Startup facility and its support The startup facility is a great place to work. It pushes productivity and helps us create a good working environment. Government support Government is taking very good steps on improving the startup ecosystem of the state and the country as well. It would be great if it could provide support on creative/service startups and not put the entire focus on technology and IT alone. One advice to new aspirants. Working in a startup can be one of the wisest decisions you can ever take. It is one place where you will learn every survival skill. It is not easy for sure. But you will go back home with more than what you came in with. So go ahead. Be an entrepreneur and change the world for good. On Incubation Centre It is a great initiative. Since it’s in the nascent stage, it will take a little more time for the startup ecosystem to get popular. The incubation centre is equipped with the necessary infrastructure for startups to move forward without glitches.

Birth of the concept: Bead Music started out with a concept of starting up a student magazine in the city. After a lot of discussions and market research we realized that it wasn't something that we were inclined towards. “I play guitar. I learned it when I was 13. I have played a few gigs in the city and had been a part of a few bands. Studying the Vizag music scene, I realised that there is so much we could do for it. I also realized that there is no perfect platform for artistes where they can showcase their work. Along with Shiv and Vinod, I started out with Bead Music. We are trying our best to unite the world music scene,” says Vijai. Initial Investment: Rs. 3 lakh for Application Development, Video Production, Studio costs, Travel etc.

What they do: Mobile Applications Development

How far is the goal? We are just a few weeks away.

Reason: People are constantly on the move running their businesses and lives. The ubiquitous smart phone is the crucial tool through which they can reach anything. But for fuel, they have no choice but to drive/leg it the nearest gas station. Hence we came up with this unique idea of taking the fuel to the customer wherever he is- on road or at home. Utilizing this facility, he saves his time and energy.

Plan B Next we shall focus on hydrogen fuel cell, hydrocarbon technology and bio diesel. We shall implement new packing technologies for Class-1 fuels.

The other popular products Virgin market. Brand building The tie-up with HPCL will make us popular. Our performance will do the rest. We will take the support of social networks and print media and attend start-up events.

Special offers Products are a bit cheaper when ordered online, compared to shopping in regular markets. However, the rise or fall in fuel rates follows the government diktats. We offer quality products. As far as the quantity is concerned, our measuring containers are graded by Weights & Measuring Department. The quality of the product can be checked through filter paper test and the delivery boy will conduct it for the customer. Also we are planning some more offers like discount coupons and cash backs, once the product hits the market.

Birth of the idea: After seeing stranded motorists on their journey running out of fuel, especially where fuel stations are out of reach, we thought of this service. Initial investment:

Needed support We desperately need mentor support and investor meets.

Rs.1.5 lakh

Government support Huge enough to realize our dreams. Need to extend more support in areas like mentors, financial and legal matters.

Expected returns: At least ten times the expected investment by five years from now.

n this world of all pervasive digital media, booming digital marketing is an obvious fallout. Gone are the days when people would buy a product or go for a service, reposing blind trust in the company. Now the customer wants to know not just what the company says about its product, but what the media, friends, relatives, peers, etc., are saying. Moreover, when marketing is on, can advertisement be far behind? Yet in India the concept of online advertising is at a nascent stage and it takes at least five more years to catch up with the rest of the world. Taking those initial steps is MELON STUDIOS that is coming up with an innovative advertising tool "Togero". Headed by a young lady, this firm caters to all those who want to popularise their products online.

COMPANY NAME: MELON STUDIOS CEO/Co-Founder: V. Sai Mohini Team: Y. Sai Prakash- Co-Founder,CTO, V.Sai Subbarao-Project Analyser, S.Srivatsan-Web Developer, V. Gowtham- Web Designer, P.Muni Rajesh- Designer & Developer Funding: Self-Funded What it does: Digital Marketing Product Reason: Huge scope for online advertising.

red | april 2016 | 48

Other popular products The digital advertising industry is dominated by biggies like Google Ads, Facebook Advertising, Perfect Audience and many other digital marketing agencies. How different is your service? The existing strategies are very expensive and the results are proportionate to the money spent, whereas our product is less expensive and far reaching. With the rise in the number of ad-blockers, we have to see that our advertisement doesn’t get scuttled on the way. Hence we adopt an audiencefriendly approach and see to it that ads reach them unobtrusively, without irking them appearing at wrong times. Since our service is more costeffective, we predict our business would yield significant results. The time and work a client needs to invest in advertising with us, is almost negligible compared to others. This makes us more acceptable.

Startup Village initiative We came to know about SV while we were in the college. We got a good support from the SV, as far as infrastructure is concerned. Also, we get regular reviews done by it to refine our product. The government support We feel that the government should provide infrastructural and technical support to aspiring entrepreneurs right at the college level, especially in towns since the cities are already well equipped with these facilities. SV service We would like to have more mentors available at Startup Village. One advice to new aspirants Don’t get carried away by the news of billion dollar start-ups in the newspapers. Yes, there are a lot of opportunities. But take the plunge only if you are sure you can handle your work all alone. However good the idea maybe, you ensure you build a great

Brand building As of now, we use social media platforms to establish our brand. We would like to concentrate on Youtube, because of its reach to the vast variety of audience. Target client Advertisers in finance, travel, electronics and other businesses.

team. And, never compare your life with an IT employee. Incubation Centre We have great infrastructure support from SV. But, we feel accessibility to mentors and also the engagement activities can be increased. We also wish it is better connected through regular transport service.

Birth of the concept We were working on building apps and 2D games when we realised that there is a lot of market for advertising. There is continuous change that is taking place in the field in which we are doing marketing. It still needs a lot of improvement. It was then our idea took shape. As far as the name is concerned, Melon sprang in my mind when I was working with an app development company Edukinect, in Hyderabad during that summer. I was greatly inspired by the cool fruit. Germination We had to do a lot of analysis to understand our market and how exactly we should differ from our competitors. The idea was clear and hence the prototype was constructed very soon. While we were still developing the prototype, we found an internal demand for our product in Startup Village which made us realise that giving cost-effective and a reliable product would help us survive the competition. Initial investment We started with Rs.2 lakh to buy infrastructure required for our start-up while in college.

Distance to the goal Our product is in validation phase as of now and will take 3-4 months to complete the pilot.

Expected budget from the investor We are quite self-sufficient right now as we are validating our product. We may have to think of investors after some time.

Plan B We are concentrating on our digital marketing product as of now. But, yes, if we have to shift from this, we will venture into game and app development sector.

Expected returns NA Expected recovery NA

KEY SUCCESS TO

Myir Security Systems

Company name: MYIR SECURITY SYSTEMS Founder: Sesetty Murali Mohan Team: Satish, Naresh, Prasad, Sitaram, Balaji Funding: Self Funded: Rs.5 lakh What it does: Supply of Advanced Security Systems Reason: The new buzz word in the industry is "SECURITY”

A

n old man being thrashed by a high handed politician; student copying in the examination; policeman accepting bribe; miscreant breaking into a ATM facility or a lusty boss harassing the woman subordinate- these days everything and anything can be established with hard evidence, replaying a video clipping. With highly sophisticated security systems in place, the dark corners, breeding grounds of crime are totally exposed. Things have changed largely in the world of security and surveillance. “With delinquents mulling over new crimes and evolving new methods to execute them, it becomes imperative we think of ways and tools to counter them,” says Murali. There are people who are constantly working on security covers and shields that resist trespassers and crime. Besides physical, there are digital protections that keep tabs on the ongoings. Myir Security Systems is one such company, which provides security on both short and long term basis.

