Message from The Chairman

Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. Chairman, Board of Directors

We would like to thank Textron Charitable Trust for 22 years of continuous support of PPAC’s ARTS Scholarships. This year, 47 promising young artists were awarded scholarships. To date, 787 Rhode Island students gained access to summer opportunities to pursue their artistic dreams.

The Arts Showcase brings elementary and middle school students to PPAC to attend live performances of dance, music or theatre during regular school hours at no cost, including transportation. This creates a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom.

Next Stop Broadway® is a week-long musical theatre intensive where students ages 10–17 learn from a team of Broadway professionals how to create magic on the PPAC stage. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue their interest and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the world of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members and learn about touring theatricals.

New this upcoming season is the Ocean State Star Awards celebrating the achievements of students, teachers and designers involved in high school musical theatre programs. To participate, schools register to have their production reviewed by a qualified team of adjudicators. During the spring of each review period, PPAC will host an award showcase to recognize the outstanding achievements of high school musical theatre productions and students that is modeled after the Tony Awards®. The Ocean State Star Awards becomes a feeder program to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as The Jimmy Awards®, in New York City. Disney Musicals in Schools successfully completed its first season with students performing at a Student Share Celebration on PPAC’s stage in June. PPAC, with the support of Disney, selected underresourced elementary schools in Providence and Pawtucket to help them build sustainable theatre programs. Experience PPAC is a statewide initiative that creates the opportunity for every 10th grade student in Rhode Island to see a select touring Broadway performance at no cost, including transportation to and from the Theatre.

PPAC hosted Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows through our Seats for Service Members program and our Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program hosted “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island.

PPAC’s Community Outreach Initiative brings the joy of theatre to people of all ages in Rhode Island. Please visit ppacri.org for more information about PPAC and ways you can help support our Community Outreach efforts. Your attendance and support are vital to PPAC and our community. I look forward to sharing with you another outstanding season at PPAC!

Welcome to the PerformingProvidence Arts 2022/23Center's season! With the support of you, our loyal patrons, along with donors, underwriters and sponsors, PPAC presents a variety of Community Outreach and Engagement initiatives to provide free or low-cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre.

PPAC and House Organist Peter Edwin Krasinski produced a number of virtual Wurlitzer Concerts over the past two years which can be viewed anytime at ppacri.org/wurlitzer In partnership with The Autism Project and the Theatre Development Fund, PPAC’s SensoryFriendly Performances create a theatre experience that is welcoming, judgment free and inclusive of guests with a wide range of sensory, learning and physical differences. These performances are perfect for young children and guests who might benefit from a more relaxed theatrical environment.

Whether it is preparing the historic theatre for an opening night production that will bring a sold-out house to its feet, or making the right decision with your business or investment strategies, performance is everything. To achieve and maintain peak performance — in business, in the arts . . . in life — requires dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. The members of PPAC exemplify those qualities, and that makes our partnership a natural fit.

PPAC Management reserves the right to change the security policy or implement any security measures required for any performance without prior notice. For everyone’s safety, all guests must walk through metal detectors and have their bags searched. Bags that pass inspection must fit comfortably under a theatre seat.

The Providence Performing Arts Center dedicates 100% of its proceeds from the Annual Fund Campaign towards our Community Outreach and Engagement Initiative. This allows PPAC to create, produce and present programs and activities that make the Theatre accessible to a wider range of people, especially young audiences and artists. Our free or low-cost tickets to these events are often the only opportunity many people will have to experience the joy of theatre. It is only with the help of our donors that we are able to offer these theatre experiences to the entire community:

Each year, the Providence Performing Arts Center is faced with the challenge of raising enough funds to offset the cost of producing and presenting the valuable programs we offer as part of our Community Outreach Initiative. The Annual Fund is the vehicle that makes that possible. Annual Fund proceeds also help fund the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social and professional diversity.

MEMORIAL GIFTS

In 1977, the Loew’s Theatre Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank and Textron, Inc. The venue became a private nonprofit corporation and was called the Ocean State Performing Arts Center. In 1982, the Ocean State Performing Arts Center changed its name to the Providence Performing Arts Center, as a way of honoring the City’s commitment to saving the venue. That same year, our first House Organist Lincoln W.N. Pratt assisted the PPAC staff with finding the “Mighty Wurlitzer.” The 5/21 Wurlitzer Organ was built in 1927; it is one of only three five-manual keyboard consoles built by Wurlitzer. Mr. Pratt served as our House Organist until his passing in 1998. World-renowned organist and silent film accompanist Peter Edwin Krasinski became our second House Organist in September

52 For more than 45 years, the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) has been the Rhode Island home of top-notch national Broadway tours and some of the biggest names in comedy, culture and music.

The 2022/2023 season opener TINA –THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL will be the twenty-first national tour to open at PPAC since 2008. The distinction of being the theatre of choice for twenty-one national tour openings has helped make this venue a nationally recognized and well-respected cultural institution located in the heart of Providence. In the summer of 2022, Pollstar named PPAC as one of the top ten theatres in the U.S. The Loew’s Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928 as a premiere movie palace. Designed by the architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, it has always astounded visitors with its grandeur. For over nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished, while undergoing various name changes, storm damage and ongoing architectural restoration. The Loew’s Theatre Building enjoyed several successful decades after opening; however, the venue experienced financial hardships due to declining attendance starting in the early 1950s. The Theatre also suffered damage from the New England Hurricane of 1938 and then Hurricane Carol in 1954. Over the next two decades, the venue continued to struggle financially and to fall into greater disrepair. In 1976, the building’s then owner, B.A. Dario, considered demolishing the historic theatre. Shortly thereafter, local community figures including then Governor J. Joseph Garrahy, then Chairman of PPAC’s Board of Trustees Bruce Sundlun (Governor of Rhode Island, 1991–1995), then Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr. and Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario discussed transforming the Theatre into a center for the arts to preserve the theatre and revitalize downtown Providence.

As2020.the Providence Performing Arts Center, the Theatre has evolved and thrived through the efforts of past and current board members and administrative staff, making it one of the most successful nonprofit theatres in the United States.

Theatre History

MillardNickPhoto:

Restorations to the Loew’s Theatre Building have been made over the seasons to insure that the Theatre will be enjoyed for years to come. Significant projects include a fullscale stage house expansion in 1995 and an historically accurate restoration of the Grand Lobby, Arcade and House. The carpet and wall fabric, faithful to their original designs, have been replaced. In April 2022, the ticket kiosk, which served as the Theatre’s original box office, was restored; the project included removing cracked granite stone panels and replacing them with new black stone panels. During the winter of 2020/2021, new, custom terra cotta tiles were installed and exterior lighting was added to the Theatre’s Weybosset Street façade. The meticulous façade restoration and installation was performed by Consigli Construction, with beautiful lighting designed by Evelyn Audet Lighting Design, LLC. Preserve RI and the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) honored PPAC in 2021 with a Rhody Award for this Historic Preservation Project.

The Reignite Professional Development Series is a free resource for Rhode Island educators to continue their certification towards their professional learning units. This series was funded by Disney and serves teachers who serve students in the performing or technical theatre arts. It can also be used by teachers who may be tasked with putting on a production in their school. The series is geared towards schools with little to no resources. It was developed to serve our Disney Musicals in Schools elementary teachers but is appropriate for any grade level teacher.
