EDITOR’S LETTER C&M

Lessons learned during the pandemic: the Cleaning Show Conference

Showcasing the latest advances in cleaning practices and technologies – and to celebrate the critical role the sector continues to play in managing COVID-19 - the Cleaning Show returns to ExCeL, London from 2-4 November 2021.

staff continues into the new normal. In this presentation, Jamie will explore how the cleaning industry as a multi-faceted sector can work in cohesion to promote the importance of the essential services that it provides to keep people safe.

In addition to exhibits from the industry’s leading brands, as well as other on-floor attractions, the Cleaning Show conference makes an eagerly awaited return. It will provide a platform for attendees to learn and discuss the latest developments, and the critical next steps for an industry on the frontline of public health and safety.

Elsewhere, Sebastian Bachelier, programme manager and project lead for recognised service providers at The Living Wage Foundation, and Charlie Mowat, founder and CEO of The Clean Space, will come together to discuss how cleaning has shifted from an invisible workforce to one of key workers, and why the Real Living Wage matters now more than ever. With a record number of organisations publicly signing up to the Living Wage Foundation and with a growth in demand for frontline workers in cleaning, catering and security, they will provide food for thought on why now is the perfect time to champion the Real Living Wage in employee contracts.

Enhancements in cleaning practices have not been limited to personnel and public perception during the pandemic - technological and process developments have also moved ahead at pace. The Cleaning Show 2021 Conference programme will provide a forum to present and discuss all these developments, and consider the critical next steps for an industry that has placed itself on the frontline of public health and safety delivery. In addition to the carefully curated programme, the Cleaning & Support Services Association (CSSA) will be hosting afternoon presentations and panel discussions within the conference theatre looking at topics including sustainability, smart building technologies and COVID-secure workplaces. Industry experts will come together to discuss a range of varied topics including how autonomous cleaning can support and enhance current cleaning practices, the importance of training and the role of apprenticeships, sustainability and more. Highlights include Jamie Wright, managing director of Incentive QAS Ltd, who will delve into the critical role of the cleaning industry post-pandemic. He’ll address the importance of focusing on public safety as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, and why an emphasis on the importance of frontline

Demonstrating the growing importance of the cleaning and hygiene sectors to public safety, a dedicated session exploring the critical role of the new All-Party Parliamentary Group (AAPG) will also take place. Further details of the Cleaning Show Conference, and the Cleaning Show itself, can be found on Page 26 of this issue – and at www.cleaningshow.co.uk, where free registration is also available. I wish you a clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

SPECIAL REPORT

Having a voice and a champion - the APPG for the cleaning industry Jim Melvin, senior warden elect of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC), shares insights on the WCEC’s involvement in the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the cleaning industry, and his aspirations for the future of the industry. WITH approximately 1.6 million staff in the cleaning industry, we should exert more constructive influence on our future, especially as we generate £54 billion per year for the UK economy. Industry members asked what could be achieved if all the professional associations collaborated, so that the industry could be represented properly? As a result, the idea of APPG for the cleaning and hygiene industry was seeded. Subsequently, after the infrastructure of the APPG was set up, the WCEC was the first cleaning and hygiene body to be approached from a collaboration perspective. Start as we mean to continue In 2020 the WCEC’s Master, Clerk, Paul Thrupp and myself had a meeting with the BCC about key industry topics of interest for the new APPG, such as training, the apprenticeship levy, and the WCEC chartered practitioners register. We, along with other associations such as the CSSA, were looking for new ways to create a ‘cradle to grave’ culture within the industry creating a viable and measurable professional infrastructure with real career development prospects. The WCEC was fully supportive of this approach, along with all industry

