Annual Report 2012

e all, as individuals, have a chance to write our own stories. In 2012, we reflected on Push America’s 35-year story since 1977. Our chapters are filled with stories of impact and changed lives, but they’re not written by us. As an organization, our history is written by you, our volunteers, donors, participants, friends and family. For 35 years, you have made a profound impression on people across the country. You’ve made an impression on a former staff member who has gone on to continue serving others. You’ve made an impression on a child with a disability that has looked forward to a Journey of Hope visit every year for the last decade. Whatever your level of involvement with Push America, you are a vital part of our story. The words on the front and back covers of this Annual Report are just a few of the “impact words” that you’ve helped write on behalf of Push America. Through your time, your donations and your passion, among so many other things, Push America’s story is being written every day. And for that, we are forever grateful. Think about a chalkboard: it’s something we equate with learning and education. Think about all of the things we have individually learned from our experiences with Push America. Some of us have learned to be more joyful from Push America. Others have learned to live life more courageously. We have all learned life-changing lessons of our true abilities. The same could be said about what Push America has “learned” from the thousands of people with whom the organization has come into contact. Push America’s story is continuing to evolve constantly, much like it has for its first 35 years. And we are extremely excited about how the story is taking shape for the next 35 years. Last year saw the creation of one of our newest initiatives, an extension of Push America Challenge called the Enabled Athlete Program. Through the Enabled Athlete Program, Push America provides fully inclusive, adaptive sports events aiming to bridge the gap between athletes with and without disabilities. In July 2012, the first official Enabled Athlete Program event, the Apostle Islands Adventure, was held with 20 participants, including several injured military veterans. The result was incredible and has left us all excited to see where this program goes. You can read more about the Apostle Islands Adventure later in this report. Like every year, we’re already gearing up for the coming summer. Our cycling spots for Gear Up Florida and Journey of Hope have been full since the fall, which is a new record for us. Build America is currently at 25 team members, which would be a new record as well. Thanks to the continuous growth and expansion of Pi Kappa Phi, more and more undergraduates are seizing the opportunities through those events, as well as Give-A-Push Weekends, Push Camps and their own campus-wide events. They’re taking an active role in writing this chapter of Push America’s history. We had the opportunity to look back at 35 amazing years of Push America in 2012. From the first meeting between Durward Owen and Thomas Sayre at Acorn Hill to this past August in Washington, D.C. and everything in between, you’re at the heart of it all. Thank you so much for being such an integral part of Push America’s continued success. We absolutely couldn’t do it without you. All the best,

A

s a parent, I had more pride watching my son ride up to the Capitol lawn than watching him cross the stage to accept his high school diploma. Both school and sports require commitment and perseverance. The hard work can pay off and in the end the individual has something (awards, trophies, diplomas, etc.) to show for it. Journey of Hope has taught all of us that if you mentally and physically endure for others, then the reward is finding yourself.

A

s a team member you often receive praise for ‘sacrificing’ your summer for such a worthy cause. I have come to learn that we are not the ones that ‘sacrifice’; we are the ones that have the privilege to participate in such a unique opportunity. The friendships that are built, the individual and team growth that is achieved, and the countless lives that are touched along the way all help create this life changing event. We are simply the beneficiaries that were selected to gain from the experience. With the experience comes a challenge of continually serving people with disabilities and bringing the spirit of Push America to a place where it does not exist. I am confident that my teammates and I will continue to live out the ideals of Push America and help our respective communities learn the lessons we have learned this past summer.

D

ear Push America - My name is Qunis. I am in 6th grade. Thank you for helping me come to Camp Joy. My favorite things I did at camp were the swimming pond. I learned how to mountain bike. Camp Joy is fun. Thank you!

Push America disbursed nearly $270,000 to organizations all over the country through construction grants, cycling event grants and Circle of Giving grants. Those funds are used by organizations to provide more opportunities for people with disabilities in their community.

I

hope you hear it a lot – you have an incredible organization in Push America! For many of these guys, I am sure it will take years for them to fully grasp and understand the enormity of what they are accomplishing this year in both their own lives and in the lives of others. Thank you to you, the Push America staff, and the Journey of Hope teams for making days 1 through 69 happen. The impact will be experienced for years!

