When I think back to summer breaks when I was a kid, I think about the excitement I felt! I remember biking around the neighborhood with the other kids and how we all would race home the minute we heard the bells of the ice cream truck. I remember practically becoming a fish I spent so much time at the pool, and I remember the creative games my brother and I used to come up with to fill our days. I also remember getting the catalog of elective “Summer School” classes that I’d pick through each spring, always hurrying to sign up so my top choices wouldn’t be full before I got registered! I’m sure there were others, but I specifically remember the swimming lessons, bugs class, sewing class, and a Math is Fun class. I won’t admit how long ago it was that I took these classes, but I am amazed at how I can remember them. When I selected classes for this Community Education Summer Youth Programs Catalog, I was hoping that I was setting the stage for moments to be created that will be fondly remembered by today’s youth for years to come. From a developmental standpoint it is important to find a balance between exposing children to different structured learning environments and allowing for imaginative free play. Many of the classes in this catalog allow opportunities for both. I hope that your children will grow up with memories of happy summer days like the ones I had, and that some of those memories include this summer’s ISD 719 Community Education programs. Imagine & Design The Messiest Art Camp Ever! (Ages 4-9) Do you love to get messy? In The Messiest Art Camp Ever, you’ll paint with plaster, sculpt with gooey gunk, make paper mache dragonflies and fling paint like Jackson Pollock. You will even learn some art terms along the way. Total Clay Camp (Ages 6+) Get ready for an awesome exposure to the CLAY WORLD! You will be making five projects out of clay, using new cool tools to create great designs! You will make a stoneware pot on the potters wheel, create and glaze a ceramic tile, learn basic hand building skills, make a wall hanging and another food safe hand built project. You will experiment with polymer clay and learn ways to use it. The instructor brings two potters wheels and she will be right between two students at a time – literally her hands on top of yours to make a pot on the wheel. Parents – please feel free to register and make these projects as well! Dress for a mess! This is truly for the young and young at heart. Projects will be fired and glazed at the instructor’s studio and returned to Community Education within four weeks. Summer 2012 - Imagine & Design Project Runway with Youth Enrichment League (Ages 8-12) •New•

Get ready for your very own PROJECT RUNWAY FASHION SHOW exhibiting projects, designs and crafts made with your own hands, style and flair! You will make and take home multiple projects, including an apron, satchel, doll clothes and more. You will also learn sewing basics like cross-stitching, straightstitching, using a sewing machine and sewing by hand. After this camp your sewing skills will include sewing buttons, patching tears and following basic designs. Sewing machines are provided for class and are designed for young-learners with built in safety mechanisms. The FASHION SHOW will take place the last 30 minutes of the final day of camp. Kids’ Company The Kids’ Company summer program offers youth 4 years old to incoming 8th graders an opportunity to hang out with friends while participating in a wide variety of fun activities. Each day is packed full of activities centered around language, science, art, music, math and social studies. Kids’ Company focuses on environmental projects. Our pre kindergartners work on socialization and independence, while we inspire our middle school youth by fostering mentoring and leadership skills. Our younger children will enjoy at least one field trip a week while our 6th – 8th grade group will enjoy field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The 6th – 8th grade group will be given more flexibility and will be able to select their specific dates of attendance for the entire summer. Transportation to summer swim lessons may be provided. Chess is fun, Schoolhouse Chess camp is super fun! Schoolhouse Chess brings the game of chess to life using creative personalities. Safe at Home on My Own (Ages 8-11) If you (or your parents!) are feeling nervous about you being home alone for a little while this summer, this class is the solution to helping you feel more prepared. Safe at Home will answer your questions about setting up your routine to be by yourself when your parents are not home. Class will cover common household emergencies, using the telephone, basic first-aid, and more. Course fee includes student workbook. This class is intended as a tool to help families prepare youth for staying home alone. Summer 2012 - Learn Summer Math By Mail (Ages 5-12)

Sign It! (Ages 8-11)

Summer Math by Mail has helped thousands of students keep their math skills sharp over the summer. First and second graders, you will receive 10 weeks of lessons specifically designed for primary concept learners. Lessons covered throughout the summer for grades 3-7 will review and support concepts you have explored during the previous school year. You’ll take a pre-test and fill out a questionnaire to individualize your program, and then you will receive nine weeks of materials. Each week’s packet will include five, 20- minute math lessons with problem-solving activities. The activities will apply to a specific math concept or strand. For both groups, after you mail these in they will be returned to you with comments and corrections. You can work at your own pace. You’ll love receiving your returned assignments each week in the mail! When all lessons are completed, you will receive a certificate of achievement and a restaurant meal coupon. American Sign Language (ASL) is a great way to communicate with people that are deaf or hard of hearing, and it can be used for communication with hearing people as well! In Sign It! camp, you will learn the ASL alphabet to get you started with finger spelling words, the signs for words you may use a lot in simple conversations, and more. You will also use sign language to create visual arts and a short play production.

