Moreover, you can avail Zumba Step only and only at FFS.” Zumba Step

This is seldom attempted, though we all know that that would make kids look forward to attending school and make them go beyond memorizing topics or scoring marks. Parents, that one school which imparts education beyond textbook learning is The Harbor International School. Built in a picturesque location, away from the chaos of the city life, this 5-acre campus is 400 metres from Anandapuram Y-Junction on NH5 towards Bheemili. An architectural marvel designed in an L-shaped structure, the 3-floored school (Nursery to X)

EXCERPTS Did you want to become an actress? It sounds like a cliché but I used to dance in front of my mirror. Yes, I have always wanted to act. I am a 90’s kid who is guilty of having grown up dancing to Salman. Shah Rukh & Govinda’s so-called tacky songs, which I felt were awesome! On not winning the Miss India contest I was disappointed but my eventual aim, like I said, was to be an actor. I am happy I realised the dream. My journey is amazing compared to my fellow contestants, so I feel not winning the crown was good for me. Parents' response Though skeptical, they never ever discouraged me. Some relatives and people were feeding them with things like, “Oh, this happens in the industry. How can you let your

Tiger can be shy. Did he open up to you? Tiger is not a shy or introverted guy. He’s a lot of fun and mischievous. He was cracking jokes on the sets all the time. On dancing… The regular dancing around trees that heroines do is the toughest thing to do. It isn’t easy; if you don’t ace it you will end up looking silly. Imagine singing and dancing round trees. You have to be convincing. You need to enjoy and let go off every inhibition. A heroine has to do everything — she dances, acts; so I do it too. On Tollywood The Telugu film industry has been fantastic. Right from the technician to senior actors, people have been really helpful, warm and supportive. How did Savyasachi happen? Director Chandoo Mondeti called me up after watching Munna Michael. When I listened to the script, I felt it was new and refreshing. That is why I accepted the film. It was such a big opportunity. Coming from nowhere, I got to work with such experienced people. I am glad that my role was eshed out well and I am happy to choose this as my debut film in Tollywood. Your take on the Vanishing Twin Syndrome element in Savyasachi? I was so stunned by the concept that I asked my director if it’s for real. He told me it’s indeed there in medical science. On working with Madhavan and Bhumika I feel fortunate to work with such experienced actors. They were red | feb-march 2019 | 52

encouraging and supportive. Even Naga Chaitanya, who comes from one of the illustrious families of the industry, was down-to-earth and helpful on the sets. I take this opportunity to thank each one of them. Are you like Niikki in the movie Mr.Majnu? I am exactly the opposite of that character. I am not going to run behind the boy so much, I will make them work very hard.

How similar or different are they? They have similar mannerisms which are, of course, expected, given that they have grown up together. But as individuals, they are different. I am aware of the jokes and memes around me working with brothers because I get tagged on Instagram and Twitter. How has Savyasachi and Mr. Majnu changed you? Savyasachi and Mr.Majnu are special to me. Both these films gave me different working experiences and helped me understand Telugu cinema. I am looking forward to more work in Telugu now.

Working with director Venky One of the major reasons of understanding the scenes, the words I use, situation I was in is Venky. Venky being young helped that contemporary love story. There was a lot of pain in the character I portrayed. It all came from the dialogues, if you understand it, it will tear you up; there is no way you won’t feel emotional. With this film, I understood and found my own little methods of acting. I laughed a lot on the sets but cried in the film. On working with brothers Naga Chaitanya & Akhil Naga is a gem of a person. He is full of positivity and ensured that I felt comfortable. Akhil made sure that I enjoyed my work. He has energy and is very kind at heart.

TIGER IS NOT A SHY, INTROVERTED GUY. HE’S A LOT OF FUN AND MISCHIEVOUS. HE WAS CRACKING JOKES ON THE SETS ALL THE TIME.

