SUMMER CAMPS 2016

A2SCHOOLS.ORG/CAMPS

Welcome to Rec & Ed’s 2016 Summer Camps! Focus on FUN and FRIENDS Focus on discovery, friends and fun with Rec & Ed this summer! With over 150 summer camps -- Harry Potter, science, yoga, sports, gardening, drama, chess and writing, to name a few – Rec & Ed has a camp for every child’s interest. We’re proud to partner with local organizations such as the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, the Farm at St. Joe’s, One on One Sports Training, and many others to offer high quality camp experiences in Ann Arbor.

Focus on DISCOVERY To support summer discovery and learning, we’ve carefully selected camp programming that is rich with hands-on learning opportunities. Educational research shows that hands-on activities encourage a lifelong love of learning and motivate students to explore and discover new things. By using hands-on instruction, camp directors foster the 21st century skills that students need to be successful: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity (www.raft.net).

It wouldn’t be a Rec & Ed summer camp without lots of laughter and new friendships. All of our camps provide a safe, healthy, dependable environment with welcoming staff. Creating an inclusive environment where all campers feel comfortable is a top priority. Our summer camps are an extension of the Ann Arbor Public Schools community where children of different ages, cultures and ethnic groups live and learn together.

Just for Parents Discounts - register one child in four or more full day camps in one transaction and save 10% on each week of camp. Look for the Early Bird fee next to the regular fee that will be effective until April 18th at 5pm. Parents’ Page - we’ve put essential information about our summer camps on pages 42-43. Lower Price, More Hours for Extended Care - you spoke, and we listened! Extended care hours have been expanded to 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at a new, lower price of $49 per week.

For 2016, Rec & Ed is thrilled to add Camp Invention to our menu of hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) summer offerings. Created by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized summer program focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention. See pages 6 for Camp Invention dates and sessions. Don’t miss all of the other STEAM offerings on pages 7-11. Of course, discovery isn’t just about academics! Youth use summer camps to try new things -- such as new sports, art, music and drama -- that there may not be time for during the school year. Encourage your child to try something new in a non-competitive camp setting.

College Application Boot Camp NEW! Grades 9-12. Most high school students believe they need to be involved in tons of activities to impress great colleges. The truth in college admissions today is that it’s better to have deep engagement in one or two activities than shallow participation in many. The admissions offices of colleges are asking for quality over quantity. DistinguishMe partners with high school students to distinguish themselves and get into great universities. In the DistinguishMe College Application Boot Camp, college coaches not only help students strategize their college applications, but also lead students through one of the most effective approaches to getting into a great university – an independent passion project. With passion projects, students enjoy working on something they love and gain critical skills and accomplishments that set them apart from other applicants. They are also able to fill their admissions portfolio--a recently announced new admissions process for many universities--with their accomplishments along the way. Mornings, Monday-Friday CAMP ID#

Preschool Art Camps Art Around Ann Arbor Camps Miss Lesley leads two unique weeks of interactive art exploration for children. Campers learn about public works of art in Ann Arbor and the artists who created them. Children create their own responses to the art using clay, paint and other media, listen to stories from the camp library of literature and poetry, and create their own collaborative poetry and dances that connect with the artwork. They also keep a daily journal of art during the week and bring home notes and photographs. WEEK TWO (7/11 - 7/16) Artists in the Natural World Immediately after class every day, families are invited to meet Miss Lesley at a different artwork location in Ann Arbor at 12 noon. We visit the Maya Lin Wave Field, Island or Gallup Park and a Fairy garden as well as a tiny garden in the Michigan League. During the on-site visits, the children perform collaborative dance/poetry responses to the art. On Friday we all meet at the final work of art at 7pm so that families can all share in the performance and celebrate the week of art making together. Please join us! Monday-Friday.

Power of Drawing Preschool Camp Ages 3 ½-5. The Power of Drawing teaches every preschooler the fun of “training the brain to see”. During camp, we draw subjects that interest young ones – like a puppy, a silly alien creature, and a fire truck. Focusing on pattern and symmetry, we create a colorful owl and a pair of mittens. How do we introduce the human face as portraiture as simply as possible?.... by drawing an Eskimo. Color, shape and form are explored in our “party scene” and we go to the zoo in our imagination as we draw and color a giraffe and the scenery behind him. The secret to our art program is that children ALREADY love to draw! We just take their love a little further. Scholarship recipients pay a $10 supply fee. Bring a snack and water bottle. Safety Town

Safety Town Questions? Call 734-994-2300 x0

For Incoming Young 5’s, Kindergarten or First graders. Safety Town is one of Rec & Ed’s most popular summer educational programs. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and engaging way using a child-sized mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Kids learn how to evaluate safe from unsafe when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. Guest speakers include police officers, firefighters, water safety specialists and “Buster the Bus,” AAPS’ own talking school bus. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons about:

• • • • •

The 2016 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department and many community partners.