S

pending time with people with disabilities and working with Push America has been the biggest eye opener of my life. Realizing problems aren’t as serious as I may believe and that no matter the setbacks in life there’s nothing that can hold you down and stop you from being happy. And learning these lessons I have no one else to thank other than the people who I thought I was going to teach a lesson to, where instead, they taught me the lesson.

A

s a first time sponsor for the Journey of Hope North Route, I was blown away by the courtesy, determination and gratitude of the young men that were a part of the group. Rockford, IL was one of their last stops, and although they weren’t able to do as much hands on work as they would have liked, they were more than willing to help with the tear-down of our annual wheelchair softball tournament. A project that usually takes us several hours, these young men had completed in 10 minutes. I personally had the pleasure of taking them to an outdoor golfing, go-carting, batting and arcade facility after the work was done. This gave me the opportunity to get to know some of the guys a little better and to see their genuine heart for helping people. It was awesome to work with Push America, and I look forward to continuing a partnership in the future.

Chapters of Pi Kappa Phi donated nearly 13,000 volunteer hours in their communities. Eighty chapters, nearly one half of Pi Kappa Phi, have ongoing volunteer relationships. Through those relationships, chapters gave back over $80,000 in Circle of Giving grants.

T

his looks like I’ll be able to go down this all by myself; I won’t need any help! I can do stuff on my own now I’m going to have to know how to do that when I go off to college anyway so that really helps!

T

he gentlemen of Pi Kappa Phi at Miami (OH) choose to volunteer in the community with individuals with disabilities. The guys in Pi Kappa Phi realize that everyone belongs in our community. They are a fun loving, caring, giving group of individuals who want to form friendships with individuals with disabilities. They have set up bowling events, invited individuals to football and basketball events, have fundraisers for individuals we support, visit individuals in nursing homes, take folks out to dinner, to just name a few. The list goes on and on, and they are always trying to think of new things to do to support individuals with disabilities. Thanks so much for realizing everyone belongs.

B

etween the friendships made, the lives touched and the adventure of it all, it was the finest summer of our son David’s life.

W

hen we begin to see people for who they are, instead of who they’re not, we begin to notice their talents, creativity, energy and courage. Abilities will always overcome disabilities, as long as we give them the chance to shine through.

Give-A-Push Weekends, Push Camps and Build America saved camps over $130,000 in labor costs. In addition, members of Pi Kappa Phi, through those events, gave a combined 10,335 volunteer hours to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities.

T

T

he Arc of Southeast Iowa’s experience with Push America has been in a word, “AWESOME!” The smiles on the faces of our kids with disabilities tell it all. The cyclists and crew are so friendly and it is easy to see that they genuinely care about Push America’s mission and all the folks that they meet along the way. Push America touches lives in a profound and positive way. Journey of Hope is just that…Push America instills and inspires HOPE. The young men we have met are the finest of goodwill ambassadors and reaffirm one’s belief in the basic goodness of people; especially young people. These young men are truly the leaders of tomorrow!

T

he exciting part of Build America is the opportunity to see your projects expand the opportunities available to campers. After a long week of hard labor during the day, nothing feels better than enjoying the team’s creation with our new friends. The smiles that they bring to everyone’s face remain, to me, a true reminder of the potential impact we all possess in simply offering up one’s friendship.

he bonding experience with everyone is one that I will never forget. This was the first time I truly saw how Push America is having an impact in society today. Push America is truly building leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today.

A

s a parent, this was a great experience for me as well. We try and teach our children the value of life and that life means different things to different people, especially those who are not as fortunate as we may be. This is not always an easy task as just talking about it doesn’t always sink in. As I watched Matt begin his journey and followed him on Facebook and talked to him occasionally, I realized he got it..he understood the meaning of disability and what it meant to serve others and do for them. He understood that life is not always about “me.”

Over 150 members of Pi Kappa Phi participated in Push America’s team events, which held over 100 Friendship Visits with organizations that serve people with disabilities. Those visits help our team members see the true abilities of people with disabilities.

