FERGUSON NORGE PROVIDES SUPPORT TO OFFSHORE INDUSTRY

Ferguson Norge, specialists in the rental of DNV 2.7-1 / EN 12079 certified offshore containers, refrigeration/ freezer modules, NORSOK workspace modules and accommodation solutions to the global offshore energy industry, has expanded its fleet of tanks and waste skips to meet customer demand.

W

orking offshore is always challenging but the extreme weather conditions of the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Area, make greater demands on equipment. Ferguson Norge is mindful of this and its product range is designed to be easy to handle. The sealed waste units, also known as mud skips, have built in features which make them particularly easy to stack and transport. A light aluminum lid can be closed easily, so wherever the waste is being transported, it can be done safely and efficiently. The 6 tonne sealed waste units are low profile, especially convenient for accessing low discharge points. Also available are cargo and drum baskets, dry goods containers, both full and half height, FIBC and tanks, for transportation or storage. Ferguson Norge also adapts containers for specific equipment requirements to meet client needs. Attention to detail and willingness to listen to customers has driven Ferguson Norge’s expansion of its tank fleet. Having successfully supplied helifuel and chemical tanks, Ferguson Norge is now expanding its tank fleet to include acid and cryogenic tanks. Helifuel is essential for offshore working and Ferguson

Norge’s helifuel tanks are designed and manufactured to DNV 2.7-1/EN 12079 standards. They are T7 portable 316L stainless steel tanks approved IMDG/ADR/RID with a capacity of 4,000ltrs. The tanks have a working pressure of 2.67 bar and a discharge of 3” BSP, fitted with a remote vent value and level indication.

New 10ft Cryogenic tanks

The new 10ft cryogenic tanks, have a 7,901 ltr capacity, designed for the transportation and storage of liquefied industrial gases, complete with a tough steel cover, and an inner stainless steel core. This supports a superinsulated vacuum that maintains the gases in their lower temperature liquid form, for longer. The cryogenic tanks can be used in well, pipeline and process services, and have been specially designed with crash frames to take the rigors of offshore usage. The cryogenic tanks have a 25 day hold time for liquid nitrogen, ensuring it operates at maximum efficiency, even when they are travelling to some of the world’s remotest locations. For ease of use they have been designed with dual try-cock valves, rather than the standard single valve systems and the lower roof plates allow them to be moved with their slings/shackles in position.

CLIENT FEATURE The New Acid Tank Fleet

The new acid tanks being added to the fleet are T14 UN portable tanks, approved IMDG, ADR, RID for use hydrochloric and other acids. With a 4 bar working pressure, they have been designed to discharge only from the top for safety and they are lined for compatibility with a wide range of acids. The 6,000ltr tank is configured vertically within its frame. The chemical tanks currently come in two sizes; 2,900ltrs and 4,000ltrs and are T7/T11 UN portable tanks, approved under IMDG/ADR/RID. Each tank has a 2.67/4 bar and are fitted with a remote vent valve and level gauge/dip stick. For safety they are fitted with an anti slip ladder and flush mounted roof grating.

New and Unique Chemical Tanks

The new 20ft DNV chemical tanks have a 20,000ltr capacity and are Type 11 approved under IMDG, ADR and RID. Although primarily used for the transportation and storage of liquid chemicals offshore, they can

also be used for returns from the well, hydraulic and turbine oils, potable and produced water. The stainless steel tank is -40°C rated and has a 4”NPT outlet and 4”butterfly valve with recirculation line that can be used either as a fill line or for recirculating the fluid in the tank.

The new 10 feet DNV tank has an 8,000ltr capacity. It is rated T11 UN portable tank approved IMDG, ADR, RID and has a four bar working pressure. The 316L steel is rated for use to -40°C and has a remote vent gauge and level guard, alongside its 3” BSP outlet. It also contains a steam heating system for heating chemicals inside the tanks and D-rings for safety harness attachment. FIBC containers are designed to transport two IBC chemical carriers. They have as standard multiple internal tie down points and cargo nets to ensure safety of the materials being transported and working personnel. In addition, they offer attachment points on the roof for a safer working environment. There is also a range of NORSOK accredited workshops and A60 workspace modules, and DNV2.7-1/EN 12079 accredtied accommodation module, that cover a wide variety of uses. In response to market demand, ACE Winches Norge AS is expanding its product and service range to the Scandinavian market.

he company has secured quayside premises at Karmsund Service Base in addition to its current facilities in Dusavik, Stavanger.

The Karmsund base opening in August 2014, will double the current workforce of ACE Winches Norge AS over a six-month period. Specialists will also be onsite from the ACE Hire Personnel and ACE Services divisions to conduct a variety of winch operations and refurbishment works respectively.

The central location in the sheltered straits of Karmsundet is strategically positioned for vessels travelling across the North Sea and hosts a number of other companies servicing the offshore industry, which will compliment the ACE Winches product and service range. The equipment can be mobilised from the quayside location, reducing logistics challenges and costs faced by operators as it provides faster mobilisations and demobilisations. ACE Manufacturing’s turnkey design, manufacture and installation works add bespoke alternatives to the hire fleet units, as well as several additional products including umbilical reelers, active heave compensation, and electric and pneumatic drive systems. Reel Drive Systems Karmsund will deliver a new major product line which has been recently developed by ACE Winches’ dedicated Research and Development team. ACE Engineers have recently completed the design of a 400te Reel Drive System (RDS), the first of a range to be available for hire to clients.

CLIENT FEATURE ACE Reel Drive Systems are designed and manufactured for use in controlled, high tension deployment and recovery applications of various reel spooled subsea, umbilical, riser and flowline (SURF) products. The system incorporates two hydraulically driven hubs that interlock and support the reel using a slave and master configuration to deploy or recover the SURF product. Drive systems are configured to ensure that ACE RDS units are capable of providing substantial tension during deployment and recovery operations. A pin locking mechanism allows for height adjustment of the drive train to enable the control of reels with different diameters. As with all ACE Winches equipment, RDS units are manufactured with due consideration to the harsh environments encountered in marine applications, and suitable protective measures have been incorporated as ACE Manufacturing standard. In addition the units are built in modular components for ease of transportation, mobilisation and assembly. The first RDS unit is currently in production and will be ready for operation by September 2014 with immediate long term contracts already secured. ACE Winches’ complete Reel Drive Systems range will include units from 150te to 500te capacities which, as standard, will be supplied with the required reels, built in HPU’s, modular track system and supporting personnel for global installation and recovery operations of SURF products. Installation and Workover Control Systems Service to another market sector will be strengthened from the new Karmsund facility through the bespoke design and manufacture of installation and workover control system (IWOCS) units. ACE Manufacturing will continue to deliver customised solutions for well intervention operations with several recently completed orders of umbilical reelers and ancillary equipment. ACE Umbilical Reelers are designed and manufactured to deploy and recover various hydraulic, electrical and fibre optic umbilical products, and to provide the necessary control signals and connections to subsea equipment required during a well installation or workover. Units are delivered with hydraulic, electric or pneumatic driven systems. A corresponding slip ring or stab plate configuration transfers the connections from the reeler drum to the IWOC control system. Producing oil and gas from deepwater is becoming more essential to the energy industry By: John Morrison

D

eepwater subsea infrastructure includes many key subsea systems and components, connecting wells, manifolds and subsea templates to flow lines, pipelines and risers, which are then connected to the production vessel. Subsea developments are both shallow and deepwater, and although producing oil and gas from deepwater is not new to the industry, it is becoming more essential as the operators are forced to explore and then produce deeper and harder to reach oil targets. The complexity of the infrastructure can depend on the amount of wells needing drilled and then produced, and can start with one satellite, to a much larger template of up to 8 wells being linked together, then pumped up to the production vessel.

