edeemer’s campus is located in the Greater Hamilton Area of Ontario, about an hour’s drive from Buffalo, NY, and downtown Toronto. Hamilton is one of Canada’s largest cities, a vibrant community that features diverse neighbourhoods, music and art festivals, shops and sports teams. Full of natural beauty and located on the Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton is known as the waterfall capital of the world (see www.cityofwaterfalls.ca) with miles of hiking trails and hundreds of acres of conservation lands. The Ancaster Meadowlands shopping and entertainment district is within walking distance of the campus, while downtown Hamilton is a short drive (or 20 minutes by bus) from the campus.

Redeemer also plays a role in Hamilton’s dynamic art scene. Many students take part in Hamilton’s monthly Art Crawls, and Professor James Tughan recently opened a gallery downtown to showcase work from Redeemer students and alumni, and from the broader Christian arts community.

why get involved

in the Hamilton art scene?

N a m e : Professor James Tughan St a t e m e n t : Hamilton's James North Art Crawl District is perhaps the fastest growing art market in Canada. The Semaphore Fellowship, led by Heidi Brannan, Chris Cuthill and myself (all Redeemer faculty) have just opened the stunning Flagship Gallery right in the centre of it all. This gallery affords Redeemer fine art grads and students an unprecedented opportunity to get a toe hold in the art marketplace. It gives churches a chance to engage the art world, and it gives citizens an opportunity to engage artists speaking in their work from a Christian perspective.

Your Faith Redeemer is first and foremost a Christian university, so every course you take will allow you to integrate your faith into all aspects of your life.

Degree Programs Redeemer University College offers 14 honours majors, 46 majors and 37 minors leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education degree.

Your University University College: A name for an accredited undergraduate university that grants bachelor’s degrees. Liberal Arts and Science: A degree built on a general core of courses in addition to your specific major concentration. Bachelor’s Degree: A program of study, also known as an undergraduate degree, that normally takes four years of full-time study to complete.

Your courses Core: These foundational courses—which are the heart of Redeemer’s liberal arts and science program—provide a background and context for everything else you will be learning. Within the core, you will have the flexibility to choose courses which develop your gifts, inspire your imagination, and advance your calling. Concentration: In addition to the liberal arts and science core, you will choose a number of courses in your field of interest. Also known as your major and minor, concentration courses explore specific disciplines in depth. Electives: These are courses that fall outside your core and concentration requirements. Electives will allow you to study topics you have a great interest in or are passionate about. They give you the opportunity to round out your studies. Semester: An academic period of 16 weeks. There are 2 full semesters at Redeemer: Fall (September through December) and Winter (January through April). Selected courses are also offered during the Summer. Courses last for the duration of a semester and require 3 hours of class per week. Credit: University courses are measured in credits. At Redeemer, a semester-long course is worth three credits. For most degree programs, you will need to complete 120 credits—or 40 courses—to graduate.

12

www.redeemer.ca

Your Degree Options General Major: 10-12 courses in a specialized area (concentration). Four-Year Major: A more indepth study of a subject area, consisting of 14-18 courses in a specific area/concentration. Honours Major: The most intensive study of a specific subject area/concentration, consisting of 16-20 courses. An honours major is recommended for students considering graduate studies or professional programs. Minor: A concentration of 6-7 courses in a specific area which complements your main area of study. Service Area: Opportunities to augment your program by taking 2-4 courses in a particular area.

Pre-Professional Programs Redeemer’s reputation, intimate class sizes and research opportunities provide a strong foundation as you prepare for your career. These defined areas of study, called preprofessional programs, allow you to complete your undergraduate degree at Redeemer and then continue your education at another university or to complete the requirements of a professional organization. Find out more information from the Academic Calendar or on Redeemer’s website.

Do you have a sense that there are a lot of things wrong with the world? That a lot of people need help? At the heart of Sociology and Social Work is a desire to understand the world and to make it a better place. As Christians, the centre of our calling is to minister to the “least of these” as Christ’s servants in this world. These majors explore and seek to understand patterns of human social life, why people act, think and believe as they do within societies, as well as how to help those who need it. The great thing about studying Sociology and Social Work at Redeemer is you never know where God will take you.

Something special happens when we create theatre at Redeemer -- we establish a community that tells stories of God, His people and His world. You will be challenged to think and respond authentically, whether you are on stage in the spotlight or working behind the scenes. Because you were created to be fully alive, Theatre Arts uses the whole human being—body, mind and spirit—to tell these stories.

esearch plays a significant role at Redeemer. Faculty, often supported and assisted by their students, explore many corners of God’s creation through a variety of projects, papers and creative activity. One of the unique research opportunities Redeemer science students have is to participate in the Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) program. Funded by the federal government through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), it allows eligible faculty to hire students each summer to work alongside them on their original research programs. This year, USRA grants are helping to fund research in environmental toxicology, physics, nuclear magnetic resonance, crystallography and mathematics.

W

e want to see you succeed academically, but more than that, we want you to develop into the person that God has called you to be. Redeemer’s residences are at the centre of that effort, a place where you will be able to grow socially and spiritually, and develop the life skills you need to live independently. And hey, you will have a blast doing it!