B

efore you do something like this, it’s like you have this enormous wall in front of you. You can’t see around it; you can’t see over it; can’t see through it. And then you run into this kind of organization and its like they took this enormous wall and they put a door right in the middle of it. And not only did they put the door there, but they led you to the door; they opened it and they led you through it. And this whole new world just opened up to you... There is no greater gift than to give of their time because it is something you can’t replace. These people not only give of their time to provide a means for us to participate but come in here and participate with us. It’s things like this that contribute so much to society. It’s humbling and makes me proud there are so many willing to do something like this.

T

P

ush America Challenge epitomizes the value of abilities! Anyone can participate, everyone shines and differences are all set aside for a greater purpose. The smiles and accomplishments that I have seen through PAC will forever be molded in my memory as one of the greatest things I’ve ever been a part of.

he cohesiveness of this group was incredible! In the past 5 years, I’ve never really had a group outdoor experience where I felt so at ease with the level of help I was receiving. This entire trip was challenge by choice, which meant if I needed assistance, I received it when I asked. No one made me feel guilty or like an imposition if I wanted to try to get something for myself.

P

artnering with Push America has been a powerful experience. Not only is their staff exceptionally skilled, but extremely passionate about serving people of all abilities. They have a mission that is built to last and Wilderness Inquiry is excited to continue the adventure with them for years to come!

Over 80 people participated in Push America Challenge events, including 17 Enabled Athletes. Those participants were able to raise over $90,000 while providing $10,000 to fund opportunities for athletes with disabilities, both civilian and military.

TODD J. PORTERFIELD (1977-2000) Todd Porterfield, member of the Alpha Delta chapter at the University of Washington, passed away on August 7, 2000. Todd was cycling on the Journey of Hope South team and was struck by a car in Lexington, North Carolina. Todd leaves a very long legacy of compassion, brotherhood, dedication and selfless giving. A Push America memorial fund has been established in his honor. To make a contribution to the fund, please send checks to the Push America office, made payable to Push America. Please indicate in the memo section "In memory of Todd J. Porterfield." The Todd J. Porterfield Memorial Fund provides an annual grant to an organization serving people with disabilities along the Journey of Hope South route. Voted on by the team, the grant is awarded to the organization that made the greatest impact on the team members.

The memory of Journey of Hope is one that we all will remember for the rest of our lives, the same goes for our experience at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge. From the moment we got to the camp to the moment we left, there was a sense of real camaraderie within the campers and the entire team. We had such a great time interacting with all the campers, and seeing what they do on a daily basis. It was amazing to see how Pi Kappa Phi has directly involved itself within the camp. Our team enjoyed itself so much in Rutledge, and it was just what we needed to continuously remind ourselves that Journey of Hope is so much bigger than what we do. We are more than confident that The Todd J. Porterfield grant given will be used in the best way possible to further improve the great things going on at Camp Twin Lakes!

JASON R. TIRADO (1976-2000) Jason Tirado, member of the Zeta Epsilon chapter at George Mason University, passed away on April 30, 2000 from a fall during a hiking trip with friends in the North Carolina mountains. Jason was a Journey of Hope cyclist in 1999 and was spending the 2000 spring semester in North Carolina coordinating Gear Up Florida as project manager. Jason is missed by so many people. He impacted the lives of hundreds during his time with Push America. A Push America memorial fund has been established in his honor. To make a contribution to the fund, please send checks to the Push America office, made payable to Push America. Please indicate in the memo section “In memory of Jason R. Tirado.” The Jason R. Tirado Memorial Fund provides an annual grant to an organization serving people with disabilities along the Journey of Hope North route. Voted on by the team, the grant is awarded to the organization that made the greatest impact on the team members.

The Journey of Hope North Route’s experience at Envision epitomizes the reasons why we had the best summer of our lives. The visit at Envision consisted of team members giving lessons to friends teaching them how to ride a bicycle as they navigated an obstacle course, an absolutely amazing dance party, great food that was cooked by the team and Envision staff, along with plenty of smiles and laughs. Envision embodies all of the ideals of Push America: Abilities, Teamwork, Empathy and Integrity, which is why we knew that the organization will use the Jason R. Tirado Memorial Grant to continue to have a profound impact on many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Push America disburses these two grants in memory of two men that continue to make a huge impact on the organization. If you would like to help their legacy live on through these grants, please send checks to Push America with “In memory of JRT/TJP” in the memo line.

