Building on the outstanding success of our Teaching Artist program, we proudly announce that for the 2017-18 season, one of our teaching artists will be available to visit your classroom before any event that you attend at the Performing Arts Center. Specially trained teaching artists will lead your students in integrated classroom activities that link our performances to Core Curriculum and NYS Learning Standards in ways that will leave students engaged and inspired. Monday, October 16, 2017 10:00–11:00am + Q&A & Noon–1:00pm + Q&A When Shasta’s father loses his job, she is devastated to learn that plans for her upcoming birthday party must be significantly downsized. As the story progresses, Shasta and Simon meet a mysterious Traveler who gives them a seed that will make a tree grow leaves of money. Through a truly magical journey, the two ultimately learn that being a loyal friend is worth more than a big party or having all the latest toys. In the end, our friends, family, and imaginations are truly our greatest assets. This production introduces elementary audiences to early notions related to financial literacy, explores the idea of “needs vs. wants,” and affirms the power of imagination and creativity.

Purchase College’s student repertory company whose talent – in the words of Peter Kramer of The Journal News -- “is Broadway bound” - are the next generation to put a fresh spin on Arthur Miller’s mid-century masterwork.

Black Violin Friday, November 3, 2017 10:00–11:00am + Q&A Back by popular demand! Kev Marcus and Wil B were classical violin sensations at Florida’s famed Dillard Performing Arts High School. Together with DJSPS and drummer Nathaniel Stokes, they set out to merge their classical music training with their love of hip-hop, bringing the two genres together with a backbeat and four strings apiece. Above all, these ridiculously talented musical innovators have dedicated themselves to inspiring musicians of all ages to investigate the world of classical music, as well as the nearly forty years of hip-hop history. The New York Times said “…Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloist; …fiddle as if at a hoedown…strum the violin and viola like guitars.” The result of their work is unlike anything heard before and a unique experience for all ages.

Thursday, November 9, 2017 10:00–11:00am + Q&A, & Noon–1:00pm + Q&A From the same company that earned international acclaim for its unique interpretations of the works of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar comes a new show, Guess How Much I Love You , an original stage adaptation of Sam McBratney’s story originally illustrated by Anita Jeram, alongside the illustrator’s companion celebration of the joy of reading, I Love My Little Storybook . Using the company’s world-famous mixture of innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects, and evocative original music to provide very young audiences with an effortless introduction to the performing arts and the excitement of reading.

The American Revolution Theater Unspeakable
Wednesday, November 15, 2017 10:00–11:00am + Q&A, & Noon–1:00pm + Q&A History in 50 minutes -- seven actors, two feet off the ground, share 21 square feet of space to recreate the entire American fight for independence from Lexington to Yorktown. With only the actor’s bodies, voices, and (pantomimed) cannons, the show evokes an epic period in American history. Combining tongue-in-cheek humor with a dash of derring-do, The American Revolution displays Theater Unspeakable’s rowdy brand of bare-boned and imaginative physical theater.

Punctuated with lively anecdotes about the author and his swift descent into madness, this performance also encompasses the humor and banter that audiences have always loved in Kane’s performances. PAWS: Performing Arts Workshops for Secondary Students Participatory Program for Your Students Tuesday, January 9, 2018 8:45am–2:00pm The creative energy of PAWS continues as your students will again have a unique opportunity to experience a variety of performing arts workshops in an exhilarating day. Choosing three workshops from numerous offerings, students learn skills and techniques not usually taught in their own schools, such as Latin Dance, Stage Fighting, Improvisation, and Directing. Student responses from previous programs: “It’s indescribable how amazing the class was.” “I was inspired.” “PAWS helps me improve on things I’m passionate about.” “The whole day was one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had.” $10 per student

How to Survive Middle School Robert Post Tuesday, January 30, 2018 10:00–11:00am + Q&A, & Noon–1:00pm + Q&A Comedian Robert Post barely survived middle school. Struggling because of various learning disabilities, he found that making people laugh saved him. This brand-new multimedia performance -- presenting real issues affecting students today, including social media, testing, bullying, and peer pressure – uses video testimonials by students and their advocates, along with a generous dose of Post’s signature humor, to engage students and adults alike. One of Robert Post’s childhood report cards in Columbus, Ohio, gave a hint as to how his future might unfold. Not amused by Robert’s antics, his teacher created a whole new column of categories describing maladaptive behavior. Happily for audiences around the world, Post stuck with antics. The result: a dazzling performance that’s sure to speak directly to student audiences and beyond.

But when a peculiar package on the Poppers’ porch produces a penguin, chaos waddles into their lives! At the dawn of the 19th century, mankind first harnessed the power of electricity, the world changed, and the journey continues. This unique event, co-commissioned by Doktor Kaboom and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, returns to The Performing Arts Center thanks to popular demand. Hold on to your hats! Topics covered include: safety; Tesla; Edison; Faraday; lightning bolts; current; voltage; conductive and nonconductive media; electrical arcs; light emission; sparks; resistance; magnetic fields; electric generators; mechanical energy to electrical energy; electromagnetic coils and conductors.

My Father’s Dragon Enchantment Theatre Company Based on the book by Ruth Stiles Gannett Tuesday, March 13, 2018 10:00–11:00am + Q&A, & Noon–1:00pm + Q&A The beloved Newbery Honor book about a resourceful boy named Elmer comes delightfully to life in this charming tale about compassion, courage, and friendship. Join Elmer as he sets off on a daring adventure to rescue a baby dragon who’s being held captive by the ferocious animals of Wild Island. With pluck and ingenuity Elmer makes his way to the Island, outwits the wild animals, and saves Boris, the dragon. But can they find their way back home? Using puppets, masks, magical scenic effects, and original music, Enchantment Theatre Company brings Elmer’s marvelous quest to the stage, with an adventure that reminds us all that we are never too young to make a difference.

What if that magic talent showed kind people kindness and bad people their badness? Would you sing out? Pixing tells the story of Ben, a jester-in-training, as he discovers, shares, and is badly bullied for his special gift of song in a brand-new production by gifted storyteller David Gonzalez. In this specially commissioned piece, originating at The Performing Arts Center, students can participate in the premier performances of a brand new work by this renowned storyteller.
