INSIGHTS FROM THE INDUSTRY Interview with Rob Daniels and Richard Mack of CRU

Rob Daniels, Principal Consultant,

How do you see the global cable and wire industry progressing through the current financial climate? Rob Daniels: Like many industries the cable industry has been badly hit by the global recession that started towards the end of 2008. In particular, the slump in the construction sector has had a negative impact on wire and cable demand in many parts of the developed world. Now that economies around the world are starting to recover and the economic outlook is more positive we are forecasting a steady recovery in wire and cable demand growth, but for many parts of the developed world, demand will still not be back to pre recession levels in the near future. Richard Mack: For optical cable, the recession affected demand in late 2008, 2009, and 2010 in some markets. China, Australia, and a few others showed no slowdown in optical cable demand due to recession. Now, for optical cable, the recession is “over,” or generally is not a factor in most places. If fiber is needed to reach new locations, there usually is a favourable business case to spend organic funds or to raise funds externally. What is causing a slowdown in optical demand in some markets is that the fiber networks are largely completed. That is, they have been building out for years, have passed a peak of fiber penetrating into most network applications, and demand is dropping off. This is the situation in Japan, Korea, Singapore, UAE, some Nordic countries – these are either countries that started early with fiber or are small and have completed more than half the country. Others, such as US, Canada, Germany,

etc., have strong demand, but it will not keep going up – they are building at pretty good rates and won’t be installing more per year. Other markets, notably India, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, Chile, and many others in Lat. Am, Africa, ME, are growth markets – installing more and more. They want to spend on better networks, and there is evidence that this will help contribute toward growth in other sectors of the economy.

How do you see emerging markets playing a role within the industry? Rob Daniels: Even before the recession struck it was a feature of the metallic cable industry that the main driver of global growth was the developing world and that as a result wire and cable production in Asia was growing much faster than in Europe and the America’s, with China leading the way. This trend is continuing, but a slowdown in the growth rate in China and a recovery in Europe and North America means that the difference in growth rates between the developed and the developing world will narrow. However, it will still be the emerging markets that will still see the fastest growth in the next few years. Richard Mack: Fiber and cable is manufactured in fewer countries than metallic cable for power and lowvoltage energy applications. Fiber is made in about 15 countries, and optical cable is made in about 50 countries. So there are many countries, mainly developing economies, that import optical cable. Most of Lat. Am., Africa, E. Europe, and Central Asia depend on imports. Occasionally, a metallic cable will add

INTERVIEW lines to make optical cable. But generally, the role of emerging markets is as a consumer, not producer.

How have modern manufacturers adapted to the current financial climate and since the crisis in 2008? Rob Daniels: Over the last two decades the cable industry in Europe and North America has been undergoing steady consolidation with a regular stream of mergers and acquisitions. There has also been a trend towards greater specialisation in these regions. In Asia the cable industry structure now remains little altered, with only very few mergers and acquisitions, and there has also been much less specialisation. Around the world companies have looked to improve efficiencies and innovate as a way of coping with the recession.

other areas. Plus, for indoor cable and specialty cables, there also is work on the fire and safety requirements, as mentioned for metallic cable.

Are there any big changes in the way we are trading today? Rob Daniels: There have been no big changes to the way the cable industry trades over the last few years, although the share of the market taken by wholesalers and distributors has tended to be gradually rising. Richard Mack: No big changes in recent years. I would say the separate segments handled by distributors vs. direct sales are not really shifting. One factor of interest in with optical cable is that many telecom operators in countries of Africa, Latin America, for example, often do not have the engineering and construction resources for large fiber projects, so they use “turnkey contractors” to do design, project management, installation, training, and “hand-off.” Some of these prime contractors also handle the cable procurement. So as more emerging economies plan fiber projects, there has been steady use of these turnkey providers.

From a geographical point of view the markets with the greatest growth potential will be in the developing world, with countries such as India, Brazil and Indonesia

Richard Mack: As in no. 1, the manufacturers have focused more on adapting to telecom industry requirements than on economic recession. For example, as fiber is used closer to the end-user, or all the way to the home, there are requirements for different types of fiber and cable products. To address, the companies have pursued R&D in areas such as more compact cables, or cables that are easier to install, easier to handle, and cables that have outside-plant connectors already mounted on them. Thus, there was ongoing R&D, even during the recession years of 2009 and 2010, to address the new application market opportunities.

What advances in technology are making a difference within the cable manufacturing industry? Rob Daniels: There are a very broad range of wire and cable products produced around the world with lots of effort being put into developing new products and improving the performance of existing products. One area where technology has been developing is in the area of polymers used in cable making to both improve processing speeds and also to improve a cable’s performance during a fire. Richard Mack: For optical cable, there are advances in making the fiber itself, which have been going on for many years, and did not slow down during the recession. This includes larger preforms and faster draw speeds. For other optical cable materials, there is ongoing work on new approaches to water blocking, compact strength members, reduced cable-wall thickness, and

What markets should we watch out for in the coming years? Rob Daniels: From a geographical point of view the markets with the greatest growth potential will be in the developing world, with countries such as India, Brazil and Indonesia having the potential to be amongst the best performers over the next few years. The Russian market also has some good growth potential, but this may be held back by the current political crisis over the Ukraine. Richard Mack: China is half the world demand in optical cable, so it has a huge effect on the global industry and everyone is watching it. Other markets of interest for near-term growth are India, ASEAN countries, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and several in Europe.

