Stay ahead of the game with data-driven cleaning The rate at which technology develops seems to know no bounds. The rise of the Internet of Things is changing the way businesses operate in many industries, not least the facility services industry. Data-driven cleaning is making facility services companies ready for the digital age. Equipping them with advanced technology and connectivity to empower cleaning teams and facility managers to work more efficiently and make smarter decisions. 350 companies on more than 125 000 square meters of workspace, and accommodates between 5 000 and 6 000 workers each business day, making it the largest collection of office buildings in the Netherlands. Edo den Hertog, Chief Operating Officer for D&B Facility Group, said: “New technological innovations like Tork EasyCube® enable us to improve our services. By saving time on unnecessary cleaning rounds and dispenser checks, we can devote more of our attention to providing high-quality service”. Data-driven cleaning has led to a reduction of the time it takes to clean washrooms by 27%, with availability of towels and toilet paper increasing to nearly 100%. As a result, the number of complaints at the WTC dropped to an absolute minimum.

INDUSTRY NEWS

The Cleaning Show 2019 adds more sparkle THE organiser of The Cleaning Show 2019, the UK’s largest cleaning, hygiene and waste management exhibition (Excel, London March 19-21), has announced more details of what promises to be a packed event. In recognition of the contribution window cleaning makes to the wider cleaning industry, the 2019 Cleaning Show will – for the first time - feature a special zone dedicated to the sector. The Window Cleaning Village will be for anyone connected to commercial window cleaning, offering them the chance to try out the latest products on offer, attend workshops, and network with equipment providers. It will also be the location for a new twist on the usual window cleaning challenge with the launch of the Window Cleaning World Cup, sponsored by Unger. Adjudicated by the Federation of Window Cleaners (FWC), there will be an international campaign and prize fund to encourage more cleaners from overseas to get involved. Ten top tips to make waste management easy in 2019 As the festivities fade away and the new year stretches ahead, January is the perfect time to review your existing waste management activities and think about setting new goals and targets for 2019. The secret, says Grundon Waste Management’s Steve Hill, is to get back to basics at the beginning

From having an early spring-clean to going on a diet, January is usually full of new year’s resolutions. And while some will succeed, others may fall by the wayside due to a lack of clear focus, not enough resources (or energy) available, or an inability to see results.

18 JANUARY 2019

With these hurdles in mind, Grundon believes in making it as easy as possible for customers to achieve their new goals, namely because we tackle the hard work for you. So take a look at our top ten tips and make 2019 your best waste management year yet.

1. Ask a reputable waste management company to carry out a waste audit for you. This will help identify your different waste streams. 2. Once you know what you are throwing away, consider who is responsible for managing the process and if you have the correct procedures in place - for example, hazardous waste requires specialist disposal to ensure compliance with waste regulations. A good waste management provider will be able to advise you and remember it is their responsibility to be up-to-date with all the necessary legislation - we see it as taking the headache away from our customers. 3. Review your waste bills - look at the volumes of different types of waste, where they are treated and how much it costs. By using this information, you can consider possible alternatives and set realistic targets for the year ahead. WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

SPONSORED FEATURE

4. Ask your provider to identify the best solution for each type of waste. Working with someone who offers a full range of services will be an advantage as you have one point of contact throughout the process and they can guide you through the best options. 5. Speak to your waste management supplier about your goals as this will help them understand what you want to achieve. Think carefully if you want to prioritise zero waste to landfill - in which case using Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities will be an option - or if you want to boost recycling rates and reduce your carbon footprint. Every organisation is different and we don’t believe there should be a ‘one size fits all’ approach - we always take time to get to know our customers and deliver what they want. 6. Embracing innovation is also important. In 2018, we introduced a new Paper Cup Recycling Service and it has been welcomed by many of our customers who like to see new ideas that help them take another step towards meeting their environmental goals. 7. Discussing the different solutions will enable you to develop a meaningful and achievable waste management strategy. We always suggest picking some short term goals and some longer term ones this provides encouragement when results can be seen quite quickly, but also recognises that some things take time. 8. Waste management initiatives work best when they are supported throughout a business. Senior management teams are more likely to get on board when they can see tangible targets and budgets have been set and they know there will be measurable results. Similarly, employee engagement is also essential. We help many of our customers by organising events such as Waste Awareness Days and we can advise on setting up ‘Green Teams’ of waste management champions who WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