SPECIAL REPORT

The responsibility of freedom Dave Wheadon, CEO of the National Carpet Cleaners Association, shares his thoughts on maintaining professionalism and delivering exemplary customer service now that there are significant relaxations in COVID rules. THE pandemic has been a long, hard road for all of us, especially for business. However, as restrictions have lifted, there is increasing positivity as the vaccination programme progresses and we emerge out of our enforced ‘hibernation’. There’s no doubt that we have been waiting patiently to socialise and open up our businesses fully without the prior constraints. However, I believe that for a great many of us, the natural instinct is still to err on the side of caution as we learn to live with COVID-19. I happen to think there’s nothing wrong with being careful. The pandemic has been an unknown quantity for all of us because, not since the great Spanish flu epidemic in the early 20th century, have humans faced a situation like this. In terms of cleaning businesses, they will be required to balance safety, customer service and effectiveness. While the government may have relaxed the rules, it does not mean that we all have to jump in feet first. Hygiene must remain a priority when it comes to managing COVID-19 in our personal and professional lives. The effects of strict cleaning regimes have made such

Sanitising just got sophisticated

in just five minutes, has recently been launched. With the hospitality, beauty and retail industries under pressure to recoup lost profits, the need for fast, seamless sanitisation has never been greater. The Vycel electrostatic sprayer utilises the latest technology to provide a quick, safe and cost effective way of protecting customers and staff from the

infections spread by viruses and bacteria - and ultimately protect businesses with the potential to thrive once again from looming health and financial threats. The unit creates a fine mist that simultaneously disinfects surfaces and cleans the air it passes through. Lightweight, compact and battery powered, the Vycel sprayer delivers 1.6 billion particles of sanitising solution every minute and the builtin high-performance pump can project mist up to 2 metres across a room. “With these industries contributing billions to the economy annually, it’s critical we help support operators that have been hit hard by the pandemic,” said Ken Park, CEO of Vycer. “Protecting clients and staff from viruses has never been more important to protect the safe and efficient operation of businesses. We are proud to have developed the latest in technology, enabling venues to completely sanitise their premises for less than £3 per day using Vycel’s sophisticated technology.” WWW.VYCEL.COM

HYDRO Systems has introduced DMx, a smart, durable and safe warewash dispenser that enhances food safety compliance in commercial kitchens and restaurants. Featuring secure data transmission via Hydro Connect, a cloud-based Internet of Things platform, DMx prevents unauthorised users from accessing the dispenser and provides valuable operational data to help the facility run more efficiently. “At a time when cleanliness is more important than ever, foodservice establishments are looking for ways to enhance consumer confidence and visibility into their own operations,” said John Goetz, global product manager, Hydro Systems. “The DMx ensures food safety compliance with

temperature sensing capabilities inside the wash tank and rinse lines, as well as enhanced real-time reporting through Hydro Connect. This technology is the future in smart dosing and food safety for all types and sizes of kitchens.” With Hydro Connect, DMx reduces the need for site visits and provides increased visibility of data on productivity, chemical usage and costs. It also features maintenance alarms to gently remind staff when it’s time to de-lime the dish machine, change the tank water or change a squeeze tube. This prevents damage to dish machinery, avoids rewashes and reduces the chance of unclean dishes reaching customers. WWW.HYDROSYSTEMSEUROPE.COM

in 30 schools across Yorkshire. One of the purifiers being tested features UV light, the same bug-busting technology that is found in the Sterillo DUO hand dryer and Sterillo UNO air purifier. Steve Levy, managing director of Sterillo, said: “UV light has been proven to kill harmful bacteria and viruses in the air, leaving a more sterile and sanitised airspace for those around. It is fantastic to see the government recognising the benefits of air purification, especially given COVID-19 transmission is predominately airborne. The classroom poses numerous challenges when it comes to hygiene, with children working and playing in close contact. However, we have every confidence that the technology will step up to the challenge and ensure a safe environment for both pupils and teachers. We know that UV light has the potential to be a game-changing solution, not just for schools but other settings too. These trials will showcase what this technology can achieve and provide much-needed reassurance about hygiene, as people return to normality post-lockdown.” WWW.HANDYDRYERS.CO.UK/STERILLO

The new polyester PET monofilament, sourced from Beira in Sri Lanka, is made from bottles, many of which are washed up on the beach, which are separated from their polypropylene caps, then the plastic cut up into small granules. Much of these plastic granules go for extrusion for premium brand trainer production, while the rest is extruded into brush monofilaments. As well as the environmental benefits, Hillbrush claims that the wear properties of the PET monofilament are better than its coco counterpart, not only making it more durable, but retaining its brush sweeping characteristics too.
