MON 30 SEPT - SAT 5 OCT One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, Andrew LloydWebber’s CATS will come to Royal & Derngate from Monday 30 September to Saturday 5 October. Based on TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking adaptation features one of his most memorable musical scores, spectacular set design, extraordinary costumes and stunning choreography, making CATS is a uniquely magical musical. On just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benev-

olent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to the heaviside layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Music, dance and verse fuse together in an enchanting blend of fantasy, drama and romance. CATS opened at the New London Theatre in 1981 (winning an Olivier Award for Best Musical) and played almost 9,000 performances. It closed in 2002 having celebrated 21 recordbreaking years. On Broadway it was the winner of 7 Tony Awards (including Best Musical and Best Director) and ran for an amazing 18 years making it second only to The Phantom Of The Opera as Broadway’s longest running musical.

CATS continues to be a worldwide musical phenomenon, seen by over 50 million people, in over 300 cities in 26 countries around the world. It was last seen in the UK in 2008 where it enjoyed a hugely successful tour playing to sell-out audiences across the country. CATS takes to the Derngate stage from Monday 30 September to Saturday 5 October, starting at 7.30pm each evening, with matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Tickets priced from £15 to £38 can be booked by calling Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with. Tevye loves his daughters but has to convince his wife, and the villagers, that their decisions are actually falling in with tradition. Laughing Matters

Fri 13 Sept PURPLE VAN MAN: SEAN LOCK De Montfort Hall, Leicester

#FOFäU 'VOESBJTFS JO BU 5IF /PUUJOHIBN 3PZBM $PODFSU )BMM FRIDAY 13 SEPTEMBER ‘Laughing Matters’ started life as a project at the University of Nottingham in 2012 to come up with a new social enterprise. JTT realised that the skills and techniques used by stand up comedians could be used to tackle many of the problems faced by certain social groups such as those recovering from addiction. We decided to develop comedy based workshops with a focus on creative writing, stage presence and performance with the aim of helping to increase confidence and self-esteem, develop creativity and effective communication skills. Fast forward to May 2013 and the first ‘Laughing Matters’ Pilot featuring participants with past experiences of substance misuse took place.

What struck a chord the most was the fact that so many people were willing to give the course a go. Ask most people if they could write and perform their own comedy material in front of an audience in as little as four weeks and they would run a mile. However, we found that in the right safe and supportive environment people are willing to open up, speak up and have fun. Participants were able to gain a real sense of achievement from their work and develop skills that can benefit them in many areas of their life. Importantly the courses can offer a unique shared experience which can bring out the funny people often didn’t even know they had !

Pink Floyd fans are in for a treat when one of the UK’s top tribute bands The UK Pink Floyd Experience comes to our region this September, performing some of the group’s greatest hits from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The nine-piece band replicates perfectly the authentic sounds of Pink Floyd, performing songs from albums such as Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Sauer Full Of Secrets, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Ummagumma, Animals and The Wall, in the ultimate tribute to the iconic band.

The nine band members are all seasoned musicians, with the line up including three choreographed and costumed female backing vocalists. Lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Andrews fronts the band, with a voice that is remarkably similar to David Gilmour’s, replicating every nuance and intonation. With the state-of-the-art sound and a spectacular light show, the concert aims to recreate the atmosphere of a real Pink Floyd live show.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

Ronnie Wood

4JHOFE MJNJUFE FEJUJPOT OPX BWBJMBCMF BU $SPGU 8JOHBUFT (BMMFSZ Ronnie Wood, born in 1947 in Middlesex, born into a musical and artistic family. Before beginning his musical career he received formal art training at Ealing College of Art, London. Throughout the years, the artist and the musician have been

inseparable. As his musical career progressed, Ronnie continued his passion for painting and drawing; his subjects ranging from band members and musicians he admired, knew and sometimes played with, to family and close friends’ and of course, the self-portrait. It is as natural to find him with a pencil as with a guitar, drawing portraits of contemporaries and finding inspiration from his musical influences. Wood has been painting and sketching ever since he was a child and is a passionate and dedicated artist, taking inspiration from artists such as Egon Schiele, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. Nowadays Wood is adept at creating pieces from landscapes, to portraiture, abstract to architectural; creating his original pieces in charcoals, oils, watercolours, spray paints, oil pastels and acrylics. Varying his style and his medium depending on the feeling or mood he is trying to evoke with his work. Painting at full throttle, and with technical prowess, Wood gives the art lover an exhilarating and thrilling front row view of the Stones on stage,

as his vibrant paintings convey the electricity of a live performance. The intensity that Ronnie Wood brings to his guitar playing on stage is brilliantly echoed on canvas and paper as he translates the rawness of a Rolling Stones performance through rhythmic lines, bold colours and awesomely accurate facial expressions. ust in case you thought it wasn’t possible to improve a classic English country pub such as The Fox Inn in Hallaton, be prepared for a surprise, because the proprietors Wendy and Mass have just made three huge strides forward for our comfort, satisfaction and delight. Not only has the recent reburbishment has been a huge success, there are plans afoot for some splendid additions to

