EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome to another fabulous edition of Woman This Month, which is proudly a separate publication once again!

As a young tween, and then teenager, I would eagerly wait for my monthly allowance to buy magazines and novels. Pictures of my favourite musicians and actors would be ripped out and pasted on my walls and I’d read every magazine from cover to cover. Woman This Month, believe it or not, was among these publications seeing as the first edition was published in 2003. Journalism and story-telling soon came naturally to me, but if you’d ever told me “Farah, someday you’ll be writing your first ever editor’s letter for Woman This Month.” I’d love the thought of it but probably would not believe you. Now the moment is here and it’s surreal.

My point here is that with this edition, celebrating International Women’s Day, we get to tell the stories of other incredible women that were once little girls with big dreams and aspirations too. They have persevered, contributed to various sectors and made all the difference. In recognition of these contributions, we are proud to announce the launch of our annual ‘Woman of the Year’ awards which will take place for the first time in December 2024. Be sure to keep up with every edition, womanthismonth.com and our official social media accounts for updates!

On that note, I’m sure we can all agree that the women we grow up to be is inspired largely by our mothers. I know I am! They put their heart and soul into our upbringing, and so it’s only fair on March 21 (mark your calendars) that we show our affection towards them. You can find inspiration for gifts in our guide. Keeping our finger on the forever beating pulse of fashion, we bring you some inspiration for your formal wear with IZEL. We have also put together a fantastic collection of beauty essentials for when you’re in need of some TLC!

This month, in our Parenting section, Ouiam El Hassani guides you on when it’s best to go through your child’s phone. Meanwhile, Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst Fifi Kiwan celebrates Brain Awareness Week by sharing her tips for nurturing our cognitive abilities.

Seeing as this edition is quite special, our team will be hosting a grand celebration at The Art Hotel and Resort that is being sponsored by the official distributor of Porsche in Bahrain, Behbehani Motors. We would sincerely like to thank both entities for their invaluable support.

For 21 years now we have told her story, and now she’s back! We dedicate this special edition to you – our readers. Happy International Women’s Day to you all!

WE MEAN BUSINESS

Across every field and facet, women make a lasting impact, with the professional realm being no exception. This month, we draw inspiration for our formal wear from IZEL’s Spring/Summer 24 collection and share our preferred accessories to elevate your business look.

Toned down formal wear is a thing of the past. Express your style while dressing the part with statement pieces that are elevated with the perfect cut and head-turning tones − power dressing is the way to go in 2024.

The affordable luxury brand IZEL Fashion, known for its elegant and contemporary women’s apparel, has launched its Spring/ Summer ‘24 Suits Collection and one can’t help but draw inspiration from it.

The carefullycurated collection boasts a range of distinct styles, each drawing inspiration from minimalist and asymmetrical shapes and cuts. The colour palette spans lively brights, calming neutrals, and deep, rich tones, reflecting the diverse moods and moments of everyday life.

FASHION | trends Womanthismonth.com 8 March 2024

Breaking the boundaries of conventional fashion, the collection features a diverse range of designs that showcase the artistry of power dressing. One key to making the most of your wardrobe is picking pieces that seamlessly transition from day to night and can be mixed and matched to create unique OOTDs.

With IZEL, we are drawn to its unique cut hemlines and visible seams in the sleeves, each piece exuding versatility and carefree elegance.

Breaking the mould of conventional design, the Asymmetrical Fitted Hemline Suit set introduces a futuristic perspective to everyday styles. The premium blend of fabrics in hot colours like cobalt blue and viva magenta creates a style that is both avant-garde and timeless. The slanted pockets, a never-before-seen feature, complement the geometrical shape, delivering a defining structure while making a bold and unforgettable statement.

A classic ensemble, the Fitted Brown Set exudes effortless poise and unparalleled charm. The classy lapel and body-fitted silhouette create a look that instills confidence and empowerment, transcending trends and celebrating the enduring beauty of a well-crafted suit.

On the other hand, the Pleated Pearl Suit, available in shades of sage green and lilac is meticulously handcrafted from the finest Lachka fabric. This suit features exquisite pleated detailing on the center front, while its asymmetrical hemline and hand-sewn pearl buttons add a touch of opulence, creating a masterpiece that stands the test of time.

Embark on a journey of refined style with the Embroidery Cropped Black Blazer. Hand-embroidered dori work, complementing the black colour and cropped design, defines this timeless piece. Piping on seams adds an edgy touch, making it a versatile and statement-making addition to any wardrobe.

In a league of its own, the Shimmer Suit stands as the epitome of glamour and radiance. Crafted from super lustrous shimmery fabric, this statement piece is perfect for any occasion, with a boxy fit and radiant cuts and silhouettes ensuring that every movement captivates, making it a one-of-a-kind ensemble that leaves an unforgettable impression, especially when the lights hit.

As IZEL Fashion continues to grow to a women-led global brand, the Spring/Summer ‘24 Collection invites women worldwide to join the celebration of empowerment, individuality, and sustainable fashion.

Accessorise it!

This season, we have our eyes on the stunning Roberto Coin collection. This design of this majestic collection borders on regal austerity. The chains that dominate the jewels are solid in the bracelets and rings of the collection and movable in the earrings and necklaces. We could say that Navarra is dedicated to the women who hold a particularly combative soul, but the truth is that these jewels are perfect for every woman who wants to live her life as her own very precious and personal legend. As for footwear, look no further than the versatile Giaborghini Aalto Black Slide that effortlessly complements any outfit.

The Malone Souliers Vesper, on the other hand, is a great alternative for earthy tones and muted nudes.

STRENGTH OF

International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed on March 8 every year across the world. In celebration of the inspirational women who have contributed to every facet of Bahrain’s society, the Woman This Month team is proud to present a special feature highlighting women from various sectors.

Women, by nature, are nurturing individuals. It is this natural instinct that drives women to put their heart and soul into every aspect of their lives, be it professional or personal. In society too, the sheer dedication of women has been demonstrated and observed across several key sectors including (but certainly not limited to!) entrepreneurship, politics, healthcare, education, sports and arts.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The occasion goes well beyond the handing out of casual roses and themed cupcakes, but is rather a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and the need to persevere for further progress. It is, after all, progress not perfection.

The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Inspire Inclusion’. The whole premise of the campaign is to emphasise the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society to achieve gender equality.

Efforts to highlight the contributions of women to society and initiatives to promote further involvement and progress have been consistent

in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In fact, the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) led by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM King Hamad and SCW President, have been far more than commendable in this regard. SCW was established in 2006 to promote women’s rights and their participation in society, and the results of its unwavering support and initiatives have been felt.

Bahraini Women’s Day was launched by HRH Princess Sabeeka in 2008 to highlight the achievements of Bahraini Women. Celebrated on December 1 annually, the day is quite significant as a part of Bahrain’s history as it marks the beginnings of formal education for women in Bahrain with the opening of Bahrain’s first girls’ school in 1928. Furthermore, the SCW spearheaded a youth architectural competition in association with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities which led to the inauguration of the national monument ‘Athar’ on Bahraini Women’s Day in 2022.

