The vision for our 2019-2020 season is that we continue to disrupt the widespread notion that modern society does not want to leave the living room, flipping that idea on its head by making The Performing Arts Center itself a living room for the entire community. What happens in a living room? Shared experience, and critical conversation. Here at The PAC, we continue to provide experiences that spark conversations and make connections; in so doing, we further enhance our reputation as a welcoming community hub for an increasingly diverse audience base. We’re excited about welcoming friends old and new to our stages, and about a season that includes more dance, more family events, and more audience engagement. A special mini-series of events will shine a spotlight on traditional (and not so traditional) artists from Mexico. You’ll also be treated to four brandnew works commissioned by The PAC, two of which will have their world premieres right here. Join us and “experience something real” — a season of performing arts events that inspire, engage, and spark critical conversations.

“…pushes the boundaries of tap while exposing its true nature: that it is music” —The New York Times This electrifying company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap.” Founded by Michelle Dorrance, 2015 MacArthur Fellow and 2018 Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, the company has, in less than a decade, established an identity that honors tap dance’s uniquely American history in a new, dynamic, and compelling context—blending traditional technique with cutting-edge choreography and inventive rhythms. The astounding skill and exuberance of this show-stopping group thrills audiences and challenges expectations every time they take the stage.

A.I.M Join us to experience the avant premiere of An Untitled Love from the award-winning choreographer and Purchase alumnus Kyle Abraham.

This evening-length dance work is sonically rooted in R&B/Soul Music, comprised of the catalogue of Grammy Award-winning R&B legend D’Angelo. It is a creative exaltation, centered on the often overlooked love and unity that exists within the black community. A Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award winner, Doris Duke Artist Award winner, and MacArthur Fellow, Abraham is one of today’s most in-demand choreographers, and the first black choreographer commissioned to create a work for the New York City Ballet in over a decade. Abraham was born into the hip-hop culture of the late 1970s and incorporates an artistic upbringing of classical cello, piano, and the visual arts into his work with A.I.M. Through a sensual and provocative vocabulary, A.I.M strives to create an avenue for personal investigation, exposed on stage.

Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American dance from its inception in 1946. The Limón Dance Company brings the immediacy of our common experience onto the stage, exuberantly and intensely, with musical and fully lived dancing. They speak, urgently and joyfully, of our lives now: how we face the world and how we sense that world around us, how we can be with others, how we can destroy the bonds between us, and how we can create community. The classic Limón works, like Shakespeare’s, are as perceptive today as when they were made, and the dancers use them to talk to us of today’s individual struggles and triumphs, and of racism, domestic abuse, and our joyful ability to create community.

RUBBERBAND The explosive Montreal-based RUBBERBAND has a style all its own, creating and producing innovative, high-energy, physically demanding works that are inspired by breakdancing, classical ballet, and dance theatre. Fascinated by the raw dynamic of hip-hop and breakdancing and the purity of classical formalism, choreographer and RUBBERBAND Artistic Director Victor Quijada has been demolishing barriers between these contrasting dance styles for 17 years. On the program, an evening-length work, Ever So Slightly. Set to live music, the production combines delicacy and finesse with brute, high-voltage movement to capture the energy of urgency, revolt, and flight from danger — a quest to find tranquility within chaos.

Infused with the scent and sensibility of voodoo, it is music that refuses to obscure their homeland’s deep African heritage. These are rhythms that were “torn from Africa and secretly replanted in a new land.” But this “replanting” sowed a new identity. As such, the music of Chouk Bwa is a proud statement of Haitian culture, of a nation that has known the hardest of times but whose spirit remains as tough as those ancient drums. PEPSICO THEATRE

The Boy Who Grew Flowers Adapted from the picture book by Mara McEwin and choreographed by Emily Bunning, this is the story of young Rink Bowagon, who lives on top of Lonesome Mountain with his unusual family of rattlesnake tamers and shape-shifters. The townspeople agree that Rink’s family are quite strange, but they are unaware of Rink’s spectacular gifts. Whenever the moon is full, Rink sprouts beautiful flowers all over his body. Support the performing arts you love and keep them thriving! There is something magical about experiencing a live performance: the excitement as the lights go down and anticipation as the curtain rises; the connection felt with artists as their work inspires you; watching a child’s eyes light up with joy and wonder; conversations sparked by a shared moment seen onstage; students working with renowned artists and filled with gratitude for the opportunity; lives enriched by the power of the performing arts. Unforgettable moments like these are what The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College is all about. Your generosity is what makes it all possible as ticket sales do not cover the costs.
