This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing Alyce Tran, co-founder of the cult homewares brand In The Roundhouse. Alyce shared insights into the brand's unique vision, creative process, and plans for the future. Join us as we discover the world of In The Roundhouse and discover what makes this Australian brand so special.

What inspired you and Brooke to create In The Roundhouse, and how did your backgrounds influence the brand's vision?

While the inception of In The Roundhouse has a more extensive back story, in a nutshell, we recognised a gap in the market for a brand offering well-designed homewares at an attainable price point, with constantly refreshed ranges.

How do you curate the unique mix-and-match prints for your tableware, and what role do collaborations play in your design process?

I am constantly analysing the market, particularly fashion trends, and incorporating those concepts into our line. When our designer or I cannot draw or execute a vision ourselves, we engage an artist to create an item or pattern for us. Fifty per cent of our line is generated in-house by myself or our designer, who has collaborated with me for over a decade. She helped conceptualise my first business, The Daily Edited, and continues to work with me on all my projects to bring my vision to life.

In The Roundhouse has gained a cult following. What do you believe sets your brand apart from others in the homewares market?

We are constantly generating newness. I don’t believe there has ever been a brand in this space that has produced so many designs in such a short period of time. We do this to ensure our customers don't end up with the same items as their friends, as I don’t think anyone wants to be generic!

Your tableware is designed to be affordable and accessible. How do you balance quality and design with maintaining an attainable price point?

There are some items we sample and create that we don’t bring to market because the price point would be too high. Sometimes, we have to forgo certain manufacturing paths, but where there is a will, there is a way. We iterate a lot of new products with different suppliers to ensure we strike the right balance between quality/design and price.

Can you share some insights into your creative process when developing new products, and how you ensure they align with the brand's aesthetic?

This is challenging as we have many different styles to suit various aesthetics, but overall, we create products that look and feel fresh and youthful. We continually strive to design items that not only appeal to current trends but also embody a vibrant spirit.

Tell us about your event styling concierge service. How does it work, and what inspired you to offer this unique service to your customers?

Essentially, a customer simply needs to complete our styling concierge request form, and we will mock up a table setting to assist them with any event they might be planning, whether it's an intimate gathering or a large-scale celebration. This service is designed to help streamline their event preparation, ensuring they can achieve the perfect ambience for their special occasion.

As In The Roundhouse continues to grow, what are your plans for expanding the brand, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

We are expanding into new markets and are enthusiastic about the possibility of creating a larger physical expression of our brand through a retail store. This move would allow us to enhance our brand presence and provide customers with a more immersive shopping experience. ■

Pedalling for a Purpose

For over 15 years, the Chain Reaction Challenge Foundation has been inspiring individuals and businesses to come together and make a profound impact on the lives of sick and hospitalised children. Founded in 2007 by Berrick Wilson after his daughter Milla's harrowing experience with a brain haemorrhage at just two days old, Chain Reaction has since conducted 51 rides across Australia and New Zealand, raising an impressive $42 million for children in need.

At the heart of Chain Reaction's mission is the belief that individuals working together can make a real difference in the lives of sick children and the charities that support them. Through challenging cycling events, the foundation encourages senior executives to utilise their profiles and networks to raise funds and support important causes.

This year, several Marshall White colleagues have answered the call to action, signing up to take part in the Chain Reaction Challenge and raise vital funds for two deserving Melbourne-based charity partners: Monash Children's Hospital and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Monash Children's Hospital's Gait Lab is a cutting-edge facility that strives to enhance the mobility and independence of infants, children, and adolescents facing developmental, neurological, or orthopaedic challenges hindering lower limb function. The funds raised will facilitate the upgrade of equipment and increase staffing, providing the best possible diagnosis and treatment for their patients and reducing wait times for families.

The Starlight Children's Foundation, on the other hand, focuses on the emotional well-being of seriously ill kids. The funds raised will enhance their health and happiness through the Starlight Express Room and Captain Starlight Programs, counteracting the disruptions of illness on their lives.

Marshall White's involvement with Chain Reaction dates back to 2018, and since then, our past and present employees have raised an incredible $1 million for the foundation. This year, five Marshall White colleagues – Harry Bongiorno, Alan Crawford,

Tom Hayne, Justin Holod, and Kaine Lanyon – have stepped up to the challenge, determined to make a difference in the lives of sick children and their families.

