The facility boasts two artificial turf fields, each with lights and bleachers, and a field-house with change rooms, washrooms, offices and concessions. The stadium field will be covered in the winter months with an inflatable dome structure to allow programming all year long!

From A royal: The highlight of my career thus far was feeling the strength and encouragement of the community when more than 100 students and faculty drove an hour and a half to support us as we won the silver medal at the Ontario Championships this past February. That’s just one example of why athletics has been such an incredible part of my time at Redeemer. I have experienced an atmosphere here that is different from any other club or organization I have ever played for. Coaches, athletic staff and athletes are all committed to excellence in and out of athletics. We are, after all, as my coach says, “students first and athletes second.” Part of that is seen in the way players are developed to be not just athletes, but strong Christian leaders. Our Manager, Creative Services, and designer of the Viewbook you hold in your hands is a graduate of Redeemer's Art program. Your future awaits...

Our grads say: “My experience at Redeemer taught me to dream big and to follow God’s call on my life. I’ve always loved the arts, but never thought it was possible to be a self-sustaining artist. I thought I would have to compromise within my career and settle for a job that wasn’t my desire, with art as a spare-time hobby. However, through mentorship at Redeemer I learned that I could follow my heart’s desire - to create art and work with people. I am now a full-time wedding and portrait photographer within the Golden Horseshoe (GTA), and I have a studio in downtown Hamilton. I can honestly say that it was only because of my time at Redeemer, with great mentorship from the Art Department, that I was led down this path.” Jimmy Bender, Class of 2008 View Jimmy’s work at www.jimmybender.com

Our grads say: "One of the key ways Redeemer prepared me for my career is by giving me the ability to problem-solve. No matter the discipline, I’ve found that it is really important to be able to see an issue from all sides. Redeemer’s liberal arts education gave me a well-rounded perspective of how to approach a problem. I'll never forget the willingness of my business professors to allow dialogue and discussion, in-class debates that allowed each of us to hear diverse opinions, and ultimately, help us articulate our own perspectives." Seth Waterman, Class of 2010 Seth is now an Account Executive at JWT, a global advertising agency located in downtown Toronto.

Three Business Streams

English

www.redeemer.ca/english Program Options Literature concentration – Honours Major; General Major; Minor Writing concentration – Honours Major, General Major, Minor

Redeemer’s English program will help you develop a love of literature and

an appreciation of the writer’s craft. You will be challenged to consider the role of language and literature in the context of God’s sovereignty. Through analysis and interpretation, you will explore how language and literature both shape and reflect our world and the human condition. Discover how reading and writing can impact your life and the lives of others. Consider how literature and language can be used to honour God and broaden your understanding of His creation. Program highlights: • Find out how powerfully literature speaks in the world of the mass media • Learn to write professionally with our adjunct professor in Journalism, a practicing journalist for 20+ years • Enjoy readings by Canadian poets who visit Redeemer throughout the year. The Canada Council Poetry Reading Series allows for personal encounters with these award-winning writers • Attend local readings and performances, from the Hamilton Poetry Centre to the Eden Mills Festival to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals • Gain valuable experience at Redeemer’s student paper, The Crown and contribute to Redeemer’s creative writing publication, The Minstrel • Work on campus as a tutor at the Writing Centre • Meet and dialogue with authors and literary experts at our guest lectures • Participate in off-campus study programs like the Crandall-Oxford Program in England

18

Our professors say: "Redeemer’s English program is both ambitious and personal. We have what’s called a “coverage model” of course options, which means you can study English literature from its very early days in the thirteenth century right up to the present day as it is expressed in many different countries around the world. If you want to focus on writing, you can take a concentration in journalism, creative writing, playwriting and expository writing. I think one of the best things about English at Redeemer is that students and professors get to know each other, and not only in the classroom but also in meeting up at English Learning Community events visits to Stratford, Canada Council poetry readings, potluck suppers, graduate student panels, and more. Come and join us here as we explore the world of narratives after all, God loves stories: He is writing the biggest story of them all, and we’re all part of it!" Dr. Deborah Bowen, Professor of English

Courses include: Children’s Literature; Literature and the Environment; British Novel; Creative Writing; Journalism; Medieval English Literature; Shakespeare; The Fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis; Canadian Historical Fiction; World Literature in English; and many more. Careers: English students at Redeemer have gone on to work as freelance writers, teachers, professors, poets, editors, journalists, and communications professionals. An English degree can also open doors to many careers in business and the arts.

French Our grads say: My time as a French major at Redeemer was an adventure and a challenge, but most of all it was a huge blessing. No experience has ever stretched me as much as going overseas to study in a different language, culture and environment. I’m now teaching core French in a Christian school. I plan on integrating my experiences in Paris and Quebec in the classroom, but above all, I hope to pass on to my students the contagious enthusiasm about learning a language that I caught at Redeemer. Redeemer's current president and two of our vice-presidents were history majors! Your future awaits...

