INVITATIONS

PREMIER WEDDING SUMMER | FALL 2018

There is such a thing as too early! Send invitations so that your guests’ maximum anticipation lines up with your big day. Invitations for destination weddings should be sent far enough in advance for your guests to make their travel plans.

Your RSVP Deadline will depend on how much lead time your wedding professionals need. The first one to consider is your caterer’s meal count. Check with each vendor to determine when they need a final number, and set the RSVP return date for a week before that.

Believe it or not, you’ll start receiving gifts even before you walk down the aisle. Send their thank you cards immediately to minimize your workload after the wedding. Once you’re back from your honeymoon, kick it into high gear to get them out no later than six weeks after the wedding.

THE PERFECT INVITATION

Payroll

When your guests receive their wedding invitation, they will immediately form an impression of the ceremony to come. That is why selecting the invitation - the paper, the style, the wording - is an important first step in your wedding plans.

Post Office

Experienced stationers are your best guide, and their advice is available at no charge when you purchase your invitations in their store. Not only do stationers offer assistance on the invitations, but they can also provide helpful hints on when to order and mail them while also determining proper postage budgeting and a myriad of other details.

School & Alumni

Take time to select your invitations and put thought into the decision. Feel the paper samples. What impression do they give? Understated elegance? Fun? Whimsical? Romantic?

Doctor’s Office

Your stationer will know the etiquette for proper wording, including unusual situations such as divorced parents, second marriages, professional titles, religious customs, and so on. Envelopes should be hand addressed in black or charcoal gray ink. You may also choose professional hand calligraphy or an automated calligraphy machine for the envelopes. To determine how many invitations to order, count each couple and single guest, each attendant, parents, family and clergy. Order extra invitations to handle surprises and extra envelopes for addressing mistakes. Be certain to pre-stamp reply cards, weigh the complete invitation to ensure correct postage and remember to select attractive stamps.

tips for creating your own

wedding website 1. FREE IS THE BEST You can create a personalized site online for free. Search for sites that offer free website services.

2. MAKE IT NEED-TO-KNOW + A LITTLE EXTRA There are two reasons to make a wedding website. One is to give guests need-toknow info that may not be included on the invite. The second reason is to add more information that guests will want to know, like suggested attire.

3. DON’T HOLD BACK WHEN DISPLAYING REGISTRY DETAILS You can add links directly to your registries.

4. ADD PERSONAL DETAILS Let visitors to your site get to know you better by giving them a little bit of background on yourself and your soon-to-be spouse. Tell the story of how you met and include pictures of the proposal.

5. FAR AWAY FRIENDS & FAM WILL THANK YOU Post logistical details for guests making travel plans.

6. DON’T FORGET TO PROOFREAD Double-check that all the addresses and other facts are correct. You don’t want your guests to get lost or confused.

Choosing

DRESS STYLES Just started looking at wedding dresses and not sure where to begin? Torn between a ball gown and a sheath style dress? Here are some descriptions of dress silhouettes to help you while shopping for the most important dress of your life!

Sheath A dress that creates a close silhouette to the body. Typically, a sheath style uses charmeuse or very soft and flowing material that fits close to the body, with some beading on an overlay. The sheath style gown is a perfect fit for casual weddings.

Mermaid Also known as a fit and flare gown, the mermaid gown

looks great on girls with tiny waists and for those who want to show off their curves. Accentuate the waist with a belt for more definition.

A-line This dress resembles an “A” that creates a long line for your body. This classically elegant gown is universally flattering and will look great!

Ballgown This gown has a fitted bodice and full skirt. It’s the perfect proportion for any bride with a bustier bosom. If you’ve always dreamed of being a princess, this is the gown for you!

Empire This gown is flattering because it created a long line and disguises the hips. Extending from the bust line, this shape is youthful and elegant.

Believe it or not, there are different types of length when it comes to a wedding gown. You can choose a cocktail length, which is just simply above the knee. Knee length is at the knee, while tea length is just below the knee. High-low length is just below the knee in front with a

train in the back of your gown. A ballerina length dress is a dress that is cut just above the ankle, perfect for ballerinas!