As you study, eat, work, pray and play together, your housemates will become some of your closest (and lifelong) friends. There are lots of planned activities, from Parking Lot Dinners to dorm devotions, but in the end, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find and hang out with others who share your interests. Along with your fellow first-years, you will live with a Residence Advisor (RA) – a senior student who will help you with the transition to living on campus. The RA can also help you access the many resources that are available to help you adjust to life on campus.

about dorm life

N a m e : Justin Eisinga, 3rd year Sociology/Social Work major from Grimsby, ON St a t e m e n t : Living on campus at Redeemer -- in a dorm with 5-6 other people -- has been an enriching experience. The older students I lived with in my first year taught me a lot, and living with people who are altogether different from me has challenged me to think outside of my own box, broadening my horizons. However, I am most grateful for the relationships I have developed from my time living on campus. I have gained a circle of friends who understand me and encourage me in all I do.

f you live on campus, you and your dorm mates will be cooking and eating your own meals (don’t worry—no one has ever starved to death in our dorms). From your morning bowl of Cheerios, a PB&J sandwich at lunch to a roast beef dinner with all the fixings, you have choice and flexibility with what and when you eat.

You’ll pick up your food at The Market, Redeemer’s grocery store, which features a wide selection of groceries, including local produce, chef-prepared meals and an ever-expanding selection of products for those with special dietary needs. The dorms also come complete with all the pots, pans and other utensils you will need to prepare your food—and it’s all included in your housing fees. Not a cook? Don’t worry – Food Services offers cooking demonstrations, classes and nutritional sessions, and you’ll learn from your RA and housemates.

What I’ve learned

about cooking

N a m e : Julie Plaisier , 3rd year Social Work major from Dorchester, ON St a t e m e n t : Cooking in residences has taught me that there is such a thing as too much pasta, and that dish towels are indeed flammable. But I have also learned that people are always willing to give a helping hand, no matter the circumstance or cooking catastrophe. Most importantly, I have developed friendships while working in the kitchen. Whether it be while chopping vegetables or cleaning the eight sets of dishes, there is plenty of time to talk, strengthen relationships, and of course pick up a few cooking tips.

But faith also grows in dorm devotions and small groups, on mission trips and service projects, in classroom discussions and late night conversations, and in countless other planned activities or informal instances where the Spirit is moving. At Redeemer, you will find places and opportunities for you to discover what it means to live in a way that honours who you are, who God is, and how to grow in Him.

How I’ve grown spiritually

at redeemer

N a m e : Justin Olthof, 4th year Business major (Management stream) from King City, ON St a t e m e n t : At Redeemer, my faith has evolved from something I merely ‘do’ to something that I live out passionately every day. Through weekly chapel, times of worship, personal and group devotions, and through faculty who explore the Gospel’s message in all disciplines, Redeemer has encouraged me to ask difficult questions. That has not only changed how I live out my faith, but it has caused my personal relationship with the Lord to grow tremendously.

Academic Achievement Scholarships In addition to the Entrance Scholarships, Redeemer awards 10 students with strong grades who have a completed application for admission submitted to Redeemer by March 31. These awards are $2,500 each, renewable up to four years.

scholarships, bursaries and on-campus employment opportunities. For example, if you have a 77% average or higher, you will automatically be awarded an entrance scholarship worth at least $1,300. In addition to these resources, Redeemer students qualify for federal and provincial loans, including OSAP, Stafford Loans and other external funding opportunities.

Leadership Scholarships Applications for Redeemer Leadership Scholarships (20 available at $2,000) and SunLight Foundation Leadership Scholarship (3 available at $2,500) are due by February 15.

How Redeemer Can Help Redeemer offers several programs to help reduce your costs and make a Christian university education accessible: • Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic achievement, athletics, volunteer service or leadership gifts (see next panel) • Bursaries are based on financial need and do not require repayment • On-Campus Employment gives students the chance to earn while you learn • The Redeemer Student Fund Loan is also based on financial need. 20% of these loans are forgiven for each academic year you complete

Where Else Can you Find Help? Redeemer students do qualify for the government student financial aid programs in Canada (including OSAP) and the U.S. As well, some employers, churches, community organizations, and businesses offer scholarships or bursaries to students pursuing post-secondary education.

Athletic Scholarships All awards are assessed by students applying to “Become a Royal.”

Next Steps and Scenarios Redeemer will work alongside you and your family to help you identify all possible resources for financing your education. The best place to start is www.redeemer.ca/financing. There you can also take advantage of online tools to estimate the amount of financial assistance you qualify for. You will also find real examples of how some students financed their education. These are real students (we changed their names), and their scenarios are typical. Learn how: • Rebecca, a student from Ontario, received $21,031 in financial aid • Neil, from New York, obtained more than $17,500 in loans and grants • Micah paid less than $3,900 in out-of-pocket expenses and • Elizabeth, from BC, was able to earn more than $6,000 in scholarships alone We look forward to showing you just how truly affordable a Redeemer education is!