Our students say: I feel so blessed being able to learn about historical figures and events from a Christian perspective. I delight in the knowledge that God has been working in people and places throughout history as a part of His Master Plan, and it’s so humbling to know that we are a part of a grand story. A solid understanding of the past serves as a great asset to building a healthy present and hopeful future. History enlightens us to present cultural patterns and helps us to become more knowledgeable and discerning. Philosophy is the study

of thought and understanding. It explores how we know things and seeks to answer how we ought to live as individuals and as part of a community. Having a foundation in Philosophy will help you to ask important questions, challenge assumptions, critique different ways of thinking, and examine various modes of interpretation. Studying philosophy at Redeemer will also provide you some of the indispensable tools for cultural analysis and apologetics, and ensure you are well-prepared for graduate school in law, journalism, theology, politics and many other disciplines.

Our professors say: “Philosophy is, quite literally, concerned with everything, including the most fundamental questions about God, reality, ethics, art, politics and many others. Everyone can benefit from philosophy’s emphasis on critical thinking, both in their everyday lives and in their future careers. Philosophy fearlessly asks hard questions and yet is also obedient to God’s exhortation to ‘give reasons for the hope within.’” Dr. Adam Barkman, Assistant Professor, Philosophy

Psychology

www.redeemer.ca/psychology Program Options Clinical Psychology - Honours Major Experimental Psychology – Honours Major

Psychology is the study of why people feel, think and behave

as they do. Underlying these motivations are fundamental assumptions about what it means to be human. All psychological studies at Redeemer are guided by two major assumptions: that we are part of the natural world, influenced by natural, social, and biological factors; and that we also possess self-awareness and are capable of making choices about our feelings, thoughts, and actions. As Christians engaged in the study of psychology, we believe it is important to critically examine the theories and scientific conclusions of this multi-faceted discipline through a Christian lens.

Clinical or Experiential Track: If you pursue an honours major in Psychology, you will choose from either the clinical track or the experimental track. While both tracks share some courses in common, being on the clinical track means that you will take "applied" courses in abnormal psychology, behaviour modification, and counselling, whereas being on the experimental track means that you will take "experimental" courses in cognitive psychology and physiological psychology. As an honours major, you will have the opportunity to not only complete an Honours Thesis, but to present it to your professors and peers at a special, end-of-year dinner. The Honours Thesis is also excellent preparation for graduate school.

Courses include: Developmental Psychology; Abnormal Psychology; Health Psychology; Personality; Forensic Psychology; Theories of Counselling, Psychology of the Will, Psychology of Spirituality and more. Careers: Redeemer's Psychology graduates have found employment as counselors, intake workers, psychometricians, managers of day-care facilities, addiction counselors, support therapists, child and youth workers, personal support workers, and more.

Our professors say:

“In many ways, the Redeemer psychology department is like any other North American psychology department—we offer a fairly traditional menu of courses and interact with the latest thinking within psychology as both a science and a helping profession. Our faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research and in counselling. Our students go on to excel in graduate school and in their careers. But psychology at Redeemer also aspires to be different… to give students the freedom to think critically not only within psychology, but also about psychology. We want our students to excel in the traditional ways—to know a lot about psychology, to be compassionate and wise counsellors, to develop sharp scientific and theoretical minds. But we also want our students to be fully aware of—and, along with faculty, to deeply engage—the deeper worldview issues that so profoundly shape psychology. In short, we want to give students an opportunity to struggle with us as we seek to discover what a faithful Christian presence within psychology would look like.” Russell D. Kosits, Associate Professor of Psychology

Youth Ministry The Youth Ministry Major

allows you to explore your passion for youth in a practical learning environment. While similar to the Religion and Theology major in that you graduate with a B.A. in this discipline, you will be learning from professors who have spent many years in Christian ministry in a variety of settings, especially to youth. You will also grow personally and professionally through two ministry internships.

Our professors say: Youth ministry at Redeemer is holistic: we help you understand how your own character and spiritual gift development is essential for ministry. We show you what Christian leadership looks like. We discuss the many different dimensions of discipleship and equip you to work in them. We help you find internships in ministries so that you have “in the trenches” ministry experience. And we encourage you to serve as a spiritual leader on our own campus too, so that what you learn in the classroom is put into practice in many different ways. I personally find it a profound privilege to teach students who are passionate about preparing for ministry. After all, as Redeemer’s chaplain, I practice “youth” ministry every day, and therefore what I teach and what I do are completely intertwined. Dr. Syd Hielema, Chaplain

You’ll borrow from other fields, such as psychology and political science, in order to explore all the variables that affect human development.

Sociology

At the heart of Sociology is a desire to understand the world and to make it a better place. Rooted in a concern for social issues and social justice, Sociology is at the frontlines of understanding and responding to poverty, crime, issues of gender and sexuality, and other issues of social justice at local, national and global levels of interaction. As Christians in Sociology, at the centre of our calling is to minister to the ‘least of these’ as we are Christ’s servants in the world.

Our students say: I spent my five high school years in Honduras where the culture and everyday living was much different than in Canada. I've experienced Redeemer as a diverse and welcoming community that has stretched me socially, academically and in my relationship with God. Getting involved with many other students that have come from all over the globe was a great help in adjusting to campus life; we could all share similar stories and the experience of coming to Redeemer as a "foreigner".