Bike and vehicle safety Fire and police safety Riding a school bus Stranger and emergency safety Pedestrian safety

Safety Town is even more fun with Fall 2016 classmates. We try to place children with others attending their school. This gives them a chance to meet students from their class before school begins this fall. We also make every effort to place students with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. • Please be sure to fill out the consent and emergency forms prior to the start of your camp week and return them to us. • Will your child benefit from extra support? Let us know so everyone succeeds! There’s a Special Needs Planning form to fill out.

The Safety Town Summer Program is a great morning experience. See Safety Town Summer Camp on page 28 for all day fun Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

• All participants receive a t-shirt and bike helmet. • Scholarships are available for those who qualify financially. • Fridays offer a short classroom demonstration so children can share what they learned. Please arrive at about 11:35 AM to participate. Safety Town concludes at 12 noon for the week.

2016 SUMMER CAMPS

Summer Camps 2016 Parent Information Entering/Rising Throughout this catalog the grades listed are for children who are entering the indicated grade this fall 2016. Safety Town Program and Safety Town Camp are for children entering Young 5’s, Kindergarten or First Grade this fall, 2016.

Register Early, Save Money Register by 5pm on April 18th and save $20 on full day and $10 on half day camps.

Multi-Week Discount Enrolling any child in 4 or more weeks of full day summer camps in one transaction saves 10% off the total cost. Eligible camps have an asterisk in the Index on page 41). You will not receive a discount if you enroll the same child in these camps in separate transactions.

Safety First A parent or guardian of preschool and elementary aged children must accompany the camper into camp every day and sign in the child. At the end of each day, the parent or guardian must come into the building to pick up the child and sign out the camper. If you are sending a relative or friend to pick up your child, please provide a written note giving that person permission.

Dress Appropriately Make sure your child is dressed for comfort, safety and the current and forecasted weather. Avoid dark colored jeans and t-shirts on hot days, as well as clothing with strings attached that may get caught on play equipment. Please consult the welcome letter for your individual camp for footwear requirements; some camps require closed toe shoes and most camps will go outside, weather dependent.

Sun Screen We recommend putting sunscreen on your child before your child comes to camp. Camps will not provide sunscreen for campers to use.

Supplies to Pack These may include food and/or snacks, water bottles, bug spray and sunscreen. Make sure that any clothes, backpack and other items your child brings are okay to get wet, soiled or ripped. Label all clothes and supplies with your child's name using a permanent marker. Rec & Ed will make a reasonable effort to locate lost items; however, Rec & Ed is not responsible for any lost or damaged items.

42

Medications If your child must take a medication during camp, the Ann Arbor Public Schools medication policy requires written authorization to be on file at the camp in order for camp staff to administer all prescribed and over-the-counter medication. The authorization form must be signed by both a physician and a parent/guardian. All medications must be in its original container and clearly labeled. If any of these conditions are not met we will be unable to administer medication.

Allergies If your child has an allergy action plan, please let us know at least four weeks in advance of your child's participation in the camp. Call 734-994-2300 ext. 53228 to let us know. Camps follow the district policy governing use of Epi-pens for allergic reactions. It is the parent's responsibility to communicate any special concerns to the Camp Director and to provide any necessary training to camp staff. We require at least two weeks notice for staff to be trained in the use of theEpi-pen.

Special Accommodations Rec & Ed makes every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for children with special needs. Staff need to talk to parents at least four weeks in advance of the camp start day to be able to accomplish this. Please call 734-994-2300, ext. 53228 at least four weeks in advance to talk through your child's situation.

“Nut Aware” Camps Please respect this rule when you send food with your child. Foods that contain nuts, nut products or are produced in a facility that processes nuts need to stay at home. We have several campers who have severe allergies to nuts.

Lunches and Snacks Packed lunches at camp are often kept at room temperature for 4-6 hours. There are several ways to keep a packed lunch safe to eat. Choose foods that may safely be kept at room temperature. Select and handle food carefully to prevent food poisoning. Insulated, soft-sided lunch boxes or bags are best for keeping food cold, but pack at least two ice sources with with any type of lunch bag or box you use. All our camps are “nut aware”.

Trained Staff Make the Difference Staff receive ongoing training in the areas of child development, quality environment, programming, behavior management, health and safety. Each camp has at least one staff member present when camp is open who is CPR and First-aid certified.

T-shirts Some of our camps provide a t-shirt for each camper. Please indicate the t-shirt size of your child on the registration form. You will be required to complete this information if you register online, however, it is not a guarantee the specific camp will distribute t-shirts.
