In this conversation with the founders of HotHaus, Amanda Dziedzic and Laurel Kohut, we dive into the origins, inspirations, and future aspirations of their glassblowing studio, capturing their journey in the world of glass art.

How did your experiences at Monash University and the Jam Factory in Adelaide shape the foundation of HotHaus, and how do they continue to influence your work today?

Monash introduced us to glassblowing, but it was the Jam that taught us how to blow glass. It not only showed us the technique but also taught us how to work as a team, develop our own glass language, and exposed us to a plethora of different artists and makers. It opened our eyes to the importance of community and, most importantly, gave us a strong work ethic as practising artists. It is this work ethic that we now bring into our own studio, HotHaus.

Can you describe the creative synergy between the two of you, and how this drives your artistic process?

Laurel and I have worked together for over 10 years now and have developed a unique working relationship, benefiting from shared training and a production background. We complement each other, rounding out what the other lacks. After working together for so long, we know exactly what each other needs, making a challenging job easier with that familiarity to rely on.

Your studio motto is 'good design, good glass, good times.' How do these elements come together in your work and the atmosphere at HotHaus?

First and foremost, we honour good design. Without it, everything else is bound to fail. We pride ourselves on creating 'good glass’, and at the end of the day, if you're not enjoying yourself, you're doing it wrong! This is our life. We pour our whole selves into our work because we want it to succeed, but we also aim to enjoy the process. Life is too short not to.

Amanda, your work is heavily inspired by the natural world. Could you expand on how elements from nature inspire your glass designs?

I like looking to the natural world for inspiration and enjoy crafting it into glass. The natural world offers so much: color, texture, form, etc. There is so much beauty to be discovered and highlighted. I also appreciate its universal appeal. It can delight both a small child and a grown adult simultaneously. Nature is joy in its purest form. It refreshes me and lifts me up when I need it the most; the natural world is my constant.

Laurel, your recent works have a Victorian gothic influence. How does this historical and emotional theme shape your glass art?

The Victorian Gothic influence is actually a misconception of my work. As an object maker, my fascination lies in the attachments people form with objects in their lives, particularly jewellery, due to its personal and sentimental value. I wanted to explore jewellery in a different way—scaling up the objects so that the viewer could at once recognise the form but also ponder the nature of preciousness and perhaps the meaning of their own keepsakes.

Teaching glassblowing is a significant aspect of HotHaus. What do you find most rewarding about introducing newcomers to this craft, and why is community so important in the world of glass art? There is a lot of excitement around glassblowing, including students eager to fulfil their dream of shaping glass. Guiding them through this process is a privilege, as we witness their joy in crafting their first piece. Community support has been very important for us, especially during our initial fundraiser for our furnace, where donors received a handblown paperweight. This overwhelming support helped us to succeed. Now, with our studio and classes, we can return the favour and help our creative community flourish.

With both of you having over 20 years of experience in glassblowing, what continues to excite and challenge you in this art form, and what future projects or directions are you looking forward to exploring?

The material of glass itself remains a source of endless fascination for us artists. The thrill of achieving the perfect starter bubble never fades; little things matter in glassblowing. Continuous learning is vital, allowing us to refine our craft and develop our unique glass language. Our next big project on the horizon is the launch of our very own lighting range. We are so excited to see these ideas finally come to fruition; it has been a long time coming. We will be launching our lighting range as part of Melbourne Design Week in May. ■

THE LUME Melbourne has unveiled an extraordinary experience, "Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius," which redefines the boundaries of immersive art exhibitions. As visitors step into the colossal canvas at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, they are greeted by the animated grandeur of da Vinci's most famous works, including the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. This revolutionary presentation offers an unprecedented engagement with da Vinci's genius, far surpassing the traditional museum experience in both scope and interaction.

An artist whose mastery extends beyond the canvas to encompass roles as an inventor, scientist, philosopher, and musician, Leonardo da Vinci remains a peerless figure in history. His contributions across various disciplines, from architecture and engineering to the conceptualisation of flight, have laid the groundwork for countless modern innovations. THE LUME's latest offering not only showcases da Vinci's artistic achievements but also delves into his contributions to science and technology.

At the heart of this digital homage is a display of 40 "machine inventions" recreated from his notebooks by skilled Italian artisans, courtesy of the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome. These meticulously crafted inventions, ranging from conceptual flying machines to various mechanical devices, illustrate da Vinci's ingenuity and foresight, bridging the past with the potential of the future. This exhibition provides a connection to the spirit of the Renaissance, bringing his visionary concepts to life.

Further enriching the experience is a dedicated section exploring the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa through the pioneering work of French Optical Engineer Mr. Pascal Cotte. Utilising a multispectral camera, Cotte's research reveals layers of the masterpiece previously unseen, challenging long-held perceptions and offering new insights into da Vinci's methods and intentions.