Recent figures indicate that the role of women in Bahrain continues to grow at a steady pace. At the

Atlantic Council’s empowerME Initiative, held in July 2023, key panelists highlighted their remarkable achievements. Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United States, HE Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, revealed that Bahraini women account for about 43 percent of the labour force due to SCW’s reforms.

Furthermore, Chairman of the empowerME initiative at the Atlantic Council, Amjad Ahmad, stated that women in Bahrain make up 83 percent of tertiary school enrollments, 54 percent of the public sector workforce, and 45 percent of leadership positions in official state agencies. In the private sector, women comprise 35 percent of the workforce, hold 17 percent of board seats, and occupy 35 percent of managerial roles.

There’s no denying that women have a voice and an essential role to play in the overall development of the world. As we continue to work towards an equal society, may the voice of all women continue to be heard, and may their powerful presence be felt. Let’s Inspire Inclusion!

Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at Woman This Month!

Days out at the stables with family proved to be the start of Ms. Fakhrawi’s passion for horse riding. While most young children might shy away from the majestic animals, she grew a fondness for them.

“I was just three or four years old when I’d visit the stable. My two elder sisters used to ride as a hobby, and I’d be around the horses watching them. That’s really where it all started,” she reminisces. “I was too young to ride, so I’d feed them and first began riding a year or two later.”

Being part of a family that participated in sports and extracurricular activities, she naturally gravitated to an active lifestyle. “My siblings and I tried our hand at countless sports and activities, but the main thing that appealed to me about equestrianism is that you’re dealing with an animal … you’re dealing with a soul,” she says.

“Equestrianism teaches you empathy, compassion, patience, and how to read people’s emotions and those of animals too,” she adds.

Now a seasoned equestrian, she credits the experience as one that has shaped her life. “I’ve achieved so much. I believe that sports, in general, is very important but riding taught me how to live my life. It’s about learning how to overcome obstacles and tackle challenges. It’s about learning to fail and carrying on because it is failure that teaches you about life and yourself,” she says passionately.

Being a member of Bahrain’s Royal Endurance Team since 2000, she has seen the presence of horse riding grow tremendously in the Kingdom.

“The first race that Bahrain hosted was in 1999 and was the beginning of understanding the sport itself. It was something new to the Kingdom. Going from learning about the sport to being the world champions is something that I’m so proud of,” she says.

Horse racing has long been known to be a male-dominated field. However, Bahrain’s first female jockey and renowned equestrian, Manal Fakhrawi, has broken down barriers and inspired a new generation of female riders. She tells the WomanThisMonthteam more.

The Kingdom has supported the infrastructure of equestrianism in Bahrain to allow spectators to enjoy the sport, in addition to facilitating overseas participation of riders too. “There is a lot involved in this sport and it’s evolving with time. There’s so much that you have to constantly keep up with because it’s not only dealing with athletes and horses. Science, medicine, and how to improve both the athletes’ horses and the riders’ stamina are taken into consideration,” she says.

While the journey of being Bahrain’s first female jockey has been exciting, it is a journey that is not without challenges. Ms. Fakhrawi has had to forge a path in what is largely considered a male-dominated sport to this very day.

“The main challenge I had was me being a little girl challenging men and people not believing in what I was capable of. I was always proving that we were equal, especially in equestrianism. It’s one of the sports where men and women compete against each other as we don’t have separate categories,” she says. Hoping to foster a safe, comfortable and encouraging environment for women to take up horse-riding, she opened Fakhrawi Stables. “I see a rise in female equestrians nowadays. My advice to women wanting to venture into the field is to just keep going. There’s always going to be someone telling you to stop through actions or words; just keep going!” she concludes.

PROPELLING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The appointment of Her Excellency Asako Okai as Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bahrain marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship between the two nations as they navigate a rapidly-evolving global landscape. Kristian Harrison spoke with her to discuss her commitment to fostering deeper ties, her key priorities and the opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Your Excellency, congratulations on being appointed as Ambassador of Japan to Bahrain. What has been your diplomatic career path so far? What personal experiences or values shape your approach to diplomacy?

Through my 35-year career in the Japanese Foreign Service and at the United Nations, I gained an extensive track record in development, humanitarian, disaster management and peacebuilding work at both strategic and operational levels of bilateral and multilateral contexts. The last five years,

I was serving as Director of Crisis Bureau at an Assistant Secretary General level in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Transformation, innovation and financing were the key elements of success.

My services abroad as a Japanese diplomat include stints in the UK, Pakistan, Australia, New York as Permanent Mission to the UN, Sri Lanka, and as Consul General of Japan in Vancouver, Canada. Key posts held in Tokyo include Director for African Affairs and senior positions in the International Cooperation Bureau.

My approach to diplomacy is driven by such a belief that the world should help each other and should compete in finding solutions that work for everyone and for the planet, not for your own selfish interests.

What are your priorities and aspirations for your term as Ambassador?

Fortunately, Bahrain and Japan are already enjoying a steadfast relationship, and we are on track to make it even stronger. In the rapidly changing, but also complexly troubled world, Bahrain and Japan can

PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 18 March 2024

enhance partnerships at a strategic level to address global agendas including peace and sustainable development. My aspiration during my term is to take steps that would contribute to making a difference and achieving results.

My top priority is facilitating businesses to widen and deepen collaborations particularly in emerging areas, such as sustainable energy transition, to support Bahrain’s transformation and diversification of economies. We can seek win-win solutions that are economically viable while shaping a new sustainable future. Secondly, I would like to raise the visibility of each other’s strengths and appealing points through promoting culture, food, tourism and more. Thirdly, recognising Bahrain’s strategic positioning in the Arab region, which has great implications to the global peace and security, I would like to explore ways for further collaborations in areas concerning security and stability.

What have been your first impressions of Bahrain and how are you liking it here?

I have found the Bahraini people to be most hospitable, kind and open-minded. Wherever I go, I am grateful for the warm welcome, offers of support and tremendous interests in partnering with Japan. People outside the region have a certain stereotyped perception over women’s role in Arab society. Contrary to that, I was genuinely delighted to see that gender equality is taken at face value in Bahrain. Bahrain’s commitment to freedom of choice, human rights and peaceful coexistence of all religion and ethnicities is commendable. These are aspects of Bahraini people and life that I want to promote in Japan and elsewhere.

What are the current trade figures between the two nations? What steps you plan to take to promote trade and investment?

The total bilateral trade amounted to USD1.5 billion in 2023. The imports from Japan to Bahrain reached USD680 million with a 48 percent increase compared to 2022 due to increasing automobile and related goods. Japanese car makers occupy a major share in Bahrain; namely over 50 percent of the non-luxury market and over 30 percent of the luxury market. Exports from Bahrain to Japan amounted to USD820 million, with a 38 percent decline against 2022, attributed to a drop in Crude Oil, Diesel and Aluminium.

