FOR YOUR INFORMATION Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines…

Important Leader Enrollment Reminder

The office and fair board will strictly enforce all deadlines. Remember, meeting deadlines is a valuable life skill. Our office will make it a priority to get information out in a timely manner, so that you have time to meet the deadlines. If we receive information late or after the newsletter has gone out for the month, deadlines will be shorter. This information will appear in our Friday 4-H In4mation email. If you are not receiving this email please let us know so we can figure out what the problem is. Thanks!

This is a reminder that 4-H leaders must re-enroll in 4-H each year. All leaders must enroll in 4-H using 4HOnline to be considered a leader and to be covered by our insurance. If you have not done so this year, please let us know so we can help you get this done! If you skip a year as a volunteer, you will need to re-do all of your training and background checks.

Achievement Night "Year in Review" Slideshow Attention all 4-Her's! We need pictures (digital please) for the 2013 Achievement Night slideshow. One of our 4-H Clubs, Pups and Hounds, has offered to assemble the slideshow for us. Please take and send pictures of your club's events, projects, community service, activities, etc., from this 4-H year, and send to pupsandhounds.slideshowpics@gmail.com. We would love to have all clubs and projects represented - so get to snapping!

Report Form Workshop—July 24 Need a little help with your report form? Never done a report form? Have questions about your present report form? Then this workshop is for you! The Extension Office personnel will offer an informational and working workshop to help you with your report form. Many of the awards, trips, camps, etc in Pueblo require that you turn in a national report form. This is not your record book – it is a portfolio of information about your total 4-H career. The workshop will be held on July 24th in the Extension Office meeting room from 5 – 8 pm. You can download a report form on our Pueblo County 4-H website. Report forms will be due August 12th by 5:00 pm. Plan to attend and bring all your questions!

Fall Leader’s Forum The 2013 annual Fall Leader’s Forum will be held September 28th in Gunnison, Colorado. What a beautiful time of year to travel to Gunnison! Cost and workshop information will be announced in future newsletters.

State Fair Exhibit Entry Consumer Science and General Projects qualifying for State Fair must be checked in to Devin and Carol at the State Fairgrounds on August 14. Exhibits must be picked up September 3 between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. If you cannot personally drop off or pick up your exhibit, check to see if someone in your family or 4-H Club can do it for you. To qualify for State Fair, the exhibit must be the first blue in each unit. (The Self-Determined project is our only county project and does not qualify for State Fair.) If you are the first blue, your project will be marked “State Fair Exhibit” with a ribbon. They will be honored at a banquet during the State 4-H Conference at Colorado State University in Fort Collins in June.

Colorado State 4-H Foundation State 4-H Conference Scholarship Winners Two members from Pueblo County, Michael McDermott and Nick Johnston, were awarded scholarships from the Colorado State 4-H Foundation to attend the Colorado State 4-H Conference at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. The cost of this conference is about $300.00. The conference will be held June 18-21, 2013. Participants get to stay in the college dorms, participate in workshops, engage in leadership opportunities and enjoy banquets, dances and other fun activities. Eight other youth from Pueblo County will be joining Michael and Nick at the Conference.

This event will be held Saturday, June 15 starting at 9:00 AM at the Camp Tobin Dorms on the fairgrounds. They will be painting the inside of both dorms (girls and boys). Please bring paint brushes, rolling pans, rollers. The paint is provided. Wear old clothes and help us spruce up the inside of the dorms. Lunch will be provided. Contact Devin or Carol in the Extension Office by June 6th or contact Connie Cecil directly by June 7th if you plan to come: connie.cecil@colostate.edu

State Fair Renovation The Colorado State Fair is in the process of renovating the dorms at Camp Tobin. The long range plan is to build new dorms and a multifunction meeting space on the site of the old dorms. A fund-raising committee is in place to accomplish this goal. In the short term, the Colorado State Fair plans to renovate the dorms to provide a better living environment until the ultimate construction plan can be implemented. In order to keep renovation costs to a minimum, the 4-H and FFA communities are being asked to contribute materials and supplies to the renovation effort. A list of materials and supplies needed is available in the Extension Office. The list includes framing, sheetrocking, flooring, plumbing, electrical and HVAC supplies along with doors, hardware, lighting and other items. If you are aware of anyone who might be able to donate any of these materials it would be greatly appreciated. Please let Devin in the Extension Office know if you are interested in helping and she will provide you with a more specific list. Thanks in advance!