‘underwater system’ has meant that manufacturers are beginning to come up with new systems and equipment cut out for high pressures and high temperatures within the harsh, deep environment, at greater risk. The subsea infrastructure itself however, is much more financially economical than previous topside solutions, and this has seen a shift from topside to subsea, meaning a demand for new subsea production equipment, such as power, separation, injection, boosting and compression, as well as the vessels and underwater equipment required to install and connect it all together.

NEWS IN DEPTH Huge fleets are required for one development alone, and demand for underwater vehicles is becoming high, meaning the manufacture and construction of both OSVs and ROVs is on the increase. Technology firms have stepped up to the challenge of this necessity and are coming up with new ways to control, intervene, monitor and communicate with the infrastructure, which can all be managed from the production vessel, sometimes without using a Riser, OSV and in some inspection and monitoring instances an ROV; all helping reduce the costs. Subsea umbilical manufacturers are now able to get electrical, hydraulic, chemical injection and fiber optic connections down to the infrastructure and are the lifeline. The umbilical can also bring data and communication back up to the topside, providing important information on what is happening subsea. With deepwater, there has been a huge shift in communications from copper to fibre, due to fibre allowing data to travel further, with less interference and loss. There has also been new ways of being able to retrofit or adapt existing copper connections to fibre. Getting it wrong with testing and reliability has seen subsea developments economically fail, meaning testing of all equipment is critical for success, and stringent standards apply; the more quality the manufacture and testing of a product, the better. Reliability can also be down to the suppliers being timely, not allowing delays and essentially adding further costs to the project. Competition is sometimes, therefore, very high, even with the most niche and un-saturated of product markets. Onshore verification testing can be done virtually to avoid any failures during the system application, which reduces costs, due to the systems being tested using similar conditions to offshore applications, as well as being able to analyse the systems’ behaviour, during

production and distribution. Manufacturing and service firms are also expanding to adopt their own in-house testing, to provide their own stamp of approval before being put into application, due to quality becoming ever more important in qualifying and winning contracts. For the operators, lessons from the past have seen inspection, maintenance and monitoring become a must, so that they are prepared for incidents, along with the reassurance that the development is operating safely and efficiently; Asset Integrity Management is now essential. To do this, operators will require technology, which has its own challenges from the technology firms’ point of view; operators may sometimes be reluctant when confronted with new technological developments. Service companies are the main adopters of technology, and are even willing to buy firms coming up with new innovations. New conferences, one-to-one meetings, forums and lunch and learns are just some of the ways that technology firms are making inroads into the operators, as they face the challenges of recovering oil from mature and new deepwater developments during a period of stagnant oil economics. It is no doubt that the pending decline of mature brownfield developments will force many into adopting the technology direct - taking the risks on for themselves, however the cost of R&D may sometimes become a factor. So in an ever changing world, with oil and gas exploration and production offshore in the UK and Norway heading further into the deep, we are seeing a change from topside production to subsea. Being closer to the wells, along with an increase in efficiency will no doubt increase recovery, however quality is becoming ever more important, due to high maintenance costs and environmental risks.

The Norwegian Shelf moves towards an unpredictable profitable future By: Ioannis Tzelepis

N

orway is Western Europe’s largest crude producer with the oil and gas industry, accounting for more than a fifth of the country’s gross domestic product. However, according to the nation’s statistics agency, oil and gas companies operating in Norway expect to invest during 2014, 174.5 billion kroner, an amount which represents a 16 percent drop from 2013’s estimated figures. Furthermore, the state controlled Statoil ASA, which is responsible for more than 70 percent of Norway’s oil and gas output, has announced its plans to reduce spending by 8 percent for the three years starting from 2016. Norway, which has seen a 20 percent drop in oil and gas production during the past decade, has also experienced a 10 percent increase in costs per year during the same period, creating challenging investment conditions for the oil and gas companies.

sustaining increasing production volumes every year since 1993, through the development of new fields in to the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). In general, the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) includes three main petroleum basins, the North Sea basin located southwest of Norway, the Norwegian Seas basin which covers the northwest part in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea which expands into the far north of the country. Despite the fact that exploration effort has been made in all three areas, the geological knowledge of them differs significantly, as from the roughly counted 1,000 wells drilled on the NCS, the Barents Sea for example accounted for just over 100 till the end of 2010. Large parts of all three petroleum basins have been opened for oil and gas activities for decades but there are still extensive areas offshore Norway which remain closed to petroleum operations.

On top of that, the Norwegian petroleum and natural gas industry have demonstrated a change of routes over the past few years. According to EIA estimations, in 2013 Norway produced 1.8 million barrels per day (bbl/d) of petroleum and other liquids with the petroleum production showing a gradual decrease since 2001.

On the other hand, the gas industry has been characterized by a different trend with the country

These include the whole of Barents Sea North, Troms II, Nordland VII, parts of Nordland VI, near-shore areas off Nordland County and the Skagerrak strait between Norway and Denmark. On the above basis, the Norwegian government announced on February 2014 that it will offer 61 blocks for oil and gas exploration for

NEWS IN DEPTH field has attracted much attention, as it includes two structures (the Johan Castberg and Havis) in one development, while it is also considered a breakthrough in the northern areas. However, the impact of this new trend towards active exploratory effort in new areas, as well as the discovery of significant resources in the Norwegian and North Sea acreages has been outweighed by the impact of the 2013 reform in petroleum taxation. In 2013, the Norwegian oil and gas industry received Graph of Top Gas Producing Fields, by Ioannis Tzelepis its 23rd licensing round on the NCS with the 54 out of the 61 blocks located in the Barents Sea. The Far North acreage in the NCS, expanding over the Barents Sea, is considered a priority area for the Norwegian petroleum industry, with major exploration activity expected to take place in this region over the next few years. These far northern waters of the NCS are characterized by extreme arctic natural conditions and lack of existing infrastructure, which shape new challenges related to technological and operational liabilities established under the existing health and safety procedures. With no fixed surface facilities installed there yet, it has become a necessity for the oil and gas players to bring the Goliat project online as soon as possible, due to the only other development in this region, Snøhvit, being entirely subsea. Additionally, Eni and Statoil, who are the respective operators of these fields, need to cope with the long distances with the rescue and evacuation capacity being limited. Currently the operational range of the purchased aircrafts is 340 kilometres from land, while the northernmost location under exploratory investigation expands to more than 450 kilometres offshore, as the intermediate refuelling appears as the sole solution if the northernmost parts of the Barents Sea are to be served. In terms of the already explored areas, the discovery of the Johan Sverdrup field has instilled confidence regarding the future of the North Sea basin. The field which is expected to produce between 550,000 and 650,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak is also characterized by a production horizon which extends beyond 2050. On the other hand, the Norwegian Sea basin includes some promising but ultimatley demanding projects such as the Aasta Hansteen gas discovery in the Vøring area, which is located far from land and outside the established infrastructure and the Valemon field with complex reservoir due to high-temperature qualities.

a serious hit when the previous Labor-led government announced in April 2013 a new bill that limited the four-year exemptions on ‘so-called’ free cash flow to 22 percent from 30 percent, also raised the special petroleum tax to 51 percent from 50 percent, while keeping the top taxation level at 78 percent. Under this newly established regulatory framework, the overall taxes on oil companies were increased by about 3 billion kroner (US$520 million) a year, as the European debt crisis and the strengthening krone started to have an impact on the oil and gas giant. The Norwegian government in its effort to cover loopholes in the petroleum taxation and thrive more efficiently the benefits of its abundant natural resources, is said to jeopardize at the same time 13 billion of drilling programs. This new economic policy has been regarded as extremely unfavourable to EOR projects and marginal new developments, with Statoil already stating that it needs to delay its Johan Castberg oil project. Meanwhile Royal Dutch Shell also puts on hold the development of the Linnorm gas field in the Norwegian Sea. At the same time the fact that that the new Conservativeled government has expressed its belief that it is important to shield some major projects from the previous administration’s tax reform, might be conceived as discriminatory policy and threatens to unbalance the competitiveness of the Norwegian shelf. The upcoming years are going to be crucial for the country, with major projects expected to come online in the next three years and influential changes predicted to be made in the foundations of the oil and gas regulation, to capture a larger portion of the economic rent from the oil and gas activities in the NCS.

