Grundon cleans up From biologically contaminated buildings to chemical spills, site clearance to fly-tipped waste, Grundon’s Industrial Services team has a cleaning solution for everything. And, as Andy Stratton, Grundon’s industrial services sales manager, explains, no two days are ever the same.

We often say we do the jobs no-one else wants to do and that’s because they are generally very challenging, potentially dangerous, almost certainly smelly, and quite often unique. Our skills are very specialist, with expertise built up over many years, and that enables us to provide a comprehensive service to a wide range of customers, including industrial, commercial, research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare facilities, manufacturers, and universities. Put simply, we go in and clean up the mess and we do so in a way that ensures absolute compliance with all regulations, something which is very important and puts our customers’ minds at ease. Not only that, but because we can dispose of the materials - usually through Grundon’s own Hazardous Waste Transfer station in Oxfordshire - we can offer the complete package, something that really sets us apart in the market. 18 SEPTEMBER 2018

Challenges When it comes to decontamination projects, quite often one of the issues will be that the customer doesn’t know what they are dealing with. For example, it might be a now defunct laboratory with faintly-labelled chemicals sat in ageing bottles on the shelf; it could be an old building where asbestos has been removed and there are concerns that asbestos fibres may still remain; or it could be dealing with drugs paraphernalia left in a children’s playground. Our consultancy approach is to send our expert team in to take swabs or samples, which are then sent off to specialist testing laboratories for analysis. Once the materials have been identified, we will write a risk assessment and method statement outlining our decontamination solution, which will include on-site cleaning, transport and disposal.

We’re also very good at determining and identifying the wider risks. Take, for example, the cleaning of interceptor tanks - yes, a company can come in, suck out the waste and leave it until the next time the service is required. We capture the waste, jet out the interceptor tanks, clean them inside and then use CCTV to check for any leaks or internal damage. It might be a more lengthy process but it provides a much safer environmental approach and also improves the overall longevity of the tanks themselves. Planning and time-critical jobs Every job is bespoke and takes a lot of planning, and many have long leadin times, such as when buildings are being demolished or refurbished. Maintenance in the manufacturing sector is usually planned well in advance and we know from experience that the Christmas shutdown period is often the only time a production line WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

may stop - our teams are primed and ready to go in and undertake whatever cleaning may be required over the holiday period, and we’re already taking bookings. Clearly though, not everyone has the luxury of booking ahead. Chemical or acid spills and accidents, biological contamination, fire damage, leaking tanks or drums, and split pipes are all typical situations where we can be asked to help quickly. Fly-tipping and clean-ups is another fast-growing area and we do a great deal of work with councils who ask us to come in, undertake a clean-up operation and ensure an area is safe again for the public to use. We offer an emergency response service with the ability to identify and analyse the contamination, contain it, waste package it, and high pressure jet clean the area using specialised enzymebased environmentally considerate clean up chemicals and materials. Safety first The safety of our employees, our customers and the wider community will always be paramount and we pride ourselves on an unblemished safety record. All our employees are highlycertificated, most recently on the Construction Site Certification Scheme (CSCS). They go through extensive training, including a specialist confined spaces training course where they have to practice escaping a confined space wearing breathing apparatus. Such attention to detail also means they are up to speed with the latest legislation and compliance issues - in turn, this enables them to give advice to our customers about what they should be doing. Innovation We’re always looking at ways to use new technologies to improve the work we do and our mercury clean-up equipment is a good example of that. Our mercury detection monitor can identify when mercury vapour is present in the air and the Environment Mercury vacuum unit, which is fitted with special filters, then WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

enables the mercury metal to be safely captured and removed. Typically, mercury can be found in research facilities, laboratories and healthcare establishments - for those of us that remember mercury thermometers and how often they would break, you’d be surprised how long traces of mercury can linger under floorboards or in cupboards.

