From the Director We are pleased to provide you with our new Nashville Public Library publication, Unbound! Unbound is an added dimension to the library’s online presence in print form. There is something for everyone at the library. In an article recently published in National Civic Review, I stated, “The library is certainly one of the most trusted institutions in the community. It is the place that is open to all.” At Nashville Public Library, we are proud to offer programming that the entire community can enjoy. Our summer reading program, themed “Nashville Digs Reading,” will offer a range of activities from magicians to anime to gardening tips. The 2013 International Puppet Festival will consist of international puppeteers and performers for all ages to enjoy. Find technical support, computer classes, assistance in the job lab, download ebooks and emagazines, all for free. Get your library card today and discover what the library has to offer. Nashville Public Library’s 2013 Nashville International Puppet Festival, June 21-23 The Nashville Public Library’s 2013 Nashville International Puppet Festival is a free, family-friendly event at the main branch of the Nashville Public Library. The festival will take place June 21 to 23, and will feature puppetry performances, workshops, activities and a parade. The schedule of events provides a variety of entertainment for all ages. Library puppet shows are free but require a ticket for entry. Tickets may be picked up on the day of show at the downtown library. On Saturday June 22, TPAC will present a performance by world renowned puppeteer Phillip Huber. Known for his work with marionettes in “Being John Malkovich” and in Disney’s “Oz, The Great and Powerful,” Huber will perform “Suspended Animation.” Tickets for both shows go on sale May 9th online at www.nashvillepuppetfestival.com. Frugality and Creativity Benefit Library Jennifer Hunsicker A few years ago, Hadley Park Branch was one of several NPL branches to receive the benefits of a grant for puppets. As a result of this grant, Hadley Park Branch received over 40 puppets. Librarian and Branch Manager Linda Emerson wanted to better utilize the puppets at the Hadley Park Branch. Emerson wanted a puppet theatre. 28

After finding the cost of pre-made puppet theatres to be excessive, she used her research skills to find out how to make one herself. Emerson says, “One person had converted an old tv console into a puppet theatre.” She then searched local thrift shops and flea markets for just the right piece of furniture. She found an old dresser, gutted it, and

then nailed the front of the drawers back on. She selected paints and material for the curtains. After painting it, she had a tailor make the curtains. Now, the Hadley Park Branch has a puppet theatre for under $150 in materials cost. The Hermitage Branch Library heard of her creation and requested one of their own. While the Hadley Park Cont’d. 29

When I got home, I researched the city and found out about the job.” She moved here in 2000 during the time when the five big area libraries and

the Main library were built. She laughs as she adds, “I had only intended to stay two years.” It’s now been nearly 13! With frugality and creativity, Linda Emerson has not only brought us her talent as a librarian and manager, but she has created a useful piece of art which will be used in the community for years to come.

Build a Puppet Theatre

• Find ornately ugly dresser. Remove drawers – of dresser, that is! • Knock out supporting cross-pieces with hammer, or saw off flush with sides. • Knock off backs of bottom drawers. • Sand rough edges to avoid splinters. • Choose paint. • Spray a couple coats of paint. • Attach bottom drawer faces. • Paint trim. (I painted trim on drawer faces before attaching them) • Spray clear coat. (Don’t panic if it looks cloudy at first.) • Choose fabric and embellishment (optional). • Hem fabric for curtains. • Buy tension rod and hang curtains. • Use hot glue gun for embellishments. • Back panel of fabric can be used for a backdrop, along with tension rod. • Find someone with a truck to help transport it. • Add puppet.