The other popular products Well, there are many CCTV companies in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. But ours is the first company in Vizag to start with 100% local service. How different are your concept and products? Most of them sell or promote only one brand under the company’s name. whereas we deal with products of different companies. Our company is the first one to be the one-stop solution provider for the supply of security products and services. We deliver customized solutions meeting the individual demands.

Brand building We promote our products and service through social networks, security and safety forums and online advertising platforms like Quikr, Sulekha, Just Dial etc., and through global public campaigns.

Birth of the concept I worked for 12 years in Singapore, had hands on experience with latest gadgets and devices used for surveillance and crime control. I also observed that there is no company with one-stop security solutions in Vizag right now. The city is declared as the Smart City and undergoing great transformation. I think the city should become smart in every possible way. I thought fool-proof security is the need of the hour here. Hence I took up the task of providing this facility. I further developed on the thought and decided to build security systems that suit the customers’ needs and purse.

Target clients Offices, companies, factories, hotels, schools in Districts/Towns/ Panchayats/ Mandals. Government departments like Agriculture and Irrigation, Welfare Schemes – (Rural Development, Urban Development), ITDA Department, Technical Education /ITI/ Vocational Department and Health Department. How far is the goal? As Visakhapatnam is being groomed as Smart City, it is easy for us to promote our innovative technologies that could be adapted by different organisations and markets. Our future products will be automated parking systems, guard patrolling systems, automated boom barriers, smart kiosks with government/private enable payment systems. Plan B I like to incorporate new ideas in delivering security solutions. I am going to start official website for rental of CCTVs where customer need not pay for the whole cost of the product. For example, we provide security at temporary venues like exam centres, venues hosting events like marriage and function halls, holiday planning on daily rental basis. Expectations from the government Security is now a budding field. The government should encourage the local talent and get them involved in executing security solutions for its departments. They can be implemented at much lesser cost. One advice to new aspirants Be positive; everything and anything can be achieved with a positive mindset. Be persistent; believe that

today is going to be my day. Be patient; remember that great things take time to fructify. Your dreams are worth the wait. Be adaptable. You must have an open mind to the awesome possibilities and opportunities out there. Efficacy and affordability SECURITY is the BUZZWORD at the moment. Offices, companies, factories, hotels and business houses are going for digital security solutions. They are quite within the reach of all strata of society. Success rate Security industry is growing day by day with more and more innovative products being launched and so is the success rate of these applications & appliances.

Planning Security on our finger tips is the concept that stayed etched in my mind. We have identified the market where some of the devices may help in providing good security. Catering to them we offer Biometrics, Facial and Finger, CCTV Analog & IP based Cameras, Home Automation Systems, EPABX, PA Systems, Burglary Alarms, Fire Alarms Systems, Conference Room Systems, RFID/Bar Code Solutions, Mobile Apps Staff Tracking Attendance and Mobile Retail Solution with Mobile Printers. Initial investment Rs.5 lakh

f you find someone frowning at his smart phone, you can almost be sure that he is amidst an e-game. Such is the addiction of people to the ‘entertainment in hand’ today that this has become a common sight, especially in places, where protracted waiting is inevitable. The game industry has assumed a great commercial importance, generating phenomenal revenue worldwide. THE RED & BLACK is capitalizing on this new found love of people by innovating new playoffs. The rule of the game can be put in two points - being user-friendly and catering to various age groups.

COMPANY NAME: THE RED AND BLACK Managing Partner: Ramesh.V.J. Relationship: Founder Team: 5-member core team Satyadev, Naveen, Shiva and Phani and 5 interns Funding: Self funded with capital around Rs.4,00,000 What it does: Video Game Development Reason: The video game is the only medium that offers interactive entertainment and it has become phenomenally popular of late. Since the industry is in nascent stage, there is a lot of potential to explore.

GAME CHANGERS

VIZAG

The Red & Black

The other popular products Gameshastra, 7Seas in Hyderabad. Rolecule, Dumadu and Digital Chocolate in Bangalore. Global players like EA, Ubisoft and Gameloft set up their offices in India. Reliance Games, Nazara Technologies and 99 Games are doing well. In AP, we are the only company that is exclusively into game development.

BIRTH OF THE CONCEPT We developed an ecosystem for gamers called Group4Games, where we assemble the gamers regularly, pitch our concept and get the feedback. We develop on it, involving the gamers right from the word go. This serves as research for designing the concepts. Then we go ahead with prototyping and again make the gamers play for a while and on their feedback we rework. The same process is repeated, till we satisfy our early gamers.

How different are your products? In India there are around 100 companies, but no big title is released yet. Each of our games is different in its genre, targeting a different set of players. We rarely face a competition because the market is global. We have a work culture which is creative and appealing. We don't believe in just publishing another game but building a complete gaming eco system that is unique, creative, stable and challenging. Brand building Through global PR campaigns, peer groups, social networks, gaming forums and of course, online advertising platforms like Adwords etc. Target client: Genre base varies from game to game. In general age groups 13+ Distance to goal Within a couple of years, we want to be India’s best. In long term we are looking to expand in all available gaming channels like hardware, e-sports, publishing etc. We have set very big goals. So a long way to go!! Plan B Getting into more collaborations with other game publishers and indie developers On government role To open a bank account, we have to fill forms with columns asking if you are self employed, students or government employees etc. Why doesn’t that column carry an option entrepreneur/startup? That really bothers us. Even our families and friends never identify us as a startup and think we are doing some business because we couldn't find a job. We understand that 90% startups fail. Government should extend a helping hand to them, by providing jobs or temporary relief so that people can take risks and launch new ventures.

On Startup Village Go for more training and exposure activities so that we can network with others and understand the market. Instead of getting everything under a single policy say IT, it’s better to categorise them sector wise as per their activities like Gaming, IOT, Robotics, Mobile Technologies, SAS etc. This helps us get a good grasp on the industry. AP government is moving in this direction. We are happy to note that there is a separate policy for IOT One advice to new aspirants Prepare for a failure and work for success. Evaluate the real demand/problem, understand the customer, be social, maintain networks and be a leader and feel proud to be an entrepreneur. Don’t work on an idea to raise funds, stick to your strong revenue model and prove that it is feasible. Incubation Centre Pros: A world class facility; a perfect place for networking; good knowledge base; access to business hunchos. Cons: Very few events; no onsite mentorship; lack of initial or seed funding; lack of knowledge for startups towards mandatory proceedings like taxes, legal obligations etc.; too few training activities for core issues like market research, management finances, team building and leadership.