Laker Dance Team Youth Clinic (Ages 5-14)

You are invited to attend a three-day camp put on by the Laker Dance Team! After being divided into groups by grade, dancers will learn a variety of skills from current Laker dancers, play games, and learn a short routine. Wear comfortable clothing, lightweight tennis shoes or dance shoes, and bring a water bottle and snack. Fee includes a t-shirt. Please indicate t-shirt size when registering (Youth Small-Adult Medium). Registrations received after Friday, August 3rd cannot be guaranteed a t-shirt. After attending this clinic, participants will be invited to perform at the Blue & Gold PLHS football game on Wednesday, August 22nd, time to be announced. Parents are invited to this game to see the performance. Camp proceeds benefit the PLHS Dance Team.

Be part of children’s musical production that will have everyone singing and dancing in the aisles. As stated on www. mtishows.com, “The upbeat plot and flamboyant characters have made Annie one of the most beloved musicals in history--what girl hasn’t dreamed of performing the title role or playing the outrageous Miss Hannigan?” “The bright, tuneful score is easy to sing and filled with familiar numbers.” This theater camp focuses on the entire experience of being involved in a musical production. You will be taught acting techniques, choreography, and how to grow as a vocal artist. Students of all abilities are welcome. Each session will be action-packed to develop your dance, vocal, and acting techniques. Games and other activities have been developed to help enhance the experience and make it one to remember for years. Dance shoes are recommended but not required. The Bullies at Sam’s Café (Ages 6-12)

The Bullies at Sam’s Café, by Stuart Ardern, is a short one-act play for children with songs. In the story, a bully with a gang disturbs the staff and customers at Sam’s Café, but when the bullies get into trouble, should Sam and his friends help them? Be part of the cast that brings this story to life. Spend the week rehearsing the play with a director and a musical director. A portion of each day is also spent working on an acting monologue which each child will perform along with the play on the last day of class. Families and friends are invited to attend this performance during the final 30 minutes of camp on Friday. Please pack a lunch and water bottle each day.

Summer 2012 - Perform Summer Theater Workshop (Ages 9-15)

Little Kicksters Jazz and Kick Dance Class (Ages 6-12)

Be part of the drama workshop run by the Prior Lake High School Drama Department! High school actors and technicians, along with theater directors, will be in charge of this event. Each session will be divided into two sections. The first part will consist of theater games and activities. These are designed to help you learn stage movement, find characters, and have fun in the process. The second part will be to launch a play which will be performed for the public on the final day of the class. Casting will be on Monday and rehearsals will take place during the second part of each day’s session. The name of the plays will be announced at the beginning of the workshop. Production Town: Developing a Play from Script to Curtain Call (Ages 10-18) •New•

Watching a live play performance should be effortless and entertaining, but getting to that point is anything but! While scripts and casting are important pieces to a production’s success, there is a great deal of work happening before and during a play, all designed to transport the audience to another place. In Production Town, you’ll explore all aspects of playwriting and production. Using the Plays to Go curriculum, Prior Lake Players members will guide you through the process of creating a one-act play. Classes throughout the first week will walk you through three scripts that your group will have the opportunity to make your own and bring to life. From there, you will develop a production company to write, produce, and perform a small one-act play that shows your unique point of view. Mountain Biking •New• (Ages 9-13) Hit the trails this summer with confidence! This program will include plenty of trips through the mountain biking trails at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve as well as breaks in the action to learn the skills needed to bike other trails confidently; including basic bicycle mechanics, safety, and trail etiquette. You will be broken into groups based on ability level so all riders will be challenged without becoming frustrated. Helmets and mountain bikes are required to participate. If you need to rent a bike, they are available through Michael’s Cycles at a reduced rate of $40. A snack each day and a Michael’s Cycles water bottle will be supplied for each rider. Explore. Discover. Learn. Camp Eco-Adventure is one of the biggest summer camps offered each year. These programs were designed to locally educate youth to appreciate the environment around them and to become future stewards of our beautiful and vital natural resources. Each year, camp is changed to offer a unique opportunity to returning campers. Camp this June will focus on a favorite component of several previous camps, fishing! The August camp will be a new interpretation of past camps. Summer 2012 - Teens & PreTeens Mountain Biking (Ages 9-13)