With climate change becoming a concern, how do you see the cable industry preparing for changes in energy demand? Rob Daniels: In principle the whole issue of reducing carbon emissions is a positive driver for wire and cable demand as is the switch away from hydrocarbon fuels

INTERVIEW to electricity in areas such as vehicles. Renewable energy generation requires more wire and cable per MW than conventional large coal, oil and gas fuelled power stations. Also electric vehicles use more wire and cable than combustion engined vehicles. Like most industries the cable industry is keen to promote its “green” credentials and so cable manufacturers are looking to reduce energy consumption and also to eliminate potentially toxic materials from its products. Richard Mack: No big effects here. In some applications, such as local access and data centers, optical networks can use less energy to operate than copper networks, and both network operators and suppliers are studying this. But for cable manufacturing, I would say that it is like any other manufacturing industry – pursue energy efficiency, watch the entire product life-cycle (including transportation) for carbon footprint, etc.

Has it been a good year for the cable and wire industry? Rob Daniels: 2013 was another difficult year for the cable industry with below trend growth and overcapacity in many markets. As a result industry profitability has remained low. With an improving outlook for 2014 the hope is that market conditions will improve this year. Richard Mack: 2013 was not a “good” year for optical cable, as China had a slow year. For most of the last 10 years, y-y growth in optical cable demand has been greater than 10%, but last year it was less than 10%. Other markets, such as the US and Russia were flat or down a little.

What have been the key factors of the success of the top 10 cable manufacturers? Rob Daniels: The profiles of the leading cable manufacturers differ from one another both in terms of product range and geographical markets, so there is no uniformity in what are the key factors for success. One sector which has been an important contributor to profitability in the last few years has been the underground and submarine high voltage cable market, with companies having a strong position in these markets benefitting from this. Richard Mack: I would say that the best companies have kept up on R&D for the loop (access or FTTx) market, and have continued their work to maintaining longterm relationships with key customers – large telecom operators. Control of costs is important, and fiber is the major costs in making optical cable. As a result, top telecom cable makers have invested in fiber-making capacity, which requires very large investments.

Has the use of fibre in the data, communications and broadcast world effected the copper product 6

manufacturers, and has this had a knock on effect to the cable manufacturing industry? Rob Daniels: I’ll let Rich comment on this. Richard Mack: See my comments below—mainly an effect on TWP external cable in access networks, but wireless is also a factor there, not just fiber. Optical cable fared a little differently from metallic cable in the recession, because there are some different driving forces in telecom, not all subject to economic slowdowns. Also, there are some situations where ICT (information and communication technology) can improve efficiencies in other industries (say health care, education, banking, etc.), so there can be interest in some ICT investment as a way to lower other costs. Rob’s point about the developing economies needing to invest more in cable networks (power and telecom) and in other infrastructure that uses cable, is true for FO as well, but the developed economies are also investing in FO to get better bandwidth service. Another point: we look at three broad segments of communications cable: 1.) External or outdoor copper telecom cable 2.) Other metallic cable for comms, which includes indoor cable (LAN cables), coaxial cable for CATV, other coaxial -- basically all RF cable for video, CCTV, etc., 3.) Optical cable In these segments, number 1 is on a long-term downhill slide, and it will never regain past peaks, although there could be some minor “ups” relative to recent “downs” in some countries. Generally, outdoor copper telecom cable is being displaced by wireless and fiber. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago, there was some thought that the developing world would use more external copper telecom cable, and this would offset the slowdown in demand in developed economies, where the networks were largely complete (every building or home already linked by copper telecom cable), and where the future demand would be mainly new construction and replacement/ repair. But the developing world rapidly embraced mobile/cellular technology, and there are many places that never had copper telecom cable and may never get it, because cellular technology has proven so strong. In developed economies, the network expansions and upgrades will use more fiber than copper, or enhanced mobile/wireless technologies. So 1.) is down; 2.) has parts that go up and down with economic cycles, such as LAN cables for internal business networks, and 3.) is governed by a mix of factors, such as where fiber already has been adopted, how far into the network (how close to the customer), and how much money there is to spend on broadband upgrades.

cables makes a partial contributor to the growth in this segment, but the main driver is the increasing investment in new power generation and transmission facilities, such as wind farms. Aluminium cables often are used to connect wind turbines to the grid, and this is a relatively new and high-growth application sector.

C

The world’s optical cable market also is heavily influenced by developments in China, which represented 49% of the world market in 2013. The world total in 2013 was 253 million km of fiber installed in all types of communications networks. This was the first time annual demand has exceeded a quarter billion fibre-km. CRU completed its assessment of the 2013 optical cable market in February 2014 and published its findings in its Telecom Cables Market Outlook.