Shopping

FOR THE GOWN Brides have many different ideas of how they should shop for a wedding gown. Some appointments are just like brides imagine. They come in with their mother and all their friends. They try on dresses until they find “the one. Everyone cries, champagne is served, and the bride leaves happy having found the perfect, dream dress. Unfortunately, that is not how bridal shopping usually happens. Here are a few tips to help new brides have the wonderful bridal experience they are expecting at their bridal appointment.

ADVICE FROM A BRIDAL SPECIALIST LAURA CIEGLO LACE BRIDAL EXPERIENCE What are the most important things brides need to know before they start to search for their wedding gown? Shopping for a bridal gown is a more custom experience than brides may be used to with normal retail shopping. We tell brides to come with some ideas about what you like, but be open to being introduced to fabrics, styles and cuts you may have never thought of before. The fit specialist’s job is to help you find the gown that you are going to look and feel amazing wearing. Brides need to look for details they like rather than particular dress styles. What fabrics do you like? What type

of beading? What sleeve appeals to you? It is easier to work with their preferences than it is to make a particular dress work for them. Also, we encourage brides to be realistic about her budget. Magazines and Pinterest are full of $30,000 custom gowns with detailing that they aren’t going to find for $3,000.

What are the trends in bridal you see coming in 2019, and what designers do you have that embrace those trends? Capes are still on the horizon and you’ll see a lot of them at weddings in the coming year. There is a return to the A-line

ballgown silhouette, and we are seeing lots of floral embroidery on gowns for brides, bridesmaids and mothers. Veils are really big again. Almost all of our brides are purchasing veils now. We’ve even sold some fascinators for brunches, and gloves, gloves of all lengths are being paired with simple gowns for a really elegant look. A few of our most fashion forward designers are Jaclyn Jordan, Desiree Spice, southern designer Laine Berry, and celebrity designer, Philippe Matthew.

Let’s talk about styling. There’s more to a bridal look than just the dress. Tell us about Lace’s styling services. Our styling services are available to all of our brides. We will work with a bride’s wedding planner or directly with the DIY bride to help coordinate the wedding fashion to the style and design of the wedding. We make sure all the looks are coordinated together, the bride, bridesmaids, and mothers, and help her select styles that make sense for her venue and theme. We ask our brides lots of questions about her wedding in the pre-interview and ask her to bring us photos of her plans to make sure the gown she is choosing works with her complete wedding. We also offer styling to brides who may have purchased a gown elsewhere. She can bring her gown in, and our specialists will help her coordinate veils, belts, shoes, and accessories to complete her look.

Lace Bridal Experience carries beautiful gowns and special occasion wear for brides, the wedding party, and mothers as well as great special occasion looks for rehearsal dinners, engagement parties and showers. Lace Bridal designers embrace the beautiful southern bride with her curves and height, love of traditions, desire for vintage flair, and bohemian coastal influence. Wedding gowns at Lace can be designed in sizes 00-32 and range in price from $1,200 – $10,000 in store. Lace Fit Specialists spend time with brides ensuring an exceptional fit for your special day. 64 |

his deco glam wedding may look like the real thing, but it was actually part of a faux wedding showcase presented

by the Beau Rivage Casino & Resort in Biloxi, MS. Designed by Lydia Noble of Noble Events, LLC, this ultra-glam event featured black, white, and metallic deco-inspired styling with a host of amazing details to wow the most discerning guests. The Beau Rivage team of florists and caterers provided most of the details from the amazing food stations, wedding cake and dessert towers, floral creations and even an ice sculpture centerpiece. Extra rental items like the chiavari ghost chairs, linens, and outdoor furnishings were brought in from Blue Rents of Mobile, AL to complete the look. Guests in attendance were treated to a luxurious gulf coast seafood buffet and specialty drinks while they visited with area wedding professionals. Guests and the “wedding party” outfitted with beautiful gowns and tuxedos from Mimi’s Bridal of Laurel, MS danced the night away to music from AJC and The Envelope Pushers and were entertained by a special choreographed dance from the bride and bridesmaids. Live painters, a caricaturist and a belly dancer added fun elements to the evening. Guests of the event enjoyed a fun night out and came away with fresh, new ideas for their own weddings

hire a pro B AR T E N D E R TAKE YOUR WEDDING SPIRITS TO THE NEXT LEVEL You’ve hired professional photographers, caterers, musicians, and videographers to make your wedding day an unforgettable one. Don’t overlook everyone’s favorite pro: the bartender!