He took them as learning experiences and bounced back, focusing on his targets. Besides imposing housing and commercial complexes, the firm has built great reputation. Standing on two strong pillars- honesty and quality of construction, his firm earned the respect of innumerable customers. Contributing his mite to his field, he has been a pro-active member of CREDAI, National Real Estate Development Council and Kakatiya Cultural Association. Hence, his insights on construction field and real estate, and life are well-founded, profound and hard earned. “It is hard to

EXCERPTS Cyclone effect Brought up in an agricultural family, I knew nothing about trade. Though the world of business always fascinated me, I pursued veterinary science in Bangalore. Then I joined my father in his agricultural endeavours, which I dub as a learning field. I came to Vizag in 1994 to try my hand in businesses. However, let down by the experiences, I returned to my native village Nadipudi. I had seen nothing but only failures for almost a decade. It was the 1996 cyclone which devastated my village and crops that brought me back to the business world. I determined to move on, taking my losses in education, businesses and agriculture in my stride.

talk of ups and downs, and storms and calms of two decades in one breath. I can only offer a few glimpses,” says the realtor in his typically stoic manner.

Second innings Thus destiny brought me back to the city, this time for better prospects.

Initially, I came with the intention of taking up distribution for Continental Coffee. But it did not take off. Then, I approached my relative Mr.C.P.Rama Rao, a business tycoon, who had his fingers in many pies. I was inspired by him and his accomplishments. He, in turn, introduced me to Mr.A.Ravi, who was doing well in the construction field. Mr.Ravi and Mr.C.P.Rama Rao made me a partner in their upcoming projectLotus Plaza, nudging me into this wonderful ‘real world.’ This first venture on VIP road, a five-storied residential complex, opened the oodgates of opportunities for me. After that, as the cliché goes, there was no looking back. In 1998, Mr.Ravi shifted to Hyderabad and I took a site from Mr.Rama Rao and went ahead with another ventureChaitri Complex.

Into real estate In the same year, we acquired land in Madhurawada and entered real estate business. Taking up projects back-toback, I successfully completed ventures in and around Vizag. My ventures are unique and carry my stamp and signature, besides my surname Chilukuri. Well-earned experience Experiences, good or bad, impart valuable lessons to us. As I climbed the ladder of success, rung by rung, I earned experience and understood that real estate is more viable and lucrative when compared to the construction field. However, that didn’t deter me from taking up construction assignments. The twin apartment complex Suharika-I and II on Nowroji Road stands testimony to it. We have successfully completed six construction ventures and seven layouts. Dream project My extensive travel across the globe broadened my horizons and vision. With this exposure, I decided to take up a mega project which is unique and outof-the box. Moreover, it is time I gave back to this city that has welcomed me with open arms. So, I wanted my dream project to be here. I crafted a project embellished with every conceivable amenity that is required for the modern life. It is packaged so beautifully that many NRI investors from all over the world are raring to purchase plots and ats here. I joined hands with three more partners and started acquiring land for Brundavan Estates in 2005, which sprawls over 130 acres now and is developed in ten

phases. Another uniqueness of this venture is that it is VUDA’s prerogative to take private land and develop it. But here VUDA gave me land and the rare privilege of developing it. Toughest and easiest Every project comes with its own set of problems and turns out to be a different experience. The narration will run into innumerable pages, if I start dwelling on each and every one of them. Gratifying aspect I have been giving direct employment to 20 people. On an average, I give livelihood to as many as

70 workers on a daily basis. I engage the best architects, engineers and technicians. Fortunately, they all stay loyal to our firm and see my projects through with great dedication and zeal. I am proud of my team for its great commitment and professionalism. USP My personal scrutiny at every level of construction stands me in good stead. Besides using the products of best brands, I ensure that they pass through stringent lab tests. I have earned the trust of my customers, painstakingly meeting all their demands. That is my

Mr.Pawan Kumar, MD, Sprint Exports Pvt

Ltd., (SEPL), and you know he means

business. It is no surprise at all that he has made it big in the world of exports in less than a decade. The sure footed Pawan has been clear in his thought and firm in step right from the childhood on two issues - a) He has to be an entrepreneur and b) He has to live in his native land. If it is passion that has driven him to trade world, it is patriotism that keeps him chained to India. This clarity spills into his speech too. Neither does he use an extra word nor does he skip a minute detail. Keeping his narrative absolutely jargon-free, precise and crisp, he walks us through the seafood export scenario in general and his own accomplishments in particular. He makes the dry technical recitation so interesting that the hour slips off in a jiffy.

