2018 has been a great year for you with peole raving over Aiyaary... 2018 is not just about Aiyaary, there is a bigger picture to it. Yes, I dabbled in 3 industries, shooting for 5 films. In Bollywood, I did De De Pyar De with Ajay Devgn; Tollywood- NTR’s biopic where I portrayed Sridevi; Kollywood- NGK with Suriya, Dev with Karthi and an untitled science fiction film with Sivakarthikeyan. I have also signed another Bollywood film Marjaavan with Siddharth Malhotra and Tollywood film Venky Mama with Naga Chaitanya. What aspect did you discovered? Many! I realised my love for taking up challenging roles, donning different looks and experimenting. I don’t want to do repetitive work and settle for normal; I want to keep pushing the envelope. Co-star you enjoyed working with? All of them! I want to work with them again. There is so much to learn from them - be it Ajay, Tabu or Suriya. Director you want to work with again? How do you expect me to pick a favourite fruit from cherries and apples? Everyone has his/her own unique flavour. Prep-work for Sridevi’s portrayal Director Krish sent me a few of her films to study. I had to play that part when she had just debuted. The challenge was to live up to people’s expectations because when you have a reference point, people are obviously going to compare. REWIND Formative Years I was an Army kid and changed nearly 10 schools. An all-rounder, I was not only good in academics, but also in sports. I played golf at national level. I pursued Maths Honours from Jesus and Mary College in Delhi.

Family’s support It was my mother Mrs.Rini’s choice. When I was in school, she was hell bent that I contested for Miss India. I, being a tomboy, refused it. I was also skeptical about wearing a bikini. She motivated me further and I gave in. My father, Col.K.J.Singh urged me to get colourful bikinis. So, yes, they have always had my back. Even now, if I am confused about a script, I seek their suggestions and they are all ears. Femina Miss India experience I was just 19 years old, when I contested. The pageant prepares you to deal with the world. I didn’t even know how to take care of my skin, style my hair or what to wear. Their one-month training got me all set and ready. Anyway, it is a good platform to step into the industry. On bagging your first film My father insisted that I get my portfolio pictures clicked, when I was 18. Within a month, I got an offer in a Kannada film

Gilli, a remake of Selvaraghavan’s 7G Rainbow Colony. At that time, I was not aware of the South Indian film industry. I refused the offer as the language was alien to me and I wanted to debut in Bollywood. But, they were quite insistent that I be part of it and called my father. I watched the remake and signed up for it. My pocket money was Rs.2,000 per month then and the director had offered me a hefty amount. I could, finally, see my dream of buying my first car- Ritz coming true. What happened next? I had no training whatsoever, when I did that film. But I realised that I was good at mugging up and enjoyed being in front of the camera. Unfortunately, since I felt short of attendance in college, I had to take a break from films and finish my studies. Later, I moved to Mumbai after Miss India. I bagged my first Bollywood film Yaariyan after one or two auditions!


Did you ever get dropped from a film because a star kid/star wanted the role? Many times, not because of a star kid, though! For instance, I was dropped from a Telugu film, after shooting for 4 days. They had finally decided on a star actress. Unfortunately, word spreads about these occurrences and people got the wrong message that I either had an attitude problem or wasn’t able to deliver my best. So, no director wanted to launch me. However, Venkatadri Express came by and it was a blockbuster. As an entrepreneur... The fact that F45 has transformed so many lives is just overwhelming. I recall, I was at the F45 studio in Vizag to address

On the periphery I have loved Telugu cinema since I was a child. So it was natural for me to gravitate towards it. When I took the magazine job, I even styled for shoots which led to styling for leads in feature films. Working behind the camera allowed me to learn from some of the most talented crew and the process of filmmaking.

Rich experience In this incredible journey I got to work with and learn from some really interesting people and I must here gratefully acknowledge a couple of mentors. I could even interview my big screen idols. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I got an opportunity to reinvent myself and here I am.

The first act I completed my schooling and graduation in Auckland and was mulling over a career in HR. That was when it dawned on me that the 9 to 5 scene was just not for me and ended up learning makeup and styling. A chance encounter during my cousin’s wedding in Hyderabad got me a job in a South Indian film magazine and I moved to Hyderabad on an impulse.