Japanese investments in Bahrain concentrated on electricity generation, water desalination and financing projects, while exploring potential future moves into petrochemicals, manufacturing, sustainable generation of electricity and water, waste-to-energy solutions and environmental protection. And, as Bahrain is becoming a regional hub

for technology start-ups, there are great opportunities for Japan to invest in futureoriented sectors, like gaming, e-commerce, FinTech and AI.

How popular is Japan as a tourist destination in Bahrain?

The recent years have witnessed a remarkable increase in tourism exchange. The number of tourist visas issued by the Japanese Embassy in Manama increased by 60 percent in 2023 compared with 2019. The Japanese government considers the Arab and Muslim region the fastest growing emerging market for inbound tourism. Similarly, we are also witnessing growing interests in outbound tourism towards GCC countries from Japan.

We have seen the love and passion in Bahrain for the Japanese culture and its food. How does the embassy plan to further foster the understanding of Japanese culture in the Kingdom?

We are appreciative of the support by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in organising cultural activities and events including exhibitions of Japanese traditional arts and the annual Japanese Film Festival. Last month, we hosted the traveling exhibition “I love Sushi”. Food will be given a special focus throughout the year as we continue to promote it.

What specific areas do you see for increased collaboration between the two nations?

Firstly, I am thrilled by the ongoing collaboration in archaeological excavation and research. Currently, two Japanese teams are working on examining burial mounds from the ancient Dilmun period in Wadi Al Sail and from the Tylos period in Maqaba. Recently, they organised a regional workshop to employ digital techniques and virtual reality for conservation of cultural heritage. Additionally, Bahrain and Japan are coming together through the signing of an MoU to establish the Bahrain Centre for Arabian Gulf Archaeology and Cultural Heritage to advance and promote research on archaeology and cultural heritage in the Arabian Gulf countries.

Secondly, on aerospace exploration, building on a successful launch of the Bahraini-Emirati satellite Light 1 into space orbit through the platform of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Bahrain’s National Space Science Agency (NSSA) and JAXA have been constantly exploring new cooperation opportunities in space science training, research and development, with a focus on upskilling Bahraini talents in this field.

Thirdly, ongoing bilateral and multilateral defence and security cooperation with Bahrain is playing a crucial role in enhancing

regional security and freedom of navigation. Since 2009, Japan has been a member of CTF 151, the international anti-piracy force under the Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces. Bilateral defence cooperation is also expected to expand, with a revised MoU on Defence Cooperation and Exchange being signed last year.

Finally, we attach importance in fostering the next generation of Bahraini leaders by offering educational and upskilling opportunities such as the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship programme

and the Ship for World Youth programme. In cooperation with Tamkeen, since 2010 more than 100 Bahrainis have received training at Yokogawa Middle East & Africa, and a new cooperation scheme with Japan’s leading application developer E-Growth is underway.

Is there anything you would like to add, Your Excellency?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the people of Bahrain for their great appreciation towards Japanese culture, history and what Japan can offer for Bahrain. I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to further advance our relations to a new level.

We offer training programmes, mentorship and opportunities for startups to showcase their innovations on a global stage. We have signed different MoUs with different organisations, but one of the most important ones that we signed and are working with is the World Business Angel Investment Forum (WBAF).

What led to your involvement with the WBAF?

It stemmed from our desire to further expand the opportunities available to Bahraini startups. By partnering with WBAF, we gained access to a global network of investors and entrepreneurs, which has been invaluable in helping our startups access funding and expertise to grow their businesses. It is

a global platform with more than 1,500 members from more than 180 countries. Therefore, it has a huge outreach and has a mandate to support startups.

What can Bahrain-based businesses do to leverage the benefits offered by the WBAF?

Bahrain-based businesses can leverage the benefits offered by the WBAF by actively participating in training programmes, networking events and investment opportunities facilitated by the forum. By engaging with the global WBAF community, Bahraini businesses can gain exposure, access funding and forge valuable partnerships to fuel their growth.

Could you provide some insights into the upcoming WBAF Congress in Bahrain?

The upcoming Congress promises to be a dynamic event, bringing together policymakers,

investors and entrepreneurs from around the world. With a focus on networking, learning and global fundraising opportunities, the congress presents a unique platform for Bahraini startups to showcase their innovations and connect with potential investors.

They can do this through the official WBAF website or follow updates on the WBAF Instagram account (@wbafbahrain). Registration will be open to all stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, including policymakers, investors and startups.

As a prominent figure in the entrepreneurship space, what advice do you have for young female professionals?

My advice to young female professionals is to pursue their ideas with determination and resilience. There are abundant opportunities available for women in entrepreneurship, and by staying focused on their goals and learning from their experiences, they can achieve success in their endeavours.

Is there anything else you would like to add about the WBAF or your involvement in the entrepreneurship community?

I would like to invite everyone in the entrepreneurship community to participate in the upcoming WBAF Congress in Bahrain. It’s an excellent opportunity to network, learn and collaborate with like-minded individuals from around the world. Additionally, I’m committed to supporting women entrepreneurs and youth in their entrepreneurial journey, and I look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of the Bahraini startup ecosystem.

One of my proudest achievements as a woman has been breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes to pave the way for gender equality and diversity in leadership roles along with fostering the development of female talents, providing mentorship and creating opportunities for growth and advancement.

The two of you work quite closely together. What would you say is your favourite professional quality in the other?

VV: One of my favourite professional qualities in Priya is her exceptional communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate on projects. Her dedication to teamwork and willingness to listen and consider different perspectives greatly enhances our working relationship and contributes to our success.

PS: What I love about Visjna is her simple outlook to a complex situation. Her years of experience in the industry helps her analyse the situation calmly and efficiently comes up with a solution. Her dedication and passion towards her work and team members reflects on the high morale of the team. On several occasions she has taken time out from her busy schedule to mentor a team member be it personal or professional. On a personal level, I love the vibe we have that makes it easier to work together to get the desired result.

You are both women in leading roles working closely together. What’s one misconception that you would like to put to rest when it comes to women in leading positions?

VV: The stereotype that women leaders rely on emotion over logic is outdated, as they are often seen as too emotional or soft to handle tough business decisions or high-pressure situations, which can hinder their progression to higher leadership roles. Yet, my involvement

in guiding transformative retreats has revealed a different perspective.

PS: The perception that successful women leaders must be aggressive and loud. Many successful female leaders embody the strength and clarity of assertiveness, softness, openness and femininity, which resonates with me and I hope to implement that in my work life.

InterContinental Bahrain currently employs 45 women. What are your thoughts on the role of women in the industry?

The strengths of hiring women in hospitality include our strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to foster positive guest and colleague’s experiences through empathy and understanding.

With Bahrain’s hospitality sector becoming increasingly competitive, how does InterContinental keep its offering attractive? What sets the property apart from the rest?

InterContinental Bahrain maintains its competitive edge by continuously innovating, utilising technology for enhanced guest experiences, and focusing on personalised services. The property also emphasises sustainability, community engagement and integrating local culture into its hospitality, resulting in unique and memorable experiences for guests.