PROJECT PROFILE DETAILS The Asta Hansteen discovery is located in the Norwegian Sea, roughly 186miles from land, northwest of Sandnessjoen in Nordland country. Asta Hansteen was discovered in 1997 and the well was plugged and abandoned as a gas find with oil shows. One year later, the Transocean Leader semisub drilled an appraisal well 6706/12-1 to a total depth of 12,956 feet (3,949 metres), and confirmed the find was a discovery. Recovering the resources on Aasta Hansteen will be demanding, due to the discovery being located far from land and outside of the established infrastructure. The water depth is significant and the weather conditions are challenging. The Plan for development and operations was submitted to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy at the end of December 2012.

OPERATORS Statoil is the main operator of the Aasta Hansteen discovery. Currently Statoil has a 75% interest; OMV holds 15% interest and Conoco Phillips with 10% interest.

PROJECT UPDATES Hyundai lands contracts for Spar Platform Hyundai Heavy Industries has awarded Kvaerner a subcontract to provide services for the onshore and offshore hook-up and commissioning assistance for the topsides for the Aasta Hansteen project. The work on the project will be done both onshore and offshore. The onshore work will take place at Stord and is set to be ongoing during the first half of 2016, whilst the platform is moored at Kvaerner’s deep water site in Digernussundet, close to Kvaerner’s offshore yard at Stord. The offshore work however, is set to be carried out at the field itself in the Norwegian Sea which is 300 km west of Bodø. Currently, Hyundai is executing the scope on both the substructure and the topside for the Aasta Hansteen Spar platform. The two platform parts will be transported from South Korea to Stord in Norway on separate heavy lift vessels. In January 2014 Kvaerner was awarded a sub-contract from Technip, who is doing the engineering for the Spar platform’s substructure. This contract includes providing services and assistance to Technip during mooring, upending, ballasting, installation of predefined equipment and preparation of the Aasta Hansteen Spar for mating with the topside. The contract partner is Kvaerner’s subsidiary Kværner Stord AS. Hyundai targets to have the Aasta Hansteen Spar platform ready and prepared for a tow-out in the summer of 2016, with the mechanical work on the project not far behind, as this is set to be completed by late 2016.

Telecommunication systems order worth US$60 million won by ABB

NEWS IN BRIEF New Spar Platform

The platform is being built for Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen field off the coast of Norway and will feature Wärtsilä’s Inert Gas and Nitrogen Generator systems. The contract was issued in the first quarter 2014 by Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea, the yard building the platform. The Wärtsilä Inert Gas Generator will utilise titanium in its construction, the first time ever that this material has been used in such a system. Titanium was preferred due to its superior corrosion resistance in relation to sea water.

Lankhorst Ropes to supply mooring lines

The HHITECH consortium (Hyundai Heavy Industries and Technip) has contracted Lankhorst Ropes to supply the mooring lines for Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen spar platform in the Norwegian Sea. Lankhorst claims this is the largest-ever single order for deepwater mooring ropes, and possibly the largest for synthetic fiber rope. Lankhorst will manufacture the ropes at its factory in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

First Subsea wins contract for Hyundai and Technip

The contract is for the supply of mooring line connectors for Statoil’s Spar platform in the Aasta Hansteen gas field. The Spar platform will be moored with 17 Series III Ballgrab subsea mooring connectors at 1,300 m (4,290 ft) water depth approximately 300 kilometres west of Bodø in northern Norway. The connector’s male mandrels are manufactured in compliance with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) 2009 Approval for specialist subsea mooring connectors. First Subsea is the only manufacturer of offshore mooring connectors to achieve ABS type approval for the design and manufacture of large-scale forgings over 500mm in diametre.

ABB has won three orders worth US$60 million for new internal and external telecommunication systems on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. These exclusive orders were booked in on the fourth quarter of 2013 and in the first quarter of 2014. All three of the contracts are signed with leading reputable shipyards in South Korea. ABB will form the role of system integrator of telecommunications on the offshore installations built for the Aasta Hansteen and Gina Krog fields in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea and for the Mariner field in the British sector.

DETAILS The Gina Krog field development is a gas, condensate and oil field which is located in the Norwegian central part of the North Sea, around 30 kilometres northwest of Sleipner. The discovery will be developed to the Sleipner field. Gina Krog (previously named the Dagny), was originally a minor gas discovery north of Sleipner and has been considered for development on a number of occasions since its discovery in 1974. When oil and gas were proven in the nearby structure Gina Krog Ă˜st (previously Dagny) in 2007, the Gina Krog landscape was revisited for review. Further delineation during the period 2008 to 2011 determined a contact between Gina Krog and Gina Krog Ă˜st and confirmed large volumes of oil under the entire structure.

OPERATORS

Statoil stands as the current operator with 58.7%, with an additional 100% interest in PL303, 78.2% interest in PL048 and 50% interest in PL029B in the project, followed by Total who has 38.0% who also holds additional interests with 21.8% interest in PL048, 100% interest in PL029C and 30% interest in PL029B and Det norske oljeselskap ASA who holds a smaller interest of 3.3% in the field and the following 20% interest in PL029B.

Installation of Riser system won by DOF Subsea DOF Subsea has been awarded a contract for installation of the Turret Mooring and Riser system for the Gina Krog FSO by Teekay Shipping Norway AS. The work includes installation of 12 suction anchors complete with chain/wires, STL buoy hook-up, and installation of riser system for the Gina Krog FSO. The onshore engineering is set to start in the second half of 2014 with offshore marine operations to be executed in 2016. DOF Subsea’s vessels Skandi Skolten and Normand Reach will be mobilised to carry out the offshore operations. The overall execution of the project will be handled by DOF Subsea’s operation centre in Bergen, Norway. An Estimated contract value for the firm scope is approximately NOK 150 million.

Aker Midsund has contracted Wärtsilä to supply its vessel internal electrostatic coalescer (VIEC) systems for three new oil field developments in the North Sea. The systems, designed to improve the speed and efficiency of the oil/ water separation process, will be deployed on Statoil’s Gina Krog and Mariner projects and on Det norske oljeselskap’s Ivar Aasen development offshore Norway.

130 topside leak monitors for Statoil’s Gina Krog

ClampOn has won an order to supply 130 topside leak monitors for Statoil’s Gina Krog project in the Norwegian North Sea. Solberg & Andersen in Bergen commissioned the equipment as part of a ValveWatch condition monitoring system. ClampOn previously won orders for sand monitors, PIG detectors, and corrosion-erosion monitors for the same project.

Teekay Shipping has contracted Kongsberg Maritime Engineering to supply an integrated control and safety system (ICSS) and power package for Statoil’s Gina Krog field FSO destined for the Norwegian North Sea. Teekay is converting the FSO under a US$220million program. The vessel is due to be delivered in 1Q 2017. The company’s scope includes design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and supply of all materials, equipment, accessories, and tools required for the ICSS; an MV switchboard, an LV switchboard (440VAC/230VAC), thruster transformers, thruster drives, thruster motors, and 230V AC distribution.