Metallic and optical cable markets show 3% to 4% annual growth in 2013 RU has completed its assessment of the insulated wire and cable market and the fibre optic cable market in 2013. Metallic wire and cable consumption was 3.1% higher in 2013 than in 2012. Optical cable consumption was up 3.6%. The metallic cable percentage is based on the quantity consumed in terms of conductor tones. The optical cable percentage is based on the amount of fibre in cable that was installed in communication networks during the year. The 2013 metallic cable market’s year-on-year growth rate was similar to the global market’s increase from 2011 to 2012, but lower than the 20-year historical average annual growth rate of 4.1%, going back to 1992. This conclusion is from the January edition of CRU’s Wire and Cable Market Outlook, a quarterly report with data on the world markets by region and cable type. Rob Daniels, CRU principal consultant and lead author of the Wire and Cable Market Outlook, said, “there was a slight upturn in the last quarter of 2013, but no major shocks considering the market’s performance as the year progressed.” Mr. Daniels noted that China’s growth in H2 2013 was better than market participants had expected, especially after a comparatively weak first half. Europe’s consumption of wire and cable, on the other hand, had been expected to show some improvement in the second half, but the region’s economy didn’t improve as hoped and cable demand for the full year fell short of earlier forecasts. For the full year, Europe’s cable market posted a negative yearon-year percent change in 2013, although the downturn was less severe than in 2012. The report’s data on cable types show that aluminium power cable had the strongest yearon-year growth in 2013 – 6% compared with the average of 3.1% for all cable types, based on conductor tonnes. The substitution of aluminium conductors for copper on power

The February report also says that the 3.6% growth in 2013 was the optical cable market’s lowest year-on-year growth since 2004. Patrick Fay, a CRU senior analyst and the lead author on the Telecom Cables report, said that in 2004, the optical cable market was recovering from a major multi-year collapse in telecom spending – basically a correction after significant overspending in the late 1990s, 2000, and 2001. As the recovery progressed from 2004 to 2012, demand in China and other key markets ramped up significantly. Mr. Fay noted that the growth in China’s market during 2009 was so strong that it offset the effects of the recession in the rest of the world, driving a double-digit annual growth rate in the 2009 worldwide optical cable total. Why did 2013 have a slowdown? Mr. Fay said that China’s growth was quite low, due to some delays on the part of the country’s telecom authority in issuing key licenses needed for building the 4G mobile networks. The licenses were not issued until December, and this in turn contributed to delays on the part of China Mobile, in placing orders for optical cable. Mr. Fay pointed out that China Mobile is not only China’s largest customer for optical cable but it also is the world’s largest customer. China Mobile accounted for about 40% of China’s 2013 optical cable consumption and 20% of the world’s total. Unlike the mobile networks in the US and other countries, China’s three mobile companies have used fibre throughout their networks to tie the cellular antennas together and for all terrestrial and backbone traffic. Other markets have a mix of fibre, copper, and microwave links in their cellular infrastructure.

Europe to see solid growth in demand for fire performance cable

T

he European economies and cable industry has struggled in recent years, hit by both the global financial crisis and the subsequent Euro financial crisis. After the economic crisis hit in 2008-2009, spending on infrastructure from stimulus packages in many countries softened the decline in cable demand. However, European countries subsequently reined in investment and major infrastructure projects experienced delays. As a result of cost cutting measures in public and private spending, the value of European & CIS wire & cable market in 2012 fell by 2.8% year-onyear, according to our Wire & Cable Data Service which tracks global and regional demand, supply, and trade of wire and cable. One area where cable makers are seeing growth however is the European fire performance cable market. Major fire incidents resulting in substantial human and financial loss, plus increased fire safety awareness and legislation mean that the fire performance of wire & cable is of high importance. Fire performance cable is defined as cable whose design and characteristics are enhanced in order to enable it to either react to fire in such a way as to reduce the loss of life or damage to buildings from fire (reaction to fire) or to continue operating during a fire (fire resistance). Fire performance cable is predominantly used in applications where the possibility and consequences of a fire are high such as in enclosed spaces, transport and also high performance environments, such as mining and military applications. Europe is the global leader in the development and production of fire performance cable and it has become an attractive market for companies to enter in order to increase sales in higher specification products where there is less competition and higher profit margins. Additionally, the introduction of new legislation means that the European fire performance market offers new and improved opportunities for market participants. Cable producers will find that there are new product categories that have higher margins and raw material suppliers are expected to increase the sales of products that increase the fire performance of cable designs. The introduction of harmonised fire performance cable standards has been the source of much uncertainty and contention in the European wire and cable industry for a number of years. The replacement of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) by the new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) means that since July