Planning We (Ramesh and Satyadev) worked on several games and took a couple of years to observe the industry. It helped us have a solid plan for the startup and build most creative culture in the company. Initial investment Around Rs.4 lakh to develop first and recently released “Bowmen”. Now we are working on two mobile titles for which we raised around Rs.5 lakh. Expected investor’s budget Two more concepts are lined up for which we plan to raise Rs.30 lakh. We propose to expand our graphics team by using the funds and build our own infrastructure. Expected returns Our marketing plans are designed to breakeven within 3 months from the game release. As the funds will be utilized simultaneously for multiple titles, we are assured of a breakeven in one year from the investment. Expected recovery 100% appreciation in next year.

SPIRITUAL BLACK, SOULFUL WHITE By V. Sarada

f ‘the work of art is a scream for freedom’ you get ample evidence of it not only in his work, but also in his persona. Little wonder, his brand image has been “Who Cares?” Naresh Babu Ayyalasomayajula, just Bobby for his friends and fans, is a born artist and self-trained. A qualified architect and software engineer and a staunch believer in the Advaita philosophy, Naresh entered the amazing world of art through spiritualism. He defines art in his own inimitable style and practises it on his own terms. A man of courage and conviction, he had taken a path less travelled and chose charcoal as his medium. Describing his artistic mission in no uncertain terms, he says, “The invisible being exhibited in the visual.”

red | april 2016 | 58

BEYOND ART Naresh, Senior Software Engineer at Quant System India Pvt. Ltd. wears many hats, with impressive number of feathers in them. While he pursues swimming, trekking, sand jogging and travelling with great passion, he excels in cricket, tennis and chess. What is heartening is amidst all this mind-boggling activities, he meets his obligation to the society. Founding and running Antarmukha Society for Creative Art & Culture of which he is the President; protection of indigenous communities; project of providing direct water supply to two villages in Araku, Dummidiguda mandal, Logili and Jangidivalasa; working for charitable societies; sponsoring educational supplies, food and clothes for the needy are only a few of many activities he undertakes. His interests include counselling, spiritualism, psychology and law.

First Stroke It started off with the sketch of my guru Antarmukhanandaji and went on portraying the entire lineage. That explains the inevitable streak of spiritualism in my thought and work. The Journey I was into architecture because art as art has been my passion since childhood. I used to observe fine arts students using different media. I vividly remember an incident- a friend, who burnt paper to ash and created a work of art out of it. That triggered off my interest in using my hands and fingers, instead of brushes. My journey is essentially from art to art and architecture was incidental. My wife Priya (a performing artiste herself), who reposes great faith in me, goads me to take my creativity to the next level. Evolution and Black & White Nothing new to evolve, it had been there always. Expression has nothing to do with colours that are offshoots of black and white. People using colours are only expressing in gradients of black and white. Every day life starts with white and ends in black, telling us colours are transient. Destruction of colours results in black and white with grades of grey, which I insist are the

permanent colours of life. Though difficult to accept, the reality is everything ends in the black and white. Pivot and Perception The life of a portrait lies in the eyes, which is the pivotal point for me. Art to me isn't mere looking at a painting or sketch. It is an inner reflection. Art is like a mirror in which I see myself and my inner emotions. It is not restricted to brush strokes or pencil lines. It is an angle of vision and the way one perceives oneself. Each of us has many emotions with varied gradients. To be precise, art is a canvas in which each of us is an element. Van Gogh said “I dream my painting and paint my dream” but I say “I see my sketch and sketch what I see.” The Most Challenging Part Portraits sometimes look very easy to handle but the simplest of them may turn out to be the toughest in charcoal, perhaps easily done in other media.

EVERY DAY LIFE STARTS WITH WHITE AND ENDS IN BLACK, TELLING US COLOURS ARE TRANSIENT.

This, for instance, happened in my portrait of music legend Ghantasalaone sketch I am not very convinced about till date. I enjoy sketching the portraits of people with varied skin tones. Portraits under good play of light and shadow are less challenging. Message Through Art Even an uninitiated man enjoys my work and that is the take home for me. Your Reaction On....

my Guruji. I feel his blessings alone help me progress in this path and I am sure they will be with me forever. c) putting up first exhibition: Scared, unsure, unprepared and confronted by fear, apprehension and questions. Fortunately, all my fears were proved wrong. Again the credit goes to my wife who insisted on the show. I started believing in the value of my work. At the end of the day, it is all about not my being happy but making people around me happy. Didn’t Banksy aptly say- Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable? d) selling the first piece: I never dreamt of it. The first piece I sold was of Shirdi Sai Baba, which again raised a storm in my mind and made me wonder if I was selling God. I believe each one of us is Him. Selling God to God is a play of consciousness, the most amazing moment. Who is selling? Who is buying? It's all about realisation. Best Compliment It was from my guru Prof.Dr.Ramana. He said, "Your art has life". My wife who keeps telling me "Your art is divine". I take all the compliments as true blessings. Worst Criticism Someone once asked me if that was a photo-shop work. Of course, it is a fantastic compliment for an artist whose work looked like a photograph. I take comment as an opinion and not criticism. Teaching Art Unlike doctors and engineers, artists are either born or self made. When exactly they take off, is what time decides. Artist can become any other professional, if he chooses to be. But all professionals cannot become artists.

a) completing the first piece: Wow. b) displaying the first work: That was of

Falling Standards Art has neither set standards nor death. It is ever evolving and dynamic. It is an exhibition of universal creation. Everything in this world is an artistic creation which is in constant movement. Capturing a moment of this animated world is art. We are the chosen ones to showcase the existing art in a moment. The medium doesn’t matter. Take Back Art lovers, who study a portrait, take back a part of their inner self. In a society, each one of us is influenced by the environment and when they see charcoal effectively portraying their inner self, they feel one with my art. I observe a sense of oneness in people who have witnessed this medium. Understanding Charcoal People are fixed to colours and their mind doesn't accept black and white because of lack of knowledge about this medium. For example, when you set out to make fire, smoke emanates first, turns into coloured flame and becomes smoke again at the end. People only get attracted to the intermittent and transient colours, ignoring the more lasting smoke. Colours are illusions whereas black and white, with grades of grey, are reality.

BRISK RAP Choice of medium I never chose it, the medium chose me. Creative process The process creates, it’s not my creation Time of creation Anything between 2 to 8 hours at one go

Idol and influence No single individual. It is not visible but exists forever within me. Subject criteria It is momentary; no agenda. Muse My beloved wife. The best art tip None so far.

red | april 2016 | 60

IT IS EVER EVOLVING AND DYNAMIC.

Assessment and price tag That is my manager’s job.

IT IS AN EXHIBITION OF UNIVERSAL CREATION.

Best at Capturing the expressions of eyes

ART HAS NEITHER SET STANDARDS NOR DEATH.

Creative blocks None so far but I faced quite a few challenges.