New technology to improve and maintain production Statoil has awarded a US$2.7 million contract to Emerson Process Management for work at an offshore platform in the Norwegian North Sea. Emerson will supply an integrated condition and performance monitoring system for the Gina Krog oil and gas platform. The conditionbased maintenance system will provide machinery protection, prediction and performance monitoring for the platform. It will enable Statoil personnel based onshore to monitor the platform’s pumps, compressors and other mechanical equipment to highlight potential problems before they affect production. The technology would help with cutting down maintenance actions to avoid shutdowns and maintain production.

DETAILS

The Johan Sverdrup is one of the five largest fields discovered on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Field production of Johan Sverdrup is likely to represent around 25 percent of all Norwegian oil production. The Johan Sverdrup discovery was a result of the Edvard Grieg discovery in 2007. Edvard Grieg opened up the possibility of a continuous oil-water contact on the southern part of the Utsira High, also named the Haugaland High. Lundin proved the Johan Sverdrup discovery with well 16/2-6, which was drilled in 2010 on the Avaldsnes structure in PL501. An appraisal program has been complete with 22 wells drilled and several of the wells having been side-tracked and production-tested. The final concept selection for Phase 1 of the field development has been chosen by the Johan Sverdrup partnership and front-end engineering for Phase 1 is currently on-going.

OPERATORS

Statoil is the operator with a 40% interest in PL501 and PL265 with a further 44.44% interest in PL502, closely followed by Petoro who holds a 30% interest in PL265 and 33.33% interest in PL502. Det norske oljeselskap holds 20% interest PL265 and 22.22% interest in PL502, Lundin Petroleum also has a 40% interest in PL501, 10% interest in PL265 and Maersk Oil Norway AS contains a 20% interest in PL501.

The Project Specific Agreement includes an option for delivery of Safety and automation equipment including detail engineering services and commissioning services. The agreement is subject to Statoils final investment decision.

NEWS IN BRIEF Aker Solutions chooses Lloyd’s Register Consulting Lloyd’s Register Consulting has secured a contract with Aker Solutions to provide consultancy services for the development of the Johan Sverdrup field.

The company has been chosen by Aker Solutions to assist in the development of this precedentsetting operation in the North Sea involving four bridged platforms.

The deliveries will be based on Kongsberg Maritime’s proven core SAS technology for Process Control, Power Distribution Control, Process Shutdown, Emergency Shutdown and Fire & Gas systems. The latest generations of Kongsberg Maritime SAS technology for production, integration, presentation, simulation, training and operations are also included.

IKM Ocean Design wins Infield Pipelines

FEED contract secured by RDS

FEED contract IKM Ocean Design has been awarded the Johan Sverdrup Infield Pipelines FEED contract by Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil. While the concept selection for Johan Sverdrup was made in February 2014, IKM plans to commence contract operations immediately to optimise the field architecture and infield pipeline layout, in order to develop a cost-effective solution for the Johan Sverdrup field development.

Aker Solutions has won a crucial contract to provide engineering services, procurement and management assistance for the giant Johan Sverdrup oilfield. The first contract awarded as part of the deal is worth US$105.54 million and involves the supply of FEED for Johan Sverdrup.

RDS secures US$10 million front-end engineering and design contract for the Johan Sverdrup field through a subcontract with Aker Solutions. To carry out front-end engineering design (FEED) work on Statoil’s Johan Sverdrup development in the Norwegian North Sea. The FEED work will be undertaken by the RDS team in London through a subcontract with Aker Solutions for full front end engineering of the drilling facilities throughout the platform.

The field, which is set to commence production in late 2019, is located south of Grane, north-east of Sleipner and about 140km west of Stavanger, while the water depth in the area is around 110m-120m. This is a continuation of the good work performed for the concept study completed at the beginning of 2014. Statoil was appointed working operator for Johan Sverdrup field in March 2012, following a pre-unit agreement between the different licensees. Peak production of the field is estimated to exceed 500,000bpd, which will make it the largest producing oil field in the North Sea by the time it reaches its peak.

PROJECT PROFILE DETAILS The Valemon field is located between production licence 050 and 193 in the Norwegian Sea. The gas and condensate field lies at a water depth of 135m about 160km west of Bergen. These interests in the field are subject to government approval of the Valemon unitisation agreement. Statoil submitted a plan for development (PDO) of the field, in October 2010. First production from the field is expected in 2014. The value of the field is proposed to be US$3.6 billion. The Valemon field was discovered in 1985. Statoil confirmed presence of hydrocarbons in the field with the drilling of the 34/11-5 S exploration well in June 2006. Drilling of the well was carried out from the Kvitebjørn platform to a depth of 4,370m under the sea. The 7,380m deep well was the longest high pressure / high temperature (HPHT) well ever to be drilled by Statoil.

OPERATORS The operators for the Valemon field are Statoil ASA with 53.775% interest, Petoro holds 30% interest, Shell contains only 3.225% interest, followed by Centrica with a 13% interest in the field.

The topside destined for the Statoil-operated Valemon field offshore Norway left the Samsung yard in South Korea on the morning of June 15, 2014. The journey to the Valemon field in the North Sea in Norway has taken 45 days. Produced by Samsung Heavy Industries this is the first Statoil topsides built in South Korea. The structure sailed from the yard on 15 June this year, and after a quick stop in Åmøyfjorden, Stavanger, last Saturday, it headed out to the field. The transportation to Norway took 40 days. The topsides were finally lifted into place on the steel jacket on the Valemon field in the North Sea on Monday the 28th of July.

Westcon to provide quay for Valemon topside

Statoil has entered into an option agreement with Westcon Yards in Florø for quay rental and preparations of the topside of the Valemon platform before installation in the North Sea. The topside will be cleaned and prepared before it is to be installed into the North Sea by the heavy lift vessel Saipem 7000. The agreement with Statoil is an option agreement that can be used if the transport from South Korea arrives the North Sea before the heavy lift vessel is ready for mobilization.

NEWS IN BRIEF PCD systems excellent results are rewarded

The Siem WIS PCD services shall be used in connection with M-I Swaco’s manage pressure drilling (MPD) services for Statoil on the Gudrun and Valemon fields in the North Sea. The operations at the Gudrun and Valemon fields shall commence in the second quarter of 2014. The contract award is an important acknowledgement of the PCD system developed by Siem WIS. The PCD system has passed all qualification tests asked by various oil companies with excellent results, including the most rigorous test ever performed for this kind of technology.

Floatel Superior authorised

Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) has authorized the use of the semisub Floatel Superior as a mobile accommodation facility to support Statoil’s Valemon gas field development in North Sea blocks 34/11 and 34/10, west of the Kvitebjørn field. Water depth is 135 m (443 ft). The consent runs from Aug. 1 through Dec. 15, close to the expected field start-up date. Valemon’s development calls for a fixed production platform with a steel jacket, and a simplified separation process. The facility will be controlled remotely from the Kvitebjørn facilities.

“Unless there are changes in the time schedule, Valemon will be the first offshore project for Westcon Yards in Florø after we changed our strategy in order to enter this market. It is thus a milestone and a prestigious project for us. We look forward to welcoming the topside and to working together with Statoil”, Gustav Johan Nydal, managing director at Westcon Yards Florø. He adds: “In my opinion, crucial in obtaining this contract was Westcons track record that we have the infrastructure and competence needed, our references on recent subsea projects, as well as the work of deepening the quay area. Regarding the latter; it is already evident that this was a sound investment by our owner.”