Drinks are garnished just-so, and they’re able to craft cocktails based on individual guest’s preferences. You can also work with your bartender to create one or more signature drinks for your wedding.

Not only can you count on knowledgeable, speedy drink service for your guests, but a professional bartender will handle the nitty gritty, like the bar’s inventory and shopping list. You won’t have to trouble yourself with glassware, ice, mixers, or garnishes — just sit back, relax, and enjoy your professionally-poured cocktail. But it’s more than meticulous drink mixing: like other wedding pros, bartenders are artists.

Before hiring a professional bartender for your wedding, do your research. First, inquire with your venue and caterer. Some have restrictions on who’s allowed to serve alcohol on site. Others require that the venue or caterer provide the alcohol, as opposed to purchasing it off site. How many bartenders do you need? Check your guest count. A general rule is

75 people per bartender. When budgeting, figure two to three drinks per person during cocktail hour and one drink per person, per hour, for the rest of the night. To determine whether or not a professional bartender is the right fit for your wedding, meet with a professional near you!

Fun & Festive Creative ideas for incorporating personal touches your reception.

Looking for some creative ideas to add some fun to your reception? Today’s receptions are all about the guest experience, and creative couples are raising the bar with interactive games and activities that keep their guests engaged and their receptions lively. Let’s face it, a big chunk of your bridal budget is spent on the reception. It is what most people remember about a wedding, and everyone wants their wedding to be memorable. Couples have found ways to put a modern twist on even the most timeless of wedding reception traditions. Choreographed dances are popular for the entire wedding party. Some brave couples even work with instructors to prepare a special first dance for their guests. The tradition of simply tossing the garter over the groom’s shoulder has given way to launching a garter clad football. The bride and groom are even finding creative ways to record the names of their guests tossing out the traditional guest book in favor of guests writing their names on puzzle pieces or words of wisdom written on smooth river stones. While served dinners are still in vogue for the most formal affairs, many couples are opting for buffet-style serving with special stations or food bars as a way of including cuisine special to the couple. Signature cocktails have become

popular as well often mimicking the colors of the wedding and having creative names such as the White Wedding martini or Blushing Bride champagne cocktail. Couples are utilizing the station concept for fun activities for their guests. Special lounge areas with comfortable couches and occasional tables that are perfect for intimate conversation are being staged in venues. Grooms are requesting cigar bars and craft beer flights for their friends. Receptions that include young children and teens now offer a special room for video games, wedding piñatas or movies. Outdoor weddings incorporate lawn games such as croquet or cornhole (bean bag toss) or oversized versions of kids’ games like giant Jenga or Connect Four that keep the fun going all day long. Temporary tattoo stations with custom designed art that reflect the wedding’s colors or flowers are cute for tatted couples, and the inclusion of a caricaturist to create favors for guests adds a special flair. Even the photo booth has evolved with companies offering elaborate photo or video pods, selfie stations or character cut outs for fun photo opportunities. The possibilities for a fun and active reception are as unique as each pair and as endless as your imagination.

ALABAMA GULF COAST ALABAMA

alabama’s own piece of paradise

F

rom the sugar-white sands to the crashing waves and warm, tropical breeze, the gulf coast region is Alabama’s little stretch of paradise. Stretching from Dauphin Island, through Gulf Shores to Orange Beach, the coastal region features turquoise waters, relaxing views, and exciting nightlife. With venue options ranging from traditional churches and event venues to private beach front homes and luxury resorts, the Alabama gulf coast has something for everyone. Couples dreaming of a beach front wedding, can host their events just steps from the water. There are countless private homes managed by realty companies that specialize in weddings and can accommodate your entire wedding party or family for a weekend escape or week-long destination event. Just an hour south of the bay, the gulf coast is an easy drive for those in surrounding cities or states or destination wedding guests flying into Mobile from anywhere. Dauphin Island is the more relaxed community along the coast featuring the historic Ft. Gaines and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Populated mostly with private beach and bay-side homes, Dauphin island is perfect for