The trajectory When I returned home, after obtaining an MBA degree from Halls University, London, U.K, I found a great potential in the seafood export industry. So I took the plunge, taking a processing unit on lease in Bhimavaram, the stronghold of aquaculture, in 2004. Shuttling between Vizag and Bhimavaram, I used to fulfill my filial and trade obligations. We started on a low key, sending just a few containers and accounting for less than Rs.5 cr turnover. We were dealing with small red | feb-march 2019 | 58

volumes till I established my own facility at Anandapuram in 2011. I bought a sick unit - Suvarna Rekha and set up my processing facility, after giving it a massive facelift. Our turnover doubled with every passing year and in 201718, we touched Rs.760 cr. Leaps and bounds It has been a great going for seafood exporters in India for the past few years. Introduction of vannamei shrimp variety has ushered in glad tidings. Andhra farmers, who are highly innovative, evolved their own technology. The phenomenal growth in volumes

saw Guntur, Krishna and East and West Godavari districts emerging as the lucrative centers. India is the largest vannamei producer and AP accounts for 60% of the vannamei produce. Bitter lesson We started our business in the domestic market in 2004. Setting up an office in Delhi, we used to distribute seafood to J&K, Jaipur, Bhopal, Lucknow, Kanpur and Meerut. We even supplied our retailers with freezing units. Much to our chagrin, we found them switching it off in the nights to save electricity, which led to the rotting

This has to be attributed to the sheer hard work and determination of the bureaucrat who leaves his significant footprints in every arena he works. The region is already in know of his competence, caliber and innovative concepts. As the Vice-Chairman of VUDA (now VRMDA), he had gifted the region with valuable assets. Notable among them

His Brief The CM gave me a 2-word mantra when I took over this organization which came into being to uplift the tribal community- ‘Branding’ and ‘Marketing.’ He gave me all the freedom to reach these targets. My task is to implement his vision. I studied marketing modules of giants like Wal-Mart & Baba Ramdev and adopted a few strategies. Package perfect I learnt packaging is important. If done in the right way, the wrapper itself catches a number of eyeballs. So, I went for exquisite packaging, embellishing the wrapper with tribal art. This gives us an extra edge of promoting the native art, which has hitherto remained under wraps (pun unintended). Our packages display the tagline- Resources from tribes of Andhra Pradesh. Corporate-style outlets & marketing on wheels are other initiatives I have successfully taken up. I did my bit, by adding cosmetic value to them.

important to ensure that it generates the intended income for them. Missing link Unfortunately, we don’t have an effective mechanism to gauge how far they are utilising the facilities. A project becomes a success only when its economic cycle reaches a break-even point. Heart touching phenomenon I see the two ends of the spectrum & find the contrast stark. The voiceless, shelter-less, nutrition-less, impoverished denizens, dwelling in the remote corners, slog day in and day out to supply the most nutritious forest produce to the urban elite. My heart goes out to those emaciated and impoverished people working in our processing centres.

Unforgettable incident I selected 81 MBA tribal students, and gave them employment after getting them trained through crash courses. Youth power, unless I learnt packaging is important. If done in the right way, the channelized in the right wrapper itself catches a number of eyeballs. So, I went for direction, may exquisite packaging, embellishing the wrapper with tribal art. go astray. Our I learnt packaging is important. If done in the right way, the hamlets are full of unemployed youth. It is necessary to cap their The changes frustration before it brews into an GCC came into existence, setting unhealthy anger. three objectives to help tribals: Market their produce, provide credit facility and take up welfare activities. We have been creating many assets for the past many decades but the data of their success still alludes us. Of course, there is a perceptible improvement in their conditions. But we cannot be complacent about it. There is a lot more to traverse. Most importantly, we need to see if this improvement is sustained. For example, providing them with an asset or a facility doesn’t mean that we have eradicated poverty. It is

