The programs offered in this Fall 2012 Community Education Youth Programs Catalog are intended to take you to new places of discovery and hidden treasures as well. Each catalog is created with the goal of offering a new variety of classes. Programs you’ve seen listed before are brought back when they are meeting or exceeding parent, student, and Community Education staff expectations and continue to engage and challenge children or youth. Programs are constantly being reenergized with fresh materials and activities that we think will make them appealing to a large group of people. If you tried it once, don’t be afraid to try it again. FLIP Over Gymnastics (Ages 3-6) Did you watch the Olympics? This is an awesome time to try gymnastics. Boys and girls will FLIP over learning basic tumbling, along with working on low balance beams, incline mats, springboard and other gymnastics equipment while having an ultimate blast! “Bunny pictures” of skills and many “props” are used to enhance development and fun. Gymnastics is a confidence-building sport that improves strength, flexibility, agility, and coordination. It’s the best activity for developing skills for all other sports. Give your young artist an opportunity to explore the wonderful world of art. In this hands-on class, your child will enjoy learning about primary and secondary colors while getting messy with lots of ooey, gooey sensory play. Each class will involve a sensory encounter and an art project that is sure to lay the foundation for a lifelong love of art. All art materials used in this class are non-toxic. Mom & Baby Yoga (6wk-8mos & mom)

This class is specifically designed for new moms (6 weeks postpartum) and their babies (through crawlers, 8 months). The class is modeled after Lisa Bergley’s Yoga Bonding sequence and will give you the opportunity to connect with your new postpartum body and bond with your baby. During the class you will incorporate your new little one into many traditional yoga poses and learn infant massage techniques. The class also offers the chance to connect with other new moms. Wish Upon a Ballet (Ages 3-6) This dance program incorporates popular children’s stories and ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes and scarves you will create a complete fairy tale experience while skipping, leaping, jumping, and spinning. An introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner! Family and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of each section. Girls and boys will need ballet shoes. Girls should wear a leotard and tights. Boys should wear comfortable clothes. Infant Speciality Classes

Discover your baby’s developmental capacity and parenting strategies to enhance their growth.

Baby Sign Language (0-12 months)

Baby & Parent Yoga (0-12 months)

Infant Massage (0-12 months)

Why would a parent consider using sign language with their baby? • Bonding: Research has confirmed that signers enjoy a stronger parental bond. • Reduced Fussiness: A lot of fussiness is caused by a baby wanting something but not being able to communicate his need to you. Research has shown that signing babies are better able to get their needs met. • Development: Baby sign language is a good structured activity to help babies develop cognitively. Studies show that babies who have early exposure to signing, have larger speaking vocabularies earlier.

This introductory class will be taught by a certified baby yoga instructor. Yoga advocates say that yoga can help parents and infants bond, and promote development of motor skills. And just as yoga helps adults become more aware of their bodies, yoga can help parents become attuned to their babies wants and needs.

Massage can be a relaxing, bonding time for you and your little one. Studies have shown your nurturing touch also promotes physiological, neurological, and psychological development. To ensure safe practices, this class will be taught by a certified Infant Message instructor.

Holiday Art Making with Abrakadoodle

Do you like to create colorful and fun art? Do you like to paint and sculpt? If the answer is yes then this is the class for you! In Art-rageous art camp you will create your own “Wild Thing” inspired by the book Where the Wild Things Are, and sculpt gingerbread men and candy canes. You’ll paint and collage a whimsical pop art cat on canvas board and use metallic paints to create pussy willows. You’ll even try your hand at a new Drawsters drawing lesson.

Do you want to make some fun gifts for the holidays? Get a jump start on holiday gift making. In this fun class you will decoupage a flower vase, paint a colorful canvas and make holiday ornaments. These gifts are perfect for a grandparent or favorite relative or you may keep the projects for yourself. You’ll even make holiday wrapping paper or gift bags to wrap the gifts. Special Education Advisory Council Look for the in this catalog for programs that the Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) has selected as classes that may be appropriate to add paraprofessional support for students with special needs. These classes are open to all learners. We provide reasonable accommodations whenever possible to help students participate in all of our programs. Please contact Carrie at 952.226.0088 a minimum of 3 weeks prior to class start date to discuss reasonable accommodations. The Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) is a group that provides input on special education issues for our local school district, and advises the district on the development of programs & services to meet the special educational needs of children and families. We aim to inform, advise, educate, advocate and collaborate, in conjunction with increasing disability awareness and acceptance. SEAC is comprised of both special education parents and staff members. Meetings are held once a month for an hour and a half to discuss special education matters. Clay Treasures

(Kindergarten-5th Grade) A treasure chest made out of clay! You will receive 2lbs. of red and white earthenware clay and be shown how to make your own treasure chest. The adventure of what you create is up to you, but with some thought will result in a treasure you’ll have for years to come. You can add handles, use tools and make jewels out of clay or carve out or add any designs to decorate your own treasure chest. Parents – feel free to register and make a treasure chest of your own. This updated Babysitting Training class prepares you to safely and responsibly care for yourself and children or infants in the absence of a parent or guardian. This class will help you develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitter’s business (CD-rom included), keep yourself and others safe, help children behave, and learn basic child care and First Aid. If you (or your parents!) are feeling nervous about you being home alone for a little while, this class is the solution to helping you feel more prepared. Safe at Home will answer your questions about setting up your routine to be by yourself when your parents are not home. This class is intended as a tool to help families prepare youth for staying home alone. Safe At Home will not fully prepare all youth for the responsibilities involved with being at home alone.

