Ahhh Summer!

ISD719

Us!

CommE

We have been waiting and waiting for the snow to melt, and the temperatures to increase. Everyone I know is ready for the change that the summer tends to bring to Minnesotans...more energy, more time, more motivation! With the kids finishing up their final weeks of school for the year, most can’t wait for the break. A chance to sleep in, play with friends, and just be kids. But, inevitably, we adults know that the joy surrounding all this free time for the kids in our lives can be short lived. The complaints like “I’m bored!”, “There is nothing to do around here!” and “So and So gets to do fun things over the summer!” often sneak up on us a lot sooner than we expect! So, this year, be prepared! Give your children “something to talk about” throughout the summer or when they return to school in the fall. Give yourself a break from hearing “I’m so bored”! This summer our Community Education programming is sure to offer something for everyone. Start Making Memories, Carrie Dobie Youth Programs Coordinator

Hip Hop & Breakdancing Boys Only (1st-5th Grade)

Stagehands Presents: Seussical, Jr. (Ages 8-17)

In this all boys class you’ll learn cool hip hop steps to today’s most popular music. You will get down on the ground and explore the world of break dancing! Time will also be spent learning to slide, pop, move, and groove! No dance experience necessary! Please bring a water bottle to each class and wear pants or bring knee pads.

A delight for children to perform, Seussical is now one of the most-performed shows in America! In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” captures the show’s spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes “his kind and his powerful heart.” Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry. In this intensive production, you will enjoy the opportunity to learn while being part of a real theatrical experience. Each session will be action-packed to develop your dance, vocal, and acting techniques. Games and other activities have been developed to help enhance the experience and make it one to remember for years. Dance shoes are recommended but not required. Additional fees are charged for performances ($6 adult & $5 child), but two free tickets will be provided to each student. This program will meet at HOMS in the cafeteria on July 6-July 8. All other dates are scheduled to meet at TOMS in the auditorium.

Don’t Forget the E!

COMMUNITY CONTACTS

You may have noticed that our catalogs and calendars often reference courses and events for students “E-12.” You may wonder what the “E” stands for. Shouldn’t it be “K-12?” Actually the “E” is much needed because it stands for “Early Childhood” and represents our district’s youngest learners.

City of Prior Lake 952-447-9800 www.cityofpriorlake.com

Early childhood encompasses birth to age 5 but there is a lot to the “E” designation besides representing age groups. E-12 is really about embracing a model that places importance on Dr. Sue Ann Gruver preparing children for success in school by providing enriching Superintendent programs and engaging all parents in the learning process.

City of Savage Parks and Recreation Dept 952-224-3420

A large portion of Edgewood School is dedicated to early childhood programs including Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and Circle of Friends Preschool, both a component of the district’s Community Education Services. Edgewood also houses the Half-Day Kindergarten program, Early Childhood Special Education (Birth-5) and Early Childhood Screening with developmental screenings starting at age 3 years, 4 months. So why do we place such high importance on ECFE here in Minnesota? Some studies point to research that shows preschool programs can help to close the achievement gap. A recent study conducted by the University of Minnesota and Chicago Public Schools shows that preschool is cost-effective too. The cost-benefit analysis showed that for every $1 invested in a school-based early education program, $11 is returned to society over the children’s lifetimes. That’s the equivalent of an 18 percent annual return on investment. While those financial statistics are interesting, here in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools our mission is simpler: focus on literacy and school readiness, build relationships with parents and support and strengthen families. Three times a year catalogs are mailed to families and are filled with early childhood programs, events, family activities and parenting seminars. You can learn more about classes for new or expecting parents, preschool screening and classes offered by our talented group of parent educators. All classes and events are designed for families in ways that are relevant, helpful and fun. Grandparents and caregivers are also welcomed to attend ECFE classes. Our catalogs and website also have information about enrollment in Circle of Friends Preschool. Call 952-226-0950 for registration information. There are still openings for this fall. In Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools, our mission is to educate all learners birth through adults. So the next time you are thinking about the schools in our community; don’t forget the “E.”

Date:__________ Class Safety and Behavior Procedures - Help us ensure the safety of your child!

• Provide an accessible daytime phone number and an additional emergency contact when registering your child for programs. • If someone other than a parent will be picking up your child from class, please let the instructor and/or a Community Education staff person know ahead of time. • Drop off your child in the classroom on time each session. • Pick up your child in the classroom at the class ending time. If you can not pick up on time, you are expected to make other arrangements for your child ahead of time. • Inform the instructor AND a Community Education staff person of any allergies, special needs, or behavioral concerns that may help us to provide the best environment and instruction for your child and the other students enrolled. • The behavior of students is expected to be appropriate for the class learning environment. The instructor and Community Education staff reserve the right to dismiss students immediately, without a refund, when behavior is not appropriate or jeopardizes the safety of them or other students. Should this become necessary, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up children immediately.

Here's what we've heard about our classes. What will be your family's story? These Community Ed classes are great! The commitment is short, the classes are fun for the kids, it provides an opportunity to meet new friends, and the price is affordable. These classes are great for getting kids out of the house and exercising! -Heather Mickus- Parent What I liked best about this class was that there weren’t alot of kids in it, there were only 6 students in the class, but my favorite part of the class was that we did bouts and we had a class tournament. -Chris (Fencing Student)

Very impressed and very happy mommy! Thanks again. -Angela Haugen (Stagehands Productions Parent) My daughter was thrilled with the instructor. She thought he was so funny, and she loved the class. She’s really sad that today was the last day! We’ll likely sign up for another class, especially if it’s the same instructor. -Jen Laurienzo-Parent (Kidcreate Studio Art Class)
