PULSE PROJECTS

Josh Azzarella

Jim Campbell

PULSE Art Fair’s signature PULSE Projects program is committed to the presentation and promotion of audience-engaging large-scale sculptures, installations, and performances. PULSE Projects is part of our continuing mission to link an international roster of premier contemporary galleries and artists with local cultural institutions, communities, and audiences. Among the artists whose sculptures and installations have been presented in the past are Ben Wolf, Orly Genger, Christy Gast, Leo Villareal, Clifton Childree, Anthony Lister, R. Luke Dubois, and William Powhida.

Untitled #125 (Hickory), 2009 – 2011 HD video, 5.1 surround sound; dimensions variable, 120 hours Courtesy of Mark Moore Gallery, Booth B-402 Untitled #125 (Hickory) is a work derived from the 6 minute and 30 second scene in The Wizard of Oz in which Dorothy is transported from Kansas to Oz. Using a technique based on layering and recursive frames, this moment of transformative transition is extended to envelop the entire time of her experience. Just as dreams which realistically occur in flashes of seconds in our brains can seem like hours or days, so Dorothy’s hours of unconsciousness take on a five-day journey of transformation in Oz.

Exploded View, 2011 1152 LEDs, custom electronics; 46.5 x 72 x 38 in Edition of 3 and 1 AP Courtesy of Hosfelt Gallery, Booth E-302 Shipping courtesy of Elizabeth Stevens & Company Jim Campbell uses technologies developed for information transfer and storage to explore human perception and memory. His exploration of the distinction between the analog world and its digital representation is a metaphor for the human talent for poetic understanding or “knowledge” as opposed to the mathematics of “data.” In his “Exploded” works, three-dimensional, analog information is captured in the two-dimensional medium of video, which is then represented in a three-dimensional form, rather than on a flat plane.

Yorgo Alexopoulos No Feeling Is Final, 2011 Limited edition video wall, continuous loop, digital animation with sound on media player and eight Planar flat panel monitors; 9 minutes and 23 seconds Courtesy of Cristin Tierney Gallery, Booth E-106, with special thanks to Planar Created for projection or flat screens, No Feeling Is Final is a synchronized composite of two horizontally aligned high-definition video frames with a continuous looping duration of 10 minutes. An animated grid of digitally manipulated paintings, photographs, and graphics moves across the screen, and an abstract narrative unfolds, composed of archetypal images and symbolic shapes.

Roberley Bell Other Landscape Bench, 2009 / 2011 Pigmented fiberglass, blown glass, steel, foam, real flowers; 58 x 32 x 28 in Courtesy of Black & White Gallery / Project Space, Booth C-105 Bell’s most recent work departs from the overtly adorned surfaces of the earlier Flower Blob series to reveal the form stripped bare, increased in scale, and swelling and bursting with energy. In the artist’s words, “there is certain sexuality as if fresh pollen is oozing over the surface.”

Woojin Chang –scape, 2011 Digital print, image constructed from scanned drawings; 348 x 103 in Courtesy of Conner Contemporary Art, Booth C-201 PULSE Presents Award-winner of ACADEMY 2011 hosted by Conner Contemporary, Washington, D.C. Chang completed his MFA at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD The –scape series is about the existence of individuals within the greater volume of society, depicted in the form of a landscape composed of tiny beings, each struggling for survival. In a sense, the monstrous wave that devours the individual is none other than our other self; we are both the unopposable force of nature and the perilous being in front of it. The resulting scene is a manifestation of the terror and beauty of our world, of the sublime.

What Lays Beneath, 2011 Single-channel video projection, glycerin soap, resin, monofilament line; dimensions variable Courtesy of Galerie Anita Beckers, Booth B-203 What Lays Beneath is a video, sound, and soap installation dealing with the current state of affairs in the Middle East, the constant turmoil and everlasting spectacle of war. The presence of conflict is eminent. Animals become metaphors for what is happening below. Civilians have turned into predators, acting on their primal instinct to survive. When once they were the hunted, now they have become the hunters, going after mechanical beasts.

Okay, 2008 Animal, 2010 Transforming Beauty, 2011 Blu-ray editions; dimensions variable Courtesy of Joshua Liner Gallery, Booth D-204 In these three “motion paintings” – a term coined by Ellis – the images are painted in improvised, overlapping patterns on the studio floor. Overhead, a dome is constructed to support a time-lapse camera and control the lighting during production. Later, these images are compiled into a stopmotion video.

Irregular Columns (California Trees), 2010 Imploded stainless steel; each approx. 95 x 16 x 15 in Courtesy of SAMUEL FREEMAN , Booth E-404 Hilgemann creates three-dimensional, geometrical, hollow forms which, in their pure austerity and reduction, constitute an idealized structure of classical beauty. These “pure” conceptual volumes are then deformed through the impact of natural forces. Using a vacuum generator, the artist removes the air from inside the construction, allowing the external atmospheric pressure to act with such force as to cause it to implode, buckle, and fragment without, however, completely destroying the basic form.