What are some of the main activities planned at InterContinental for the Holy Month of Ramadan?

InterContinental Bahrain always connected with local culture and traditions. Every year during Ramadan we highlight the nuances of this beautiful country. This year we have chosen to honour the concept of the Souq through the eyes of an artist. We have tied up with the local well know artist called Abbas Al Mosawi and his paintings of the Souq along with a local brand called ‹Annada’, and will have them on display at our lobby during the entire month as an ode to the souq.

Our Ramadan offers include Iftar and Ghabga every day at the Regency Tent with artists that

includes a harpist for Iftar and a singer for Ghabga. We have also introduced special nights on weekdays which have become quite popular. These include a ladies night on Monday with 50 percent off Iftar and Ghabga, a men’s Ghabga on Tuesdays for half price, and every Sunday hoteliers are welcome for 50 percent off on Iftar and Ghabga.

Visjna, what would you say are some of the plans for the near future at InterContinental?

In the near future, InterContinental Hotel aims to continue developing Bahraini colleagues through tailored training programmes while focusing on enhancing its food and beverage offerings to meet evolving guest preferences. The ultimate goal is to foster guest loyalty by delivering exceptional service and personalised experiences; ensuring guests become advocates for the InterContinental for life.

What’s one thing you are looking forward to the most in the 2024?

VV: As the Director of Sales and Marketing, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to implement innovative strategies that will further elevate our hotel’s market presence and guest satisfaction in 2024.

Any message for our readers on the occasion of International Women’s Day?

VV: Believe in your abilities, advocate for yourself, challenge the status quo and never underestimate the power of your voice in shaping the world around you.

PS: Embrace your superpower and wear your cape with pride. It’s important to be yourself. Don’t try and change to fit an ideal that you think is accepted. In reality, it’s your difference and uniqueness that make you stand out and add value at work.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

In closing, we encourage all women to embrace their unique strengths, challenge the status quo and persist in their pursuit of excellence, knowing that their contributions are invaluable and their potential limitless.

A REMARKABLE WOMAN

The Woman This Month team continues to expand with the appointment of Eskedar Girmay, known to her friends as Esky, as Associate Editor and Brand Ambassador . In this article, we embark on a brief journey of her career, a remarkable life story encompassing roles as diverse as Honorary Consul, film producer, actress, author and philanthropist. With roots in Ethiopia and a thriving presence in Bahrain, Ms. Girmay’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of compassion and perseverance.

Ms. Girmay exudes a profound pride in her heritage, a driving force behind her relentless pursuit of excellence. Reflecting on her roots, she acknowledges Bahrain’s pivotal role in nurturing her aspirations, citing its dynamic environment, diverse opportunities and supportive community as catalysts for her endeavours.

“If Bahrain does not motivate us, I don’t think we would all be here,” she says. “The environment, the people the opportunities … we have a platform to pursue our goals and dreams while there is always something new. We are very lucky.”

“Bahrain is where I met my husband, where I gave birth to my children, and the lifestyle is how they were raised. My kids are looking forward to come back to Bahrain soon, it’s where they feel at home, even more so than France which is where my husband is from,” she adds.

Her appointment as Brand Ambassador is not actually Ms. Girmay’s first experience with Woman This Month. Her association with the magazine dates back to her being featured on the cover in 2004,

PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com 26 March 2024

following her triumph in a July Rose Beauty Contest. Notably, she shares the distinction of being featured twice on the cover, a testament to her enduring impact.

However, it was her diplomatic career where she first made great strides on the international scene. It began when she served as the Honorary Consul of Ethiopia, a role she embraced with dedication and fervour as she worked on improving bilateral relations between the two countries.

Alongside her diplomatic responsibilities, she ventured into the world of cinema, collaborating with prestigious organisations like the United Nations’ International Labour Organisation (ILO) on impactful projects.

A decade ago, her debut in Ethiopian cinema, Tikur Engda (Unexpected Guest) premiered to packed theatres in Bahrain Seef Cinema, striking a chord with fans with its powerful themes and tackling the difficult issue of adoption and what might go wrong when an adopted child seeks out their birth parents.

Alongside this, she has published three books, each bearing testament to her diverse experiences and reflections. Fuelled by her innate penchant for storytelling, these works offer poignant insights into her life’s tapestry, with themes ranging from memoirs to explorations of cross-cultural marriages and fictional narratives.

She explains: “The short stories I wrote preCovid, but the pandemic really emphasised how much I wrote in my diary. The extra time at home allowed me to go through it and solidify it into a further narrative.

“During this process, I started developing new stories and I started to write more and more, which turned into three books. So the first one is similar to a memoir and in fact, one of the stories is dedicated to Bahrain, saying thank you to the Kingdom and its people for making us feel home. I actually wrote it in my language, but that part is

written in both languages, English and Amharic, and the book is available on Amazon

“The second book is called The White Man’s Wife It’s experimental; I took mine and seven other people’s mixed marriages and I talked about the perceptions from both cultures and how we are taken from two different angles. I have the perspective of an Ethiopian man who’s married to a French woman, then vice versa which is me married to a French man. The third one is a collection of pure fiction.”

Beyond her professional pursuits, Ms. Girmay’s philanthropic endeavours have left an indelible mark. For over half her life, she has dedicated herself to charitable causes, extending support to the less fortunate in various capacities and promoting her country Ethiopia. Her altruistic efforts encompass a spectrum of initiatives, from aiding individuals battling illnesses to fostering bilateral relationships for mutual cultural enrichment.

“My house has always open to those who are less fortunate,” Ms. Girmay explains. “My family and I have been involved in taking care of people for more than half my life, whether in translating, hospital visits, supporting and finding funds for those who are going through cancer or other kind of illness.”

Throughout her journey, Ms. Girmay confronted myriad challenges, including instances of unwarranted ethnic profiling and judgment. Yet, armed with resilience and unwavering familial support, she navigated these obstacles with grace, recognising the distinction between government actions and her identity as a proud Ethiopian.

Ms. Girmay’s ability to strike a balance between her professional commitments and personal life is a testament to her resilience and adaptability. While her earlier years were marked by dedication to philanthropy, she subsequently prioritised her role as a mother, cherishing moments with her children amidst her multifaceted responsibilities.

“I had to let go of our helper and literally dedicate myself to my children the last few years to compensate for the time I relied on her,” she explains. “Although I tried to balance it all, it felt as if I was not giving enough time to them. At times, I was more invested in my charity work because I believed there were people who needed me more than my own children. But there were genuinely times where my children were waiting for me to come home and they fell asleep waiting for me. I had that guilty feeling and then realised one day that my kids were suddenly about to go to university and that I had a small time left to be a dedicated full-time mother and had to find more balance.”

In commemorating International Women’s Day, Ms. Girmay emphasises the importance of inclusivity and resilience, advocating for collaborative endeavours and embracing imperfections as stepping stones to success.