2013 the new legislation has made it mandatory for all construction products to be tested against harmonised EU standards and technical approvals. Under the CPR, cable manufacturers selling such cable into the EU will have to provide EU conformity declarations whereby the “reaction to fire” performance of their cable will be categorised according to different classes – the socalled “Euroclasses”. Integer Research tackles this complex topic in its recently completed European Fire Performance Cable Market Focus Report, providing an outlook for the fire performance cable market in Europe to 2018. The findings show that European fire performance cable production is projected to rise in line with growing demand over the period to 2018. Reaction to fire cable production is forecast to rise from €5.9 billion in 2012 to €7.2 billion in 2018, with significant growth from the top five economies. Integer also expects the fire resistant cable market to grow as the CPR increases the design requirements for many reaction to fire cables. This will be the biggest change in the market, prompting leading producers to adjust their product ranges as more and more regulations and buildings necessitate an increasingly complex mix of cables through to 2018. The addressable fire performance market is large and Integer expects the key target markets to be growing in countries such as Germany, Italy, France, UK, Sweden and Norway. In the construction sector, the non-residential market will be the main driver of demand with growing use in public access buildings, such as commercial offices and shopping centres. In the specialty sector, fire performance cable demand is projected to be strong in the aerospace, rolling stock and renewables markets. The fire performance cable market also offers the opportunity for exports outside of Europe, especially of higher specification cable and specialty products. In particular, there is potential to supply those countries that are influenced by European wire & cable standards. FTTH Council Europe and Europacable welcome EU Directive on Cost Reduction “The FTTH Council Europe welcomes the recent adoption by Parliament of the EU Directive on Measures to reduce the cost of deploying high-speed electronic communications networks” said Karin Ahl, President of the FTTH Council Europe. “It is an important and necessary step to reduce the costs of civil work for building new fibre networks. National Governments must implement the directive in an efficient and effective way so that it enables fibre projects to benefit from existing infrastructure like empty ducts and joint digging activities.” “If implemented stringently, the new directive will considerably reduce investment costs for broadband infrastructure. This will help to secure and improve Europe´s competiveness in the increasingly digitalised global competition of the 21st century. With that Europe sets the right priorities”, underlined Thomas Neesen, Secretary General of Europacable.

National Governments in Europe who have already taken action in this area, such as France and Spain, go some way beyond the proposed text and require fibre cabling to be deployed in new building and this option remains available who wish to make quicker progress to fibre to the home networks. The FTTH Council Europe hope that National Governments will use this Directive as a starting point and that all countries in Europe will move quickly to FTTH solutions. “The FTTH Council Europe and Europacable have been happy to participate in this important piece of legislation and congratulate all involved, particularly Edit Herczog, who championed the dossier in Parliament with support from Gunnar Hökmark’, added Hartwig Tauber, Director General of the FTTH Council Europe.

Europacable welcomes Council conclusions to develop new objectives on interconnection

E

uropacable welcomes the conclusions of the March European Council discussions on climate and energy strongly featuring the importance of improved electricity interconnection to facilitate the creation of the European energy market. In its conclusion, Council has requested new objectives on interconnection for 2030 to be developed: “The European Council invites the Commission to propose by June specific interconnection objectives to be attained until 2030 with a view to taking a decision at the latest by October 2014” Europacable sees this as a very positive development as it would ultimately provide investment security to the wire and cable industry in Europe which is standing by to provide and deploy the technologies needed.

in Düsseldorf: Strong Together for Future Markets!

he upward trend continues: The more than 2,500 international exhibitors from the wire, cable and tube industries can look back on five successful trade fair days. Inspired by the upswing of the steel market, the exhibiting companies presented their product innovations at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre during the two leading trade fairs, wire 2014 and Tube 2014. “The trade fairs took place at exactly the right time. Now several companies are planning on investing in order to position themselves for continued competition,” explained Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director accountable for the fairs at Messe Düsseldorf. “Once again, wire and Tube recorded exhibitor growth as well as a significant increase in booked exhibition space,” he continued with satisfaction. Networked worldwide and globally active, the exhibitors presented themselves to the 72,000 trade visitors that travelled to the exhibition halls on the Rhine from 104 different countries. They came to learn about the latest machines, equipment and products for the wire, cable and tube processing industries at the no. 1 international trade fairs, wire – International Wire and Cable Trade Fair and Tube – International Tube Trade Fair. “As world market leader in the steel tube industry with two plants in Düsseldorf, we believe it was the right decision to participate at Tube 2014 – for the second time in a row now after a long break,” summarizes

Verrillon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AFL, is launching VHS700 Series of Harsh Environment Single-mode Fibers featuring ultra-low bend loss for use in tight bend applications. Nexans announces world premiere in Essen - RWE integrates superconductor cable for the first time into existing power grid

RWE integrated on April 30, 2014, the world’s longest superconductor cable officially into Essen’s power grid, thus putting it into real operation for the first time. About a year after ground-breaking for the installation of the cable spanning a length of one kilometre, which connects two substations in Essen’s city centre, the field test is now starting for the future energy supply of inner cities. The particularly efficient and space-saving technology transports five times more electricity than conventional cables, almost without any losses. This pilot project by the name of AmpaCity had been made possible by grants of the German Federal

Economics Ministry for the Environment and Energy (BMWi). In fact, BMWi contributed € 5.9 million to the € 13.5 million invested in the project by RWE and its project partners. They are the cable manufacturer Nexans, that also designed a superconducting shortcircuit current limiter apart from the superconductor for the trial operation. Furthermore, AmpaCity is supported by the Karlsruhe-based Institute for Technology (KIT), providing scientific assistance to the field trial. The federal government justifies the research funding as a measure designed to meet the technological challenges posed by the energy transition for all players in the energy system. The AmpaCity pilot project was selected and supported by BMWi as an excellent contribution under the energy research program. Hannelore Kraft, Premier of the state of North RhineWestphalia, Nobel Prize laureate for physics, Dr. Johannes Georg Bednorz, who discovered the high-temperature super conductivity and numerous representatives from politics, industry, science and the project partner had come to the Herkules transformer station at Essen’s city centre to celebrate the commissioning today. “This is a good day for RWE, for the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia and the energy transition in Germany. The system has a design capacity of more than 3.2 terabits-per-second (Tbit/s), with the potential to be upgraded to more than 32 Tbit/s.