a more intimate wedding although there are a couple of larger venue options including Ft. Gaines for those with a love of history. The Gulf Shores area is famous for those beautiful sugar-white beaches, fresh seafood, championship golf courses, charter fishing trips, wildlife areas and historic sites. Foley, a town about 20 minutes from the Gulf, is a water-sports paradise and wildly popular with those seeking a little retail therapy in its super-size outlet mall. Surrounded by back bays and rivers, there are many opportunities for outdoor recreation and fresh seafood. For the fun-loving couple who wants to add a little night-life excitement to their wedding weekend, Orange Beach is just the place. Offering miles of sugar-white sand beaches with access to the interior bays and bayous lying just north of Perdido Pass, Orange Beach hosts many luxury resorts with spas and amenities to add to your wedding experience. Visitors can also enjoy a lengthy list of other attractions including Adventure Island, deepsea fishing, Orange Beach Golf Center, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Waterville USA and The Wharf which boasts a number of resorts with wedding venues as well. MOBILE | EASTERN SHORE ALABAMA

the cultural home of the gulf south

F

rom the historic and hip city of Mobile to laid-back, southern charm of the Eastern Shore, the area surrounding Mobile Bay is perfect for couples to plan the wedding of their dreams whatever that may be. Fun and festive, historic and hip, cool and cultured, Mobile has something for everyone. From the Mardi Gras parades that roll through every winter to dozens of festivals, art shows and events, there is always something going on in Mobile that will add to your wedding guests’ experience whether they are locals or in town for your destination wedding. A Mobile wedding has a certain elegance indicative of the old south. Mobile brides are modern, but their southern roots show in the timeless and classic touches you see in their wedding décor and personal style. Not that Mobile doesn’t see its share of alternative and contemporary events. The city is the cultural center of the coastal region. Artists and creatives abound in this area, and they bring their sense of fun and flair for life to their wedding style. A number of historic homes like The Ezell House serve as beautiful venues with antebellum styling and gorgeous courtyards for traditional southern weddings. Incredible hotels such as the historic Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa, the Malaga Inn, and the Admiral Hotel offer amazing ballrooms for classic elegant events. Mingling among the historic buildings are more

contemporary venues like The Steeple, a converted church where couples can wed under Tiffany-inspired windows. For the more informal affair, Mobile is surrounded by neighborhoods with beautifully landscaped parks and squares, and couples looking for something different can plan their event at galleries or among the exhibits at the History Museum of Mobile or the fun Mobile Carnival Museum which celebrates all things Mardi Gras! Mobile is located about an hour from the sugar-white sands of the gulf coast where a lot of couple select to start their honeymoon. The city is also home to a nice regional airport and home to the Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal where the Carnival ships depart three days a week. For those seeking a more relaxed location, the Eastern Shore is an absolute paradise for outdoor activities, from strolling among the quaint boutiques and galleries to boating, fishing and water-related fun. The Eastern Shore encompasses seven communities and municipalities: Daphne, Blakeley, Malbis, Montrose, Point Clear, Spanish Fort and Fairhope where residents have carefully maintained the areas native environment and southern charm. Some of the area’s most picturesque venues are located in the Eastern Shore communities, and the small towns are full of some of the most talented and creative wedding professionals in the area. guests WILL

travel

Most hotels provide a discounted rate when you reserve a block of rooms. The number of rooms required to qualify for a group rate will vary by hotel. Some hotels offer additional services such as a hospitality suite for your guests to gather for breakfast or cocktails, and, if needed, special checkout considerations. It’s a good idea to consider the different economic situations of your out-of-town guests. Provide two or three options to create a comfortable price range. While some of your guests may be on a limited budget, others will be combining their vacation with your wedding.

Traditionally, it is the duty of the bride’s family to recommend accomodations for out-of-town guests. However, it is not their resposibility to pay for them. Include printed information in the wedding invitation such as toll free numbers for each hotel, the name under which the reservation is held, and hotel shuttle information so your guests can call the hotel directly to make their reservations. Is is appropriate for the bride and groom to arrange transportations to and from the ceremony and reception locations for all out-of-town guests. Is is perfectly acceptable to arrange for family and friends to provide the transportation.