The Shaukar system Traditionally, the cultivators get into a pre-crop tie up with the middlemen or shaukars. This results in distress sale. But GCC now gives them 80% advance and buys the crop. Social business GCC has no hardcore commercial objective. We give market support at the risk of loss. For e.g., we bought Gumkari for Rs.108 per kg. But its value dropped in the international market. Yet, we keep up our

commitment, bearing the brunt. Slow progress This can be majorly attributed to the depletion in forest produce which is caused by climatic changes and deforestation. Impact of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (NREGA) is yet another factor adding to this phenomenon. NREGA aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. This is weaning the present generation from their traditional vocations. Challenges Dearth of skilled manpower is a major problem. Many of the staff of our grand old organization, are on the verge of retirement. Today’s society is dynamic, and so we need to look at a new direction. We need futuristic, innovative & new thinking. Economy Tribal economy is subsistencebased economy. The consumptionoriented economy simply lacks professionalism. It is a concern. Employment generation We are providing them opportunities at their doorstep by setting up Super Bazaars and petrol bunks. We can proudly claim that we have brought the tribal youth to earn anything between Rs.5000 to Rs.20,000 as per their qualification and caliber. Women power Women take a very proactive role in procuring the produce. We give them training in value addition centres. For example, we have more than ten derivatives like ice-cream, wine, squash and chips from jackfruit, and we train women in processing them at our centres. red | feb-march 2019 | 63

Vagaries of market One major factor that hits our profit margins is the fluctuating markets. For example, coffee, a valuable product, is guided by the inter-continental dollar exchange rate. Our strength, strategy and skill often fall flat because of the highly judgmental decisions of agencies like Indian Coffee Traders Association which checks the cup quality. They cut rate or reject stocks on flimsy reasons. They pluck moist beans and dry them on threshing floor. This results in beans gaining the soil smell. Moreover, we handle the produce brought by many farmers. They brand the entire stock as unusable even if one of the randomly tested samples emanates smell. It is tough to

stick to the quality parameters in end-to-end procedures as we have no control over the entire process. We are not with them during flowering, harvest season, drying or packaging. We enter only at the marketing stage. Five gates of checks There are five gates through which the produce goes through1)

Farmer Producers’ Organisation

2)

Coffee Board (scientific organization)

3)

ITDA

4)

GCC

5)

Horticulture Department

However, all these five are not properly integrated. There is indiscriminate picking of the produce. You cannot blame the farmers too as it is tough to get field hands. The workers, who complete the work in a stipulated time, hurriedly pluck beans. The government’s efforts to create awareness and sensitise the workers are not very focused. It needs to be done on war footing.

Shoot by Dhana Vijay

Coffee story We give them an opportunity to cultivate coffee beans. They should show the results and, with each year, the profits should go up, so also their investments. That is the indication of growth. But we are not able to assess the growth scientifically. In this case the marketing linkage or price system is missing.

VOLUME OF WORK GCC entered coffee arena only three years ago. Out of 10,000 metric tons produced, in one lakh acres, we purchase 1,000 metric tons. We also market 70,000 acres cashew. We have introduced 20 products including Nala Mamidi, Amla candy, Millet and Ragi biscuits. We also got into cosmetic arena adding Honey Face Cream.

T

he approach to designing living spaces has gone for a paradigm shift. With innovation backing the change, designing living spaces are now more about showcasing your taste and style. Complementing this change is N’Fabustone, Telangana’s first luxury studio by Navakar at Gagan Pahad. M/S Navakar Granites and Marbles started by Mahendra Kummar needs no introduction. With over 23 years of industry experience, Navakar has garnered a market niche catering to huge projects. However, with Telangana growing in leaps and bounds in the infrastructure, it seemed like a perfect timing to launch N’Fabustone that deals in imported granite, marble, rare onyx and limited edition of precious and semi-precious stones. Out of sprawling 50000 sq.ft.,