A Million Dollar commissioning contract

Agility Group has secured a US$29.7 million contract from Samsung Heavy Industries for the hook-up and commissioning of the Valemon platform for the Statoiloperated field off Norway. The deal adds to existing work for the Norwegian contractor related to ongoing construction of the platform topsides at the South Korean yard, including engineering and fabrication of the flare tower. Valemon’s 9000 tonne steel jacket, built at Heerema Fabrication Group in the Netherlands, was installed at the field last summer. Production from the field is due to start in the fourth quarter of 2014.

EUROPEAN NEWS PROJECT UPDATES Bilfinger Salamis UK awarded with decommissioning contract

Bilfinger Salamis UK has been awarded a significant contract for the supply of the fabric maintenance services support and access solutions by Aker Solutions, for the first stage of decommissioning CNR International’s Murchison Platform. The contract will initially see the company provide alternative system scaffold, multidiscipline rope access teams and fabric maintenance services over the next three years, with scope to extend service range as the project develops. Bilfinger Salamis UK has a broad range of services which support various stages of the decommissioning process, including initial survey work, integrity management, alternative access, rope access, supply of deck crew, vessel management, cold cutting, industrial cleaning and handling of hazardous waste. First commissioned in 1980, Murchison has produced more than 390 million barrels of oil equivalent and has played an integral part in the UK’s energy business. The Murchison field lies in UK Block 211/19 and extends into the Norwegian Block 33/9 in the northern North Sea, 150 kilometres northeast of Shetland. The platform stands in a water depth of 156 metres.

Claxton receives a multi-year contract with Det norske

Running from January 2014 until June 2020 (with optional periods of 1+1 year), the contract includes high- and low-pressure risers, auxiliary equipment and services offshore Norway. The scope of work includes the procurement of high and low-pressure surface risers for the lvar Aasen field development; the rental of a Claxton 18.3/4”, 7000 psi subsea riser for the Hanz field; the rental of 18.3/4”, 15,000 psi high and 30” low-pressure surface risers for exploration wells on the Norwegian Continental Shelf; options for other field development projects; and high-pressure, high-temperature work during the contract period. The optional services include complete running services for the equipment and providing centralizer systems along with lateral and vertical tension rings.

NEWS IN BRIEF Aibel hooks up with Statoil for Oseberg C platform Aibel has received a contract from Statoil for the hook-up of new living quarters to the Oseberg C platform in the North Sea. The contract has a value of about US$20 million. The project, Oseberg C Continuous Drilling (LQ Extension), is a contract, encompassing engineering, procurement, construction and installation. The new module will connect to existing living quarters on the Oseberg C platform, offering 30 additional housing cabins offshore. Work is to commence the first week of August and connection is scheduled for the second quarter of 2016.

Contract extension granted for PD&MS

PD&MS Energy has been awarded an offshore contract extension for engineering work on Fairfield Energy’s North Sea assets. Following an initial three-year contract, the options will see the Aberdeen-headquartered firm provide engineering, procurement and offshore construction services for an additional two years from May 2014. The scope of work will focus primarily on Fairfield Energy’s Dunlin platform in the East Shetland basin.

Trelleborg is awarded a substantial order for the Shah Deniz Field

Trelleborg’s offshore operation has been awarded a substantial order for its foam buoyancy systems, for the prestigious second phase development of the Shah Deniz field offshore Azerbaijan Contracted by BP. Trelleborg will supply a buoyancy package; filled with its high temperature syntactic foam. With a design life of 30 years, DBMs are typically used between a subsea structure and a surface vessel or platform. A specialist clamping solution securely attaches the DBM assembly to the desired location on a riser, allowing the DBMs to be fitted at any point along the length of the pipeline. The buoyancy segments are assembled to mechanically lock around the clamp and are secured with circumferential straps.

Petrofac secures a ten year contract with EnQuest

Petrofac is set to continue to support EnQuest’s North Sea assets, after securing an operations and maintenance contract for up to ten years. The contract, worth an estimated US$630 million, supersedes an initial five year contract awarded to Petrofac in 2013. It supports 300 offshore and onshore jobs and will see Petrofac continue to provide operations and maintenance services to EnQuest on the Thistle, Heather and Northern Producer assets, plus the floating production, storage and offloading vessel the EnQuest Producer, which is currently undergoing final finishing and commissioning work ahead of its deployment to the Alma/Galia field.

BP to work alongside Aker Solutions in Norway

Aker Solutions has won a US$302 million contract for work with BP offshore Norway. The company has signed a framework agreement to provide engineering, modifications and maintenance services for BP’s oil and gas fields in the region. Work will take place over two years, with a potential to extend that for another four years. Aker will carry out work on the Ula, Tambar, Hod, Skarv and Alhall field offshore Norway, carrying out studies, maintenance and modification project work. The company will carry out a number of decommissioning services for the major. The companies have worked together for more than 20 years and signed the first long-term framework agreement of this nature in 1999.

HB Rentals has delivered a 60Pax linkable accommodation complex to a jackup barge for the Conwy gas field development in Liverpool Bay off northwest England. The 60-bed complex comprises sleeper welfare modules, access stairs, walkways, recreational facilities, and meeting/conference rooms. The project presented various challenges including limited deck space on the JB115 barge. This made it necessary to stack the modules four-high and to undertake additional structural analysis to meet this requirement. In addition, the modules had to meet blast overpressure criteria due to the proximity of the barge to the platform. HB’s scope included upgrading existing fire and gas detection systems.

NEWS IN BRIEF OGN Group secures EnQuest producer FPSO contract

The multi-million pound contract with EnQuest, will lead to the creation of 600 new project jobs at its Tyneside facility. OGN will provide fabrication services to undertake finishing and commissioning works on the EnQuest Producer, a 249m long Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.The vessel was previously Bluewater’s Uisge Gorm FPSO, recently arrived at OGN’s Hadrian Yard, Wallsend. Ahead of its arrival, OGN completed dredging in the River Tyne at its quayside to accommodate the 53,176 gross tonne FPSO. Upon completion, the vessel will be deployed to the Alma/Galia field in the North Sea, which is a redevelopment of the UK’s first producing field, Argyll.

Maersk selects KBR

Maersk Oil UK’s Culzean US$4.7 billion ultra-high-pressure, high-temperature project has shifted up a gear with the Danish operator selecting KBR to carry out frontend engineering and design for a major three platform bridge-linked development.

TOTAL E&P UK Limited awards contract to EnerMech

EnerMech has been awarded a contract covering TOTAL E&P UK Limited’s UK North Sea assets which could be its largest process services contract to date. The value of the five year agreement, which covers the St Fergus and Shetland gas terminals and Alwyn, Dunbar, Elgin and Franklin platforms, was not disclosed. The workscope incudes the provision of topside process services including flange management, on site in-situ machining, nitrogen services, ultra high-pressure system nitrogen/helium leak testing, chemical cleaning and training services.

Roxtec to supply Shetland

Fluor Corporation to design LNG terminal

Cable and pipe seal manufacturer Roxtec has won a major contract to supply one of the largest and deepest oil sea developments in the North Sea. Roxtec’s UK and Korean operations are working with global petroleum giant BP on its Quad 204 offshore oil and gas project, where a new floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is being built. The unit will be located approximately 80 miles west of Shetland in Scotland.

