Message from the City Council - Winter and Spring 2013 Our year-round mild climate is just one of the many benefits of living in Daly City. While our snowbound friends and relatives across the country are hunkering down for winter, it is business as usual in Daly City. You won’t likely be reaching for a snow shovel anytime soon. It has been more than 50 years since our last real snowstorm (3 inches of snow blanketed our City on Sunday, January 21, 1962, in case you were wondering). So you have no excuses. Make plans to be active in your community in the coming months. Daly City’s Department of Library and Recreation Services is a great one-stop resource for an abundance of free and low-cost programs and activities. When is the last time you visited a library? If you can’t remember, it might be a good time to get acquainted with the friendly staff at your local branch. If you don’t have a library card, don’t worry. Stop at the front desk of any Daly City public library and they will be happy to assist you. Your library card is your key for unlocking a world of information, imagination, and limitless adventure. Best of all, a library card is absolutely free! If you plan to get a library card, bring a photo ID and proof of your current address. Children under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign their application. While books are important, you might want to balance your life with some physical activity. Flip through the pages of this activity guide. Surely you can find a class or event that fits your schedule and lifestyle. Take a dip at
the incredible Giammona Pool, play tennis at Gellert Park, or shoot hoops at the War Memorial Community Center. Daly City offers recreation classes for the tiniest of babies to the most senior of our seniors. One of Daly City’s most enduring events is the Annual Black History Month Celebration. Join us at the Pacelli Event Center on Saturday, February 2, 2013 for an afternoon of cultural entertainment, dance, and food at our 21st Annual Black History Month Celebration. Doors open at 12:00Noon, admission is free, and ample parking is available at Westlake Park. This year Black History Month commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial. If you like to plan ahead, mark your calendar for Thursday, March 14, 2013, as Daly City hosts the 8th Annual National Women’s History Month Awards. The theme of the event is "Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics." The awards ceremony will take place in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 333 90th Street beginning at 5:00pm For more information about resources, programs and activities available through the Library and Recreation Services Department, visit the department’s website: www.dalycity.org/lrs.

This program promotes professional growth, personal development and service to the community. It gives youth ages 13-16 an opportunity to work in the Afterschool Youth Recreation Program. The volunteers work side by side with Recreators at any of our sites; giving them opportunities to give back to their neighborhood community and earn service credits for their school (if applicable). Our goal is to prepare youth in our community to become future recreators in our programs. For more information, please contact David Zetzer at (650) 746-8238.
