Banff Centre is creating space for Indigenous voices. Reneltta Arluk has been a storyteller her whole life. Finding theatre at 19 broadened the way she tells those stories. Now, as Director of Indigenous Arts at Banff Centre, she’s creating space for Indigenous artists to collaborate and define their voices.

The essential session to kick off and get up to speed with the PuSh Assembly: Industry Series, and your first point of contact with international delegations and visiting artists gathered for the final week of the Festival. The Morning Briefing will begin with a territorial welcome by Rebecca Duncan (Squamish/Musqueam), knowledge keeper and cultural ambassador. Followed by remarks given by Industry Series hosts. 8

DAWN JANI BIRLEY KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, BUT SIGN LANGUAGE IS MY SUPERPOWER…

For a long while, society has been promoting the idea of embracing diversity, being inclusive and respecting different needs; however, as a Deaf person whose native tongue is sign language, I face many different challenges and obstacles—both in my everyday life and as an an actor. One of my biggest ordeals was studying physical theatre in London; it was a Goliath I had to overcome on a daily basis, and I survived by using intersectionality as a tool. This experience became my motivation for using art as a platform to push for positive change. Prince Hamlet is one of several works I’ve undertaken with the aim of bringing together the worlds of signers and non-signers. —DAWN JANI BIRLEY

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Toronto Theatre Critics Award Winner for Best Actress in a Play 2017 for her role as Horatio in Prince Hamlet with Why Not Theatre and Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf Person of the Year 2017, Dawn Jani Birley is a versatile actor spanning more than ten years of professional experience in theatre and film. Her passion is to show that Deaf and hearing folks can work together on the frontlines of bringing positive change to today’s world.

THE SECOND WOMAN

ANNA BRECKON & NAT RANDALL (AUSTRALIA) In an epic endurance performance, a performer repeats a single scene 100 times over a 24 hour period. Starring opposite her are 100 different men drawn from the local community. The scene is captured on multiple cameras and projected live alongside the staged performance. Through the repetition of this intimate encounter, The Second Woman explores the complex interplay between identity, performance, gender, emotion, cinema and reality.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Our collaborative practice is at the intersection of live performance, video and film. Nat’s extensive experience with durational models of performance practice pairs with Anna’s history of filmmaking and film theory to produce work that is uniquely live and cinematic.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Julia Croft is a New Zealand based live artist and theatre maker who creates contemporary performance that formally sits between theatre, dance and performance art. Her work explores feminist themes of representational politics, violence and the body. Her works have toured extensively through NZ, Australia, the UK and recently to Singapore and Canada.

LOST TOGETHER

UNSPUN THEATRE (CANADA) Lost Together invites audiences to share a story about loss. After each conversation, we recreate that lost thing for our participant. What happens when we make something new from loss? The objects we create become part of an ever-evolving exhibition, reminding us that loss doesn’t have to be a solitary reckoning.

POLY QUEER LOVE BALLAD

ANAIS WEST AND SARA VICKRUCK (CANADA) Poly Queer Love Ballad is a bold, intimate musical, merging slam poetry with pop-folk tunes. Nina, a polyamorous bisexual poet, meets Gabbie, a monogamous lesbian songwriter. With two microphones, a loop pedal, and array of instruments, they struggle to reconcile their fierce mutual attraction with their opposing perspectives on love.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Anais West and Sara Vickruck are queer theatre artists based out of Vancouver, Canada (Unceded Coast Salish Territories). West’s a performer, playwright and the frank theatre’s Operations Manager/Associate Producer. Vickruck’s an actor, composer, musician and sound designer who has worked with the Arts Club, and the Firehall Arts Centre.

TEIYA KASAHARA AND AMPLIFIED OPERA & A THEATRE GARGANTUA SIDESTREAM CYCLE (CANADA) In Teiya Kasahara’s opera-inspired work, Mozart’s infamous “fallen woman” the Queen of the Night rebels against the constraints of traditional opera roles and explodes audience expectations. The Queen in Me combines original text and unexpected operatic excerpts into a highly theatrical piece that is powerful, funny and uplifting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Nikkei-Canadian soprano Teiya Kasahara is a queer, gender non-conforming opera singer, actor, creator, and taiko player who has performed Mozart’s the Queen of the Night in over 8 productions internationally. She/They are a founding Artistic Director of Amplified Opera, and a regular company member of Toronto’s Theatre Gargantua.