Teens After School Driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education (Ages 14-18) A comprehensive Driver Education program is offered through Community Education, including 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of private behind-the-wheel training as is required by the state of Minnesota for drivers under the age of 18. Our course includes defensive driving techniques, hands-on, dynamic curriculum and experienced, certified instructors. You are welcome to take the 30 hours of classroom instruction at age 14 or older, however you do need to be 15 to take the knowledge test to receive a permit. Cancellation - Community Education reserves the right to withdraw a course due to lack of enrollment or loss of a suitable facility. If we have to cancel a class, every effort will be made to contact all the participants who preregistered. Please include on your registration form a phone number where you can be contacted during the day. Community Education assumes no responsibility for reaching registrants who do not provide an accessible daytime phone number. Whenever possible, messages will be left on voicemail/answering machines. If an email is provided at time of registration, notifications will also be sent to the address provided. Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather or for other unavoidable reasons. These sessions are made up whenever possible. If school closes during the day due to bad weather, Community Education will cancel all activities. Discounts - Sign up with a friend or sibling by mail, on the phone, or in person, and you’ll each get 10% off your total fee (maximum discount of $15). You must be taking the same classes and request the discount at the time of registration. This discount cannot be combined with any other coupon or offer. Not valid on ECFE or Driver’s Education classes or where otherwise noted. All UCare Minnesota members may take up to a $15 discount per class. Any coupons used will be accepted with registration form by mail or dropped off only. Non-Endorsement Policy - Prior Lake-Savage Community Education contracts with specialists in their fields who are interested in presenting classes in their areas of expertise to the community. Class Confirmations - Community Education does not mail class

confirmations. If you provide an email address at the time of registration, a confirmation will be emailed to you. If you do not hear from us, assume that you are in the class and that it will be held at the time and place indicated. We will contact you by phone or mail if there is a change. Please list a daytime phone number so we can reach you if a class is cancelled. If there is a last minute change, signs are posted at each site with your class information, including class title, room number and time of classes. Privacy - The information requested on registration forms will be used to verify eligibility as well as determine staff, facility and equipment needs. You or your child’s registration information may be provided to school district staff, volunteers, instructors, the school district attorney, insurer and auditor. Your email information is for internal use only and will not be sold or solicited. Photographs or videos of classes in action may be taken and used for district publications and web pages. If you object to having your picture used, please notify the Community Education Office at 952.226.0080 each time you register.

Community Use of Facilities - Need a place to meet? Community members and organizations are invited to apply to use district facilities and grounds for their meetings and activities. Community Education Services coordinates all community group or individual requests for facility usage after school, on evenings, weekends and during summer months. All requests must be made at least 7 business days before the intended activity. Tuition Assistance - Reduced fees, scholarships, and payment plans are available for families experiencing financial hardship. Assistance is limited to one program per person in each quarter with a limit of $100 per person/per quarter. Some programs are not eligible. You must be a resident of ISD 719 to qualify. Call 952.226.0080 to request assistance. Lost or Stolen Items - Community Education is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not bring valuables with you to class.

Student Absences - To be eligible to participate in Community

Education programs, classes, or events, students are expected to be in school all day. Students who are ill or miss for other reasons not considered excused absences (such as a doctor’s appointment), will not be allowed to participate in Community Education programs on that day.

• Provide an accessible daytime phone number and an additional emergency contact when registering your child for programs. • If someone other than a parent will be picking up your child from class, please let the instructor and/or a Community Education staff person know ahead of time. • Drop off your child in the classroom on time each session. • Elementary After School CE Participants will be dismissed from their elementary classroom to Kids’ Company (KC) Staff. Students will eat snack (provided by CE) with KC. CE class instructors will pick up registered class participants from Kids’ Company. • Pick up your child in the classroom at the class ending time. If you can not pick up on time, you are expected to make other arrangements for your child ahead of time. Late pickups are subject to a fee. • Inform the instructor AND a Community Education staff person of any allergies, special needs, or behavioral concerns that may help us to provide the best environment and instruction for your child and the other students enrolled. • The behavior of students is expected to be appropriate for the class learning environment. The instructor and Community Education staff reserve the right to dismiss students immediately, without a refund, when behavior is not appropriate or jeopardizes the safety of them or other students. Should this become necessary, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up children immediately.