Hit the trails this summer with confidence! This program will include plenty of trips through the mountain biking trails at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve as well as breaks in the action to learn the skills needed to bike other trails confidently; including basic bicycle mechanics, safety, and trail etiquette. You will be broken into groups based on ability level so all riders will be challenged without becoming frustrated. Helmets and mountain bikes are required to participate. If you need to rent a bike, they are available through Michael’s Cycles at a reduced rate of $40. A snack each day and a Michael’s Cycles water bottle will be supplied for each rider. In the event of severe weather or trail closure, you will be notified and class will be rescheduled. Please dress appropriately for the weather and with safe riding in mind. Water Polo Clinic •New• (Ages 10-16) The fast paced game of water polo combines aspects of swimming, basketball, hockey, and soccer into one game that is played in a pool. This clinic teaches the basics of water polo; including egg beatering, swimming with the ball, catching and throwing with one hand, a variety of very popular shots, and the basic rules of the game. If you are interested in playing goalie, you will also be taught the difference between a lunge and a jump, along with general goalie rules. This game is both challenging and exciting. You must be able to swim the length of a 25 yard pool and comfortably tread water for four 5 minute periods. Wear a one piece swim suit and bring a towel and water bottle. Summer Theatre Workshop (Ages 9-13) Be part of the drama workshop run by the Prior Lake High School Drama Department! High school actors and technicians, along with theater directors, will be in charge of this event. Each session will be divided into two sections. The first part will consist of theater games and activities. These are designed to help you learn stage movement, find characters, and have fun in the process. The second part will be to launch a play which will be performed for the public on the final day of the class. Casting will be on Monday and rehearsals will take place during the second part of each day’s session. The name of the plays will be announced at the beginning of the workshop. If you prefer not to be “on stage,” an opportunity will exist for you to work with the technical aspects of the performance. Production Town: •New• Developing a Play from Script to Curtain Call (Ages 10-18) Watching a live play performance should be effortless and entertaining, but getting to that point is anything but! While scripts and casting are important pieces to a production’s success, there is a great deal of work happening before and during a play, all designed to transport the audience to another place. In Production Town, you’ll explore all aspects of playwriting and production. Using the Plays to Go curriculum, Prior Lake Players members will guide you through the process of creating a one-act play. Classes throughout the first week will walk you through three scripts that your group will have the opportunity to make your own and bring to life. From there, you will develop a production company to write, produce, and perform a small one-act play that shows your unique point of view. From the Superintendent Are you planning on enrolling your child into Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools? Summer is a great time to register your student and we’ve made it easy for parents with one-stop enrollment at the District Services Center in Prior Lake or online at www.priorlakesavage.k12.mn.us. By going to www.priorlakesavage.k12.mn.us, parents can click on “Enroll in Our Schools” under the Quick Guide. From there, Dr. Sue Ann Gruver parents can watch a short video about our E-12 education and Superintendent get all of the forms needed to enroll their student in school, with step-by-step instructions, all in one convenient location. Forms can be submitted electronically or dropped off at the District Services Center in Prior Lake: 4540 Tower Street SE. Information about our programs and services such as curriculum, special education, gifted and talented, school-age care through Kids’ Company and more can also be found on the Enroll in Our Schools web page. Another helpful feature is the School Finder. From our website parents can click on the School Finder link and type in their home address. The neighborhood school will be listed along with a map, school website link and transportation information. While these customer service features have been designed with convenience in mind, face-to-face interaction remains very important. Summer Safety For Your Child’s Safety In most cases, Community Education provides a Building Monitor or other staff person to be on site when we are offering programs at ISD 719 facilities. These individuals supervise a building or general area, and any Community Education events occurring at that time. Building Monitors are CPR and First Aid Certified and are also available to assist instructors, participants, and families with sign in and sign out before and after class, as well as a variety of other needs. Please feel free to contact the Community Education office or the Building Monitor if you have any questions about summer programming. Help Us Ensure the Safety of Your Child. Please Follow these Class Safety and Behavior Procedures:

• Provide an accessible daytime phone number and an additional emergency contact when registering your child for programs.