THE CHILD-ISH COLLECTIVE & SUNNY DRAKE (CANADA) Aren’t we all a little childish when it comes to relationships? CHILD-ISH is a verbatim play drawn from interviews with children about love and dating. Children’s exact words are re-contextualized into adult situations for adult actors, with surprising, hilarious and moving results. CHILD-ISH transforms how we see love, children and adults.

WHY NOT THEATRE (CANADA) A new adaptation of the Indian epic The Mahabharata, ready to tour in Fall 2020. Created by Ravi Jain and an international cast entirely from the South Asian diaspora. The story centres around questions of inaction and how willful blindness makes us complicit in the end of the world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Savage Society is a modern indigenous voice carrying on the tradition of indigenous storytelling through contemporary mediums of expression. We create the annual Songs of our Land project with the N’laka’pamux community in Lytton every summer. Last year we toured the Pipeline Project with ITSAZOO Productions. ROUNDTABLE: FIELD NOTES Field Notes is an Industry Series platform for sharing current trends, inspirations and notes from the field; a space for lively conversation and collegial debate. This year’s Field Notes provocation “Power. Space. Leadership. Reflection” comes from Ann Connors, a friend, colleague and mentor who has had a prolific career over 30 years at organizations across the country as a presenter, producer, and administrator. From interrogations on whiteness (very often her own) to her daily practice of honouring the women in her life (at the time of writing this is now at #236) her fearless commentary and critical eye on the Canadian arts landscape comes from a place of deep love and radical care for our field. — JOYCE ROSARIO

Ann Connors will be joined by Dani Fecko, Kim Senklip Harvey, Fay Nass, and Jivesh Parasram — each provocateurs, leaders, and facilitators in their own right — who will lead and co-facilitate concurrent conversations based on the theme of “Power. Space. Leadership. Reflection”. Discussions will take different formats in spaces around The Post at 750 (Startup Studio, East Studio, Lounge, and Canteen). Our intention is to hold space for our colleagues to dive deep and reflect together, to share perspectives from each of our different contexts. We would like to offer the following principles, borrowed from Open Space Technology, for navigating through conversations: Whoever comes is the right people Whatever happens is the only thing that could have When it starts is the right time When it’s over, it’s over Lastly, keep in mind the Law of Two Feet — you take responsibility for what you care about and use your own two feet to move to whatever conversation you can best contribute and/or learn.

Ann Connors is an independent Arts Consultant whose practise focuses on visioning, strategic planning, touring and representation of the work of female artists. She is the former Curator of Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo and the former Executive Director of Canada’s Magnetic North Theatre Festival. She resides and works in Newfoundland, the ancestral homelands of the Beothuk and home to the Mi’kmaq, Innu, Inuit and Southern Inuit peoples.

POWER. SPACE. LEADERSHIP. REFLECTION. How do you acknowledge the power you have? How do you use that power? How do you share it? And, as importantly, how do you let go? As individuals, serious self-reflection is required to recognize the privilege we each hold — and this journey is not easy. We tend to throw rocks at the larger institutions and place blame on their governing bodies for what we feel are risk-averse and short-sighted decisions that are not responsive to our community. We point to the systems that we have created as the problem. Fair enough – much of that criticism has been earned, and we certainly have a few more windows to break on that front. But what about us? As leaders of independent companies — as artists, administrators, and curators — who hold power that others are still unable to reach, are we acknowledging the power that we hold? Are we using it to lead? Are we sharing? And how do we do what we do and respect those of us who are coming, as well as those of us who are going? — ANN CONNORS