However, the real entertainer was the special guest all the way from Kochi, the famed DJ Savio. It was certainly a power-packed event for the guests who were seen getting drenched in every hues of celebration. What are the challenges you face while singing? My Telugu is more colloquial. While recording Pada Pada, there were a few words I had tough time pronouncing them correctly. A few of them were pretty risky as if spelt wrong they connote abuse in Telugu (laughs out loud). The entire team helped me with the right pronunciation and I could pull it off well with considerable ease. Best compliment All the music reviews praised me for the same number, saying the song is certainly good, but the singer (me) has taken it to the next level. Known people will certainly compliment me, but getting rave reviews from unknown sources, is a real achievement. Anything in Bollywood? Yes, I have recorded many Hindi and even Punjabi songs. They are yet to be released. Usually, it is a slow process, and I can’t really say which one will be released in which movie and when. People’s reaction seeing a Sardar singing a Telugu song? More than singing a Telugu song, they get really surprised when I speak the language. They greet me with great warmth. It is a USP for me. How has been your family’s support? My father Mr.Jaspal Singh and mother Mrs.Gurmeet have always been very red | april 2016 | 67

supportive. Only one thing they insisted on was I should complete education. I couldn’t have come this far without their encouragement Any dream actor for whom you like to lend your voice? I would love to sing for Ranbeer Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and of

I GET A HIGH WHEN I SEE MY AUDIENCE ENJOYING AND APPLAUDING.

course, Shahrukh Khan. However, I like to add that I don’t want my voice to be recognized with any particular actor, rather wish to be known and identified by my voice. Idol music director to work with? Though my biggest dream is to work with A.R.Rehman, I would love to work with every music director. It will give me a wide range of experience. Since you compose too, what subjects interest you? Music should be meaningful and lyrics should touch you, even after 10 years you can listen to it with

same zeal. Recently I have composed a Punjabi score based on Baba Bulleh Shah Poetry.

How easy or difficult it is for a singer to establish in present time? We can see the top actors of film industry are trying new singers, which wasn’t the case earlier. So it is kind of encouragement for fresh talents and that is why there is ood of new singers. On the ip side, today a singer has to pass through the drilling approval session of not just music director and lyricist, but also of director, producer and actor too. For example, the actor will see whether the voice will suit him/her, the producer will look at the saleability of the voice etc. Thus, it becomes a tough competition.

Future plans? I wish to get trained further, specifically in classical genre. There is no end to learning music. Though presently I am focusing on Tollywood and singing in a few movies too (soon to be released), I am open to every film industry.

What lures you to singing? Artiste doesn’t sing to make money. I wouldn’t have left my job in Canada which was earning me sizeable amount of dollars and trade it for singing. I get a high when I see my audience enjoying and applauding. Singing is like breathing, I might forget anything else, but never singing.

oojan Kohli, the young voice behind ‘Pada Pada Pranama,’ the number from Kshanam, is T’wood’s one of the best imports from Vizag. A versatile and multi-lingual young talent, he has all the potential to become the next singing sensation. Armed with a natural flair for music, ability to pen and compose heart-moving lyrics, and infuse high energy to the song, he has penetrated the music industry. We catch up with Poojan who is busy touring cities promoting his latest hit and on the way to churn out some more.

SUCCESS

N TES OF

By Ranita Ray

How come singing? I have been an ardent fan of Bollywood numbers since my school days. When I was in standard nine I tried singing them at home. The first comment was from my sister Tina, who teased me about my voice. Unaffected by it, I kept singing. Two years later, I was singing among my friends. I remember, I used to record my singing on computer just to get an idea how I sounded. During college, I formed a band and won prizes in a number of competitions too. Later, while I was pursuing engineering, I formed a fusion band, Yuga, along with music director Sricharan Pakala. But I never thought I would take it up as a profession. What brought about that change? In Yuga I composed a score Nirbhaya on the infamous and unfortunate Delhi rape case. It was a song with soul stirring lyrics and music. When posted on YouTube, it created ripples. Later, I was approached by Jyoti Smarak Trust to make it the theme song of their campaign against such atrocities. When did your career took professional turn? In 2013, I was approached by Sricharan to sing for the film Kiss. Initially, it was supposed to be a demo and the real track was to be sung by a professional, but AdiviSesh, the hero loved my voice and insisted I sang it. That was how Pilla Bagundi became my debut song.

What next? I went to Canada to study MBA. There I met Harjeet Pabla, singer and composer who trained me in basics of music. On my return to India, by chance I went to the sets of Kshanam and Sesh said “Let’s do a song together.” That was how I came to sing Pada Pada and the anti-climax number. Ramajogayya Sastry wrote the lyrics of the song. Moreover, with the banner like PVP, it got huge reach. Together, it worked as a great combination and Kshanam became a big hit.

Sricharan and you, make a great team. Tell us about your rapport. He was my sister Tina’s classmate and my senior in Tympany School. We were in rival music bands. Later, we formed Yuga together. Most of our songs are based on social issues, Bhrastachaar, EkBanjara, Nirbhaya. I never knew he had Tollywood plans. We are very close friends. But we never let that inuence our work. He calls a spade a spade. He doesn’t approve a song just because I sing it. This is for the second time we teamed up for a film song and both became super hits.

What is your favourite song from the ones you sang till now? Pada Pada Pranama, sung on a very high pitch, is a difficult song. It is an E minor, one can’t really hum along. Not all can sing this kind of songs. It’s a proud feeling that I could render such a powerful number.

If there is a long brewing problem, it is the best time to attend to it. Try to bring some newness into your relationship.

PISCES

(Jan 21‐ Feb 18) It is a vivid and memorable time, but not necessarily constructive. However, the positive effects will prevail on the negative ones leading to a favourable outcome. Love life is much brighter, but maybe not as consistent as you would like it to be. You either face a break‐up or experience a new and very serious crush. Try to minimize the number of conflicting situations in the family. Even if it is obvious that you are right, just give in, keep it quiet and move aside.

Lucky for you: 2, Copper

AQUARIUS

(Nov 22 –Dec 20) Work and love life will experience a negative impact of medium intensity. You are comfortable and confident, but won't achieve the expected results. The problems are solvable. At work nothing exceptional is expected. That is no reason to give up. So pull yourself together. In personal relationships, try to be discreet. Refrain from putting unnecessary pressure on your partner.

MAGIC MIRROR TV Sounds quite interesting, isn’t it? Taking the world of television by storm, this concept is the latest buzzword. It is indeed a television. But when it is not in operation, it appears just like any other regular mirror and you can get dressed up in front of it. The real magic is seen the moment it is switched on, the mirror turns into a TV.

A hit among interior designers, these speakers are top preference as they don’t spoil the look of the room. Adding to its popularity, is its sleek dimension. These speakers are less than 3" thickness, hence they can be easily concealed behind screen or acoustic panels on the side and aren’t visible at all. The look of the room remains neat. There is no compromise on the quality of the output too.

This centralized water heater is unbelievably low on power consumption, hence no more fretting over power bills. Another striking feature is, while heating the water, the heat pump emanates cool air. If one has a room adjacent to the place of its installation, by fixing a pipe this cold air can be used to cool the space, akin to an air conditioner. This product is a great alternative to solar water heater and more effective too. The latter is not too reliable and its disadvantage is it depends on the climatic conditions to heat water. If the climate is cloudy, it stops working. Of course, in such scenario geyser in every bathroom seems to be a functional solution. But it does occupy space as well as add indirectly to the electrical wiring costs. Having a centralised Air 2 water heater, one can do away with all these hassles as it can be installed in corridors or on terrace top.