Push America hired fundraising counsel to secure the legacy and long term viability of the organization. Although the investment has increased the management and fundraising percentage for the year, the investment has made Push America stronger while creating an endowment to secure the organization’s future for generations to come.

COMMITMENT CAMPAIGN In 2012, Push America launched the Commitment Campaign with a first phase target of securing $3 million in philanthropic investment, building toward a goal of an endowment that will support 25% of the annual budget. This major effort is founded on the conviction that Push America’s future cannot be left to chance. We would like to thank the generous individuals who gave to Push America for the Commitment Campaign. Todd & Diane Becker Corey & Kim Dillon

Every May, 35 undergraduates and alumni cycle 800 miles through 13 Florida cities before ending in Tallahassee. Gear Up Florida raises more than $90,000 for people with disabilities through team member fundraising and corporate sponsorships.

Each summer, 100 undergraduate and alumni members from across the country cycle 4,000 miles from San Francisco, Seattle or Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. participating in activities and events to promote a greater understanding of people with disabilities. Through team member fundraising and corporate sponsorships, the event raises more than $500,000.

Build America is a six-week summer program where members of Pi Kappa Phi will construct accessible environments at six camps that support people with disabilities across the country. Team members have the opportunity for extended personal interaction with the campers who will benefit from their hard work, making this a very unique and life enriching experience for all involved.

Push America Challenge is a program giving everyone the opportunity to display their human ability by competing in endurance events across the country and raising funds and awareness for people with disabilities. The program is designed to provide opportunities for people to take an unselfish approach to endurance competition.

Push Camps provide undergraduate members the opportunity to spend a high quality spring break renovating camps and building accessible environments that will enhance the summer camp experience of a person with a disability. This alternative spring break is programmed around hard work, volunteerism, leadership, brotherhood and fun.

Give-A-Push Weekends are national service programs that provide funding and manpower to build and renovate structures such as accessible fishing piers, boardwalks, pavilions and playgrounds for facilities that support people with disabilities.

DISABILITY AWARENESS - Pi Kappa Phi organizes a variety of events to increase disability awareness on campus and in the community. Events like wheelchair basketball, guest speakers and Empathy Dinners help members of Pi Kappa Phi to spread a message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities.

CYCLING EVENTS GRANTS - The Journey of Hope and Gear Up Florida teams are fortunate to have the support of organizations that serve people with disabilities across the country. Push America rewards them with grants to provide direct support to the people they serve.

FUNDRAISING - Pi Kappa Phis across the nation have collectively raised over $14 million in support of the various programs Push America offers. Members create unique events at every campus. CONSTRUCTION GRANTS - At the foundation of Push America is construction. Through the organization’s construction programs (Give-A-Push Weekends, Push Camps, AccessABILITY projects and Build America), Push America awards grants to organizations in various amounts to cover material costs.

VOLUNTEERISM - Pi Kappa Phi chapters across the country are becoming more involved in their communities through volunteer relationships with local organizations that support people with disabilities. Pi Kappa Phi chapters who have a volunteer relationship are eligible for grants through Push America to help people with disabilities in their local community.

CIRCLE OF GIVING GRANTS - Push America also awards Circle of Giving grants to organizations that have ongoing volunteer relationships with local Pi Kappa Phi chapters. Chapters give back 25% of their total fundraising to the local organization with whom they volunteer.

AccessABILITY - This construction program provides opportunities for Pi Kappa Phis across the country to get involved in their local community. Through the construction of wheelchair ramps, Push America is making homes more accessible for families year after year. This program is designed to benefit families who have a family member with a disability.

SUMMER FELLOWSHIP - Push America offers Summer Fellowships motivating college students to exercise their commitment to service. This financial stipend allows an undergraduate to serve at a summer camp committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities.