nearly 10000 sq.ft. is carved out for the studio and the rest is the backyard, holding the inventory. This store caters to architects, interior designers and direct consumers. Under the guidance of Sandeep Mahaveer and Nikkhil Giriya Jain, Directors, N’Fabustone promises the best stones from across the world. The studio is set up with an objective to show how these stones add luxury to the living spaces. It is perfectly designed to highlight the features of these precious stones when used. Considering that all the stones are imported and one of its kinds, the team at N’Fabustone ensures all the visitors are taken for an informative tour in which they are given the details of the different stones. The staff, based on the client's requirement, advise him/her on which stone to choose and which one suits the budget. Driven by the belief that customer satisfaction is the key to the success of business, N’Fabustone even provides door delivery of the material depending on the client’s timeline.

LATEST BUZZ Take on great response to ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi On cloud 9! I have given my heart and soul to it. I wanted to play a fulledged entertainer with action, comedy & romantic scenes & I am grateful I got that opportunity. Take on original Malayalam film. I loved and felt I was watching my own story as I have been through similar situations that the character went through. Usually I don’t prefer remakes but with ABCD I made that exception, and I hope it pays off. What made you say ‘yes’ to it? I could easily relate to the character! He is a spoilt brat with a happy-golucky attitude. His approach to life is chilled out. I wanted to do a fun and frolic film since my previous outing Okka Kshanam was quite intense. Tell us about your character He is born & brought up in the US. His parents feel that his spending habits are out of control. But he doesn’t understand their concerns and feels that he is entitled to that lifestyle. Later on how he reforms, forms the crux of the story. Any scenes you improvised? All 65 scenes! Yes, I improvise quite a lot- while rehearsing my lines with co-stars or somewhere in the take where I feel that adding something might help up the ante.

On debut director Sanjeev Reddy It was a wonderful experience. He handled the subject with élan. I am grateful that he could project me in an unconventional manner.

FORTE On working with Rushkar Dhillon We didn’t interact much as we shot together for only 20 days. But I must admit that she is an out and out professional and brilliant at her craft. Role prep work Whenever I take a role, I take two separate sheets. On one I write my similarities with the character and on the other, dissimilarities. When I did that for ABCD, I found that I lacked the typical accent. I learnt how ABCDs communicate. Upcoming projects I have not signed anything, but I am listening to many stories. My next film, hopefully, will be announced after the release of ABCD. REWIND Did you aspire to be an actor? No. I wanted to be a filmmaker. In fact, I studied filmmaking at New York Film Academy in 2006. Acting just happened. Whenever I would write scenes, I would only visualize myself playing the role. So, I gave it a shot. I consulted my family and they encouraged me to go for it. Your foray into the industry I feel fortunate that I hail from a film

I GIVE MY INPUTS AT THE STORY NARRATION LEVEL BUT 100% SURRENDER TO THE DIRECTOR WHEN IT COMES TO THE PERFORMANCE.

family. I got that much-needed guidance and support. Prakash Raj, a family friend, knew I wanted to be an actor and offered me a role in Gouravam and I instantly said yes. That’s that!

What makes you say yes or no to a script? A big no-no to something that has already been attempted, which is not interesting and where I can immediately guess the next scene! Yes to a story that is either unique or entertaining or both. Your motivation Creative satisfaction i.e. the ability to entertain the audience! If they return home content, its mission accomplished for me! How do you remain positive and focused? I have always been an optimistic person. Undoubtedly, there are times when I am in my blues but I bounce back. I am grateful to my friends for that pep talk and my support staff that always pushes me to give my best. Biggest accomplishment As an actor, nothing as such. As an entertainer, hosting stage shows! It’s a live performance with no takes, that too in front of a whooping crowd of more than 5000 people. Besides, the jokes need to have their impact.

UP AND CLOSE Do you get to be home often? I am at home quite a bit. I used to party a lot, now it’s just home, gym and office. On dealing with trolls Like anybody else- ignore them and focus on my work. The real Allu Sirish Has a split personality. One part is jovial, happy go lucky and easy going; other is deep thinker, philosophical and introvert. Are you picking films randomly? I want to do more commercial films which are entertainment oriented with lots of singing, dancing, action, comedy and of course, a good story. Fitness regimen Diet! Unfortunately, adhering to healthy food is something I am not good at. I follow it for two months and cheat for 15 days. However, I love to work out. No motivation required here.

