AQUATICS Swim Lessons & Class Descriptions

Swim Lessons Register early! Space is limited! Classes fill up fast! Registration is first come, first serve and based upon available class space. During the registration period, registration will be accepted at the Daly City Department of Library and Recreation Services Administrative Office, 111 Lake Merced Boulevard, Daly City, or online at www. dalycity.org/iplay. Please refer to class section for registration period dates. Once the registration period has passed, registration for the remaining spots will be accepted at the pool on the first day of class. Priority Resident Registration! Effective as of April 3, 2014, residents are given priority registration for Aquatic lessons. Non-residents will be able to register the following day for lessons. Swimming Class Descriptions INFANT AND TODDLER CLASSES Sea Turtles 6 months - 5 years. Must be accompanied in water by parent or guardian. Students are introduced to the water environment, basic swim skills and water safety through games, songs and the use of toys. Guardians, parental involvement in the learning process reinforces the parents’ role in the child’s development. Ducklings 3-5 years. A child’s first swim class without parental assistance. Water adjustment, pool safety, underwater exploration, kicking, and stroke readiness are introduced.

YOUTH CLASSES 6-17 years Must be at least 3' 6” tall OR of adequate skill level. LEVEL I-IV: 6-12 YEARS OLD Level I: Guppies Introduction to Water Skills: emphasizing water adjustment, basic breathing, floating, kicking, gliding, jumping, and treading. Level II: Jellyfish Fundamental Aquatics Skills: front/back float with no support and with glide; introduction to elementary backstroke arms, sidestroke, front crawl, back crawl, sculling/finning; treading and jumping. Level III: Sea Horse Stroke Development: front crawl, back crawl; treading, knee dive; introduction to elementary backstroke, butterfly kick, underwater glides, sidestroke and deep water swimming. Level IV: Otters Stroke Improvement: front/back crawl, sidestroke, and butterfly kick with personal flotation device for distance; treading, diving, floating; introduction to breaststroke kick, elementary backstroke kick and open turns.

LEVEL V-VIII: 6-17 YEARS OLD If 13+ years and a beginner, please refer to Teen/Adult Classes. Level V: Sea Lions Stroke Refinement: Front/back/sidestroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke kick for distance; diving, treading; and introduction to breaststroke arms and flip turns.

Level VII: Sharks Fundamentals of Diving: Backstroke, elementary backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly with competitive flip turns; sidestroke and water rescue skills; tread for time with and without arms; 10 minute swim test with turns. Level VIII: Stingray Lifeguard Readiness and Fitness: swim for distances using combination of all strokes; all turns (open and close); dives from starting blocks; tread 10 minutes; water rescue skills; 15 minute swim test with turns. Semi-Private Lessons: Levels Ducklings-VIII: Stingray Struggling or need more assistance in your swim lesson? Semi-private lessons give participants the opportunity to attend eight 30-minute classes where the ratio is one teacher to three students where the instructor and student can focus more on technique and student weaknesses. TEEN/ADULT CLASSES 13+ years Beginner Teen/Adult I (Platypus) and Beginner Teen/Adult II (Barracuda) This class raises the comfort level, establishes natural buoyancy movement, and develops basic strokes. Beginner Teen/Adult III (Orca) Builds upon skills learned in the beginner adult levels and become more comfortable with deeper water.

Level VI: Porpoise Personal Water Safety: Enhanced efficiency, endurance and ability to perform strokes; approach stroke; tread 2 (two) minutes; treading without arms; turns & introduction to competitive diving.