spread the recycling word among their colleagues. We also work handin-hand with other partners, such as cleaning companies, because we know this will boost performance. 9. Segregation is very important, so find a supplier who can provide a wide range of bins and containers of all shapes and sizes (both for indoors and outdoors). We always produce posters and diagrams to show what can and can’t be thrown away and these are always much appreciated. Remember, it’s about making it easy for everyone. 10. Having the information to track your trends and see how your waste management systems are changing for the better is very important. Look for a provider who will give you regular statistics to demonstrate savings and show

C&M

you where improvements (such as increased recycling) are being achieved. These successes can give you big ticks in the boardroom and can even help you win awards - like many of our customers. If you’ve enjoyed reading these top tips and would like to find out more about how we can help you in 2019, then you can get in touch using the details below, or why not come and find us at The Cleaning Show on 19-21 March at ExCeL, London. We’d love to talk to you and find out how we can help. For more information about how to develop a waste management strategy or to request a free waste audit for 2019, please contact: info@grundon.com or call 01753 686 777. WWW.GRUNDON.COM

The choice is simple...five factors to consider when selecting a scrubber dryer SELECTING the right scrubber dryer can be a confusing choice with a long list of options, but it doesn’t need to be. To make sure you’re getting the best machine for the job, consider these five factors the next time you’re looking for a compact battery-powered scrubber dryer: • The battery is, of course, a big factor. Interchangeable battery packs offer non-stop cleaning. A quick ‘pit stop’ to clip on a fresh battery is all it takes, resulting in reduced downtime and increased productivity. • Often operated by multiple users, a scrubber

SPECIAL REPORT

Protecting your workforce this winter The winter months bring a new set of seasonal challenges for your workplace and its maintenance staff. Unpredictable weather conditions, increased risk of seasonal cold and flu viruses and potential hazards means management teams need to be extra vigilant to protect staff while they continue to carry out daily cleaning maintenance throughout winter. In this article, Tom Capper, regional sales manager at Robert Scott, offers his clean team insight and product knowledge to guide your workforce through winter.

Tom Capper

COLDER weather affects people in different ways. For janitorial staff, whose jobs can be physically demanding, it’s important to consider the impact of cleaning regimes on their health. Repetitive use of unsuitable products may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders in the long term. Product development has come a long way in recent times and there are now tools that can directly reduce these risks and help improve the overall health and wellbeing of your staff. One of Robert Scott’s latest developments is the Duop Reach tool which features a unique, ergonomic ball and socket joint making cleaning strain-free for users. Its versatile and extendable handle allows for low-level cleaning without having to bend down and reaching at height without the need for step ladders to access difficult areas. Users can also remove the head for targeted cleaning, making it one of the most versatile products suitable for bathrooms, kitchens and other areas with multiple surface heights and material finishes. The Duop tool also benefits from washable microfibre pads. Microfibre is one of the most effective materials for the removal of harmful bacteria - up to 99.9% - without the need for chemicals, and effectively cleans away dirt, dust and microorganisms. This means that at times of year where common cold and flu viruses are likely to be more prominent, using 32 JANUARY 2019

Winter skin care tips for outdoor workers During the winter months, dry and sore skin is an especially common problem for outdoor workers as they are exposed to cold environments for longer periods of time. The seriousness of this issue cannot be ignored, and if the risk is not properly managed, it can affect a worker’s effectiveness in the short term - and cause serious harm in the long term. Paul Jakeway, marketing director at Deb, shares the real threat to a worker’s skin and what actions employers need to take to protect outdoor workers this winter. important to provide the appropriate protection

