Get ready to learn, create and play! As you flip through the following pages, I hope that you and your children are having a difficult time narrowing down all the options that appeal to you! The classes are intended to represent a little bit of everything for young learners, ages 3-18. The classes chosen for the spring catalog feature lots of old favorites that I urge you try if you haven’t done so already! Wish Upon a Ballet, Extreme Legos, Piano Lessons, Driver’s Education...sign up early to secure your child’s space in these popular programs. We’ve also added new classes with an emphasis on creating opportunities for parents to learn and play with their children, recognizing that many of the families we serve spend fewer waking hours with their children than then they spend apart. Look for classes with the P/C symbol throughout this book for these types of programs, but be sure to check out The Language of Toys, A Walk in the Woods, Wigglecise, and How to Get Into College and Pay For It Without Going Broke. If you don’t see something that you were looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me at 952.226.0088 or cdobie@priorlake-savage.k12.mn.us. I’m always looking for new ways to engage the community in our programming by creating new programs and recruiting instructors that have something to share with others. Happy Reading, Carrie Dobie Youth Programs Coordinator

Autism: A Family’s p/c Message of Hope and Promise NEW (Adults & Children 5th Grade+) ISD 719 Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) and Community Education Services are very proud to invite Barb Kavan, ISD 719’s Special Education Coordinator and her son, Stefan, to speak on this disorder and their recently published book Trainman. Trainman was co-written with Barb’s son Stefan who has a form of ASD. Social acceptance and friendships are key components in quality of life and general human development. But for most children on the autism spectrum, being socially accepted does not come easy. This true story shows how the frequent disconnect between children with ASD and their nondisabled peers can be bridged by capitalizing on the child’s special interest, leading to acceptance, friendship and increased selfesteem. There will be a Q&A after the presentation and also time to purchase the book ($16.95) before and after the event. Students 5th grade and up are welcome to come at no extra cost with an adult. This presentation qualifies for 1.5 CEU’s. COMMUNITY CONTACTS

PLSAS and Community Education programs continue to excel!

City of Prior Lake 952-447-9800 www.cityofpriorlake.com

Did you know that in a recent district survey Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools ranked among the top ten in the Twin Cities in: - Providing a high-quality education - Meeting the learning needs of students - Leadership - Teaching and support staff - Communicating important issues and decisions

Dr. Sue Ann Gruver Superintendent

In that same survey, Community Education also received some of the highest rankings in the metro for its adult program offerings, level of community participation and overall customer satisfaction. We are grateful to receive such high marks from community members! If you haven’t yet taken a Community Education class or seen our schools, now is the time! We pride ourselves in offering relevant and exciting course options to learners of all ages. Our schools are always open to those who want to take a tour and learn more about our progressive curriculum, environmental education focus and the teaching methods used to meet the individual learning needs of all students. In the meantime, please stay in touch. You can now follow us on facebook. Also, school board meetings can now be viewed live on our website along with archived meetings. Cable channel 17 will continue to run school board meetings on Tuesdays and Saturdays as well. Thank you for your support of our Community Education programs and our schools. I hope you take the opportunity to sign up for a Community Education class. It’s just one of the many programs that help to make our community such a great place to live.

To ensure the safety of your child, please follow these simple steps: • Assume your child will attend the program if you have submitted a registration. Send a note to your child’s teacher for extra assurance. • Notify Community Education office in writing if you’d like to provide consent for your child to be picked up by another adult, ride their bike, or walk home. This must be submitted for each program. • Complete the entire registration form with every registration. • Pick children up on time in the program classroom. Students not picked up on time will be taken to that school’s Kids’ Company Program and you will be charged at the rate of $10 per hour. The entire rate will be collected for any portion of the hour. This service is offered for emergency situations only. Please make prior arrangements for care or pick up of your child whenever possible. Visit www.priorlakesavagece.com or call 952-226-0080