New contract worth approx. € 730 M for offshore wind farm grid connections in Germany Group’s leadership confirmed by fourteenth Offshore Wind Farm project awarded Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has been awarded by 50Hertz Offshore GmbH a subsidiary of 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, operator of transmission grids in Germany a new contract worth approximately up to € 730 million (including options for grid connections in value of approximately € 250 M) to design, produce and install the power cable systems for the offshore wind park cluster West of Adlergrund in the German Baltic Sea. The West of Adlergrund connection projects will involve the design, supply and installation of multiple high voltage submarine cable systems between planned Offshore Wind Parks, approximately 40 km north-east of the island of Ruegen, to the Lubmin substation in North East Germany (and consequently with the mainland electricity grid) along a route of approximately 90 km (submarine) and 3 km (land). The 220 kV HVAC (High Voltage Alternate Current) 3-core extruded cables (including fibre optic cable system) will be produced in the Group’s centres of technological and manufacturing excellence for submarine cables in Pikkala (Finland) and Arco Felice (Naples, Italy). Marine cable laying will be performed using the newly upgraded Cable Enterprise DP 2 ship specifically geared to use her particular expertise in

Revolutionary: RADOX® for fiber optics

T

he RADOX brand applies to HUBER+SUHNER’s specially developed insulation materials for low frequency cables, which are highly resistant to thermal, chemical, electrical and mechanical loads. Due to a new crosslinking process these properties, that are increasingly requested from customers, are now implemented also for fiber optic cables. The particular material properties are achieved through electron-beam crosslinking which connects the plastic molecules in a three-dimensional structure. RADOX materials withstand high temperature peaks and are resilient to bending in cold. They are resistant to liquids, abrasion, ozone and UV radiation. In addition, they are dimensionally stable, flexible, fire-resistant and have very low shrinkage. They are characterised by their long service life, making them ideal for harsh environmental conditions. New crosslinking process Such stringent requirements are increasingly being placed on fiber optic cables. It was previously impossible to cross-link fiber optics cables without metal shields sufficiently because the required intensity of irradiation impaired the optical transmission characteristics of the fiber. Specialists from HUBER+SUHNER have now developed a new production process for crosslinked fiber optic cables that prevents primary electrons reaching and impairing the fiber. This preserves the mechanical properties and service life of the fibers. Thus the optical transmission properties of RADOX fiber optic cables comply with ISO/IEC 11801 and IEC 60794-3-12 standards. For harsh environmental conditions RADOX loose tube cables combine all the strengths of traditional cables and surpass them in many properties – the perfect solution for demanding industrial and

CE-MARKING OF CABLES will soon be mandatory

ith effect from 1st July 2013, or as soon as an applicable product standard is available, construction products must be CE marked in accordance with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). Up until now, there has been no available product standard for cables, but work is now in progress by CENELEC (European Committee for Electro technical Standardisation) on producing such a standard. CENELEC TC20 has issued the following timetable for planned publication of CE marking documents:

prhEN 50575: This product standard for power, control and communication cables is planned for publication during Q2 2014. CE-marking of cables can start when this document is published.

EN 13501-6: This classification standard is planned for publication in Q1 2014, and will enable cables to be classified. An EN13501-6 report will provide the basis for CE- marking of cables in accordance with prhEN 50575.

prCLC/TS 50576: EXAP, planned for publication in Q4 2013. Application of this document will minimise the number of tests.

SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden has already accreditation for all the test standards mentioned in prhEN 50575 , which means that SP can perform these tests today. Manufacturers can therefore already obtain information on how their products will relate to the requirements in the new classification system for cables under CPR. SP can also help to minimise the number of fire tests that must be performed, by grouping cables in product families in accordance with the EXAP document (EXAP = Extended Application). Cape Wind awards Caldwell Marine International contract for offshore wind farm

Prysmian, €40 m contract for a new underwater power link in Ireland

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has been awarded a new contract worth in total approximately €40 million by ESB (Ireland), for the “Shannon River Crossing” project to provide electricity between Kilpaddoge and Moneypoint across the opposite banks of the river and along an underwater route of approximately 3 km. The project involves supply, installation and commissioning of a High Voltage Alternate Current (HVAC) 220 kV power cable double-circuit connection, comprising 21 km submarine cable including spare lengths and fibre optic connection, network components and commissioning services. The cables for the “Shannon River Crossing” project will be manufactured in the Pikkala plant (Finland), one of the Group’s centres of technological and manufacturing excellence for submarine cables.