Implementing the ‘3-Moments of Skin Care’ The ‘3-Moments of Skin Care’, the universal standard for skin care best practice, heralds a breakthrough in the fight against OSDs. These three moments identify when skin care action is required, more importantly highlighting when skin protection or restorative creams should be applied by workers - before starting work, after washing hands (during work) and after finishing work. The use of appropriate pre-work and afterwork hand creams can have a significant impact on the prevention of OSDs. At each stage, it is 34 JANUARY 2019

CLEANING at height, in particular gutter cleaning and roof inspections, is still thought to be a challenging task

An innovation in gutter cleaning

for some FM companies, especially where there are hundreds of sites to be inspected and cleaned. Since 2003, the SkyVac, gutter and high level cleaning system has been at the forefront of the high level cleaning industry. Reaching up to 40ft from the ground, the system only requires one person for operation and an

average site can be inspected and cleaned in half a day. Based on the SkyVac Industrial system, Spinaclean has now designed a new, advanced, portable gutter cleaning system - the SkyVac Interceptor. Spinaclean describes it as the ‘world’s first fully independent gutter cleaning system with its own on-board power plant’. Generating impressive suction power, this mobile system is powered by a robust Honda engine. Built in features include a tilting drum for easy emptying and a blow function feature for self-unblocking and removing pine needles and leaves. Specifications include rapid air flow of 8000 litres per minute, a 90 litre drum and a 155 inch water lift, ensuring precision cleaning up to 40ft from the safety of the ground, eliminating the need for scaffolding and cherry pickers. WWW.SPINACLEAN.COM ROBERT SCOTT has developed the Barista Cloth, a new heat-resistant, antibacterial cloth. According to the British Coffee Association, the UK’s coffee consumption grew to an estimated 95 million cups a day in 2018 and so for those who work behind the machine, things can get rather steamy. Robert Scott’s cloth has been designed with the needs of baristas in mind and has been externally certified against BS EN ISO 12127-1 2015 and approved to be heat resistant up to 250°C. The Barista Cloth can be used on the steam wands and other coffee machine components that become extremely hot, offering complete heat protection to the user. Made from 100% biodegradable viscose, the cloth is suitable for use on any surface, with an antibacterial treatment that inhibits the growth of bacteria and eliminates odours on the cloth. It is also food contact safe and

Litter bin boasts integral fire extinguisher

LEAFIELD Environmental has launched an automatic fire suppression system for its Square Heritage litter-bins. Should a fire breakout inside a bin, the device activates by a sacrificial bulb that bursts at a given temperature, releasing a powder discharge from an extinguisher. Extensive tests have shown the device to be extremely effective in putting out fires before they take hold, with bins remaining fully serviceable after the fire has been extinguished. The optional extinguisher unit is fitted neatly within the twin skin of the bin hood. It is barely visible from the outside and does not interfere with the passage

of litter. Discharged extinguishers can be removed and replaced easily, thanks to quick-release mechanism of the holder. WWW.LEAFIELDRECYCLE.COM

well as carrying a substantial cost, is often not a viable option. The built in condenser constitutes a major part of the machine’s energy efficiency features, accounting for significant electricity savings of up to 30%. The AD55 has many other energy and water saving features including double skinned insulation, which prevents heat escaping, and a shallow wash tank that uses the minimum quantities of water and energy necessary to ensure a perfect wash. In fact, the machine draws just 2.9 litres of rinse water per cycle which is then used in the subsequent wash. The AD55 has five standard wash programmes and a further customisable one. A superior performance across all programmes is assured by two powerful, stainless steel, combined wash and rinse arms with strategically angled directional jets which are designed to stream water to every part of the wash tank. WWW.NELSONWASH.CO.UK SWIFTCLEAN Building Services is depicting its range of specialist services with a series of five new animated cartoons which highlight some of the specific challenges faced by building, estates and facilities managers in their daily task of keeping properties compliant. “Keeping current with all the regulations and best practice for property management is a huge and diverse challenge for every property manager,” said Swiftclean’s managing director, Gary Nicholls. “Our short videos are designed to highlight a few of those individual challenges and explain how easily we, as specialists, can help the building manager to overcome them and