SILVER PAGODA Also called as the Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morokat (the Emerald Pagoda), it lies within the grounds of the Royal Palace, which is situated near the banks of the Mighty Mekong. Over 5300 pieces of 1.125 kg silver tiles are used to cover its oor and the silver pieces collectively weigh over six tons.

ANGKOR THOM TEMPLE Angkor Thom, a popular tourist spot, was established in the late 12th Century by King Jayavarman VII. This site is situated 1.7 km north of Angkor Wat, within which houses several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. It was the last state temple to be built at Angkor and only Angkorian state temple to be built primarily as a Mahayana Buddhist shrine. Another richly decorated Khmer temple is Bayon.

on of actor Sivakumar and brother of Surya, Karthi too proves that like his kin, he is also meant to be for the silver screen. From his super hit debut movie Paruthiveeran to the latest Oopiri, Karthi rules hearts of his Tamil and Telugu fans. A truly versatile actor, he pulls off even extremely different roles with ease. He can appeal to the mass with a raw character like Paruthiveeran and at other he can be one among the middle class essaying the role of Kali, he can also cause an emotional outburst among his fans with his heart touching portrayal of Srinu. Not just acting, he knows how to woo audience with his singing talent too. Does he have any other ace up in his sleeve? Find out the details here‌.

G N I K A I H T T A H BRE RT

Best compliment you received from the veteran Nagarjuna. My mother is a great fan of him. It was an honour sharing the screen with him. He keeps praising me. In a recent interview he said something like this about me, “Karthi is one of the finest actors I’ve worked with. I would sit and watch him act. At times, he would get so

Congratulation for the massive success of Oopiri. Can you share your feelings? I must thank the audience for giving it the due recognition. It is not easy to adopt a French film - The Intouchables (is one of the greatest 20 films in world history) and then Indianise it and mold to please the South Indian audience. But Vamsi has done a great job. I can say Oopiri gave a fresh lease of life to Telugu cinema. It is a film based on an emotion-soaked script. Fans are loving the emotions and are identifying themselves with the characters. Playing Srinu, a pickpocket who is out of jail on parole was a great experience. The film deals with the bond that develops between poor boy Srinu and Vikramaditya (Nagarjuna), a billionaire who has been rendered a paraplegic in an accident and confined to a wheelchair. It celebrates bromance and is meant for those who want to go on an emotional rollercoaster and come out smiling. We have re-discovered ourselves with this film. In the same scene, you will cry, you will laugh. It is very difficult to write such scenes. There are beautiful moments in this movie. There is a scene in the second half and Nag sir has nailed it. We all cried while shooting that scene. The audience too will. This is my first Telugu film and certainly a landmark in my career. I am proud to be a part of it. I thank PVP sir too.

Earlier, four of your films bombed in a row? How do you handle failure? Who would want to do a bad film? When I sign a movie, I give my best effort and expect it to be a good one. It is a different thing that not all films

You were seen donning almost the same look in consequent five movies, specifically from Paiyaa to Alex Pandian. What made you experiment with your look in Komban? Ha ha ha. You got it right. I reached a point, where I started feeling bored of essaying same type of roles. I was desperately looking for a change in roles as well as in the look. I debuted my makeover with the urban stud in Biryani, then you saw it in Madras in which I sported beard and then the handlebar moustache in Komban. Similarly, while Madras demanded me to shed considerable weight, Komban asked me to gain.

Acting with Tamannaah… Oopiri is my third movie with her. We share a good on-screen chemistry.

Debuting with a Mani Ratnam is a dream for a newcomer, but you declined the offer. Why so? The offer by Mani Ratnam was for the role of Arjun in Aayutha Ezhuthu. Later it was played by Siddharth. Mani sir was looking for someone who would look like Surya’s younger brother. But to his surprise when he saw me I was weighing 90 kg and he was shocked.

I never wanted OOP E TO F I L OF people to know that I was supporting Vamsi in direction too. But during the audio launch, Vamsi became very emotional and could not stop his tears and revealed how he was moved by my gesture. He said that though I was a hero, I helped him like an assistant director. This is the kind of bonding we share.

involved that he would take my feet, place it on his shoulder and massage the way he would do it in the film. That doesn’t come unless you are completely involved.” These words say it all.

red | april 2016 | 62

How was the transformation from director to actor like? A lot of changes! Ameer sir knows how to get the best out of his actor. I was asked to shed weight, grow hair and beard. As I am not a sportsperson, I had tough time in working out. I remember for several weeks I used to get trained for six hours of rigorous daily regimen. Soon I started enjoying it. Not just the physical appearance, the efforts were even to get into the skin of the character, I started roaming around

When did you thought of acting? I was getting offers for acting, but direction appeared more interesting to me. There were times when Mani sir advised me not to reject good offers. My father also felt I must try acting and once he said something which elbowed the actor in me, he said, “One can always direct films but you won’t get a chance to act once you grow older”. Next thing, I found myself in the lead role in Paruthiveeran by Ameer Sultan.

I remember him saying, that I would look like Surya’s elder not younger brother. Hence, instead of giving acting a try there, I asked for assisting him in direction and he agreed. I continued to work on the same film and its Hindi version Yuva as the assistant director.

The film earned you lot of accolades, even an entry to Berlin film festival. What was your reaction? I was and still very thankful for the appreciation I received for my debut film. I give the major chunk of credit to Ameer Sir. From developing the correct body language to dialect, he helped me in every aspect. He ensured that my acting should be natural. I was one among the audience in Albert Theatre to watch the

movie on its release. There was complete silence during the 20 minute climax. Next, I saw them standing up and applauding. I was in tears.

Do you feel dancing has also become a crucial skill to get popularity for an actor? It depends on what kind of roles you are taking up. Till now, people have liked my casual style of dancing. I was told by many that my dance movements in Paiyya were good. However, I haven’t stopped myself here; rather I am on a constant effort to improve my dancing skills.