Caldwell Marine International, a marine contractor specializing in submarine cable installation and heavy marine construction, announced that Cape Wind has awarded the company a contract for the installation of the underwater power cables for Cape Wind’s Massachusetts-based offshore wind farm. As America’s first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind will jump-start the development of a domestic offshore wind power industry, ultimately revitalizing local economies by adding thousands of well-paying jobs related to the construction, operations and maintenance of offshore wind farms. “We are proud to have been awarded this historic contract, which represents a major step forward in further developing this clean, renewable energy resource,” said Rolando Acosta, President of Caldwell Marine International. “This contract award shows that expertise and experience to install cables for offshore wind turbines exists right here in the U.S.” The power cables are a crucial element to the success of the project, as Cape Wind will be farther away from the nearest home than any other electricity generation facility in Massachusetts. Cape Wind will consist of 130 offshore wind turbines off of the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, each one driven 80 feet into the sandy seabed.

Underwater cable installation will be performed by one of the Group’s own laying vessels, Cable Enterprise, specialised in operations in extremely shallow waters and in offshore wind farm connections. The vessel is currently undergoing upgrade works to be converted from a moored cable laying barge to a DP2 ship that will allow the vessel to operate autonomously without the need of tugs during cable operations. Project completion is scheduled in early 2016.

Prysmian, € 30 m contract in Abu Dhabi

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has been awarded a new contract worth approximately € 30 Million by UAE-based construction company Emirates Holding on behalf of major offshore oil and gas producer ADMAOPCO (Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company) for the design and manufacture of submarine cable links for the replacement of power feeding systems to Zakum offshore oil field, in Abu Dhabi. The Zakum oil field is the first submarine electrification project planned by ADMA-OPCO and will be the benchmark for future projects aimed at developing and implementing a power distribution and transmission network among owned offshore oil fields, in order to increase capacity and improve reliability of their oil production facilities. The project will be implemented by the Group’s established offices in the UAE, using production from Pikkala (Finland) with first 70 km batch delivery in November 2014 and final delivery due by mid-2015.

Prysmian secures Borwin3 project worth in excess of € 250 m

The Zakum project provides further confirmation of the validity of the Group’s know-how and technologies for application both in submarine power transmission and distribution and in the Oil and Gas industry. This new project also reconfirms Prysmian’s leadership role in a strategic region like the Middle East, where the Group can rely on a number of projects completed or currently ongoing including the Barzan oil field submarine power interconnection in Qatar, the firstever submarine power transmission link serving Doha, the GCC SaudiBahrain submarine interconnection and the 400 kV power transmission system for TRANSCO connecting the Bahia and Saadiyat Grid Stations in Abu Dhabi.

The project involves supply, installation and commissioning of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) 320 kV extruded submarine and land power bipole connection with a rating of 900 MW and associated fibre optic cable system, comprising of a 29 km land route and of a subsea route of 130 km. The power link will run from the land based converter station at substation Emden Ost in Lower Saxony to the converter platform BorWin gamma in the BorWin cluster, located approximately 120 km North of Germany.

Marine cable route survey contract for Svenska kraftnät, Swedish national grid

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, has been awarded a major project worth in excess of € 250 million by the DutchGerman grid operator TenneT for the grid connection of offshore wind farms in Germany.

MMT has been awarded the contract for the Själland cable survey between Denmark and Sweden by Svenska kraftnät. Svenska kraftnät and their Danish counterpart Energinet. dk are the transmission system owners and operators of a 400 kV High Voltage AC cable system across the Öresund, between Sweden and Denmark. The cable system will be exchanged due to its technical lifetime. MMT has recently been awarded the contract for a cable route survey, with the purpose of investigating and verifying the feasibility of the new submarine cable route. This marine cable route survey covers geophysical information such as bathymetry, surface geology and sub-bottom conditions. MMT will also perform a geotechnical investigation, cable tracking and identification of cable crossings.

Coordination of the ‘BorWin3’ project execution will be from Prysmian offices in Hamburg, using production from the Group’s centres of technological and manufacturing excellence in Pikkala (Finland) and Gron (France). Marine cable laying will be performed also using the newly upgraded Cable Enterprise DP 2 ship specifically geared to use at best her particular expertise in offshore wind farm connections in the North Sea to better serve the growing markets in Northern Europe and to provide highly complex installation solutions. Completion of the HVDC system installation is scheduled by October 2017.

Cables will be installed through environmentally significant natural areas both on land and at sea, including along the Ems estuary. This is the second grid connection project awarded by TenneT to follow this route (the route runs directly parallel to the DolWin3 project the Group was awarded last year) and highlights Prysmian’s ability to provide tailor-made installation solutions addressing and customer specifications and needs in conjunction with stringent environmental requirements.

The offshore operations will be performed from MMT´s survey and ROV vessel Icebeam and the coastal surveys from the survey vessel Seabeam. The operations will start in spring 2014.

