’s the large, the seedy and the Casablanca…a stay they’ll fondly remember as time goes by.