• Drop off your child in the classroom on time each session.

• Pick up your child in the classroom at the class ending time. If you cannot pick up on time, you are expected to make other arrangements for your child ahead of time.

• If someone other than a parent will be picking up your child from class, please let the instructor and/or a Community Education staff person know ahead of time.

• If it is okay for your child (age 10 or over) to walk or bike home following class, please indicate that on the registration form. Please note that children under 10 must be picked up in the classroom or class meeting space immediately following class. Youth will not be allowed to walk or bike home in the dark.

• Inform the instructor AND a Community Education staff person of any allergies, special needs, or behavioral concerns that may help us to provide the best environment and instruction for your child and the other students enrolled. • The behavior of students is expected to be appropriate for the class learning environment. The instructor and Community Education staff reserve the right to dismiss students immediately, without a refund, when behavior is not appropriate or jeopardizes the safety of them or other students. Should this become necessary, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up children immediately.

Guidelines & Procedures Satisfaction Guarantee - Please call Community Education (CE) Office at 952.226.0080 if you are not satisfied with any class or activity in which you participated. Refunds - Your money will be refunded if your class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or if the class is filled before we receive your registration. If you choose to cancel your class registration, to be eligible for a full refund we need to receive your request no later than 4pm, five business days prior to the first day of class. You must call or visit the CE Office to request a cancellation. Cancellations cannot be processed online by a consumer. Refunds are not issued after that time due to commitments made to instructors. Cancellations received after five business days will be subject to no refund. A $10 processing fee will be deducted from any refund. Cancellation - Community Education reserves the right to withdraw a course due to lack of enrollment or loss of a suitable facility. If we have to cancel a class, every effort will be made to contact all the participants who preregistered. Please include on your registration form a phone number where you can be contacted during the day. Community Education assumes no responsibility for reaching registrants who do not provide an accessible daytime phone number. Whenever possible, messages will be left on voicemail/answering machines. If an email is provided at time of registration, notifications will also be sent to the address provided. Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible. If school closes during the day due to bad weather, Community Education will cancel all activities. Listen to WCCO 830 AM radio for official school closure notices. Call 952.226.0080 for evening or weekend cancellation information. Discounts - Sign up with a friend or sibling by mail, on the phone, or in person, and you’ll each get 10% off your total fee (maximum discount of $15). You must be taking the same classes and request the discount at the time of registration. This discount cannot be combined with any other coupon or offer. Not valid on ECFE or Driver’s Education classes or where otherwise noted. All UCare Minnesota members may take up to a $15 discount per class. Any coupons used will be accepted with registration form by mail or dropped off only. Non-Endorsement Policy - Prior Lake-Savage Community Education contracts with specialists in their fields who are interested in presenting classes in their areas of expertise to the community. Please list a daytime phone number so we can reach you if a class is cancelled. If there is a last minute change, signs are posted at each site with your class information, including class title, room number and time of classes. Privacy - The information requested on registration forms will be used to verify eligibility as well as determine staff, facility and equipment needs. You or your child’s registration information may be provided to school district staff, volunteers, instructors, the school district attorney, insurer and auditor. Your email information is for internal use only and will not be sold or solicited. Photographs or videos of classes in action may be taken and used for district publications and web pages. If you object to having your picture used, please notify the Community Education Office at 952.226.0080 each time you register. Community Use of Facilities - Need a place to meet? Community members and organizations are invited to apply to use district facilities and grounds for their meetings and activities. Community Education Services coordinates all community group or individual requests for facility usage after school, on evenings, weekends and during summer months. All requests must be made at least 7 business days before the intended activity. Liability insurance or a participant disclaimer form are now required for use of ISD 719 district facilities and grounds. Please visit our website for directions to all buildings. Tuition Assistance - Reduced fees, scholarships, and payment plans are available for families experiencing financial hardship. Assistance is limited to one program per person in each quarter with a limit of $100 per person/per quarter. Some programs are not eligible. You must be a resident of ISD 719 to qualify. Call 952.226.0080 to request assistance. Lost or Stolen Items - Community Education is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not bring valuables with you to class. Student Absences - To be eligible to participate in Community Education programs, classes, or events, students are expected to be in school all day. Students who are ill or miss for other reasons not considered excused absences (such as a doctor’s appointment), will not be allowed to participate in Community Education programs on that day.