Because of the Superior Properties of a New Styrenic TPE Series in the Medalist® Range from Teknor Apex, Minnesota Wire Is Using the Compounds Commercially to Replace TPVs Minnesota Wire, a specialist in the custom design and production of cable assemblies for medical devices, has replaced the thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) elastomers that are standard in such applications with new styrenic thermoplastic elastomer (TPE-S) compounds from Teknor Apex Company, citing better performance initially and after autoclaving, superior processing, and an enhanced look and feel in the end product. The TPE-S compounds, Medalist® MD-8421, MD8431, and MD-8451, comprise a series within Teknor Apex’s Medalist product range, a diversified family of high-purity medical elastomers that also includes other TPE types, among them TPVs. At MD&M West, Teknor Apex will present data on the new compounds in a new white paper available at its exhibit during MD&M (Booth 2532). Also exhibiting at the show, Minnesota Wire will be available to answer questions about its use of the new materials (Booth 1743). “We’ve tested the new Medalist compounds and found them to have better tensile and elongation properties than TPVs before autoclaving and to retain more of these properties after multiple autoclave cycles—an important advantage in the many medical devices intended for reuse,” said Jeff Lewison, design engineer at Minnesota Wire. “In addition, the Medalist compounds are more stable in extrusion, and in injection molding their improved processability means that we can lower the pressures to reduce the likelihood of defects when we’re molding over delicate circuitry. Customers will like the fact that our product just looks and feels better.” Enhanced electrical properties is another advantage of the new Medalist compounds cited by Mr. Lewison. “We can run cables with thinner walls, which enables them to coil better, and the improved electricals enable us to use these compounds in insulation as well as jacketing.”

Peace of mind for utilities and their customers means that power is always there at the flick of a switch or the push of a button. System reliability is a top priority. The benefits of UG installation can be game-changing in reducing or eliminating outages due to severe weather, vandalism or other physical threats, reduced maintenance versus overhead lines (OHL) and in lower total ownership cost over the life of the cable. “The concept of intelligent undergrounding is simply this: to bury cable where and when it makes sense – even in combination with OHL,” said Damien Polansky, Global Strategic Marketing Director, Dow Electrical & Telecommunications. “In addition to threats like weather, theft and high maintenance costs, UG cable installation should be considered where there is large congestion of OHL, areas of aesthetic or scenic interest, or near streets and roads with a high volume of traffic.” Quality practices are crucial to cable reliability – from raw materials through compounding and cable manufacturing. In North America (NA) alone, transmission cables made with DOW ENDURANCE™ HV compounds have been installed in 324 projects managed by 70+ utilities and municipalities over the past 15 years, for a total of more than 7 million feet of UG electric infrastructure. And, as reported by the manufacturer, there have been zero cable failures to date. It also means that cable manufacturers have high levels of working capital stuck in inventory. The inventory turnover in days (ITID) for cable manufacturers (107 days) is 50% higher than average for the manufacturing industry. This notion has an impact deep in the supply chain. This means that we require 1,150m lengths of conductors, which we can produce by stranding 7 wires of 1,200m. The system will not only create these planned orders, but also ensures full traceability throughout the chain of orders, from the purchased copper rod (or raw fiber), to the finished cable. Highlights from the industry Alstom T&D India to optimise grid operations for North-East India

Alstom T&D India has secured a €8.4 million contract from POWERGRID to expand and upgrade the energy management system of India’s various control centres in North East India: North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NERLDC) and seven other Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs). The project includes supply, installation, test and commission of 87 remote terminal units (RTUs) and 9 Control Centres. RTUs are intelligent devices that collect data from remote locations to enhance network visibility for grid operators. Meanwhile, Alstom’s e-terraplatform software solution analyses the data to help grid operators take decisions in real-time, and enhance grid security. The NERLDC system operator can thus anticipate abnormalities and prevent costly outcomes, such as a blackout. Rathin Basu, Managing Director of Alstom T&D

ET Solar completes a 7.8 MWp PV power plant in Israel for EDF

Bel agrees to acquire power-one power solutions from ABB for US$117 million

Bel Fuse Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Power-One Power Solutions business of ABB Ltd. Bel will pay approximately US$117 million in cash to acquire the Power Solutions business, which had 2013 revenue of approximately US$251 million. The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014 and to be immediately accretive to Bel’s earnings.

Updates from the industry Vertex is leading partner in the development of a 30-megawatt solar electric project in Zacatecas, Mexico

The Vertex Companies, Inc. is a leading partner in the development of a 30-megawatt solar electric power plant located in Zacatecas, Mexico. When complete, this project will be one of the largest of its kind in Latin America. The announcement came during a reception held as part of the Massachusetts – Mexico Innovation Partnership Mission. The joint announcement was made by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Zacatecas Governor Miguel Alonso Reyes. VERTEX has operated for over a decade in the Mexican market as Vertex Ingenieros Consultores, S. de R.L. de C.V., completing dozens of energy and environmental projects in a variety of industries. VERTEX has consulted for both US and Mexican businesses including Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico’s governmentowned utility. In Zacatecas, VERTEX is collaborating with local Mexican partners to develop the first utility-scale solar PV project in the state and one of the largest in Latin America overall. The 30 MW ZacSol 1 project is the first phase of up to 90 MW that will be installed near the municipality of Guadalupe over the next several years. With an estimated US$92 million investment in Zacatecas that will create approximately 400 construction and operational jobs, this first phase represents a significant step forward for Mexico in realizing their solar potential.