“I think we need to remember that we coexist with men. So when we celebrate women, let’s not exclude men. This is one of my main points that I want to highlight! Anything is achievable but you must give yourself a chance to make mistakes. I think that the important thing to note is nobody is perfect without going through some obstacles, so maybe the successful ones are not telling us enough about the bumpy road they went on.

Ms. Girmay’s encounters with dignitaries, including her memorable interaction with His Majesty King Charles III during a visit to Bahrain, underscore her global impact and diplomatic acumen. At the time, she was representing MWPS (Migrant Workers Protection Society) and the King took a keen interest in her background, even at one point expressing his interest in visiting her home town, Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, to which she extended an invitation. “Although he is yet to take me up on it, I hope he reads this article and remembers!” she adds.

Looking ahead, Ms. Girmay’s aspirations revolve around maintaining her diverse portfolio, amplifying voices through her association with Woman This Month and fostering international connections.

DecodingNutrition

In the healthcare industry, there are few roles of more paramount importance than nutrition, which helps to shape individuals’ well-being and vitality. Nagham Noureddine, a clinical dietitian registered in Bahrain with over a decade of experience, opens up to Farah Baig about her journey and the transformative power of nutrition in the pursuit of wellness.

Ms. Noureddine’s career trajectory can be traced back to her roots in Lebanon.

Graduating from the American University of Beirut in 2008, she embarked on a path driven by her mother’s inspirational weight loss journey.

Reflecting on her career, Noureddine shares: “My mum was the one that pushed me into this career ... seeing her happiness made me realise the impact nutrition can have on people’s lives.” Her professional journey took flight in 2009, when she began her practice at a small hospital in Bahrain. However, it was her tenure at the Salmaniya Medical Complex that shaped her expertise, spanning seven years and providing invaluable experience. “Salmaniya was pivotal in my career. It offered me the opportunity to work closely with diverse cases, honing my skills as a dietitian,” Ms. Noureddine recalls.

Navigating through the waves of change, Ms. Noureddine transitioned to Bahrain Specialist Hospital, assuming the role of the head of the department. Her leadership and commitment to patient care were evident as she spearheaded initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery. “It allowed me to further expand my horizons and contribute to shaping the healthcare landscape,” she reflects.

The onset of the pandemic marked a pivotal juncture in her career, prompting a shift towards

community health awareness. Embracing the changing landscape, she transitioned to a smaller medical centre, witnessing a surge in demand for nutrition-related services. “Covid-19 reshaped how people approached healthcare, emphasising the importance of preventive measures and holistic well-being,” she notes.

Central to Ms. Noureddine’s practice is her philosophy of promoting a happier lifestyle through nutrition. Rejecting the notion of restrictive diets, she emphasises sustainability and enjoyment of food. “I don’t believe in fad diets. Instead, I focus on fostering a positive relationship with food and empowering individuals to make healthier choices,” she asserts.

Ms. Noureddine now serves as the Head of the Dietetic Department at Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital. Her specialisation spans various domains, including bariatric care, renal dialysis, paediatric obesity, gastrointestinal issues and diabetes management. Each area presents unique challenges, underscoring the need for personalised nutrition interventions tailored to individual needs.

As Bahrain grapples with prevalent health concerns such as Vitamin D deficiency, obesity and diabetes, Ms. Noureddine advocates for community health awareness and proactive measures. “Addressing these health concerns

requires a multifaceted approach, encompassing education, preventive measures and personalised interventions,” she affirms.

Looking ahead, she remains committed to expanding community outreach and contributing to ongoing research in nutrition.

“I wish I had the time to continue and pursue a higher degree in my education so I’ll be able to do more research,” she expresses as a longterm goal.

As for practical advice to readers looking to improve their health journey, Ms. Noureddine offers three simple tips to begin with.

“Start walking, move more,” she suggests firstly. The second involves replacing all juices with water to address the prevalent issue of added sugars and opt for eating the fruit instead to improve fibre intake. Lastly, she emphasises the importance of incorporating more vegetables into meals, suggesting that small, sustainable changes can lead to significant health improvements.

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH FINTECH

The remarkable dedication of engineer Seema Prem, has led to the creation of FIA Technology Services, a company addressing financial inclusion in India and beyond. In this interview, she sheds light on FIA’s work to bring financial services and security to millions of underprivileged people.

Ms. Prem’s career began with VPN Mobile, during the early days of mobile technology in India. This experience fuelled her passion for implementing technological solutions to real-world challenges. After pursuing further education and work experience in the United States, a pivotal moment during her research on financial systems sparked her entrepreneurial spirit.

Recognising the widespread issue of financial exclusion, particularly in populous countries like India, Pakistan and China, Seema saw an opportunity to make a difference. She submitted her idea to the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition where it received acclaim and finished runner-up, encouraging her to return to India and establish FIA.

FIA’s mission is to empower unbanked and underbanked populations by providing access to financial services through innovative solutions.

“Unbanked are individuals who have never had a bank account, while the underbanked are those who

may have accounts but do not fully utilise banking services,” she explains.

“In collaboration with regulated entities like banks, FIA sets up banking outlets in remote and underserved areas, appointing local entrepreneurs to manage them. In total, we operate around 35,000 banking centres across India. Through these outlets, individuals can open bank accounts and conduct transactions securely using biometric authentication.

FIA, as a FinTech company, leverages technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance its services.

AI-driven algorithms enable predictive risk management and improve productivity, ensuring efficient operations despite rapid growth.

“Building trust among the target demographic was a gradual process, but FIA’s efforts, coupled with support from the Reserve Bank of

India and the government, contributed to the success of what is now India’s largest financial inclusion programme,” she explains.

Ms. Prem emphasised the transformative impact of financial inclusion beyond economic empowerment. Access to banking services enhances nutritional intake, reduces inequalities and empowers women within households. By focusing on women’s inclusion, FIA not only promotes gender equality but also drives financial resilience.

Regarding her sense of social responsibility, Ms. Prem believes her upbringing as an army child instilled a passion to help others and influenced FIA’s commitment to addressing broader social issues. “As a child, I lived in some of the most inaccessible terrains of the country, and often on the borders of countries. There, you get to see a lot of inequality and I think subconsciously that has influenced me significantly,” she believes. “Furthermore, I love travelling and my job also gives me an opportunity to travel across the lengths and breadths of India, which has been phenomenal as well.”

As for future plans, FIA’s initiatives extend to climate resilience, where they are exploring solutions to mitigate the impact of climate disruptions on vulnerable communities. Through strategic partnerships, including collaborations with organisations like the World Bank and IDEO, FIA aims to expand its reach and develop intuitive products tailored to the needs of underserved populations.

As well as the underprivileged, FIA has contributed significantly to the lives of women in India. Originally, only five percent of the company’s banking agents were women, but now this figure stands at 35 percent with a goal of reaching 50 percent in the near future.

