NetSmartz (Adults) Netsmartz is an Internet Safety Program to educate, engage and empower children and youth to prevent victimization and increase self confidence when online. As the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, many children are ill-equipped to protect themselves online. Approximately one out of seven young people who use the Internet regularly were exposed to unwanted sexual solicitation or approaches and one out of three encountered unwanted pornography. With that in mind, more needs to be done to educate the nation’s children about the risks they face online. This program is relevant and important to all parents and other adults who interact with youth that use computers. It’s a great compliment to the 7th grade DARE program as well. #2436 Thursday, Nov. 18 7:00-8:30pm TOMS Media Center 1 Session $10/person or $15/couple Instructor: Officer Maureen O’Hehir The NetSmartz Workshop is a program of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and was created in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. NetSmartz is a free, interactive, educational resource for children ages 5-17, parents, guardians, educators and law enforcement that uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet.

Minnesota K-12 Education Subtraction and Credit Minnesota offers education tax subtraction and credit for families whose children participate in after school enrichment programs. Some Community Education classes qualify for this program. Welcome Back to School

COMMUNITY CONTACTS City of Prior Lake 952-447-9800 www.cityofpriorlake.com

The impending start of school brings with it a myriad of emotions for students. Some are nervous about their first day. Other children are excited about the prospects a new year will bring. I can’t help but recall one Kindergarten student who, whether she fully realized it or not, had one specific goal in mind for what she wanted to accomplish in school. Her first day of school went very well. She met her teacher, made some new friends and became acquainted with the classroom. But at the end of the day there was utter disappointment.

City of Prior Lake Parks and Recreation Dept 952-447-9820 www.priorlakesavagece.com

Dr. Sue Ann Gruver Superintendent

On her way to the bus to go home the principal asked, “How was your first day of school?” The student replied, “I guess it was OK but after one whole day I still don’t know how to read.” Even at the tender age of 5, we start to form goals for ourselves and it continues throughout our lives. As parents, I know you too have a mix of emotions as we approach the first day of school but you also have goals you hope your child will achieve and expectations of your school district to help your child meet those goals, whether it’s in school or within a Community Education classroom. As a district we have been working hard over the summer to make sure all students return to a school district that is poised to meet their individual learning needs. One goal we fulfilled this summer was to conduct a survey to learn more about what parents want from their school district and how we can meet the needs of our community. The results will be posted to our website at the end of August. Throughout the school year we will continue to work to achieve our district goals as outlined in our strategic plan. Our strategic directions include the following: • increasing measurable student growth and achievement • continuing our financial accountability to the community • expanding specialized programming and technology to meet student needs • expanding our environmental focus across the district • integrating technology for teaching and communications • engaging stakeholders

As a district we are well on our way to achieving and even expanding on our goals. Students continue to score above state averages on state standardized tests, we have a positive fund balance even in these difficult financial times, our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology to help all students learn in new and exciting ways, we are the only district in the state to have an environmental education program that grows with the students from ECFE to high school, and we will continue to include stakeholders in all important decision making processes. Thank you for sharing your children with us. Our staff is ready to help students realize their full potential and achieve their goals. Welcome back!