In addition to celebrating da Vinci’s individual brilliance, the exhibition extends into the Italian Renaissance, spotlighting the era's artistic marvels and Leonardo's contemporaries who similarly shaped the course of art history. This segment offers an immersive visual feast, enveloping visitors in the splendour of Renaissance art and culture.

"Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius" is a multisensory exploration of creativity, innovation, and history. It invites audiences to dive into the world of a true maestro, whose work transcends time and continues to inspire awe and wonder. THE LUME Melbourne not only pays homage to da Vinci's legacy but also demonstrates the timeless relevance of his work and his contributions to both the arts and sciences. ■

with ajo blanco, charred cos and Espelette pepper

Italian restaurant Enoteca Boccaccio shares one of their most popular dishes created by chef Andrew Beddoes - Fremantle octopus with ajo blanco, charred cos and Espelette pepper.

Enoteca Boccaccio Level 1, 1046 Burke Road, Balwyn

Method Ingredients

Octopus marinade

1 Fremantle octopus

18 leaves of baby cos

2 cloves garlic

3 sprigs thyme leaves

1tbsp Espelette pepper

150ml extra virgin olive oil

Pulse all ingredients, except for the octopus, in a food processor until smooth.

Brine

3l water 300g salt

Ajo blanco

300g old sourdough (chopped up)

400g blanched almonds

4 cloves garlic

100ml extra virgin olive oil

50ml sherry vinegar

In a food processor, blitz the sourdough, almonds, garlic and olive oil with 750ml water

Season with vinegar and salt to taste

Check the consistency to ensure it is sufficiently thick.

Serves 6

To prepare the brine, bring the salt and water to a boil in a heavy-bottomed pan.

Once boiled, whisk to dissolve all the salt and allow to cool.

Once cool, add the octopus and leave it to marinate for 2 hours. After marination, remove the octopus from the brine and rinse under cold water.

Apply the marinade to the octopus and vacuum seal it tightly in a Cryovac bag.

Heat a large pan of water on the stove to 65°C and place the sealed octopus in the water.

Cook the octopus for 7 hours.

Once cooked, allow it to cool before removing it from the vacuum bag.

To serve

Rinse the octopus under cold water and cut the tentacles into 2-inch pieces.

BBQ the tentacles until well charred. Add the cos leaves to the BBQ to lightly char them until they wilt. In a large bowl, combine the octopus and cos, dressing them with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, and Espelette pepper. Season with flake salt.

Spread the ajo blanco on a serving plate, arrange the octopus on and around it, and place the baby cos on top of the octopus. Sprinkle a little more flake salt to finish.

Small Second Home Solutions

Building a small second home on residential and rural properties across Victoria has recently become significantly easier, indicating a strategic effort by the Victorian Government to diversify housing options and increase housing supply.

This initiative stems from the government's comprehensive Housing Statement for the decade of 2024-2034, aiming to address the critical need for more accessible and varied housing solutions.

Recent amendments to the Victoria Planning Provisions, planning schemes, and building regulations have streamlined the process for adding a small second home, often referred to as a granny flat, secondary dwelling, or accessory dwelling unit, on a property. As of 14 December 2023, under Amendment VC253 and the Building Amendment (Small Second Dwellings) Regulations 2023, these dwellings, up to 60 square metres, generally no longer require a planning permit unless affected by specific controls such as flooding or environmental considerations.

While the need for a planning permit has been largely eliminated, the construction of a small second home must still comply with certain criteria. A building permit is mandatory to ensure adherence to siting, amenity, design, and safety standards. These dwellings, which must include a kitchen, bathroom, and toilet, cannot be subdivided or sold separately from the main residence. In addition, they must not be connected to reticulated natural gas and do not necessitate a car parking space.

This policy opens up new possibilities for who can inhabit these small second homes. Whether for a family member, a dependent person, or unrelated individuals, these dwellings offer flexibility for rental or personal use, governed by the same residential tenancy requirements as primary homes, including room sizes, facilities, and smoke alarm regulations, as outlined by Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Now, most properties in residential and rural zones can welcome a small second home without the hurdles of obtaining a planning permit, though a building permit remains a prerequisite. This legislative change promises to make it easier for families to expand their living arrangements and for property owners to contribute to alleviating the housing shortage, all while adhering to the necessary safety and design standards.

The Victorian Government's initiative reflects a proactive approach to solving the housing crisis. By simplifying the creation of small second homes, Victoria is increasing housing supply while promoting a more inclusive and flexible housing market. This move is anticipated to have a substantial impact on meeting the needs of Victorians, highlighting the state's commitment to innovative housing solutions in the face of growing demand ■