Community Open Class Competition at the Pueblo County Fair Monday, July 8, 2013 Any Pueblo County resident can compete at the County Fair in Community Open Class. No entry fee or pre-entry required. Exhibit check-in 10 a.m.—Noon, July 8, at the Southwest Motors Events Center at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Exhibit judging—1:30—3:00 p.m., July 8, and judging is open to the public. Exhibit release—11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14 New projects, great prizes! Check our website for details: http://pueblo.colostate.edu

Community Service Opportunity The Mason Family has volunteered to plant vegetables on their land out on the Mesa. They did this last year and donated all of the veggies to Cooperative Care. They are very willing to plant again, water, and weed. THE THING THEY NEED FROM YOU AND YOUR CLUB is to come pick the veggies when they are ready in the fall. This would be a great community service project for all the youth in Pueblo County. If you could ask your club members to commit to one of two nights of picking in the fall, that would be great. Our only problem is the Mason’s will need to be planting SOON and they need to know if your club members would be willing to do this. He will plant according to how many can help at the end of the season. Please let us know by May 10th. Please email Carol if your club is willing to take this on as a “County Community Service Project”.

PUEBLO COUNTY FAIR INFORMATION Online Fair Book

Personal Safety

The Fair Book is the place to get all of your County Fair information—it has the schedule, rules and expectations for every event during County Fair! This year the Fair Book is completely electronic and has been posted on our website at: http://pueblo.colostate.edu/4hy/4hy.shtml

As we approach fair season, please remember there are a lot of people on the fairgrounds during our County Fair. At our recent dog show, a vehicle was broken into and a wallet was stolen, so please consider doing the following:  Always lock your vehicle.  Don’t leave valuables such as purses, wallets, etc. in your vehicle, even if it’s locked.  Don’t leave valuables unattended in your stalling area.  Obey traffic rules and regulations. Watch for children!  Be careful and have a great Pueblo County Fair!

A couple of suggestions—Download the fair book onto your smartphone, tablet or computer so that you always have a copy handy. Print out only the sections or pages you really need.

Youth who level up will receive a letter or certificate from Extension office and name mentioned in the next newsletter. 2. Welcome Co-Superintendents Jake Brunick and Leona Mayo who are Ranch Horse Co-Superintendents. Debbie Vargas is Greenhorse and Foal Superintendent. Other superintendents are Amy Decker, Western & English, and Theresa Martinez, Gymkhana. 3. Junior leaders who want to help at shows must let Carol know. 4. If a youth DOES NOT sign in at Horse Council Meetings; this constitutes not being there. 5. After winning Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion at County Fair, as youth should BE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to move to the next level in that particular division.

Safety Protective Headgear Policy: A certified equestrian helmet with SAFETY HARNESS SECURELY FASTENED WILL BE REQUIRED FOR: 1. Gymkhana – All mounted riders on the grounds must wear a safety helmet and must be fastened securely regardless of whether you are entered in gymkhana classes or not. 2. English Over Fence Classes – All riders must wear a safety helmet and must be fastened securely. 3. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the 4-H member to see that the headgear worn complies with such standards and is in good condition. Helmets are highly recommended for youth in all events while on or off the horse. This decision will be left to the parent/guardian’s discretion in classes where helmets are not required. 4. Non compliance with these rules could result in disqualification from classes. 5. Anyone working with cattle must be a level 2 or above rider

Clarification on Horse E-Records Youth MUST receive a minimum of 70% on their 2013 horse e-Records to be eligible to enroll in the horse project in 2014. If the youth doesn’t show the project at the 2013 county fair, and did not drop the project by the add/drop date of March 15 and intends to enroll in the project in 2014, the youth is still responsible for completing a record book to avoid a score of 0%.

Round Robin Judging for Horse Records in 2013 The 4-H Horse Record Books for 2012/2013 will be judged with a “round robin type judging” process. This is the same as last year. This is an opportunity for you to be an active part of the horse project in Pueblo County. If you would like to be part of this process, please contact Carol in the CSU Extension Office. This is a great way to learn what to look for and how to correctly fill out the horse e-records. Grading dates are planned for September 19th and 26th.

Gymkhana 1. Regular Gymkhana classes will be opened up to Level 1 Riders. There will be three classes available to these Level 1 Riders: Barrels, Poles, 75 Up and Back 2. Safety will be a factor in adding these classes. 3. No matter what level a youth is, they may be asked to drop classes if show management deems the horse or the participant is deemed to be unsafe.

NEW FOR SUMMER SHOW 2013 Pueblo County 4-H Horse Musical Freestyle Class This class is a demonstration of a rider’s abilities with their horse(s). Each entry will enter the arena individually and perform a routine they have created to music of their choice. Each entry should choose maneuvers they and their horses do well. While the term ‘rider’ is used to describe the contestant, a horse may be shown under saddle, in hand, in harness or at liberty, however the contestant is still expected to demonstrate at least 10 different maneuvers. Musical Freestyle combines the elegance and beauty as well as the power and strength of the horse with the stirring impact of music. Movements and figures are choreographed to music to create an artistic expression of horse and rider that highlights the horse/rider combination.. Choice of music, and the way it is edited together, is just as important as the technical aspects of the freestyle. The music can be anything from classical to show tunes. The actual routine you develop should show your horse off to best advantage. It should make the most of your horse's best gaits and movements and be appropriate for the level you're showing at. Rules and a pre entry will be sent to all members enrolled in the horse project. Contact Laney Sheppard with any questions.
