They will also learn how to apply for grants worth up to $250 to help offset the costs of plants, compost, mulch, edging and other materials. As noted below, one of the workshops will also cover native landscaping and funding assistance for shoreline restoration projects. Medicare is a complex issue that won’t be simplified anytime soon. We’ll discuss Parts A & B (Original Medicare), Part C (Medicare Advantage) and it’s differences with MedSupplement plans including premium outlays. Part D (prescription) plans also contributes to Medicare confusion. Find out which plan may be right for you. Or are you willing to pay an additional $1,500 annually just because you don’t understand the choices? If you will soon become eligible or have been a Medicare participant for some time, this program will provide you with information on enrollment, eligibility, coverage, cost and options. E

arly Childhood Screening - 952.226.0975

The early childhood years, from birth to the start of kindergarten, is an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is doing at age three to four. The screening process identifies, at an early age, possible health or learning concerns so children can get help before starting school. All children need to be screened before enrolling in kindergarten. If your child is of screening age and you’d like to schedule an appointment, or if you are conscientiously opposed to screening, please contact our office. Email: www.ecscreening@priorlake-savage.k12.mn.us

Do you or someone close to your child have concerns about their development?

No two children develop, grow or learn in the same way or do things at the same pace. However, they do develop in predictable ways. If you have or know a child between the ages of newborn to 5 years and think this child might need extra help to learn and grow, do not hesitate to request a free, confidential screening. Go to helpmegrowmn.org for more information, or call 952-226-0980 OR 1-866-693-4769.

Help Me Grow

While all young children grow and change at their own rate, some children experience delays in their development. Special health conditions may affect children’s development, too. Accessing early intervention services as early as possible will ensure the best developmental outcomes for these children. Minnesota’s early intervention system - Help Me Grow - includes two programs for eligible children. Infant and Toddler Intervention are special services and supports for children birth through age two and their families. Preschool Special Education is for children ages three to five years. Eligible children can receive services in their home, child care setting or school. Services are free to children regardless of income or immigrant status. Call 952-4965059 for more information.

The FOCUS is not on spending money but spending time with a child, building a trusting friendship. You can share a walk in the park, play games, hobbies, recreational activities, run errands, bake cookies or sit and talk. Please call 651-789-2426. Your assistance in helping to recruit volunteers in your community is always most appreciated.

Jeffers Pond Elementary is one of 64 schools in the nation that received a Green Ribbon School designation from the U.S. Department of Education. Additionally, Prior LakeSavage Area Schools is one of 14 districts in the nation to receive the Green Ribbon Sustainability Award. PLSAS received the awards based on its commitment to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways. We were honored to be invited to Washington D.C. to receive the awards last June. Now, this fall, our award plaques will be proudly displayed in all of our schools for the public to see.

We’re Looking For YOU... The person with a special interest, talent or subject knowledge that you’d like to share with others. We are looking for teachers willing to add a little “class” to the lives in Prior Lake-Savage. You don’t have to be a licensed teacher. Enthusiasm combined with knowledge of a subject or skill in a special interest area will be enough to get you started. Those of us in Community Education are here to provide assistance on class content, handout production and more. We’ll let you know what we expect, how we will promote your classes and do all we can to help you succeed. You’ll receive an instructor’s handbook with all the practical details you need to know, feedback from class participants and appreciation for your efforts. But it’s not just about Community Ed, it’s about you contributing to your community to make it a better place to be and your own personal growth.

We can’t do it without YOU! Call us at 952-226-0080. Let’s get together and talk possibilities.

Advisory Councils

are active taskoriented groups who make recommendations about policies, procedures, program offerings, budgets, and more for ISD 719 Community Education Services programs. Together these groups determine what resources could be utilized to meet the needs and interests of community members without duplicating the efforts provided by others.

If you would be interested in working with a council to address the lifelong learning needs of our district, please call Leanne Weyrauch, Director at 952-226-0082, to request an application for membership.

Instructor Spotlight Mike Pahl iPad Training

See page 11 for his classes in this catalog.

I have been fascinated with technology most of my life. When I was in elementary school and middle school I was your typical “geek”. I read computer magazines, watched tech shows hosted by Leo Leporte, and my favorite part of the Sunday paper was the Best Buy and CompUSA ads. In high school I took as many technology related classes that I could (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Web Design, etc). A couple of years after high school I started working at the Apple Store Mall of America. Between 2006 and 2011, I sold hundreds of Macs, thousands of iPods, and too many iPhones and iPads to count. I also taught many workshops on Apple software and hardware and trained people in One to One sessions. In February 2011, I started Nice Guy Technology where I have the honor of helping people get the most out of technology. When I am not teaching classes or working with clients, I am reading up on the latest trends, following rumors, and learning new skills!

See what actual students of Mike’s are saying: “I feel so much “smarter” on the iPad since the first class and really appreciate how you present the material in an easy-to-understand way!” “This is the second class of Mike’s that I have taken and I have learned so much at each class. He speaks very clearly, makes sure everyone knows exactly what he is doing, keeps the class structured in such a way that questions asked are pertinent to the subject he is talking about. Then he stays after the class to answer other questions and to help people with any problems they may be having. I have been to many classes in my life, and have never been to a class where I have learned so much in one class and where 2 hours seems like 1 hour because you are so intently involved listening to Mike and following along on your iPad with him. I love the “hands-on” way of showing us how to do things. I will continue to attend Mike’s classes.” “I learned so much during your class. You are very patient while we older adults come into the age of all these cool gizmos. I appreciated the fact that you kept control of the class and not letting people take you off track. I will be watching to take more classes next fall after I have practiced what you taught us. I found that in just playing with it, helped me know a bit more as to where I was going before the class.”