You sang for the film’s Telugu version, was it different? I felt the same amount of excitement in singing both. I loved singing in Telugu. “A raw voice like yours will be different and the new avour will be refreshing,” said Yuvan to me. I am glad, the audience loved it.

on the film sets was nothing but fun like the time from our school days. I felt it as an extension of home and I used to jam old Ilayaraja songs all the time. It so happened, that one fine day Yuvan, the music director and Venkat asked me to sing a song for the film and I agreed. Let me tell you, Venkat feels I am a cool singer (laughs). In fact in Paruthiveeran, I sang a few lines in the oor ora puliyamaram number and it was Yuvan’s music.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Other popular products I believe almost everything in technology falls under the cloud umbrella, whether they are mobiles Apps like WhatsApp or Amazon Web services. From a consumer standpoint it is mobile apps and from enterprise viewpoint it is Amazon web services. How different is your concept? Our service is quite unique, especially considering the cloud niche that we are currently focusing on. Our concept complements the services provided by the major cloud players. Brand building As our primary customer base is enterprise at this point of time, we focus on SEO, showcase our company and our offerings at business events. Word of mouth goes a long way. Target client Enterprise customers. How close are to your goal? Our company is still what one will refer as a “start up”. Certainly on the right track, doing most, if not all the things which are heading the business in the direction where we want it to be. We do have concrete goals for the next two years. If we speak in a years’ time I will be happy to share more specifics. Plan B No Plan B. Expectations from the government The ask is simple, make things easy for startups, improve our infrastructure and most importantly

put measures in place to improve our education system. The key to success is the team/people who work for the company. Our company has to hire from the talent pool available in the market. Unfortunately, today there is a big disconnect between the education system and where the world stands, especially in the area of technology. Our company provides extensive training to the staff after bringing them on board. We conduct seminars on a regular basis to generate awareness about cloud computing/communication skills and train aspiring individuals. This will hopefully strengthen Telengana, India and the world at large. Government funding to support these initiatives will make a huge difference. Advice to aspirants Be persistent in pursuing your dreams and do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do it. Learn as much as you can but do not miss out on the fun as it is equally important. Most importantly focus on knowledge.

Birth of the concept “I have been in the IT industry for 17 years and have spent the last few years extensively helping 500 companies migrate to and manage their cloud environment. As I went about my job, I realized it was a natural transition for a business to opt for managed services once they are on the platform. The two main motivations for a customer to be on cloud are cost reduction and simplicity. Managed services help the customer further reduce their operational cost, takes them away from the complexity of managing their cloud infrastructure and that is where we come in. After the initial inception, I invited the immensely talented founding members Muqtedar Amir Khan and Timothy Bethea to formulate our business,” says Purvez Mohammed. Planning Certainly, there are many moving parts to set up a new business. The key to success is a strong team. You may have the greatest idea but it will go nowhere without the right individuals to execute it. So the first step was to form a strong executive team. Then we started planning for the rest - the customer base we would initially target, the sales/marketing strategy, our pricing structure, etc. Initial investment That is a trade secret. Expected budget from the investor At this stage we are not looking for an investor. Expected returns We are still new and based on our projections, the expected returns can vary between 10 - 25%

rom hiring a Harley-Davidson for a day to treat the biker, to hosting a surprise book launch and signing for a closeted poet – if you have something special you want to do for your special someone, these are the people who make it happen. Oye Happy, the brainchild of Harshvardhan Khemani and Varun Todi, is a company which helps you come up with something unique and customizes it to give it a personal touch.

What it does: Surprise people for a living... seriously! Reason: Gifts are no longer just a social obligation but are crucial to build an emotional connect. The gifting industry in India has not evolved to keep up with the changing customer demands. People would rather spend on creating memories rather than on expensive material presents. We bridge that gap.

red | april 2016 | 34

From booking billboards in the city for people who want to announce to the world how special their loved ones to sending a professional guitarist to his or her doorstep to make the special day a little extra special with a musical surprise – they do it all. Next time you have some occasion coming up and cannot think of an idea – you know exactly whose door to knock at to seek help.

The other popular products There are currently very few companies in India in the experiential/customised gifting space and none offer the kind of products we do. Exciting Lives and Giftxoxo are probably the only big players attempting to change the perception of gifting in India. How different is your concept? When it comes to gifts, one size does not fit all. We develop different categories of gifts and experiences for different types of people. You can treat the foodie to a private pani puri stall while an adrenaline junkie can avail of a day at an adventure

park or an all-expense paid hiking trip to the hills. We are also trend-setters as we are constantly innovating. We have introduced "social surprises" where you can choose to share a meal or sponsor the education of underprivileged children on behalf of someone instead of picking a conventional gift for your loved one. We are working on virtual gifts you can share with anyone in any corner of the world. Brand building Our marketing has been largely restricted to our Facebook page and word of mouth references. The viral nature of the concept often made people Google search and approach us. We have built a brand where people look upto us for out-of-the-box gifting solutions and know they can count on us. Keeping every

client more than satisfied has turned into our calling card. It has led to a large number of referral clients even though we have no loyalty programme in place. Target client Largely in the age group of 21- 40 years which is the social media generation and usually are hard pressed for time. We have recently ventured into the wedding and festive gifting space. How close is your goal? We are already a sustainable and profitable company and have reached 130 cities across the country without a large marketing spend. We are the first search result in Google for "surprises India". We are treading fast towards our goal of becoming a market leader in the Indian gifting industry. Plan B? What's wrong with our Plan A? (smiles) Expectations from the government The current government has been very friendly and encouraging towards startups with its policies and programmes and hope this trend continues. Advice to aspirants The only advice we have for entrepreneurs is that they should be truly passionate about the enterprise they are getting into. If you’re willing to invest several years of your life in an idea, you need to enjoy every moment of it.

Birth of the concept Oye Happy began as a crazy idea which evolved into a business in almost an autopilot mode. It started as a passion project when Harsh and Varun (who is known for his best surprise parties) were approached by a friend to welcome her fiance. They actually held a mock swayamvar at the airport! The concept spread by word of mouth and clients started approaching us. Then we launched our e-commerce portal. Planning A lot of experimentation. We wanted all our products to fit customer demands and be truly unique so right from conceptualizing the idea to the finished product - we create most of it in-house or have exclusive vendor tie-ups. The same thing holds good for the experiences where all of them are tailored for Oye Happy clients. Being the first in India to constantly innovate gifts and experiences, we focus on two things - "create an awesome gift" and "market it creatively." Initial investment Rs.30 lakh Expected budget from the investor Rs. 3 cr. Expected returns We are a profitable company and we want to use the investment to expand sustainably and quickly. Expected recovery As a sustainable e-commerce company, we are looking at quickly increasing the profits to show a stronger business model and get funding.

Pocket Change

No CHANGE P

eople who travel abroad always come back with some extra currency which is of no use to them later. Picking up an idea from there – Jaideep Singh Bachher and Andrea Loh, two lawyers by qualification established Pocket Change. Later, Hrishikesh Huilgolkar was brought on board to look into the tech aspect of the company and make things happen. The company has an answer to the issue of redundancy of foreign currency. Pocket Change is all about getting travelers deposit the unused money at its kiosks. Later, it gets transferred electronically back to the user through a secure online transaction. They offer direct bank transfers and have your change to be sent to Bitcoin, PayPal, UBER credit, donations and gift cards, etc.

Company name: Pocket Change (Singapore) Private Limited CEO: Jaideep Singh Bachher Relationship: Co-Founder Funding: Bootstrapped. Looking to raise Series A soon. What it does: Pocket Change seeks to set up self service kiosks at departure terminals of international airports where users can drop off leftover currency before leaving the country and choose from a variety of places where it can be transferred digitally. Reason: Chronic leftover change of travellers. Most international traveller face the issue of leftover currency that they don't know what to do with after coming back. We seek to take care of that problem.

red | april 2016 | 38

The other popular products None. We are the industry leader. Basically, we had sensed an opportunity where one didn't previously exist. We have created a market here. How different is your concept? It is all digital and it is a self-service kiosks. Brand building Talking to print media, especially magazines for now. (smiles) But on a serious note, this, like any other startup will eventually need brand building – but we are not there yet. I do not think we have developed a brand right now.