Abengoa is awarded two new electricity transmission projects for the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency

Abengoa has been selected by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency for a new electricity transmission project in Brazil. The contract, which is worth approximately €381 million, will enable part of the country’s energy demand to be supplied in an efficient and sustainable way. Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, design, construction, maintenance and commissioning of the two transmission lines, which will cover 377 kilometers (km), ensuring the highest levels of quality at every stage. Both lines are expected to come into operation in 2017.

The first concession relates to a 240 km transmission line from Oriximina–Juruti and Juruti–Parintins in the state of Para as well as construction of four substations in the municipalities of Oriximina, Juruti, Parintins and Jurupari. The second concession includes the 137 km Parauapebas–Integradora Sossego, Integradora Sossego–Xinguara II transmission line and three substations.

ABB to supply electric power plant and propulsion units for a Finnish icebreaker

ABB, a global leader in power and automation technology, has secured a new order to supply electric power plant and Azipod propulsion units for one ice breaker vessel built for Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard. The competitive bidding was done between several suppliers. Due for delivery in 2016 and set for operation in the Baltic Sea, the new vessel is featuring dual fuel capability, and as such will be the first icebreaker in operation able to run using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel, cutting both emissions and fuel cost. In fact, the concept designers at Aker Arctic Technology and ILS were instructed to select the industry’s most advanced technologies to meet icebreaking conditions in the Baltic Sea year-round, and to perform open sea oil spill response and towing duties in summer and winter. Basic design of the vessel is done by Arctech. Once operational, the new vessel is expected to attract worldwide attention to Finnish arctic expertise. Central to the vessel’s performance expectations will be its three-pod propulsion solution, with a 6MW Azipod unit at the bow and two 6.5MW units at the stern included to optimize efficiency and maneuverability in ice-ridge conditions in particular. “The safety of seaborne transport in the Baltic Sea is under political and regulatory scrutiny as never before, making FTA’s preference for ABB’s power and propulsion

Saipem has been awarded from BP a US $1.8 billion contract for work on the supermajor’s huge Shah Deniz 2 gas field

Saipem has won a new offshore Engineering & Construction contract in Azerbaijan, for a total amount of approximately US$1.8 billion. BP, on behalf of the Shah Deniz consortium, has awarded to the Saipem, Bos Shelf and Star Gulf consortium, a Transportation and Installation contract for the Stage 2 development of the Shah Deniz field. The field is located 90 kilometers offshore Azerbaijan, in water depths from 75 meters to 550 meters. The scope of work of the contract includes the transportation and installation of jackets, topsides and subsea production systems and subsea structures, the laying of over 360 km pipelines, diving support services and the upgrade of the Pipelay Barge Israfil Huseinov (PLBH), Dive Support Vessel Tofiq Ismailov (DSV) and Derrick Barge Azerbaijan (DBA) installation vessels. The project will be completed by the end of 2017.

Technip awarded contract for the extension of subsea infrastructure on Alvheim field in North Sea

Technip was awarded by Marathon Oil Norge a contract for the extension of subsea infrastructure on the Alvheim field, located on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The scope of work includes installation engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and tie-in of spools and protection covers as well as installation of one manifold. The subsea operations will mainly be performed with divers at a water-depth of approximately 120 meters in this area.

Kentz awarded a further US$570m contract for the Ichthys LNG Project

Kentz Corporation Limited, the holding company of the Kentz engineering and construction group, is pleased to announce the award of an US$570m contract to it’s Australian subsidiary for the Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) construction packages for the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities in Darwin, Australia. This contract was awarded by JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd (JKC), a joint venture between JGC Corporation, KBR and Chiyoda Corporation. JKC is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the Ichthys LNG Project’s onshore facilities, including the gas processing plant at Blaydin Point. Aquaterra Energy wins Premier Oil Catcher Drill Centre Template contract

Aquaterra Energy has been awarded a contract to design and build six Drill Centre Templates (DCT) for Premier Oil’s Catcher Development in the UK North Sea. The complete DCT contract is worth up to £10 million. The contract was awarded following pre-qualification and tender management by the Aquaterra Energy sales and design teams, and after successful completion by Aquaterra Energy of a similar project for Premier in Vietnam. Eric Doyle, Regional Director – Europe at Aquaterra Energy, said: “This is an extremely prestigious contract and plays to our strength in delivering the full project scope from design and structural analysis, through procurement, fabrication, assembly and finally loadout. The project will be led by our dedicated team in Aberdeen, with the specialist support of our engineering and technical teams in Norwich.”

Clough awarded contract by Arrow Energy

AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, today announced that the Clough AMEC joint venture has been awarded a AU$ 20 million (£11 million) engineering procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for Arrow Energy’s Daandine Expansion Project in South-East Queensland, Australia. The contract scope will include the expansion of the existing central gas processing facility with three new reciprocating gas-driven compressors and associated process and utility plant, increasing the current total number of wells in the Daandine gas field by 22. Production will be increased by modifications to existing infrastructure and the installation of additional infrastructure. The contract is set to run to the end of 2015. “AMEC is delighted to be working closely with Arrow Energy and Clough on this significant project for Queensland,” said Steve Ciccone, AMEC Regional Director, Australia East. “We will draw on our considerable engineering expertise in the Australian Coal Seam Gas industry to help Arrow achieve their long term objectives for the Daandine project, safely and sustainably.”