Will Brexit encourage our industry to find a costeffective training solution? Simon Gasson is away. Stephen MacDonald, MD of consultancy firm SMA, provides an independent view of a pressing problem. AT SMA we work with cleaning contractors of all shapes and sizes, and if there’s one common challenge they face, it’s how to ensure their front-line staff receive proper skills training above and beyond basic health and safety induction. Yet as Brexit looms, the pool of cleaning labour gradually shrinks, and pay rates rise, training may become one of the most important ways to attract and retain staff. The challenge seems to break down into three areas: • How to deal with the sheer number of staff that need training, exacerbated by high staff turnover. • How to organise training in any shape or form for staff who work across hundreds of locations, often on their own and at ‘unsociable’ times of the day. • How to identify which staff might need refresher training as cleaning techniques are updated, or standards suggest a performance problem needs to be addressed. Various solutions are to be found: • If you’re of sufficient size - and by that I mean turnover of £10 million

• You try and appoint experienced cleaners for routine cleaning, meaning that formal skills training is only necessary for staff who carry out very specialised tasks or use specialist equipment. • You carry out training via toolbox talks, doing your best to ensure that all staff attend the sessions. Do any of the above solutions guarantee that all your front-line staff will receive skills training? Probably not. The problem is, cleaning is the most labour-intensive industry on the planet. Do the maths and you soon find that company-wide skills training is essentially an unaffordable luxury. Is it worth beating ourselves up about it? Some would argue that staff in other industries who work in offices as administrators, marketers, HR people and the like, receive little formal training in their work either. The only trouble with that argument is that where cleaning is concerned, not only is training a vital element of a successful cleaning operation, it also helps to engage staff who might otherwise feel no sense of belonging, lack motivation and ultimately drift away to another

per annum - you appoint a full, or even part time training manager to create a training programme and you carry out the training informally via your area managers, using your own method statements. • If you’re even larger, you become a BICSc Training Centre, with your own managers as accredited assessors. Staff may either attend your physical training centre (that’s if your trading area is fairly compact), or your accredited assessors rove across your locations assessing staff. One small problem though - someone still has to train your staff in the first place.

employer paying more. The solution is surely in the use of technology. Training and engagement apps, like UhUb for example, offer a potential solution, with operatives effectively training themselves by accessing content downloaded to their smartphones. If this can be rolled out cost effectively, the solution may have been found. Otherwise, when Brexit takes hold and the pool of available cleaning staff shrinks to new low levels, companies who can’t offer proper training as a way of motivating and engaging staff may find themselves at an almighty disadvantage.

THE LIVING WAGE

Fair pay: the compelling case for paying a real living wage Neil Nixon reports from the Living Wage Foundation and discovers an organisation working hard to ensure that businesses throughout the UK support the notion that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay – an organisation that celebrates and recognises the leadership of responsible employers who choose to go further and pay a real Living Wage based on the cost of living, not just on the government’s minimum requirements. “I have been able to partner with a forwardthinking FM contractor that is positive about paying the Living Wage, and this joint thinking is key for the successful transition of this initiative. Innovations include a new cleaning delivery model - replacing desk side bins with a central recycling point, using more full time cleaners than part timers, and empowering the front line teams to take greater responsibility which, in turn, has required less managerial supervision.” Cleaning operatives and supervisors have recognised the commitment to paying the Living Wage as a core element in a broader, holistic approach taken to staff well-being that has led to a team that is happy in its work. The payment signifies a greater recognition of a role that is consistently demanding with high expectations. Managing director of ISS FS London, Ed

Aero Backpack ‘prioritises comfort and flexibility’

DIVERSEY has introduced a new addition to its successful Aero range. The Taski Aero Backpack vacuum cleaner can be comfortably carried as a portable electric version, but is also available as a battery version for greater agility. The Taski Aero BP is a unique 3-in-1 solution that can be used as a backpack vacuum, tub vacuum and even a blower. The backpack vacuum is ideal for cleaning in areas that are difficult to access with a conventional vacuum cleaner. The battery model is ideal for building circulation areas, or anywhere the presence of the public makes safety a priority.

“Our customers asked us to develop a backpack vacuum cleaner that offers maximum comfort for their users and still delivers excellent results,” said Diversey’s Lawrence Osborne. “The small motor size and the lightness - as well as the low noise levels - provide the users with great flexibility and comfort. Within a few seconds you can even convert the vacuum backpack into a low profile, super-compact battery tub vac. Both versions can also be transformed into a blower, which clients in hospitality and building owners alike will fully appreciate when dealing with seasonal or inclement weather. It is a great example of Taski delivering more value for its customers.” WWW.TASKI-AERO.COM