It has led to her being recognised by other powerful women. Just recently, Ms. Prem was interviewed by Melinda Gates after FIA was selected to be part of the United Nations General Assembly for its social impact work, something she is very proud of.

“Of course, we don’t do our work for awards, but it acts as a great motivator for the team. Furthermore, if these events are being recognised by other leaders and people around the globe, it will only help to spread awareness of our work and facilitates us to help more people,” she concludes.

ENCORE!

The renowned Manama Singers recently held the debut Choir Fest Bahrain which featured choirs from across the region. Following the spectacular event, we spoke to the mastermind behind the group’s beautiful harmonies –the conductor, Jo Diciolla.

The Manama Singers, known for their captivating performances and dedication to music, have been gracing Bahrain’s arts scene for years. The renowned choir recently organised the Kingdom’s first ever Choir Fest, held at the Cultural Hall, which featured 12 choirs from Bahrain, Kuwait, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The event celebrated diversity in music and backgrounds, with talented singers representing community, school and church choirs harmonising to present music from Western, Indian and Arab cultures.

Jo Diciolla is a musician at heart and a Regional Portfolio Manager by trade. “Being a Christian has a deep connection to choral singing. I started singing at seven years old in a local church choir and have also taken guitar and clarinet lessons and achieved ABRSM Grade 8 in clarinet and a grade A in Music A-Level. Studying music provides a foundation for appreciation, understanding and creation of music, whether solo or with a group,” says Ms. Diciolla. She then led her church choir for a year before

university, and joined the Manama Singers choir in 2016 when she moved to Bahrain.

“Since 2017 I’ve been honoured to lead the fabulous group which is the longest-running and most well-known community choir in Bahrain,” she says.

“Manama Singers is a group of likeminded individuals who want to make music and have fun like an ensemble of lovely people who make friends and build a strong supportive community. The choir is an important support network for each one of us, making our home away from home in Bahrain,” she says.

“The non-auditioned choir caters to singers with varying musical abilities. The choir undergoes comprehensive training, including learning notes at home and polishing them during rehearsals,” she explains. “The singers learn to use their voices to create a tapestry of sound, adding colour and texture to music. I focus on making the experience enjoyable and rewarding.”

The group predominantly sings western music,

including classical, pop, showtunes and jazzy numbers, in English and other European languages. “We are interested in exploring Arabic music and learning about its differences in melodic structure and language. We are networking with Arab musicians, aiming to perform soon.”

Reflecting on the experience organising Choir Fest, she says that it was thrilling, relentless, and inspirational. “The debut Choir Fest Bahrain was magical! All singers, conductors, and our supportive audience, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and shared so much positive feedback. It will certainly not be the last festival of its kind!” she says excitedly.

“Manama Singers is always on the lookout for more singers, especially male voice parts, including tenors and basses. We’re a welcoming non-auditioned choir. So, please reach out if you can sing in tune,” she concludes.

The group meets on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at the Dilmun Club. For more information, follow @manamasingers on Instagram.

THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY

Aesthetic care is an art that is perfected at the hands of experienced specialists. This month, Dermatology Specialist Dr. Noha Al Sayed shares her thoughts on the latest advancements in aesthetic care and the unique approach taken at Lileva Medical Centre.

Botox, laser hair removal, lip enhancements and other procedures have grown in popularity over the years. Several clinics may provide these services across the Kingdom, but few have the glowing track record of Lileva Medical Centre, located in Bahrain Bay, which harnesses the expertise of trained professionals, state-of-the-art technology and advanced products and formulations.

As a leading figure in the field of aesthetic medicine, dermatology and laser procedures, Dr. Noha Al Sayed, puts the satisfaction of her patients first and is well-versed in the field of aesthetic care. In 2007, the Dermatology Specialist received a Bachelor’s degree in medicine with honours from a leading university in Egypt. Pursuing a higher education, she completed her Master’s degree in Dermatology and Venerology in Egypt in 2015 following which she pursued a Diploma at The American Academy of Aesthetics in Dubai, UAE in 2017.

“Aiming to expand on my expertise, I then attained my license to perform laser procedures from The National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences in Egypt in 2018. Then I pursued my Diploma of Laser Applications in Dermatology in Egypt in 2019. Throughout my career, and over the course of 13 years, I have amassed a broad and diverse experience,” says Dr. Al Sayed.

Lileva Medical Centre is highly specialised in

dermatology, dental and laser services apart from other procedures. “We make sure to be unique by following new guides in treatment, and have taken up the latest scientific methods for treatment along with advanced products in our field to achieve the most ideal results for our customers,” she explains.

Men and women can expect the finest of results when using services such as laser hair removal, fractional and vascular laser and dermatology services. “As part of these dermatology services, clients can be treated for dermatological conditions or avail of aesthetic treatments including fillers, Botox, threads, peels, PRP and mesotherapy,” she says.

Aesthetic care procedures provide men and women with the opportunity to slow down the aging process and achieve skin that is rejuvenated and practically glows. “The current top three procedures at Lileva Medical Centre which receive the most clients are Botox, filler and skin booster injections. This is aside from lip enhancement procedures such as lip fillers

which can plump up the client’s lips while smoothing wrinkles and improving its overall tone,” she says.

Most individuals believe that is unnecessary to incorporate Botox and fillers before the age of 40 with some clients worrying about the effects. “This is actually a misconception; the ideal time to consider treatments such as Botox is if you have wrinkles or lose skin elasticity. We only recommend these treatments to clients when they show these signs. Another common misconception is the belief that skin tends to get damaged once you have fillers or Botox which is not true,” she says.

“I would like to urge people not to follow trends and prioritise seeking the very best treatment. When it comes to treating your skin never lean towards or be enticed by offers; rather it is important that you always consult a doctor carefully and take the right steps,” she concludes.

For more information on Lileva Medical Centre, call 17 227-755.

Happy Tails!

A verified review:

They say that love is four paws, a wet nose and a wagging tail. It is this love that drove the visionary female entrepreneurs Zilia Monteiro and Carolina Jimenez Woolrich to establish Bahrain’s first pet barkery – Bubbles & Miche W.L.L. They share their story with Farah Baig.

The home-grown brand, Bubbles & Miche W.L.L, can be defined as a true labour of love. The business started with a chance encounter and a shared passion of two devoted pet parents.

“Our paths crossed in Bahrain, when we were walking our dogs on the beach. Bonding over our love for our pets led us to discover a huge gap in this market for healthy, more natural food choices for them. We quickly realised a shared vision for making a positive impact in the pet food industry through the establishment of Bubbles & Miche WLL.,” says Carolina.

“I have a complaint about the liver and berries treats. My little Daisy is now an addict. This is very serious. I am considering TA (Treats Anonymous). She loves them and it’s so hard to find nice treats here. I just wanted to say keep up the good work.”