Having said that, when we feel we have developed one, we’ll be branding through travel websites, airport advertisements and articles. Target client Every traveler who goes abroad. How close are you from goal? Still a long way to go. What is your Plan B? Pitch the idea to an existing bank and take it from there. On startup facility and its support This is my second startup and I have known the Hyderabad startup crowd for

a while. We were accepted by the prestigious t-Hub and will soon be moving to work from there. Expectations from the government Ease of obtaining licenses. That would be critical. One advice you give to aspirants. John E. Lewis once famously said, "If not us, then who? If not now, then when?" If you don't do it, someone else will do it. There are no failures in the startup world. Everything teaches you something. Take the risks, it's totally worth it.

Initial investment Roughly Rs.20 lakh. Expected budget from the investor We're looking to raise somewhere close to $500,000 - $1,000,000 in our first round. Expected returns We intend to have revenues of at least $2,500,000 a month within 2 years. Expected recovery At least three years from now .

Birth of concept Both Andrea and I wanted to do something with currency. I travelled quite a bit last year and found that some money was always leftover. So it started off as a simple coin to notes idea and then changed from there to where we are today. Planning Plenty. We have still not started commercial operations but were clear from the outset that this is a global idea and will be required to be set up outside India. Singapore was a logical choice, since both Andrea and I are lawyers and figured that that was the best place to start up a company of this sort. Since we didn't have technical knowhow, we needed someone on the tech side, that is why Hrishi came in as a co-founder.

Strategic Engagement & Event Solutions

N

ot always can you turn your own vision into reality with the help and guidance of a third party. Nitin Sharma and Lalit Chadha are two friends who came together to be that ‘third party’ to help people translate their dreams and make them come alive – and that is how Strategic Engagement & Event Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (SEES) came into being.

Company name: Strategic Engagement & Event Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (SEES) Co Founders: Nitin Sharma and Lalit Chadha Funding: Bootstrapped

They work round-the-clock to make meetings and events lively enough for their attendees and planners. They work to bridge the gap between technology and human interaction through the lifestyle of an event to create experience and engagement through web and online presence, digital marketing, mobile technology and social media interactions.

red | april 2016 | 40

What it does: Drives Engagement of Attendees (people attending events) and stakeholders alike in the context of meetings and events using such elements as Gamification, user device based event technology and most importantly, fun! Reason: The world is changing with the invasion of technology. The nature of meetings is altering as a direct result. The meetings industry is among the fastest transforming industries as a direct result of the shift in socio-economic-cultural framework. The demographic shift in who attends these meetings is witnessing a monumental shift, as the world is younger than ever before! Lecturing simply is not the preferred mode of learning any more, period. More importantly, they would like to be seen and heard when they attend events. We make it a possible.

The other popular service Coming to think of it, we don’t quite have any other company doing this kind of work. We are probably the first in this field – as far as our knowledge goes, at least. How different is your concept? We are focusing on a range of affordable event technology that addresses this unmet need of the new age event attendee, clubbed under our technology domain called SEES-hub, one of our six solution offerings highlights of which, being the Event Technology hub and Meeting Design solutions. For example, one of our products focuses on social media content generation for our clients. We all know today that user generated content marketing is arguably the most effective of all mediums. However, this is a tricky terrain. What if the content is not flattering to your efforts of organizing an event? What if the SM platform used was left out altogether? Our product elevates the power of the ‘#’ like never before, capturing content from multiple SM channels, putting it together in one seamless feed in real time!

a trade body, a not for profit organization or a governmental body/organisation.

the market needs to be educated and it may take some time but we are game for that.

How far is your goal? We are in our infancy having been just over a month to go public with our offering. We have set our goals for FY 2016-17 and would like to take one step at one time. Yes, being an entrepreneur opens up a whole world of opportunities that we are keenly observing and we hope to give you a great story an year from now.

On Startup facility support We have not yet applied for a start up status which earns a 3-year income tax holiday as its prime benefit but we are all for the ‘Start Up India Stand Up India’ initiative of this Government.

Plan B Ha! You got us thinking now?! To be honest, confident as we are of the services and products we are offering, we haven't thought about a Plan B. Yes,

On government support Immense and at the outset we must thank the farsightedness of our two states. They are doing their job well by offering support and lending an ear. One advice to aspirants Dream big and believe in yourself. Today is as good as any day to take the plunge.

Target clients Organisers, who consider meetings as an important part of their overall business strategy are our target clients. It may be a corporation, an association,

Birth of the concept Having been part of the conference industry for long, we were not satisfied, as meeting planners, with the results that were being generated by events. A lot of money was being spent but the ROI was questionable.

Initial investment It is a business that does not require much initial capital because it is a service. Our approach is to keep it bootstrapped and invest as we go along. Our initial investment was Rs 5 lakh.

Planning As regards our business plan and ideation, it took us around a year.

Expected budget from the investor An expected budget if we were to go the investor route will range between Rs 50 lakh and 1cr. for the first year.

Expected returns We plan to be profitable in our first year of operations with a turnover of Rs.5 cr in the first year, growing 100% year on year for the next 3 years.

f it is variety in food that you are looking for, the place to go is United Kitchens of India (UKI) has almost eight types of cuisines that lie close to the hearts of many foodies. As a true multi-cuisine restaurant, UKI specialises in Rajasthani, Punjabi, Kerala, Bengali, Telangana, Chetinad, North Indian and Chinese. Without being ostentatious or overly lavish, the unique restaurant is designed in a contemporary theme with a perfect touch of tradition. With a wellbalanced, comfortable seating arrangement, there’s enough room for privacy, without feeling completely isolated. The variety in the a la carte menu guarantees an excellent dining experience for both lunch and dinner. An ideal place to check out with the whole family, whether it is for some yummy Chinese flavours, a North Indian specialty or any type of Indian curry, this eatery can take you from hungry to happy!

Funding: Investment of each of the five partners and bank loans What it does: It’s a multi-cuisine restaurant that brings together eight different cultures and its varied foods, all under one roof.

The other popular products The food industry is rapidly growing, and especially in Hyderabad. With the city expanding by the second, there is something or the other that is opening up at every corner. Drive around the roads of Banjara or Jubilee Hills and you will find restaurants dime a dozen today. How different is your concept? We boast about the fact that our menu has authentic food from Rajasthan, Punjab, Kerala, Bengal, Telangana, Chetinad, North India and even Chinese. Apart from the food from these seven states, the cocktails and mocktails that we offer are popular. We have a coffee shop, lounge and restaurant all in the same compound – a giving enough to spoil our guests with choice. Brand building We believe that the product speaks for itself. Offer something that is of high quality and maintain it and you will see it selling itself. So for us, honestly, very little effort goes into our brand building except

for the fact that we have made our presence felt on all the interactive platforms and have been constantly engaging with our customers.

Birth of the concept Hyderabad is fast developing and is a cosmopolitan city with people from different states and regions settling down here. UKI was conceptualized to provide a common platform to bring in different cuisines and cater to the needs of the increasing cosmopolitan crowd.

