Packaging Design and Artwork Packaging matters In any supermarket or retail outlet you will find millions of different products in all shapes and sizes, and all will have their own packaging. Packaging products for sale is not a new invention, in fact it’s been around for over a thousand years. Originally produced from reeds and paper to protect the goods being sold, in time the packaging was made of stronger materials, bronze and wood, and in some cases was ornately decorated. In modern times the decoration on the packs has become a very powerful marketing tool, and if designed well can dramatically increase the sales of the product within. The production of the pack is also very important, there are many things to consider when manufacturing a piece of packaging. It has to protect the goods inside, be easy to transport, demand the attention of the consumer and clearly describe it’s contents. Getting the artwork correct is vital, and not something to be left to amateurs as mistakes can be very expensive. At Pewter we have years of experience in the packaging design and artwork sector, and would be happy to talk to you about your requirements. Safeway Christmas Christmas is a critical trading period for retailers. Safeway started planning over a year ahead. Working to Safeway’s strong branding guidelines , three levels of pricing were established and by colour and style. Artwork was then implemented to over 200 products ranging from crackers to olive oil!

Safeway Sauces Food packaging by it’s very nature is a complex area. The need for a ‘stand out on the shelf’ design, coupled with nutritional information, cooking guidelines, ingredients and Trading Standards approval all create an interesting mix. Add to that Safeway’s strong brand guidelines and artwork can become a delicate balance. This range was of canned cooking sauces was aimed at the home use fast food market.