The business started as a home-grown brand operating from Carolina’s home kitchen in 2020. “We would make treats for our dogs, Bubbles and Miche, then our friends’ dogs and very soon we realised we were receiving orders! Being restricted during COVID gave us the opportunity to really work on our idea and how we wanted to set this up as a more structured business, which eventually happened in 2021,” says Zilia. Countless days were spent working out the first product line, the recipes, branding, budgets, infrastructural set up and more, to take it from being ‘homemade’ to a ‘legit brand’ that would gain market trust. “We really took the plunge here within a short-span of six months and opened up our first ‘pet barkery’ in Budaiya by January 2022,” she says. “Our dogs inspired us to create some of our best-sellers; Bubbles Crunchy Chicken, Miche’s Crispy Beef, Patitas which are basically chicken feet and Crack-a-lickin’ liver which comes in two flavours. But recently we have seen a greater interest in our veterinaryformulated meals,” adds Carolina.

Bahrain’s market consists of mostly imported pet food with home-grown businesses such as Bubbles & Miche making up the smallest percent – that in itself is the biggest difference.

“By keeping it locally-made we are able to keep it fresh and healthy, cost-effective and really achieve transparency on our ingredients. Having the more ‘natural food approach, customers are able to relate to and understand the ingredients we use with more clarity than a regular bag of dry food that often comes with vague descriptions,” explains Zilia.

Having participated at outdoor markets, we have received feedback from several humans. “But a few times the doggies themselves have launched up on our table to try grab some treats because the smells drive them crazy! One particular instance was when the dog just kept persisting to try and steal our cake and eventually managed to get away with more than half of it!” she laughs.

In response to the positive reaction from pups-tomers, Zilia and Carolina are now developing a line for cats.

“Product development has been an ongoing process and we have needed to do this constantly in the first year to achieve more consistency in the recipe,” says Carolina.

Bubbles & Miche products are available online at bubblesmiche.com and at some local veterinary clinics, pet shops and pet parks. Moving forward, they aim to establish a greater presence in the manufacturing of pet food business with the goal of being a ‘Made in Bahrain’ product exporting to the surrounding GCC, a vision that is not without challenges.

MEET WICKED ROSE

Çağla Akpınar, who was born and raised in the Turkish capital Ankara, first moved to the sunny shores of Bahrain in 2019. The artist popularly known as ‘Wicked Rose’ first developed an inclination towards art when she was just two-years-old – a talent that was then fostered by her mother. “She saw me doodling with crayons on the wall and instead of getting frustrated she let me do everything that I wanted,” she says.

Since her love for art persisted, her mother enrolled her in art courses. “Ultimately, I believed that art is my life and wanted to decided to pursue it professionally by studying fine arts, and got accepted by one of the top-ranked universities in Ankara with a full scholarship in. Today I am the artist that my mother expected me to be,” she says.

Çağla’s is largely inspired by her personal life, and reflects her experiences through multimedium art. Acrylic paint, charcoal, colour pencils, water colour, ink and markers come together to create her vibrant artwork. “My work is semi-surrealistic and semi-realistic. I like that illustrative feeling,” she says.

Bahrain has long been home to inspiring artists from all walks of life. This Month, Edwin D’Souza met with Turkish artist Çağla Akpınar on the sidelines of her solo exhibition. She animates her journey as an artist.

She explains that her move to Bahrain has been transformative and given her the opportunity explore different areas as an artist. “Turkey is a very fast-paced country which is where I learnt to be a quick painter, but Bahrain is a more of a relaxed environment where you get to breathe freely and be yourself. It has allowed me to create and engage with people from different cultures as an art instructor,” she elaborates. Her career recently took an exciting turn with her first solo exhibition, A Glimpse of Wicked Rose’s Art Journey , being the 6th edition of the Downtown Culture Hub held at Downtown Rotana.

The exhibition focuses on her portrait work, with each unique piece sharing the stories she wishes to tell through the usage of colours.

“My art journey is completely psychological. I’ve always been influenced by everything that happens around me; it’s an inner journey that I go on starting from my childhood to now. So anytime I draw myself in a controversial way it made me think about who I am, I felt like

I’m on a stage acting and I express myself as if I were in a theatrical scene,” she explains.

The individual artworks featured at the exhibition are smaller than what one might expect, which Çağla explains is intentional.

“When you go to an exhibition, perhaps especially in the case of the ones in Bahrain, you always see very big paintings. Through my exhibition, people can see that to create something you don’t have to work on a very big canvas. I think artists should be open to variety,” she explains.

People from all walks of life and countries across the world including France, USA, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, India and Pakistan have now visited the exhibition. “The Culture Hub has really brought people together to support the art community,” she states.

“You can be an amazing artist but it’s not about who you are and what you’re doing, it’s about keeping a good relationship with people around you as one way or another you’re influencing people, so you need to care of those around you,” she concludes.

Mountain Madness Mountain Madness

Devoted mother, doting wife and avid adventurer aren’t often seen in the same sentence, but that’s precisely what Preetha Gopinath is. She speaks to Farah Baig about her love for travel, breaking stereotypes and her journey as a mountain climber.

Preetha’s stunning imagery of her adventures across the world have garnered her a following of over 24,000 and features on Lonely Planet and BBC World Service. The avid explorer has visited moe than 26 countries, but what truly sets her apart from the rest is her love for mountaineering.

“I was raised in UAE and make it a point to go on a reunion trip with my childhood friends every two years. In 2018, we decided to visit Bhutan and go on a trek to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery which is where I’d say my mountain madness kicked in,” she says.

At the time, Preetha would take pictures with an iPhone and GoPro and it is her picture of the monastery that was featured by BBC. “It was there that my perspective of mountains changed and my interest for photography grew.”

Following the eye-opening trip, Preetha went on a 10-day expedition to Kashmir’s Great Lakes along with her husband, Deepak, and the guidance of a professional company. While the location was spectacularly beautiful, the experience proved to be one that was … traumatic. “We had to live in outdoor camps with absolutely no luxuries, not even a bathroom or phone network. You are 100 percent out of your comfort zone and it was the first time I got a feel for that sort of environment,” she says.

She recounts a particularly dreadful experience when she thought she’d perish. “We had started trekking at 9am that day and ended up at camp by 8pm, but in between it had rained in what was already a cold environment. To make matters a lot worse, when we were walking on thin ice, it broke and my feet went straight into the icy cold glacial water. I was scared and I thought to myself that I would never do this again,” she says.

“Despite the freezing cold and discomfort, you have to keep going. I felt a lot like Leonardo Di Caprio in the movie The Revenant. The only thing missing was the bear!” she says with contagious laughter.

However, the call of the mountains was far too strong for Preetha. “I think that trauma lasted all of three months and then I thought ‘Let’s do this again’, and started training,” she says, adding that her experience at the Great Lakes opened her eyes to a few of her shortcomings.

“I had to really push my body and it made me realise that I never had the right gear in terms of clothing and hadn’t trained right,” she says. “I realised that for mountain climbing, endurance training, not core or strength training, is the focus. This is of course apart from the psychological aspect and need for mental grit.”

