INTRODUCTION

Get away from it all and experience Alaska on this raw and remote parcel of land steeped in the heart of some of Alaska’s earliest gold rush-rich history in the Yukon. The first gold in the state was discovered in the Fortymile gold district about ten years before the Klondike gold rush began. Mining has been ongoing for over a century, with large-scale and small-scale operations. The area is still considered a productive gold mining area with several active mines and prospecting operations.

The property is located on the west side of Taylor Highway near the west fork campground trailhead, about 45 minutes from the town of Tok. Located 22 miles off Taylor Highway in an area known to locals as Mitchels Ranch, the property can be accessed by ATVs or snowmobiles. Potential exists to put in an airstrip and build your cabin from the timber on the land. Use it as your own personal hideaway or as a guide property.

The Fortymile gold district is also known for its beautiful wilderness and abundant wildlife. It is home to various big game animals, including massive Alaska-Yukon Moose, caribou, black and grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and some of the largest porcupines you may ever see. Enjoy fishing in the nearby lakes and streams for grayling, sheefish, burbot, and white fish. Forage the land for cranberries, blueberries, and mushrooms or build a wilderness cabin and pan for gold.

Overall, the Fortymile River gold district is an important historical and economic region of Alaska, with a rich legacy of gold mining and unique natural beauty. It is an ideal destination for gold prospectors, sportsmen, and nature enthusiasts alike.

AREA HISTORY

The FortyMile River Gold Mining District in Alaska has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. The first gold discovery in the area was made in 1886 by George Carmack, a prospector who stumbled upon a rich deposit of gold while fishing the Fortymile River. This discovery sparked a gold rush, drawing thousands of prospectors and miners to the area in search of their fortunes.

6 Fortymile River Gold District | Tok, Alaska

The Fortymile River Gold Mining District quickly became one of the most productive gold-mining regions in Alaska, with many small mines and placer operations established along the Fortymile River and its tributaries. The gold mines in the district were primarily placer mines, which involved extracting gold from streambeds and riverbanks using water-based methods such as sluicing and dredging.

The Fortymile River Gold Mining District played a significant role in the development of Alaska’s economy, as the gold mined there helped to finance the construction of roads, telegraph lines, and other infrastructure in the state. However, the gold rush was not without its challenges. Miners faced harsh conditions, including extreme cold and isolation, and competition for resources was fierce.

By the early 1900s, the gold mines in the Fortymile River Gold Mining District were in decline, as the easily accessible gold deposits had been depleted and mining technology had not yet advanced enough to make it economical to extract gold from the remaining deposits. Many miners left the area, and the gold rush came to an end.
