INDUSTRY SERIES

WELCOME Thank you for joining us for the PuSh Assembly Industry Series at the 2018 PuSh International Performing Arts Festival! Whether a first-time or returning visitor, we hope this week is filled with connections and conversations. The schedule is conceived much like a structured improvisation—riding the line between expected outcome and spontaneous discovery. We hope the set meet-up times are balanced with opportunities to create your own pathways. This brochure is a supplement resource for the PuSh Assembly Industry Series, including profiles of our Pitch Session participants as well as our invited international delegates. If you have any questions or feedback (or would like some insider tips to the city), please don’t hesitate to connect with us.

Joyce Rosario DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We acknowledge that the PuSh Festival takes place on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations. We are grateful to be gathered here with you and recognize our privileged place on these lands. For those who may be unfamiliar with the practice of land acknowledgements: ”traditional” recognizes lands traditionally used and/or occupied by First Nations, “ancestral” recognizes land that is handed down from generation to generation, and “unceded“ refers to land that was not turned over to the Crown by a treaty or other agreement.

A CASUAL RECONSTRUCTION

THE ONLY GOOD INDIAN

Too Close to the Sun (Montreal, Canada (Australian co-production)) is a contemporary performance-making company creating interdisciplinary solo work. Described by The Huffington Post as “a company known for installation theatre works that combine intense performances with stunning aesthetics.” We use multi-layered storytelling, incorporating puppetry, projection, live film and installation, to create worlds that are inescapable, unsettling and dream-like.

creature/creature (Nadia Myre & Johanna Nutter) (Montreal, Canada) is a trans-disciplinary performance unit with a mandate to come face à face à l’autre / face to face with the other. Works include my pregnant brother / my playwright sister and CHLORE / CHLORINE (in collaboration with Le Théâtre du Grand Cheval).

Pandemic Theatre (Toronto, Canada) is a collective mandated to create, develop, and produce work from critical and underrepresented perspectives that engage social and political themes. Our work is to challenge audiences, artists, and communities to question the role of aesthetics in ideology. Another world is possible.

Selina Thompson Ltd (Leeds, United Kingdom) is an artist, performer and writer whose work has been praised internationally. Her practice is primarily intimate, political and participatory with a strong strand of public engagements that leads to joyous, highly visual work that seeks to connect to those often marginalised in the arts.

Sarah Conn & Allison O’Connor (Ottawa, Canada) create space for discourse through interdisciplinary performances and installations that combine visual art, performance art, theatre, community building and social practice. Their award-winning work has been presented nationally and internationally. They explore what it takes for us to connect, especially when we don’t agree.