Fluor Corporation has been awarded a contract by Gate Terminal BV to design and build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) break bulk terminal in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Fluor booked the contract for an undisclosed value in the second quarter of 2014. Fluor will provide engineering, procurement and construction management services for the jetty, loading facilities, boil-off gas compressors, connection to the LNG terminal and other facilities. Break bulk terminals split up large-scale LNG shipments into smaller quantities to facilitate the distribution of LNG to be used as fuel for ships and heavy trucks. Fluor’s office in Spain, which has completed LNG projects globally, will be responsible for executing the project. Gate Terminal anticipates the terminal will be ready for operation in 2016.

The Quad 204 is being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, the largest shipyard in the world. It will replace the existing Schiehallion FPSO and include an extension of a subsea system with new and replacement flow lines, new and replacement risers and 14 wells in addition to the 52 existing ones. Roxtec is in partnership with the yard to supply a range of bespoke products which will seal stainless steel tubes. The seals were chosen because the maintenance of them is quick and simple and they will be easy to upgrade in future renovation work. Riser Monitoring Improves Integrity Management during Drilling The extreme physical demands and the severe consequences of failure offshore require engineering processes to be covered by adequate safety margins to meet industry best practice and regulatory requirements. It is, however, often difficult to fully quantify the actual safety margin due to the assumptions made in the engineering process, and therefore the design of equipment is often done conservatively to maximise the safety margin available.

Project Background

When the operator began development drilling and completion activities on a field in the North Sea, the 300ft (91m) water depth meant the jackup was nearing the limits of its operational capabilities. Operating the rig near its limit resulted in reduced safety margin in the structural integrity of the jackup rig, the riser and the subsea wellhead than would normally be experienced. A high pressure riser was used to drill and complete the wells on the field development. Analysis of the HP riser and wellhead completed prior to drilling showed that as a consequence of large motions of the jackup platform during service, the HP riser was subjected to high loads, high stresses and high levels of fatigue damage accumulation over one year of operations. Further, the rig was subjected to high loading at the interfaces to the riser equipment. In view of these findings, the operator decided to implement a riser integrity management system, using structural monitoring to measure in-situ riser response data.

• CTU Deck Load Sensors - Because drilling was taking place near the limits of the cantilever, assurance was needed that the lateral and vertical loads acting on the conductor tensioning unit (CTU) deck remained within safe design limits. • Environmental Sensors- An acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) was installed to measure current speed and direction through depth, and a wave radar was installed to measure wave height and frequency statistics.

Improved Integrity Management

Due to a number of potential integrity threats identified to the HP riser and CTU deck during development drilling, a monitoring system was developed in order to confirm that the HP riser maintained its integrity throughout operations. The monitoring system demonstrated that the analytical models used during engineering require calibration and that despite use of conservative design methods in some cases the response is not conservative compared to the in-situ riser. Overall the use of structural monitoring allows for improved management of the integrity of the riser.

The Monitoring System

The monitoring system was made up entirely of instrumentation placed above the water line. The system, the first online monitoring system to be installed on a jackup, consisted of four main components: • Jackup Motion Sensors-to verify design information and assumptions made for the magnitude of jackup deflections under environmental loading; • Tension Joint Sensors - To determine the fatigue damage accumulated to the HP riser, a dynamic curvature sensor was installed to the tension joint;

Riser Engineering:optimised analysis gives better results at a lower cost

Award winning offshore solutions firm, Aquaterra Energy, has spent many years delivering complete offshore riser engineering solutions to clients across the world, and knows that comprehensive analysis is a fundamental requirement for the successful design and longevity of all offshore risers and conductors. However, the role of analysis is often limited and performed late in the well design process; simply ensuring that the chosen riser or conductor design meets appropriate industry standards for the specific demanding offshore environment. Aquaterra Energy’s extensive experience in the field of riser engineering has shown that analysis is, in fact, most effective when conducted collaboratively with the client and used to optimise a design, rather than just validate it. Optimisation through analysis is beginning to become more widespread in the oil and gas industry, as riser analysis conducted at a later stage in the project’s lifecycle holds less of a positive influence on the project, and often results in a higher commercial cost to the client. In addition, the long term capability of these systems from a fatigue standpoint is also coming under increased levels of scrutiny. Analysis conducted prior to the design stage helps to save clients considerable expense and time by outlining potential problems and weaknesses of a structure prior to capital expenditure. The company has found that upon project initiation, the first step should be to gather data required to build the models and calculations. Aquaterra Energy takes a proactive role in gathering, presenting and agreeing this data in a collaborative process with the client. This is a key part of the project, if inaccurate data is used, the fidelity of the results may be affected. Pre-processing follows, in which the analysis models are created based on the information agreed. This includes a series of models designed to examine the multiple load cases necessary to assess or optimise the conductor or riser system against the offshore environment and code requirements. Aquaterra Energy’s analysis work treats risers and conductors as part of a complete system, which needs to be understood and assessed in its entirety. Its engineers therefore hold a detailed appreciation for the rig interfaces, surface and subsea equipment (such as the wellhead, BOP, LMRP and all connections), and support conditions, and then models the conductor or

riser design appropriately using best practice. In 2010, the firm invested in developing its own analysis software, to supplement the existing industry software. The software enables Aquaterra Energy to build models to best practice, set up many load cases efficiently, and to post-process many analysis runs in an automated and standardised way. OrcaFlex, the world’s leading package for the dynamic analysis of offshore marine systems, is then used to process the analyses. For large projects and large multi-well campaigns, as well as single well campaigns needing more complex analyses, this can run to many thousands of models, and so Aquaterra Energy has invested in state of the art parallel computer processing to work with multiple models. As such, the ability to understand how the riser system will perform over a number of wells and, in particular, analysis of its fatigue performance is a crucial step for any project. Typically, this analysis includes a representation of the riser system itself, along with the key boundary conditions provided by the soil and jackup. Whilst any riser system component is effectively “fatigue free” at the start of the first well, when it is reused on second and subsequent wells it may start with a degree of fatigue damage already having occurred. For monitoring systems, a number of approaches to developing an understanding of the fatigue damage being incurred exist, generally based on accelerometers or strain gauges. Building electronic solutions For over 20 years Eztek Limited has been a trusted supplier of hazardous area and harsh environment surface instrumentation to the oil and gas industry worldwide. Last year they increased production, design and sales staff. This year the company will move into its new office building, situated between the fabrication and production facilities, which was built to accommodate future expansion. TallyBook data loggers, TalkBack intercom systems and EziLine wire line equipment are used by loyal clients around the world, some in very remote locations. All of its products are designed to be easy to use, while still offering all of the features that clients need. The hazardous area ratings allow the equipment to be close to the action. In the case of the TallyBook DAQ systems, the operator and their clients have immediate access to real-time information. Most of Eztek’s products are built with some degree of customization, allowing clients to get exactly what they require.

“Our aim is to increase the safety and efficiency of drilling and wire line operations,” explains Eztek’s Business Development Manager, Mervyn Newberry. “By listening closely to our clients and working with them we can develop products that solve their problems. (HHI) received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Hess Exploration and Production Malaysia B.V. for the provision of engineering, procurement, construction, transportation, installation, hook-up and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the Bergading Complex which comprises a central processing platform (CPP), a bridge and a wellhead platform. The Bergading Complex is part of the full field development project in North Malay Basin, which Hess operates under a production sharing contract with PETRONAS. The CPP will be constructed at HHI’s offshore yard in Ulsan, South Korea, while the other facilities will be constructed by its appointed fabrication sub-contractor in Malaysia. The offshore installation of the Bergading facilities is scheduled to take place by the end of 2016.