MY ABILITY TO CORRECT MYSELF, GET BETTER WITH EACH ROLE AND KEEP MOVING AHEAD ARE MY STRENGTHS

Is there a vulnerable side to you? Only my girlfriend can see that. I don’t like to show that side of mine to anyone. Last film you watched Uri. I loved it since I am a die-hard patriot. I am glad that we are doing more patriotism-driven films. Your take on Nepotism and #metoo #metoo- I am glad it happened. Men need to understand that it’s not okay to abuse their position of power. And that the general attitude towards women should be changed. Nepotism- I didn’t choose to be born in this family. It also goes without saying that most children are largely inuenced by their parents. I decided to join my family’s profession and I followed in my grandfather, uncle and brother’s footsteps. red | feb-march 2019 | 36

Industry forecast In the hospitality industry, the evolution of digitalization has immensely reduced the gaps between the audience & service providers. Be it technological advances or the hospitality services, we are leveraging the digital evolution and will continue to do so. In sync with this dimension, the hospitality brands are also focused on increasing their share from all online platforms with an essential presence in brand websites, online travel partners,

Women at work Today, there is an upward surge of women working in the hospitality industry. At our esteemed dual property, we are constantly ensuring that women co-workers are given equal opportunities. Words of wisdom Interpersonal skills are important in the hospitality industry. Teamwork and exibility are required qualities that help people to succeed. One should be honest and put in sincere efforts while accepting the demands of the industry. Considering the dynamic human-driven nature, an individual should embrace every opportunity of learning. It is always important to be optimistic and happy. This will certainly reect in whatever you do.

Education I got MBA degree from Osmania University and went to the topnotch and reputed Mudra School of Branding, Ahmedabad, for my post-graduation. I am a Google Certified and Professional Digital Marketer, and currently pursuing LLB from Osmania University. Turning point The desire to be an entrepreneur remained latent in my mind all through, but I certainly did not set out with that aspiration in my early days of career. However, one

unexpected incident made me take this path. Initially, I handled various positions in MNCs and domestic property development (real estate) companies. I used to multi-task, handling key and crucial portfolios like marketing, sales, branding & digital media. During my last assignment with a property development firm, I proved my mettle by handling a tough and unsaleable project. Putting all my best efforts into it, I sold nearly 60% of the project within a short span of time. Even my promoters were happy with the results. But in a sudden turn of the events and to my utter disbelief, my promoter shifted me to another project without assigning any reason. That made me think. How could one change my role, shooting off one e-mail, without even specifying the reason? I felt that all that hard work I put in 24x7 without even taking a break on Sundays & sacrificing my family time, was ill used. I resigned and started thinking of oating my own venture. Thus began my entrepreneurial journey. It is said many good things spring from bad beginnings. Perhaps, that is what happened with me.

pure digital marketing company. My expertise in the real estate field helped and gave me a good head start. I also gratefully acknowledge my family for rendering unstinting support to me in my business endeavours. Follow up My second company Smartcoat India Pvt Ltd is the first of its kind to offer nano technology products in India. Established in 2017, it is headquartered in Hyderabad. We have already introduced a consumer product -ARMOR8, an all surface anti-germs nano spray to the market. This spray gives 30 days protection. Secondly, we also offer Smartcoat, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and VOC removal nano spray, which is an institutional product with the longevity of one year. It can be safely applied in hospitals, IT spaces, baby care centers and F&B units. I have a few plans afoot to introduce some innovative technologies in

the automobile industry and interesting food supplements in the Indian market. Multitasking I came here after doing my homework thoroughly and absolutely prepared. I walked in with my eyes fully open and with total knowledge of what I was in for. Multi-tasking is a way of life for me. Here again, I must credit it to my early training in the companies I worked. I always handled one too many portfolios. This came handy now when I have to deal with humongous volume of work in businesses. In fact, I am an incurable workaholic and I enjoy these tight schedules & back to back projects. Best advice I listen to everyone but follow only my gut feeling. Advicesgood or bad- come from all quarters but at the end of the day one should be smart enough to realize what is good for his/her life and business. Competition The size of digital market is humongous and each one of us has his/her piece of cake. I need not fret over any rivalry in the field. When it comes to the second venture, nano products are innovative & they are the first of their kind in India. Hence, I don’t foresee any competition in near future. Having said that, I must admit competition is welcome as it keeps the players on their toes.