PAINTED/STACKED – PULSE/ MIAMI, 2011 Plywood, metal studs, electrical conduit, construction lumber, CMU; dimensions variable Courtesy of Galerie Michael Sturm, Booth E-104 Russell Maltz’s sculptural projects often utilize stacked and painted commercial building materials to establish formal and physical relationships with existing architectures, including college campuses, shopping centers, museums, and public spaces. His studio-based and site-specific works continue to expand the legacies of conceptual and minimalist art, focusing on issues of scale, density, documentation, and systemic progressions.

Michael Dinges Lifeboat: The Wreck of the Invisible Hand, 2011 Engraved vinyl siding, wood, and acrylic paint; 132 x 42 x 22 in Courtesy of Packer Schopf Gallery, Booth E-407 “Underwater” is a neologism – referring to the state of owing more on one’s home than its current market value — that arose in the wake of the collapse of the housing bubble in the late 2000’s. Lifeboat: The Wreck of the Invisible Hand is a full-sized “lifeboat” fabricated by the artist out of vinyl siding and engraved on its exterior with images and text exploring the intertwined stories of labor, consumerism, and the environment, as well as the political and social fallout from the excesses of globalization.

Dan Gioia Sphere, 2011 Sod and steel; 60 x 84 x 84 in Courtesy of Conner Contemporary Art, Booth C-201 PULSE Presents Award-winner of ACADEMY 2011 hosted by Conner Contemporary, Washington, D.C. Gioia completed his BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD Sphere was made to bridge a connection between viewer and sculpture via physical interaction. It invites the viewer to touch the grass, and the sculpture relies on that contact to survive. If the viewer does not engage and rotate the sculpture to give all sides access to sunlight and water, it will die.

Nici Jost Just a Piece of Meadow, 2011 Plexibox, monitor, grass, soil; 36 x 36 in Courtesy of balzerARTprojects and Nici Jost, Booth I-202 Please view this missing piece of meadow at balzerARTprojects, Booth I-202.

Michael Laube 22-11, 2011 Acrylic paint on acrylic glass; each 23.6 x 23.67 in Courtesy of Kuckei + Kuckei, Booth D-205 In the group of works that Michael Laube continues to develop, in variations and metamorphoses, the artist uses Plexiglas as his ground, adding colored structures in series of stripes. Each stripe condenses in itself a possibility of pictoriality between the concrete actuality of the respective color and a wide variety of references.

MAC PREMO The Dumpster Project, 2011 Mixed-media assemblage in 30-yard Dumpster; 135 x 102 x 281 in Courtesy Pavel Zoubok Gallery, Booth B-400 1. I have archived much of my life through collected objects. 2. I have moved into a smaller studio, making it necessary that I get rid of a lot of these objects. 3. I have done so by using them as the raw material for one enormous collage, created inside a 30-yard Dumpster. 4. O h, also, I have photographed around 500 of these objects and display one daily at www.thedumpsterproject.com, accompanied by a brief history of each item.

PULSE PLAY >

Parallelistic Imitations, 2010 Mirrors Perspex, dimensions variable Courtesy of Man&Eve; Booth I-203 Shipping courtesy of Elizabeth Stevens & Company Parallelistic Imitations is a series of geometric forms, constructed from mirrored surfaces that immediately disorient, interrupt, and disrupt the spaces that they inhabit. Drawing influence from the utopian architectural designs of the 1950’s and 1960’s, from “Architectures Fantastiques” and Le Corbusier’s belief in the mathematical order of the universe, Steppan’s work, at first perplexing creates worlds within worlds. The mirror, historically representative of a gateway into other dimensions or entry point into the subconscious, leads us into a never-ending labyrinthine gaze.

PULSE Play is a curated video program, presenting work by both emerging and established artists. Among the international roster of past PULSE Play curators are Todd B. Smith, Marina Fokidis, Bill Arning, and Christopher Eamon.

Santiago Taccetti Smoke & Mirrors / Nothing to See Here, 2011 Plexiglas, wood, fluorescent lights, smoke machine; 96 x 96 x 96 in Courtesy of Black & White Gallery / Project Space, Booth C-105 Smoke and Mirrors / Nothing to See Here confronts the viewer as a great summary of the mechanisms of seduction. It also makes a parody of the sad side of the system — the exclusion. The show is not for everyone, the illusion is — it’s even public.

Domesticity II For PULSE Play, Lucie Fontaine will create a domestic setting in which she will organize a program of videos that are themselves dealing with contents related to domesticity. The environment she will present in Miami will resemble a common living room, similar to the famous first scene of The Simpsons. Here the visitor is invited to sit down and enjoy what’s on TV, which is in fact the video program selected by Lucie Fontaine. Furthermore, Lucie Fontaine has requested that all furniture should be bought at IKEA, and in a way this environment is not only made to present the video program at the fair, but also as an artwork itself, an instruction piece of sorts: she has made a list of items (a sofa, a coffee table, a TV, fake plants, etc.) to be bought exclusively at the Swedish department store. This project is part of “Domesticity,” a series of exhibitions conceived by Lucie Fontaine. The first iteration was part of the Prague Biennale 5 and the third part will be presented at Marianne Boesky Gallery as part of a larger project called “Estate.”