Supply of umbilical’s for the Jangkirk project Oceaneering International, Inc. has secured a contract from FMC Technologies Singapore Pte Limited, a subsidiary of FMC Technologies, Inc., to supply umbilicals for the Jangkrik project located in the Muara Bakau PCS (Production Sharing Contract) area off the coast of Indonesia. The order is for super-duplex steel tube production control umbilicals, with a total combined length of approximately 31 miles (50 kilometres). These will be used to supply hydraulic and electrical power and chemical injection to the subsea wells in the field.

A consortium comprising subsidiaries of McDermott and Indonesia’s PT Encona Inti Industri was successful in the tender for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Gendalo-Gehem natural gas development in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The firm said the contract award will be subject to various conditions, including government and regulatory approvals and final investment decision (FID). Chevron is the operator of the Gendalo-Gehem deepwater natural gas project, which includes 2 separate hub developments, each with its own floating production unit, subsea drill centers, gas and condensate pipelines, and onshore receiving facility. The FID for the project, with a maximum daily production of around 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 47,000 barrels of condensate, is planned for 2014, subject to the timing of government approvals.

New land rigs Gulf Drilling International (GDI) has ordered two new land rigs to work for Qatar Petroleum under newly awarded contracts. The orders from Superior Derrick Services totaled about US$53 million. The 1500HP and 3000HP rigs will be called GDI-7 and GDI-8 respectively. GDI-7 will take 10 months to complete (Q3 of 2015) while GDI-8 will be finished in 12 months (Q4 of 2015). GDI-8 will be the largest land rig in GDI’s fleet, capable of drilling extended reach wells and drill to greater depths.

A joint venture for GS and Hyundai Hyundai E&C, Hyundai Engineering Co Ltd, GS Engineering & Construction, and SK Engineering & Construction is the South Korean joint venture who won the project from the country’s State Company for Oil Projects. Hyundai E&C and affiliate Hyundai Engineering have a combined 37.5 percent stake in the project, worth US$2.265 billion. GS also has a 37.5 percent stake, while SK has a 25 percent stake worth US$1.51 billion.

Project management to increase oil production

SNC-Lavalin Inc awarded a contract by Abu Dhabi Oil Company Ltd. (Japan), (ADOC) to provide project management consultancy services for an expansion aimed at increasing production from oilfields located offshore of the UAE. ADOC is currently operating the Mubarraz, Umm Al Anbar and Neewat AlGhalan offshore fields in the Persian Gulf. The company intends to increase oil production from these existing oilfields and develop the Hail oil field as part of their expansion project. In order to achieve the higher production, ADOC is considering an expansion of the hydrocarbon handling capacity of the existing facilities at Mubarraz and the Umm Al Anbar Site Terminal. SNC-Lavalin will provide project management consultancy services for the front-end engineering design (FEED) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) stages of the expansion project.

Advanced tubing for Egina project in Nigeria

BG Group has awarded Technip subsidiary Genesis Oil and Gas Consultants Ltd. the Upstream Concept Select Study for the deepwater gas discoveries in blocks 1, 3, and 4 offshore Tanzania.

Fine Tubes has been awarded a major order by FMC Technologies for the supply of advanced tubing for Total’s offshore Egina project. Located some 150km off the coast of Nigeria at a depth of up to 1750m, the Egina oil field is being developed by Total Upstream Nigeria Limited for whom FMC Technologies is providing all the subsea production systems.

The fields are in water depths of 1,000-1,800 m (3,281-5,905 ft). BG and its partners plan a development linked to a new LNG plant on the Tanzanian coast. Genesis’ scope takes in the upstream facilities, concept selection, and prefront-end engineering and design.

The oil field is estimated to reach a peak production rate of 150,000 barrels per day and covers an area of around 500 square miles. Fine Tubes has been contracted to supply FMC with significant volumes of seamless instrumentation tubing for the control, hydraulic and injection lines required for the subsea manifolds. Fine Tubes has been delivering high precision tubes for super critical applications in the Oil and Gas industry for the last 70 years. The tube mill regularly supplies precision tubing in stainless steels 904L (UNS N08904) and 6Moly (UNS S31254), as well as nickel alloy 625 (UNS N06625) and alloy 825 (UNS N08825) for global offshore and onshore projects.

Contract secured for Odfjell Drilling’s sixth generation Deepsea Stravanger Odfjell Drilling and BP Angola have entered into a contract amendment securing further work for Odfjell Drilling’s sixth generation ultra deepwater and harsh environment Deepsea Stavanger (UDW semisubmersible) on Block 18 in Angola. The contract is in direct continuation of the existing contract and is for six wells with an estimated total duration of 13 months. This contract secures work for “Deepsea Stavanger” for BP in Angola through 2015. The contract value is estimated to US$210 million. In addition, the contract amendment includes two unpriced options for two wells each.

Vallourec to supply the TEN ultradeep-water oil and gas project in Ghana Vallourec, world leader of premium tubular solutions, has been selected to supply premium line pipes and welding services for the TEN ultra-deepwater oil and gas project, operated by Tullow Oil plc in Ghana and executed by a consortium of Subsea 7 and Technip. Vallourec will provide Subsea 7 with seamless offshore line-pipe including anticorrosion coating for a total of 15,000 tonnes. The pipes will be dedicated to production flowlines (pipein-pipe system by ITP InTerPipe) and gas export line. Deliveries are currently in progress. Vallourec’s subsidiary Serimax, an international welding company, will accomplish associated welding services for the double jointing operations related to the production pipe in pipe and the gas export lines. Those operations are to start during the summer 2014.

Inter Pipeline Ltd has entered into a binding agreement with Japan Canada Oil Sands Limited (“JACOS”) and Nexen Energy ULC, a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited (“Nexen”), to provide diluent transportation services for their jointly owned Hangingstone oil sands project. Under the initial term of the 20-year shipor-pay agreement, Inter Pipeline will provide 7,000 barrels per day of committed capacity on its Polaris pipeline system. A new US$25 million, 2 kilometre pipeline lateral with associated metering facilities will connect Polaris to the Hangingstone oil sands facility.

Cameron LNG, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, received authorization from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to site, construct and operate a natural gas liquefaction and export facility at the site of the company’s LNG receipt terminal in Hackberry, La.

Automation systems to be provided by Honeywell Process Solutions

The authorization approves the development of the three-train liquefaction facility that will provide an export capability of 12 million tonnes per annum of LNG, or approximately 1.7 billion cubic feet per day, and will allow CB&I and its joint venture partner, Chiyoda, to access the site and begin construction later in 2014.

Honeywell Process Solutions was selected by Suncor Energy to provide automation systems for the Fort Hills Oil Sands project in Alberta, Canada. Honeywell will supply technology to integrate the site’s control and safety systems, manage alarms, and provide advanced simulation software that enables critical operations planning and operator training.

SOUTH AMERICA Saipem to install Lula pre-salt pipelines, risers offshore Brazil Petrobras has contracted Saipem for construction of subsea facilities for the Lula Norte, Lula Sul, and Lula Extremo Sul project offshore Brazil. The location is in the Santos basin presalt region, around 300 km (186 mi) from the coasts of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. Saipem will engineer, procure, fabricate, and install three offshore pipelines, associated pipeline end terminations, and free standing hybrid risers for the gas export systems to be installed in the Lula field in water depths of up to 2,200 m (7,218 ft). The Saipem FDS2 will perform most of the offshore within the first half of 2016. Saipem’s yard under development in Guarujá will fabricate the risers and subsea equipment. The Saipem FDS2 vessel will handle most of the offshore installations during the first half of 2016.