Following intensive training over the course of six months and a trip to Iceland to acclimatise her to extreme cold weather, Preetha attempted her next big feat at 39 years old – climbing up to Everest Base Camp. “Surprisingly, I did not cry as I’d initially expected!” she says.

“I love the mountainous way of life. It’s raw and you get to explore your emotions and who you really are. I also have to mention that I’m really blessed to have a supportive spouse like Deepak who understands and nurtures my need for adventure despite society’s comments and expectations of women.”

Despite her amazing achievements, Preetha isn’t done yet. Next stop – Kilimanjaro!

Keep up with Preetha’s travels by following @travelpraylove16 on Instagram.

TMaking the Right Call

The rise of all things digital can have its perks, but also adds a fresh concern for parents. Woman This Month Parenting Columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, shares her thoughts on when it’s acceptable to go through your kid’s phone.

he problem with phones is that they are so incredibly necessary. Want to limit your kid’s sugar intake? It’s doable, just keep candy out of the house. Want your kids to lead an active lifestyle? Also, doable; just enroll them in a fitness or dance class that they’re interested in. Want to keep them away from mobile phones? Well then, they can’t do their homework, check in with social groups, or text or call you, ever… and the list goes on.

Unlike my first mobile phone, a flip phone that could only send and receive a few texts a month, phones are so advanced now that they come with an ever-changing, unique set of problems that can seem overwhelming for already stretched-thin parents.

You could read all the texts on your teen’s phone and still not know what they’re up to if you didn’t check WhatsApp or their TikTok DMs. And that’s assuming you even know the right apps-of-the-moment to look at. Not to mention, the

act of going through their phone in the first place could be seen as a huge breach of trust by your kids. After all, you wouldn’t demand to read their private diaries, so is a phone any different? What’s a worried parent to do?

Should parents check their child’s phone? The answer is complicated as it depends on the situation.

You need to consider several factors, including age, whether going through their phone is

a part of your family agreement when they received their phone, and if they will be present while you go through it.

With technology comes some amount of risk, and going through a child’s phone can help kids navigate this responsibility safely. It’s important for parents to be clear on their intentions before going through their child’s phone, it’s one thing to be on the lookout for potential risk factors, and quite another to seek out your child’s secrets through confidential texts with friends.

Luckily, there are ways to develop safe boundaries for parents and kids, but it may take some trial and error. Here’s what you can do:

1. Star t with communication and listen to their input . The most respectful way that a parent can go through their child’s phone is by practicing open communication.

2. Children should be made aware when they get their first phone, that their parents may go through their phone from time to time. Parents can emphasise that the reason they are going through their phone is because safety is important to them and that they want to teach their children to be good digital citizens.

LIFESTYLE | parenting Womanthismonth.com 40 March 2024

3. Educate them on the dangers of some online interactions. It’s also important for parents to highlight that going through their child’s phone is not a punishment of any kind, but a way to protect them.

4. Secretly checking their phone is not OK, a better idea is to look at the device together, as it’s an opportunity to build trust and communication. Snooping bypasses both, trust and communication, and often does

more harm to the parent-child relationship than good.

5. You need to understand that age isn’t as impor tant as your child’s developmental functioning and overall maturity. Like many other aspects of childhood, phones require earned trust from adults.

Younger children will likely require more monitoring as they learn the rules and

boundaries, and parents may begin to feel more comfortable with less phone monitoring as kids grow older and consistently show they are trustworthy with their phones. An example of this could look like limiting the number of apps allowed for an elementary-aged child or restricting their phone use to calls and texts only, then doing more frequent phone checks to ensure that they understand the rules and boundaries.

6. Talk to your kids about what they see on their phones. Instead of having a powerbased relationship where the parents control everything, you can create a healthier two-way form of communication with your child. This can help establish a regular dialogue with your child built around trust , openness and safety. However, if a parent suspects that their child or another child is in any kind of risky or dangerous situation then parents must check their kids phone usage, search history and social media to intervene.

No matter what, it’s important to stay open and honest with your kids so they feel trusted and respected. All children should be aware of their parents’ monitoring tactics regardless of age.

Start there, and you’ll set your kids up for success.

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF THE BRAIN

Brain Awareness Week 2024 will be marked across the world from March 11-17. To mark the occasion, Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst, Fifi Kiwan, explores the importance of nurturing our cognitive abilities.

The human brain, often referred to as the most complex organ in the body, is responsible for all our thoughts, emotions and actions. It is a powerhouse of cognitive skills that enable us to learn, solve problems and adapt to new situations.

In celebration of Brain Awareness Week, an annual global campaign focused on promoting brain health and cognitive skills, let us delve into the fascinating world of the brain and explore the importance of nurturing our cognitive abilities.

Understanding Cognitive Skills

Cognitive skills encompass a wide range of mental processes that enable us to acquire knowledge, process information, think critically and engage in meaningful problem-solving. These skills include attention, memory (both working and long term), logic and reasoning and executive functions. They play a pivotal role in shaping our intellectual abilities and overall cognitive development.

The Power of Brain Awareness Week

Brain Awareness Week, held every March, aims to raise public awareness about the importance of brain health and the significance of cognitive skills in our daily lives. The campaign encourages individuals of all ages to engage in activities and initiatives that promote brain fitness and well-being. It serves as a platform to explore the latest scientific advancements in neurosciences and share insights on how to optimise brain health.

Nurturing Cognitive Skills

Research has shown that cognitive skills are not fixed traits but can be developed and enhanced throughout our lives. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits and engaging in brain-stimulating activities, we can boost our cognitive abilities. Regular physical

exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep and stress management are all essential factors in maintaining a healthy brain.

Furthermore, activities such as reading, solving puzzles, playing musical instruments, learning a new language, and engaging in social interactions help to keep our brains sharp and agile. These activities stimulate the formation of new neural connections and promote brain plasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganise and adapt to new situations.

The Impact of Cognitive Skills

Strong cognitive skills are crucial in every aspect of our lives. They enable us to excel academically, perform well in the workplace, and maintain healthy relationships. Moreover, cognitive skills are vital for preventing cognitive decline and age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Educational institutions and workplaces have recognised the importance of cognitive skills in preparing individuals for success. Many schools and companies now incorporate cognitive training programmes into their curricula and training initiatives to enhance learning, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

The Future of Cognitive Skills

As we progress into the future, cognitive skills will continue to play a pivotal role in our lives. Technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and automation will reshape the job market, emphasising the need for individuals with strong cognitive abilities, including critical thinking, creativity and adaptability.

Additionally, ongoing research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology will further our understanding of the brain and its potential. This knowledge will open new avenues for developing innovative strategies to enhance cognitive skills and improve brain health. Brain Awareness Week serves as a reminder of the remarkable capabilities of the human brain and the importance of nurturing our cognitive skills. By adopting a holistic approach to brain health and engaging in activities that stimulate our minds, such as brain training, we can unlock the full potential of our brains and lead fulfilling and successful lives.

Let us celebrate Brain Awareness Week and embark on a journey of continuous learning and cognitive growth!