the traditionally local, seasonal menu for the coming autumn... and, perhaps most exciting of all, to open a vintage shop on the premises. With its sunny garden by the village pond, there’s no more relaxing or entertaining spot for a late-summer drink watching the ducks and moorhens indulge in their laid-back disputes. And as the autumn nights draw in, new life has been breathed into the old pace by the subtle refurbishment which has seen the cosy bar and dining room joined together to allow warmth and laughter to flow through the whole pub. Entirely traditional in feel, the pub now works better for everyone sampling the

Woodford’s Wherry Norfolk Ale and the procession of great guest beers that have recently led to a Cask Marque Award. Where the Fox menu has always boasted fresh, seasonal ingredients in their hearty and wholesome pies, meaty platters and home-made soups, Mass and Wendy are about to up the ante in style: “The shooting season starts at the beginning of September,” Mass announces, “so we’ll be introducing dishes featuring local game – pheasant and partridge and more.” And discerning shoppers across Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland will be excited to hear of Wendy’s plans

to open a shop at The Fox, a sister establishment to The Nook, the thriving vintage and gifts shop next to the Falcon in Uppingham. “Watch this space!” Wendy says of the outbuilding at the back of the pub, currently being given a stylish spruce up. “There’ll be furniture and clothing, posters and paintings, lots of gift ideas, old and new. We plan to open for business in October!” THE FOX INN, North End, Hallaton, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 8UJ Tel: 01858 555278

Prolagene Gel has been a very unique product over any other product I have ever used, it is perfect for burns, sunburn, scars, anti ageing, soothing and acne. It was originally used in a burns unit in France back in the 70’s.

Containing L-Proline, Decleor thought why not create a new range based on the gel, with the technology for a new anti ageing rage. L-Proline and Soy Extract make the iconic L-Proline Complex to boost collagen and tightens the skin support structure. To enhance the L-Proline Complex is Iris Essential Oil which increases cell renewal and our ‘hero’ ingredient Hylauronic Acid which plumps the skin with moisture. n all our long and pleasurable years of dining out across Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, we’ve rarely come across any establishment that pays so much attention to the

preparation and presentation of a menu – to the whole dining experience – as the Swan at Braybrooke. The stylish restaurant and pub scores immediately on atmosphere and history, welcome and comfort; but the Swan’s menu takes far longer to prepare, and a blissful time to appreciate. To proprietors Jo and Tremain, together with Head Chef Djafar, the food served up here is a real labour of love – with local, fresh, seasonal ingredients of premium quality sought out with obvious enthusiasm and pride. “We’ve crafted a

menu to appeal to those who enjoy the modern British favourites,â€? Jo says, “as well as foodies who prefer a bit of flair!â€? The result of the team’s ethos can be tasted in every mouthful of every dish on the menu, none more impressive than the Chef’s Specials which change twice weekly. They offer such delights as the smoky, exotic Avocado Diverso starter (avocado served with crab meat & smoked English trout and finished with horseradish and marie rose sauce, ÂŁ6.95) and mains as irresistible as Salmon Fillet Thai Broth (ÂŁ13.95) and Mixed Pork Casserole (Pork Fillet, sausage and bacon slowly

A partner in the Leicestershire law firm since 1987, Martin is head of Bray & Bray’s department looking after Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney. Professionally, Martin is something of a rarity, being qualified as a Solicitor and Chartered Tax Advisor; but it’s really on a personal level that he stands out from the crowd. Martin’s business credentials, professional expertise and astonishing list of private interests all begin to run together as soon as you meet

the man himself. That’s because his work and private life all revolve around people: there’s just no disguising his interest in getting to know clients, colleagues, local people, even humble interviewers! It’s this good humour and keenness to interact that have led Martin into all kinds of community work – “giving something back to the community that has been so kind to my business and my family,” he says, referring to his 21 years working behind the scenes on Harborough’s

Late-Night Shopping Committee and Harborough Improvement Team. A former Round Tabler, he also gives his time to the local Chamber of Trade and Lions Club, often accompanied by his wife, Cllr. Dr. Sarah Hill. Martin’s many “interests and enthusiasms” include fine food and wine, and all things automotive. “I’m a very good cook,” he admits, putting his ultra-productive use of time down to not owning a TV. “I make all my own sausage and brawn, and cure my own

bacon. I’ve got a labrador. And a go-kart... and a tractor!” Be sure and drop by Bray & Bray if you need assistance with family, property, tax or any other point of law. Or just drop by to ask Martin about his dry cured bacon. Rest assured, you’ll be made thoroughly welcome.