Artist vs. artiste The difference is huge. I paint in the silent solitude of nights and I act with many people around me. Surprisingly, I thrive well in both situations. It feels like solitude is needed while I paint but the creative chaos of the process is equally important for acting. Also

Fun memories I am good friends with crew and other actors so it has been a fun time. Outdoor shoots were the best because you get to bond with the team in all aspects.

Dubbing I dub for all my films. Though it is time consuming, it is rewarding as it gives you a second chance to add to the character. Voice acting is just as important as acting.

The first role & first shot A period gangster drama, directed by Sudheer Varma and starred Sharwanand. I was supposed to style Sudheer's earlier project and also style our hero for other films. The first shot was nerve-wrecking, but my training helped me stay focused. Since then every day came with a new lesson.

Though acting was never on my radar, I studied it at the Sydney College. That was when I realised that acting was my calling.

If not an actor.... I am working on my next series of paintings titled Lumarai. It includes

The journey I have had two solo exhibitions titled Om and Om Namah Shivaya. They focused on the spiritual realm. God Shiva and Goddess Shakti feature predominantly in my art as I feel a deep connect with them. I have also got a large collection of abstracts. I was roped in to paint for an app – Mytha and also a couple of companies. My art allowed me to help those in need. My mixed media acrylic painting on a 24”x24” canvas yielded a generous Rs.1.7 lakh for Teach for Change initiative. I am looking forward to be associated with more such projects.

Maya as an artist Even as a child I would lose myself in doodles. My mother is an artist so it came to me naturally. During school it was a gradable subject and I took it seriously. Whenever I go to a new city I try to visit the local art museums and learn.

Qualities of good DJ Anyone can learn how to handle a console. Besides, every club in every city has a DJ but only some become famous. It is because they understand the crowd and their taste. If there is no smooth transition between two songs then there is no point of the DJ being up there. This is what I feel. No offense to anybody.

Interest in music I started singing in 1978 and did my first stage show when I was 4. I pursued Post Graduation in Indian Vocal Music. DJ Journey Music was always within me despite the fact that I chose fitness first as my career. In 2016, I marked my official entry as a DJ and my first gig was at Liquids. Genre that defines you I play all kinds, depending on the crowd. I love and enjoy playing Bollywood and Commercial English songs. I find it easy to connect with the crowd when I play Bollywood numbers.

Common mistakes beginners make I have seen many newcomers who refuse to play the early time slot because no one is there yet; that is wrong. Even I have had days where I have played in a club of only 15 people. Another common mistake is dropping the peak bangers at the opening itself. People usually get into the mood for the first hour so the song will not have the same effect in the opening as it will have after an hour of playing when people are pumped up. Weird request I was once requested to play a Bhojpuri song at a Bollywood night. I couldn’t. Memorable gig The one I played at Doha a few months back. At the end of the gig, everybody in the club was shouting my name- KD! KD! It was an amazing feeling.

The first step I have loved dancing and take part in all school events. I used to listen to a lot of Rock and Retro. It all started then. I started my carrier at Could 9 in Begumpet and moved to Touch, where I played with the best DJs. In 2012, I joined Over The Moon. It was way back in 2007 when it all started. First gig It was at a New Year’s Eve party at Taj Banjara. Favourite aspect I love playing dance music. No matter what the music genre is. As long as there is some dance element, it works well with the crowd. People

We can see a lot of the best DJs from across the world coming in, and some of the best festivals happening here. People are accepting all kinds of music styles and that is good for everyone- both the crowd and us.

Genesis Since my childhood, I was inclined to music and had a great interest in all genres. As I grew, my interest further developed and I decided to make a career in music. While going through the possibilities, I realized I could relate to Djing, as it enabled me to embrace all genres of music. DJ Journey I started in 2010 at my college’s Annual Day function. The response of the audience was soul-stirring and reinforced my belief that I should pursue this skill seriously. Later, I started playing for events that helped me better my performance and also my industry presence. My work has always spoke for me and made me go places. I must add that playing in Hyderabad is a beautiful experience as the crowd is cordial and relatable. Genre that defines you I enjoy Bollywood music. The other big attraction is the gingerbread house, a prefabricated one, which the children can decorate with the icing that we provide. This we give to schools as well as homes.
