FOR YOUR INFORMATION A Successful Nooks and Crannies! We had over 100 people attend the 4-H Nooks and Crannies event on Saturday, February 15, 2014. Hands on activities and workshops were sponsored by all of our 4-H Councils and Advisory Committees, as well as by the CSU Extension Office to help families learn about the ―nooks and crannies of 4-H‖ while having some fun! Both new and returning 4-H families participated in a wide variety of workshops. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this day a success. We learned a lot and hope to improve the event next year.

Pueblo County 4-H CAMP The 2014 4-H Camp will be held July 18-20, 2014 at Beulah Mountain Park in Beulah, Colorado. Recruit within your club for participation in this camp – it’s a BLAST!!! If you would like a camp counselor to come to your club to talk about the event, let us know and we’ll send one to help you recruit. Let’s make the best 4-H Camp Pueblo County has ever had! More details about registration will be coming soon so keep checking Friday In4mation. Counselors: Keep an eye on the Friday In4mation as we are working on the application now. Counselors must be 4-H age 14-18 (or 13 with 4-H camp experience). Counselors will be chosen on their camp experience, availability to attend meetings, and overall 4-H experience. 4-H Parent/Leader Group Meetings When:

Wednesday, April 9* and Wednesday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. *Note: The April meeting is a week later than usual. Where: CSU Extension Office, 701 Court Street, Suite C

Pueblo County 4-H Youth Leadership Society At the March Leadership Society meeting, six members competed for district office nominations. (One member later withdrew.) It was an exciting night and those in attendance had a difficult task in determining which members were best suited for which positions. The members running for office gave speeches on leadership and answered four questions written by the youth. All five of the members who ran for district office participated in a workshop later in the week hosted by Jay Brown. Jay provided helpful tips on running for office and created mock interviews for the members to participate in. On March 15 at the South Central District Retreat, our members had the tough task of running for office against others in both District 7 and the South Central 4-H District. All of the Pueblo County nominees won their elections, some in very competitive elections! Congratulations to them! They are as follows: District 7 President (State Officer Team Member): Becca Lane District 7 Vice President: Garrett Brown District 7 Secretary: Shania Roberts South Central 4-H District President: Clara McClure South Central 4-H District Vice President: Nick Johnston South Central 4-H District Secretary: Jacob Torres (of Las Animas County) The Leadership Society Executive team will be meeting in April to make plans for a May/June Leadership Society meeting. All 4-H members who are 4-H age 13-18 are invited to join us! Look to the Friday In4mation emails for more details.

International 4-H Youth Exchange Pueblo County will be hosting the IFYE delegate on April 7, 8, and 9. She will probably be arriving in Pueblo on Sunday, April 6. We are looking for 4-H families to host her during her time here. If you would be interested in hosting Lana, please email or call Carol in the Extension Office. There is some host information that needs to filled out ahead of time. Lana will be in Rye at the elementary school on Tuesday morning, so someone from Rye might want to host her that night. More information about international travel or hosting opportunities through 4-H can be found on the Colorado 4-H Website at: http://www.colorado4h.org/international/index.php 2

FOR YOUR INFORMATION E-Record Books—NEW Policy! Members must do three things to complete (pass) their 4-H projects: 1. Participate in 4-H community service 2. Do a 4-H speech or demonstration 3. Complete their record book with a score of 70% or above All members will now be required to score 70% or above on all of their record books. If a member fails do so, they will not have completed the project. This means they will not be able to take that project again the next year, and consequently will not be able to show in that project the next year. For example, if a leathercraft member fails to complete the project, they cannot take any leathercraft units the following 4-H year. Failure to turn in a record book will result in a score of 0%. Anyone with a learning disability that needs extra accommodations should provide us with a letter from their school Special Education Teacher prior to turning in the e-record. Contact the CSUE office for more details. How record books are reviewed and graded depends on the project area: Shooting Sports: Record books for shooting sports are to be turned in to the Extension Office by the third Friday in June. They will be graded by committee. Dog and Horse: Record books for dog and horse projects are to be turned in to the Extension office by the second Monday in September. They will be graded by committee. Livestock: Record books for livestock projects are to be graded by the project leader. The two best records in each age group for each club, and scores for all other books must be turned in to the Extension office by the second Monday in September. General and Consumer Science: Record books for General and Consumer Science projects will be turned in at the County Fair with the member’s exhibit (only if the member chooses to exhibit.) A blue or red award on the project at County Fair will be considered a 70% or above on General and Consumer Science project e-records. If the member chooses not to exhibit, or receives a white ribbon, the e-records will be turned in to their project leader and graded prior to the second Monday in September. Club leaders must submit these books with the scores to the CSU Extension Office by the second Monday in September. The official score sheet should be used when grading record books. Score sheets (rubrics) are posted on the county 4-H website and can usually be found on the project area pages.