We spoke with Sales Executive Tom Hayne about his experience with Chain Reaction and the inspiration behind his involvement. Tom shared the following insights:

What inspired you to get involved with Chain Reaction and start participating in their cycling events?

Seeing what the foundation could provide to their charity partners every year and watching my dad, Andrew, complete six events were big inspirations for me. Also, having spent some time in and out of the hospital at a young age with a heart condition motivates me every year to give back to those families that need our support the most, given that I am one of the lucky ones who now has a clean bill of health and am able to contribute my part.

Can you describe the overall experience of participating in a Chain Reaction ride? What aspects of the ride have been most memorable or impactful for you?

Once the months of training and early alarms are over and you arrive at the start of the ride, it feels like we are on a professional cycling tour. The amount of support from the volunteers and the Chain Reaction team is second to none. As riders, all we need to do is pedal, and everything else is organized for the day ahead. During the ride, we hear multiple stories from families directly affected by or living through the daily challenges we are raising money for, which motivates us even more the following day, knowing our pain on the bike is minimal compared to what sick children and their families endure every day.

Beyond the important goal of raising money for those in need, what additional value or personal benefits have you gained through your involvement with Chain Reaction?

The friendships and network that we create and the camaraderie that we build through Chain Reaction are amazing and continue beyond the event each year without fail. Additionally, of course, it keeps us fit to have such a significant training goal ahead of us.

Prawn Tortelli with Saffron Butter

With his modern twist on fresh, seasonal Italian food, Osteria Ilaria’s head chef, Jack Ives, shares his Prawn Tortelli with Saffron Butter and Prawn Oil recipe with us.

Ingredients Method

Pasta Dough

6 large free-range eggs

600g Tipo 00 flour

Tortelli Filling

175g butter

175g flour

100g finely diced shallot

1 litre quality fish stock

300g finely chopped peeled prawns (keep shells)

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

Saffron Butter

3g saffron

2 large shallots, sliced

1/2 bulb of garlic, crushed

100ml white wine

1/2 bulb fennel, sliced (keep tops)

700ml fish stock

250g butter, diced

Half of the prawn shells

Juice of half a lemon

Prawn Oil

150ml olive oil

150ml vegetable oil

75g tomato paste

Half of the prawn shells

To make the pasta dough, place the flour on a workbench and create a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and whisk with a fork. Gradually incorporate the flour using your hands until combined. Knead the mixture for 20 minutes, wrap tightly in clingfilm, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

For the tortelli filling, gently sweat the shallot until translucent (about 5 minutes), then add the butter and stir until melted. Add all of the flour and stir for another 5 minutes. Gradually add the fish stock (approx. 150ml at a time), whisking constantly. Once all the stock is added, incorporate the prawns, lemon juice, and zest, stirring for 2 minutes. Season well with salt, then place mixture into a bowl and cool in the fridge.

For the saffron butter, gently fry the shallot, garlic, fennel, and prawn shells until soft. Add all of the white wine and reduce by half. Add the fish stock and saffron, simmer uncovered for 1 hour to make a stock. Strain, keeping only the liquid, and slowly whisk in the butter until emulsified. Season well.

For the prawn oil, fry the tomato paste and prawn shells in a small pot for 10 minutes, then add the oil and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Strain and set aside the oil, discarding the shells.

Using a pasta roller, roll out your pasta dough on a lightly floured surface until it is as thick as a 10-cent coin. Cut circles from the dough with a circle cutter. Place 1 heaped teaspoon of the prawn mixture in the centre of each circle. Wet the edges of the circles with water. Fold the dough over the filling to create a semi-circle and press the edges together firmly. Place your finger in the middle of the flat edge of the semi-circle, then wrap the two corners of the pasta around your finger and press tightly to seal.

To finish, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, gently warm the saffron sauce in a large pan. Drop the tortelli into boiling water and cook for 4 minutes. Once cooked, strain and carefully add the pasta to the sauce, tossing gently. Serve in bowls garnished with a few drops of prawn oil and the tops of the fennel.
