In Search of Life We’re choosing to ignore Justin Bieber’s new release in our reviews this month. We’ve found a better set for those with a true penchant for good music.

Linkin Park

Living Things

OF A TH LB E U M M ON TH

RATING:

WHAT’S THE STORY? Co-produced by Rick

Rubin and Mike Shinoda, the album is a blast of everything that has come to define this powerful band. Comprising of 12 tracks, Living Things kicks off with Lost in the Echo. This one doesn’t need a few listens to realise that the band is in its best form. No doubt, it will not just appeal to long-time fans, but generate lots of younger listener buzz as well. With not a minute wasted, the album is an assault of thick grooves and wiry guitars.

WORTH A LISTEN?

Their release of Burn it Down sets the mood for the rest of the album which, let’s be honest, is probably their best so far. Clocking in at 37 minutes, it leaves you wanting more. That’s probably the only disappointing factor of their fifth studio release. If you think about it, everything is the same, from the ethereal soundscapes to the looping rhythms. Although most of the tracks are as relentless as predicted, the two ballads, Powerless and Until it Breaks, is a welcome pause. The hypnotic notes which sift through this record are here to last.

VERDICT: Linkin Park remains a band to be reckoned with. TOP TRACKS: Burn it Down and Until it Breaks.

Usher

Looking 4 Myself

If you think the title gives it away, you’re wrong. Usher hasn’t drifted, in the slightest bit, from the standard R&B which he is already popular for. Of course, this is going to go to the top of the charts and will continue to blare on every radio station available. That doesn’t mean the songs are all that great though. Be prepared to hear some of the worst lyrics you’ll hear this year. Join the club if you’re less than impressed by this one.

Cheryl Cole

A Million Lights If nothing else, Bieber has at least created an identity by his third solo album. Ms Pretty Face, however, is yet to find her niche. We aren’t saying she can’t sing; we’re just saying she doesn’t know what to do with it.

Maroon 5

Overexposed According to frontman Adam Levine, this is supposed to be one of their “most diverse and poppiest albums” yet. After having a go at their fourth studio album, we wonder if they’ve overdone it a bit, much like the cover.
