2015 SUMMER CAMPS 5

Safety Town

Safety Town Questions? Call 734-994-2300

For Young 5’s, Kindergarteners and First Graders. Safety Town is one of Rec & Ed’s most popular summer educational programs. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and entertaining way using a child-sized mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Kids learn how to evaluate safe from unsafe when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. Guest speakers include police officers, firefighters, healthcare workers, bike safety specialists and “Buster the Bus,” AAPS’ own talking school bus. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons about: • Bike and vehicle safety • Stranger safety • Fire safety • Pedestrian safety • Riding a school bus Safety Town is even more fun with Fall 2015 classmates. We try to place children with others attending their school. This gives them a chance to meet other students who they will be seeing in the fall. We make every effort to place students with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. The 2015 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department and many community partners.

• Once enrolled in Safety Town, you will receive a separate email with consent and emergency forms to be completed prior to the start of your Safety Town program and/or camp. • All participants receive a FREE t-shirt. • Scholarships are available for those who qualify financially. • Friday has a new format. The last day includes a short classroom demonstration. Parents enjoy seeing the children share what they learned. Please arrive at about 11:35 AM to participate. Safety Town concludes at 12 Noon for the week.

The Safety Town Summer Program is a great morning experience.

Soapstone & Mixed Media 3D Sculpture Camp Grades 4-8. Two of Rec & Ed's popular artists, Max Sexsmith and David Cowan, come together to offer this exciting camp. Campers transform rough soapstone into a beautiful polished figure by using a variation of files, rasps and chisels. They can choose to create a loon, Inukshuk, whale tail, turtle, pig or owl from precut soapstone. Campers also have time to make small pieces into beads for necklaces, worry stones or whatever they choose. Basic files provided by the instructor. In the 3D Sculpture portion of the camp, students create wire, plaster gauze, and clay figures. In the process, they build “skeletal” armatures, draped with “skins” of plaster, paper, and paint, and crowned with a mask molded from their own face. Scholarship recipients pay $45. Campers should bring sunscreen, lunch and beverage, snack, and a water bottle. Monday-Friday. Camp ID# 2254.801 Dates: 6/22 – 6/26 Early Bird: $295

2015 SUMMER CAMPS 41

Summer Camps 2015 Parent Information Entering/Rising Throughout this catalog the grades listed are for children who are entering the indicated grade this fall (2015/2016). Safety Town Program and Safety Town Camp are for children entering Kindergarten or First Grade this fall, 2015.

Allergies If your child has an allergy action plan, please let us know at least four weeks in advance of your child's participation in the camp. Call 734-994-2298 or 734-994-2300 ext. 53219.

Register Early, Save Money Register by April 19 and pay the Early Bird fee. You will receive significant savings on each week of camp.

Camps follow the district policy governing use of Epi-pens for allergic reactions. It is the parent's responsibility to communicate any special concerns to the Camp Supervisor and to provide any necessary training to camp staff. We require at least four weeks notice for staff to be trained in the use of the Epi-pen.

Multi-Week Discount Enrolling any child in 4 or more weeks of full day summer camps in one transaction saves 10% off the total cost. Eligible camps have an asterisk in the Summer Camp Index (page 41). You will not receive a discount if you enroll the same child in these camps in separate transactions. Safety First A parent or guardian of preschool and elementary aged children must accompany the chìld(ren) into camp every day and sign in the child. At the end of each day, the parent or guardian must come into the building to pick up the child and sign out the child(ren). If you are sending a relative or friend to pick up your child, please provide a written note giving that person permission. Dress Appropriately Make sure your child is dressed for comfort, safety and current weather. Avoid dark colored jeans and t-shirts on a hot day, as well as clothing with strings attached that may get caught on play equipment. Shoes are a challenge, too. Most camps go outside every day so tennis shoes are the best option. Sun Screen We recommend putting sunscreen on your child before your child comes to camp. Campers play outside almost every day. Supplies to Pack These may include food and/or snacks, water bottles and sunscreen. Make sure that any clothes, backpack and other items your child brings are okay to gets wet, soiled or ripped. Label all clothes and supplies with your child's name using a permanent marker. Medications If your child must take a medication during the camp day, the Ann Arbor Public Schools medication policy requires written authorization be on file at the camp for AAPS staff to administer any medication. The authorization must be signed by both a physician and a parent, whether the medication is prescribed or over-the-counter. All medications must be in their original containers and clearly labeled.

42 SUMMER CAMPS 2015

Special Accommodations Rec & Ed makes every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for children with special needs. Staff needs to talk to parents at least four weeks in advance of the camp start day to be able to accomplish this. Please call 734-9942300, ext. 53219 at least four weeks in advance to talk through your child's situation. “Nut Aware” Schools All of our camps are “nut aware”. Please do not send food containing nuts or manufactured at facilities that produce nut products. Staff will follow the Ann Arbor Nut Aware SACC Snack and Nutrition policy. Lunches and Snacks Packed lunches at camp are often kept at room temperature for 4-6 hours. There are several ways to keep a packed lunch safe to eat. Choose foods that may safely be kept at room temperature. Select and handle food carefully to prevent food poisoning. Insulated, soft-sided lunch boxes or bags are best for keeping food cold, but pack at least two ice sources with perishable food any type of lunch bag or box you use. All our camps are “nut aware” (see above). Trained Staff Make the Difference Staff receive ongoing training in the areas of child development, quality environment, programming, behavior management, health and safety. Each camp has at least one staff member present who is CPR and First-aid certified. T-shirts Some of our camps provide a t-shirt for each camper. Please indicate the t-shirt size of your child on the registration form. You will be required to complete this information if you register online.
