It can be challenging for hunters to gain access to the impressive wildlife on the Portneuf Range. However, the property offers a unique hunting experience both on-site and along the adjoining BLM and Caribou National Forest, as neighboring ranches restrict public access to public land through their properties. The ranch has a large mule deer population, with several nice bucks harvested each year. Additionally, the area is home to a substantial turkey population as well. There is also an impressive variety of wildlife, including bear, coyote, mountain lion, wolf, moose, quail, chukar, partridge, grouse, and pheasant. Not to be forgotten, the two creeks on the property offer fishing prospects along with several prime fisheries within minutes.

AREA HISTORY

Shoshone and Bannock indigenous tribes inhabited southeastern Idaho for hundreds of years. The Portneuf River region was a vital route for the Oregon and California Trails in the 19th century. With the discovery of gold, the area became a significant stage route. In 1865, a group planned and executed the robbery of a stagecoach traveling through the canyon below the present-day Jackson Creek Ranch. After careful planning, the outlaws ambushed the stagecoach, resulting in a chaotic shootout and the theft of an estimated $86,000 worth of gold. The fate of the stolen gold, worth over $1.6 million today, remains unknown. Leaving the treasure, if still in existence, potentially buried near the site of the robbery. The story encapsulates the lawlessness in the Wild West during the 1860s. In the years that followed, however, the region witnessed a shift towards stability and development.
