Message from the City Council - Fall 2012 The Bay Area is spectacular place to live. Few people who live here would dare disagree. We might argue when it comes to Cal and Stanford, the Giants and A’s, or the Raiders and Forty-niners, but we all seem to concur that our little corner of the planet is stunningly fabulous. And when autumn rolls around, nothing compares to the weather and natural beauty that surrounds us. This is the season that brings out the best in Daly City, too. It’s a great time to do something positive for your community! Daly City will celebrate its fourteenth consecutive Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 27 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Touted as the “National Day of Doing Good,” Make a Difference Day is an opportunity for residents to engage in volunteer projects in their neighborhoods and throughout the City. This is the single largest volunteer event of the year in Daly City and throughout the United States. You and your family should consider being a part of this year’s event. One of the highlights of Make a Difference Day is the annual Re-Use Exchange that will take place at the Daly City Community Services Center, 350 90th Street (directly across from City Hall). Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma residents are invited to drop-off new and gently used clothing, furniture, toys, and books Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Donations will be accepted until 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 24. The items donated will be made available at no cost to other Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma residents on Make a Difference Day, Saturday, October 27 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Items NOT accepted for donation include televisions, electronic components, washers and dryers, refrigerators, computers, mattresses, box springs, bed frames, blankets, pillows and sheets, and stuffed animals. For a complete list of items suitable for donation, call (650) 991-8007 or visit www.dalycity.org/reuse. Several volunteers are needed to set-up, sort and display items. Neighborhood clean-ups are a long standing component to Make a Difference Day. Team captains will lead volunteers as they pick up litter and recyclables that have been carelessly discarded on our sidewalks, parks, and public rights-of-way. If you want to lead a clean-up effort in your neighborhood, please send an e-mail to makeadifferenceday@dalycity. org or call (650) 991-8127. Free document shredding returns to City Hall as part of Make of Difference Day 2012. Daly City residents may bring up to three bankers boxes (no more than 100 pounds total) of paper for secure shredding. A mobile shredding station will be positioned in the main parking lot at City Hall, 333 90th Street from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary, but we do need a few volunteers to assist at this location. If you or your group is interested in volunteering for Make a Difference Day, call (650) 991-8127 or visit www.dalycity.org/mdd2012 for registration instructions. Volunteers will report directly to pre-assigned work sites beginning at 9:00 a.m. the morning of the event. A “thank you” barbecue lunch for volunteers is scheduled for noon on the southwest plaza at City Hall. And just as in years past, Make a Difference Day happens rain or shine!