Target client: Corporates, families and the younger crowd – basically anyone who enjoys food and looks forward to stepping out for a meal to enjoy a complete experience.

Planning Once we had conceptualized the idea for UKI, we undertook a survey and realized that people from Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, AP and Bengal were predominantly present here. We incorporated those cuisines in our menu. Another thing we take pride in is the fact that we bring chefs from all these states to ensure authenticity.

Have you reached your goal? All thanks to the niche concept of bringing different cuisines under one roof, we have been able to capture our target audience in a very short span. Strength of the team? After the five partners who are more or less running the show. We have close to 105 putting the entire thing together. Advice to aspirants Anyone can start a restaurant, but to come with a concept is what is important. They should work on and study their concept properly before going ahead with anything. Also, it takes 6 to 8 months for a business to settle, so they need to have sufficient working capital. One shouldn’t compromise on that as that will affect the quality of operations. So be patient and hang on there.

Initial investment Rs. 2 cr. Expected budget from the investor We are in the process of stabilizing the operations and will then focus on expansion. But at present, we do not require any funds. Expected returns 20 to 25% of ROI Expected recovery 4 - 5 years

REVIEW

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

O

n March 19, 2016, the doors of Vijay Rana’s franchisee and Label Bella opened in Hyderabad – this being designer Vijay Rana’s second outlet after his agship store, while a first ever for Label Bella. Bella S Menezes, designer shares her thoughts, “‘Whosoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping’ is a famous quote by Bo-Derek and is so apt for Vijay Rana/Label Bella showroom. We promise to offer to our clients ‘the comfort of shopping’ that they ever wish to experience.” Operating from a 6,000 sqf showroom at a prime location of Banjara Hills, their retail philosophy is to cater to every age and every size. They feel that many non-zero-sized customers believe that designer garments are made for model body types and they’re here to prove them wrong |on that. Their collections are custom made, suiting and catering to all body types.

red | april 2016 | 26

Label Vijay Rana is a well-known name in the fashion industry today, with his USP being the cuts he gives, using handloom cotton, which is best suited for any weather condition. His designs are tough to match with other producers and make the garments extremely difficult to replicate. Besides Label Bella, the garment collection carries vibrant colours, digital prints and the finishing is that of international level. Purely, western garments that suit Indians. The décor at the store is a treat to one’s eyes as it comes with the fusion of palaces/temples and a bold touch of contemporary. On offer are Indian garments along with enough western collections and hope to introduce menswear soon. Timings: 10:30am - 8:30pm Email: info@labelbella.com | Ph: +91 9618063944

ndia has become the fastest growing country, only after US, when it comes to startups. A study was conducted in 2015 by Compass which showed Bengaluru as the fastest growing ecosystem in terms of seed investments and VCs. With a growth index of 4.9, it left Singapore (1.9), Paris (1.3), and Tel Aviv (2.9) far behind. The government has had a solid plan to project India as the next start up destination. With the ‘Startup India’ buzz adding freshness to the country’s business landscape, raising hopes of millions of entrepreneurs who have limited means but big dreams. Time appears to be ripe for them as the government is putting in place mechanisms to ensure fast clearances. We sure are excited to see the way things are going and touch base with a few of the young entrepreneurs to understand their work better.

FLOWERS BloomAway

F

lowers are symbols of love and happiness and we send them to people because we want to show them that we care. BloomAway, makes gifting flowers easy and simple. One gets fresh flowers in beautiful, handcrafted bouquets in awesome packages, with hand written notes and great optional add-ons. They believe that flowers should look beautiful when one wishes to tell someone that they are thinking of them. Brainchild of Shilpa Sharma, who now has her husband, Rohan Yeggina, on board with her, started this venture a few months ago. Lack of professionalism and punctuality in online flower delivery model helped them in identifying the gap and they wished to up the game. They are live in Hyderabad and will be launching operations in other cities over the next few months.

The other popular products There are a few big players in the industry, but haven’t innovated and they are stuck in the same cycle for the past decade or two. There are a lot of other florists who are online but they are not much in the reckoning. BloomAway sees a big opportunity in consolidating the market and giving an overall better experience of sending and receiving flowers. How different is your concept? There is currently no player in the market who is doing on-demand delivery within 90 minutes. When we started off, we ordered flowers from all the sites possible and to our surprise, we didn’t get even a single bouquet on time. COMPANY NAME: BLOOMAWAY | CEO- Shilpa Sharma Co-founder: Rohan Yeggina Funding: Raised one round of angel funding from a Vizag investor . What it does: On demand delivery of flowers and curated gifts.

red | april 2016 | 30

And worse, the quality of flowers and cakes etc. were absolutely appalling. For us the product, delivery and process are very customer-driven. We give them options to pick up whatever they want, and we’ll make it with those flowers in that budget. We have also tied up with a topnotch graphic designer in Delhi who helps us come up with new designs every 20 days, so there is a constant change in what we offer. We have Ikebana experts, who help us keep the design fresh. Brand building Currently we are marketing through social media. And yes, a lot of word of mouth. People who order our stuff like it so much that they spread a word and that has really helped so far. We also did a campaign around Valentine’s Day at a couple of restaurants where we had nicely designed giveaways of single stems to couples. That did give us a lot of traction. Target clients From a 15-year-old kid who is sending flowers to his grandmother to a 65 year-old-man, who is buying it for his wife. How far is your goal? We are about 6 months away from achieving our targets for Hyderabad.

Plan B No! We actually quit our secure jobs to do this. It is something we quite like doing and are totally committed to disrupting the market. Advice to aspirants We ourselves are relatively new. We would suggest that you don’t ever go out with just an idea. Go out with a concept to show people- a prototype, a pitch deck, a really basic working model and have a demo in place. Bootstrap your way as far as possible. It will help you work through challenges and also teach you a lot about financial discipline. Birth of the concept When my husband, Rohan and I were dating, every time he sent me flowers, the florist delivering the order would end up messing it up. Either the flowers were wilting or wrong flowers were sent. There were also times when the order reached a day or two late. When ee identified this gap, we decided to do something to change this. Planning My mom is from Ikebana Ohara Society and this helped us a fair bit in connecting with vendors and flower farms. In terms of

planning for the company, it majorly included going to suppliers of flowers. Delhi and Bangalore are the major hubs, so we went to all the places to see what was available – when and where. Another important aspect is the packaging, so we experimented with different forms and things to make it look as different and fresh as possible. We have navigated through various corners of the city to figure out the delivery schedules and route maps. Planning is an ongoing process and execution will never stop. Initial investment We spent Rs.10-15 lakh of our savings initially to get thing off the ground. We raised a small round from an investor who believed in our idea and that has been quite a validation of our model. Expected budget from the investor We are looking at raising Rs.2 cr as we plan to expand to six more cities by the end of this year. What we have in our favour is the fact that we are a loss making , discount-driven model. Expected returns 25% Expected recovery? Every city that we hit, we have a financial plan with a model where we allocate a certain budget, leading us to be profitable in about nine months to a year.