Ventures My passion for digital marketing made me oat my first software firm in March 2015. Moreover, I wanted my wife Sharadha Thakur, who has an MCA degree, to be involved in my business. I decided to make my venture unique, both in product and service. The name Shaswa is a derivative from my wife’s name. I gave it an appropriate tagline- A New Dimension to Innovation. own inimitable style. She certainly is not one of those doctors who restrict their lives to home and hospital. A committed social activist, Sivaranjani strives to create awareness over healthcare. This uniqueness reflects in her motivational talks and her book- Baby and Child Care. The book is a must-have at the bedside for young parents. A prolific writer, she contributes to educative columns of newspapers. Her passion for preventive paediatrics and parent education earned her wide applause and a strong patient base. I went to JIPMER, bagging 3rd position in the all India entrance examination it conducted. I started working as a fulledged paediatrician in Pondicherry. during this period. I took 2 years break. Despite being a paediatrician, I used to be confused about certain basic baby care related concerns. My motherhood has been a learning experience and it continues to be so. It also gave me an opportunity to pen my book. Hyderabad call Once we moved to Hyderabad, I joined Apollo Hospitals and later, The Birth Place. I have started practising the art of guiding new parents about Baby Care, First Aid and Preventive Paediatrics. I started

holding classes for ‘would be parents’. I could guide 95% of mothers to exclusively breast feed their babies. Magna Pediatrics Now, I am in a comfortable position, practising at my clinic, Magna Pediatrics. I admit sick kids at Rainbow Hospitals. My focus now is on raising First Aid awareness. I take classes on First Aid & Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. My YouTube channel, Dr.Sivaranjani ’s Easy Health, imparts life saving skills & first aid knowledge. Celebrities like Nani, Prakash Raj, Adi, Jagapathi Babu, Ravi and Allari Naresh have endorsed my efforts and asked their followers to subscribe to this channel as first aid is a must for all of us. Communicating with babies who cannot talk Babies do communicate. They cry when in pain. They localise the pain. Talking to parents and observing the child give me 80% of information and only 20% would come from examination. Gratifying task I get a sense of gratification to see a sick child get better. It is very rewarding to see a smile on the parent’s face!

sub-specialities have taken big strides in recent times. Modern day parents They are willing to learn, well informed & take guided care of their kids. Fathers play an active role in parenting. Parent-child relationship With parents taking active part in the child’s overall development, the relationship has become more friendly. Child care: India vs West Our children get a lot of time to be with their grandparents & extended family members. In the west, children become in dependant much earlier, their sleep training starts too early, and practices like bottle feeding and discouraging parents from carrying babies often, are on the rise. Kids would grow up more secure & happier, if they are picked up when they need to be picked up! Our urban-

dwellers too are adopting these traits, due to jobrelated pressures. Working mothers need more support. Let’s imbibe good parenting principles from all cultures, without being fixed on one.

helped many new parents to take care of their babies with great confidence. I educate parents through my media pages and Whatsapp. Is healthcare highly commercialized? Healthcare sector, like any other fields, is designed to make some profit. However, a few institutions may be adopting unethical methods. This is definitely not acceptable. Unfortunately, because of them, the entire sector is getting this ‘too commercial’ tag! Doctors, in general, stick to ethics. Let us not generalise.

Unforgettable case/incident One day, I got a message from a friend “Sivaranjani, my daughter has a father today because of you.” and went on to tell how she gave CPR to her husband, who had a cardiac arrest and saved him. I was so happy that I forced her to attend one of my first aid sessions. This further motivated me to focus on first aid training.