BG, KNOT Offshore pen Windsor Knutsen charter deal KNOT Offshore Partners LP is in an agreement with Brazil Shipping I Limited, an affiliate of BG Group (“BG”) for the time charter of the vessel Windsor Knutsen. The hire rate for the initial term is in line with the rate in the existing charter with BG. The charter has an initial term of two years. BG has options to extend the term of the charter for three additional one-year periods. The charter will start in or around the fourth quarter of 2015. If all three extension options are exercised, the Windsor Knutsen will operate for BG until the end of 2020. The shuttle tanker will operate in Brazil. BG has recently notified the Partnership that the Windsor Knutsen will be redelivered under its existing charter at the end of July 2014.

WorleyParsons has been selected as the main provider of full service engineering and project and portfolio management services under a Master Services Agreement (MSA) for the Atlantic Company of Trinidad and Tobago’s (Atlantic’s) four LNG trains, located in Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago. The MSA is a long-term Improve contract for portfolio management services that include engineering management, FEED, special studies, procurement services, EPC bid package preparation, process hazard and safety analysis, detailed design and project execution support. The services will be led and executed from WorleyParsons’ Trinidad and Tobago location which has been delivering brownfield engineering, project and portfolio management services for over ten years.

OCEANIA Biffi provides electric actuator for Ichthys Biffi Italia has shipped four EGR 50K electric actuators for installation on the Ichthys gas project, the largest oil and gas development offshore Australia’s Northern Territory. Working with McDermott, Biffi customized the actuators to operate 42-in. class 1500 quarter-turn ball valves. In response to McDermott’s requirements, the actuators were designed to offer an operating time of 42 seconds in emergencies. The EGR 50K is the largest of its kind ever built by Biffi. The actuators will go at the head of the pipeline that connects the rig in the gas/condensate field with one located near the coast of Australia.

GLOBAL NEWS IN PROJECTS DEPTH The EGR 50K has four main parts, including a spool piece with a coupling supported by bronze bearings, a four-stage epicyclic gear reducer, and an electric motor designed to combine high speed with high torque. The Ichthys project, scheduled for completion in 2016, is a joint venture between INPEX and Total, and is expected to produce 8.4 million metric tons (9.3 million tons) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 1.6 million metric tons (1.8 million tons) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per annum. Gas from the Ichthys field, in the Browse basin, 125 mi (201 km) offshore Western Australia, will undergo preliminary processing offshore to remove water and extract condensate. The gas will then be exported to onshore processing facilities in Darwin via a 552-mi (888-km) subsea pipeline.

SAL teams up with Australia’s BAM Clough SAL Heavy Lift, through its wholly owned Singapore subsidiary, SAL Heavy Lift Singapore, has signed a major new contract with Australia’s BAM Clough Joint Venture for shipping and deployment of LNG and LPG product loading platforms for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project, near Darwin, Australia. BAM Clough is delivering the Product Loading Jetty and Module Offloading Facility packages of works for the Project’s onshore LNG facilities under subcontracts awarded by engineering, procurement and construction contractor JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd. The two platforms, being built in Batam, Indonesia, will be among the largest structures ever handled by a heavy lift vessel. The LNG platform will weigh in at a hefty 1,080 tonnes with dimensions of 40 x 39 x 8 metres. The LPG platform will be even more substantial at 1,320 tonnes with dimensions of 45 x 40 x 8 metres.

NEWS IN BRIEF LNG Concept Study for Pandora

Cott Oil and Gas received the final LNG Concept Study for the Pandora Gas Field from Wison Offshore and Marine. Cott was awarded a 40% interest in the Pandora gas Discovery (PRL 38) in December 2014 which contains a gross 2C Contingent Resource of 792 BCF gas (132 mmboe). Wison has presented two technically and commercially feasible concepts based on a lean gas composition for consideration: - A 1mtpa offshore Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel incorporating gas clean up, liquefaction and storage for 170,000m3 - A Near Shore LNG vessel with 170,000m3 of storage and with sufficient topside space to accommodate up to 2.5 mtpa of liquefaction capacity. The Pandora gas fields were discovered in 1988 and are located approximately 200km west of Port Moresby in the Gulf of Papua. The gas field comprises two discoveries in water depth of approximately 120m.

Santos and GDF SUEZ seek development concepts for Bonaparte LNG

The Bonaparte LNG project will consider other potential development options in addition to the FLNG concept to develop the Petrel, Tern, and Frigate natural gas fields, which are located 250 km (156 mi) offshore west of Darwin. These options will include a pipeline connection to Darwin.

SAL Heavy Lift will engage the MV SVENJA for the task of loading each of the platforms from Batam and discharging on to pile foundations in Darwin harbour. The operation will bring together teams from SAL and BAM Clough, cooperating to develop engineering solutions at the cutting edge of the HLV industry envelope.

While the Santos (40%) and GDF SUEZ (60% and operator) believe that the fields have material value, their future development, using floating LNG technology, although technically robust as demonstrated during extensive preFEED studies, does not currently meet the companies’ commercial requirements.

MV SVENJA is one of SAL’s two Type 183 sister ships, equipped with two 1,000-tonne rotating mast cranes. They are currently the world’s heaviest lifting ocean transport vessel. The first of the two shipments from Batam will take place mid-2014.

Consequently, the proposed Bonaparte FLNG project will not be taken into the FEED phase at this time.

GAINING TANGIBLE BENEFITS FROM VIRTUAL PLANT ASSETS Owner operators in the capital-intensive process, power, and marine industries are facing greater challenges to ensure their profitability and long-term viability than ever before.

O

wners are expanding existing facilities and building new capacity to meet growing demands in the global market. They must do this safely, with finite resources, within demanding schedules to minimize time-to-market/maximize time-in-market, with an increasing number of local and global contractors and within strict capital expenditure (CAPEX) budgets. In addition, increasingly stringent regulations all add unprecedented pressure when trying to maximize asset performance to achieve safe, sustainable production at lowest possible costs (OPEX). The ever increasing pace of change, volatility and globalization of business places additional demands on owners and their ability to respond flexibly to change. Business as usual is no longer an option. In this business environment it is no longer sufficient to capture and manage the virtual plant asset which comprises 3D models, laser scans, intelligent and unintelligent CAD drawings, engineering databases etc. but exploit the value this offers to provide actionable information to achieve real business benefits. Key technologies to meet these demands include cloud computing, 3D visualization and mobile access. IntergraphŠ SmartPlantŠ Enterprise for Owner Operators (SPO) not only manages the engineering design basis but leverages this in the context of critical work processes providing actionable information to support all phases of the facility life-cycle. SPO’s comprehensive solutions for data validation and handover reduce the time and costs of data take-on and ensure the quality and completeness of data handover. During the CAPEX phase processes are provided to ensure effective management of stakeholder interfaces, project changes, non-conformities and queries. Management reports provide an oversight and enable management to take effective remedial action. Improved management of these processes can significantly reduce claims and schedule delays. Systems completion refers to the transition between construction close-out and the plant entering operations. It includes activities such as mechanical completion, commissioning, preservation and pre-startup safety reviews. This is often a complex undertaking, involving many parties and data from many sources. At this stage, small delays in one area can have a serious knock-on effect elsewhere. SPO provides an effective solution to make the systems completion process more efficient with automated allocation of check sheets, 3D visualization and mobile capture of check sheets and punchlists. SPO offers interoperability with third-party operations systems such as maintenance, reliability, and inspections systems, ensuring that data in these systems is kept in line with the dynamic engineering design basis. This preconfigured MOC process includes an electronic workflow for managing the review, authorization, design, and approval of changes in the engineering design basis, and optionally the notification of maintenance to perform changes by creating notification records in a plant maintenance system (such as SAP PM). Many Owner Operator work processes are undertaken in remote locations or on the plant floor where online access to information is not available.