E-Record Help Please don’t wait to work on e-records or look at them until right before they are due! If you need help with your e-records, please ask your project leader and plan to attend the County Fair Information Night and Ice Cream Social where we will review what you have completed so far and help you to improve (see front page of this newsletter for details.) E-records are an important part of the 4-H project and the 4-H program. All of the e-records have been updated for this year so be sure you are using a 2013-2014 record book. They can be found on the state website at http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/erecords/ index.php

Report Forms - Date Due August 11, 2014 If you are unfamiliar with Report Forms, ask someone in your club who has done a RF or ask the office. It is a great way to track your 4-H work, experiences, leadership, citizenship and community service. They come in really handy when you apply for college and jobs! Youth must complete RF’s to be eligible for Globetrotters/Travel Group, some awards and to be a camp counselor. There will be a Report Form workshop Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Pueblo County 4-H Foundation We’ve had a turnover in the membership of the Pueblo County 4-H Foundation, and the Foundation is now seeking new members, especially those with an interest in fundraising. If you know of anyone in the community who might like to be part of a Foundation that is re-inventing itself, please contact Chris Cude, Pueblo County 4-H Foundation President at 240-2452 for more information. This is an exciting time!

New 4-H Volunteer Process & Training If you are interested in being involved in 4-H or know someone who would be a good 4-H leader, please have them call us for more information. As we recruit new 4-H members, it’s also important that we train new, qualified leaders. Our program can only grow if the number of great volunteers grows! The process has changed for becoming a 4-H volunteer—we have tried to make it easier! The former paperwork is now completed electronically in 4HOnline, as is the background check. The training is also an online course that can be done anytime 24/7 from any computer. Volunteers can work on the course at a time that is convenient for them and stop and start the training at any time. The course takes about 2-3 hours to complete depending on your level of knowledge about 4-H.

NOTE: In the event a member turns in an unsatisfactory record book, they should be given one week to revise their record book to reach a score of 70% or higher, prior to the final due date. If revisions are required, they will not be eligible for end of the year record book awards but will satisfy the completion requirement. Clubs may set more strict requirements for club participation, so please check with your club leader and review your club bylaws for additional club participation requirements.

GENERAL, FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE PROJECTS Important Policy Change! Be sure to read the article on page 3 of this newsletter regarding the e-record policy change, which mostly applies to the General, Family and Consumer Science project areas. Just as the animal projects have been required to earn a 70% on their record books, General, Family and Consumer Science Projects are now required to do the same. If a member fails to complete their project, they will not be able to take that project area again the next year. Contact Devin in the CSUE Office with any questions you might have regarding this policy change.

Group Project Meetings If your club is hosting project meetings and would like to open those project meetings up to other members around the county, please contact the CSU Extension Office with the project you will be working on, the name and contact information of the project leader, and the dates/times you will be meeting this 4-H year. We would like to encourage the sharing of knowledge and resources amongst clubs because that truly enriches our program! If you are a member looking for a project leader in a specific area, please contact our office so that we can try to assist you.

LIVESTOCK Sheep and Goat Weigh In The Sheep and Goat Weigh in will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in the Sheep and Swine Barn on the State Fairgrounds. You can arrive anytime between 8:00 a.m. and11:00 a.m. Please be aware that the day may run long because we will be retinal scanning all animals. This is our first try at it, so please be patient with our staff and volunteers. Retinal scanning will go much faster if your sheep and goats are halter broke and familiar with having their faces touched. Please work with your animals prior to weigh-in. Thank you! Note: Traditionally there has been an MQA/PQA the same day. That is NOT the case this year. We had an MQA/PQA in March and we’ll have another on April 22, 2014. Please plan accordingly.

2014 Meat/Pork Quality Assurance (MQA/PQA) Policy Youth in ALL breeding or market livestock projects (rabbits, poultry, cattle, sheep, swine and goats) must take the Meat Quality Assurance training once as a junior and once as a senior (age group division for MQA 8-13 junior, 14-above senior). If you are showing SWINE at the Pueblo County Fair, then you must take the MQA/PQA training yearly, or if you are eligible, test out. We offered one MQA/PQA in March. If you missed it, we’ll be offering a make-up classroom version on Tuesday, April 22. The class starts promptly at 6:30pm at the CSUE Office, please arrive on time. If you are required to take it this year and unable to attend either Pueblo County MQA/PQA, then you may attend in another county. NEW THIS YEAR! You must complete MQA/PQA by May 1 to be eligible to participate in County Fair. Please Note—No MQA will be provided at the Sheep and Goat Weighin or at the Showcase Sale Mandatory Meeting. Public confidence our meat products is extremely important to the success of the livestock industry. Youth livestock projects play an important role in building or losing the trust of our consumers. It is important that youth livestock exhibitors exceed the standard in producing quality, defect-free livestock for our consumers. In the past, a very small number if exhibitors have given youth livestock shows a bad name by using unethical and unsafe techniques to ―win at all cost.‖ As a result, we have implemented a strong Meat Quality Assurance program in Colorado. Through the MQA workshops youth learn ethics and good production practices needed to produce a high quality, desirable product for the American Consumer. If you have questions about needing to attend this training, contact Marnie in the Extension Office.