Dani Fecko is the founder of Fascinator Management, a contemporary performance agency for Canadian talent based on Unceded Coast Salish Territory. She is on the board of the BC Arts Alliance and the Western Arts Alliance. Dani trained as a Stage Manager at Studio 58 and has tour and stage managed for Canadian companies across the globe. Kim Senklip Harvey comes from the Syilx, Tsilhqot’in, Ktunaxa, and Dakelh Nations and is a director, playwright and actor. Harvey was shortlisted for the Gina Wilkinson Prize, participated in the Banff Residency Writing in a Racialized Canada, and was appointed as one of two artists in the inaugural cohort of the National Theatre School’s Artistic Leadership Program. Kim’s first play, Kamloopa, premiered in 2018 to community acclaim. Fay Nass is the Artistic Director of the frank theatre company and a founder/ Artistic Director of Aphotic Theatre. She is a multifaceted theatre artist and a tireless advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. Fay’s research and practice often focuses on notions of gender, sexuality, race, diaspora and culture through intersectional lens. Fay holds an MFA from SFU where she teaches writing and literature to newcomers. Jiv Parasram is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher, and facilitator of Indo-Caribbean descent. His work has played across Canada, and Internationally. He is the founding Artistic Producer at Pandemic Theatre and the current Artistic Director of Rumble Theatre. Jiv grew up in K’jipuktuk (Halifax) and endeavours to split his time between T’karón:to (Toronto) and the Unceded Coast Salish Territories (Vancouver). 15

AN AWKWARD CONVERSATION An Awkward and Embarrassing Conversation About Difference is a performance/workshop based on the idea of radical transparency. Sarah Garton Stanley is the Associate Artistic Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre English Theatre and Marcus Youssef is one of Canada’s leading contemporary playwrights. During a modular performance Marcus and Sarah employ a series of rules they have devised to encourage honest debate about incendiary subject matter. They use these to interrogate each other publicly and rigorously about their own struggles in relationship to issues of power, privilege and difference. In this roundtable on dance, architecture and public space, a panel of speakers—from urban planners to architects, designers, choreographers and scenographers—respond to world renowned Finnish architecture theorist Juhani Pallasmaa, his writing on the senses and architecture, and MACHiNENOiSY’s embodied realisation of these ideas in Fragile Forms. How do we understand the space around us with our bodies? How can we touch with our eyes? How do


dance and architecture meet each other in a field of multisensory experience? Fragile Forms is an international exchange between Canada and Finland. As well as being supported by the Canada Council, Anvil Centre and City of Vancouver, it has been supported with a 3-week residency at Annantalo Arts Centre in Helsinki, Finland. An afternoon of brief presentations and a roundtable conversation to think alongside the work of Or Gallery’s 2019 artist- in-residence and PuSh Festival visiting artist Ligia Lewis. Addressing the theorists and texts that inform Lewis’s performance practice, four speakers have been invited to discuss their ideas on the performing body as a simultaneously abstracted and connective site. Lewis is a Berlin-based performer and choreographer. Engaging with affect, empathy and the sensate, her choreography considers the social implications of the body while evoking its potentiality. In 2017, Lewis was awarded a Bessie for Outstanding Production for her work minor matter and the Prix Jardin d’Europe for Sorrow Swag.

Composer Graham Reynolds has worked with director Richard Linklater on four feature films, including Before Midnight, Bernie and Last Flag Flying. But their first collaboration was on this weirdly funny but inescapably prophetic Rotoscope-animated adaptation of Philip K Dick’s novel about alternate realities, drugs, paranoia and the surveillance state. Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr. and Winona Ryder can still be detected underneath the movie’s digitally scrambled vision of suburban stoner simulacra. Since exploding onto the Vancouver theatre scene with her score for the critically acclaimed Crime and Punishment (Neworld, VMT, PuSh), composer Joelysa Pankanea’s music has been celebrated in theatres across Canada. As a composer, musical director, sound designer and percussionist, her versatility has taken her into the worlds of theatre, film, and animation and garnered her multiple awards and nominations. Joelysa is a freelance composer, and the resident composer for ARC in Toronto. FACILITATED BY Mark Haney