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD Something borrowed, something blue. Something historic or something new. The Renaissance Hotels of Mobile offer two luxury options to make your wedding vision a reality. Celebrate at the Battle House, Mobile’s historic hotel dating back to 1852 and renowned for exceptional Southern hospitality. If modern and sleek is more your style, Renaissance Riverview Plaza offers contemporary options with a bit of a nautical flair. Either way, prepare to be pampered in these Four Diamond hotels. Getting There The moments between the ceremony & reception are exciting ones too, and it’s only fitting to be whisked off in style with your loved ones. Here are some tips to make your transport as fun, affordable, and memorable as the rest of your day!

In Style FIRST HOW MANY? First decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? Whaat about their spouses or dates? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size. Whatever form of transportation you select, keep safety in mind for when revelers are bouncing from one location to another. LIMOS If there is a day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle, your wedding is it. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, so you could get a high-class ride to pick you up at the house and deliver you to both the ceremony and reception. Most companies have a one or two hour minimum for their services. If you want a car for both going and leaving the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit during a long reception. Many options exist for limos. A formal limousine seats four, but to include the wedding party opt for a stretch limo for six to 10. For larger parties and a flashier mode of transport, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and unique both inside and out. The larger models are often posh, with flashy lights and decorative interiors. CATCH THE COACH For larger parties, a party bus or luxury coach is a great way to travel. Offering all the amenities of a luxury limousine, these elaborate options have room to spare. Or, for even larger groups, a passenger coach or party bus can seat 21 to 49 people. For a small wedding, this is a fun

way to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of your party it may make sense to hire two coaches, maybe a luxury coach for the bride, groom and attendants and a passenger coach for the guests. TAKING THE TROLLEY A fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or passenger coach is a trolley. They’ll generally accommodate between 20 and 35 people, so they’re great for larger parties or adding on some family members. With this antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns or neighborhood weddings so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds. UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Some new couples might opt for something more personal or creative. A horse-drawn carriage is a romantic, vintage option, especially if you can decorate it with your wedding colors. Vintage cars are also great photo ops and add a touch of class. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are fun and unique. Ride in style like the royal couple did in a decorated navy softtop Aston Martin Volante, or as with other details in the wedding, make sure your transportation reflects your personality. Does the groom ride a motorcycle? Ride off together on your own bike. Do you share a love of mountain biking? Don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable.

THE BIG

Send-Off The send-off is one of those time honored traditions that never fails to elicit great enthusiasm from wedding guests and makes for wonderful photos for the happy couple. Traditionally rice was thrown at the newlyweds as a symbol of prosperity and fertility. When guests threw rice at the bride and groom, they were wishing them a life full of good fortune and children. Somewhere in the mid-eighties, the idea that rice was harmful to birds began to make the rounds. Rice was rumored to swell in birds’ digestive tracts causing the birds to explode, which was proven to be complete nonsense as rice is a natural substance consumed by birds and other animals for centuries without incident. Regardless, the tradition of throwing rice was quickly replaced by wedding guests throwing bird seed at couples as they left the church. The tradition continues to this day, but brides have become quite creative with their send-off incorporating a number of fun items turning the tradition into an even more special and personalized part of their wedding. 206 |

PREMIER WEDDING SUMMER | FALL 2018

CONFETTI Confetti cones are given to guests in fun shapes or shades matching the bridal party attire. GLITTER Glam brides prefer the sparkle of glitter although it does get imbedded in hair and clothing. We love the fairy dust idea for princess brides. LAVENDER Biodegradable and fragrant, nature loving brides love lavender or dried herbs. SPARKLERS Sparklers have become a popular send-off, especially for night time weddings. SEASONAL AND HOLIDAY Fall leaves are perfect for an autumn wedding. Snowflake confetti or fake snow highlight a Christmas or winter fete. Use red heart balloons or heart shaped cutouts for a Valentine’s Day event. THEMED Toss tiny beach balls for a seaside wedding, or shake pompoms in your favorite team colors.

BALLOONS A tunnel of balloons makes for a beautiful send off. Some beach areas ask you not to release balloons as they can be harmful to sea life. FLOWER PETALS Choose petals from your favorite flower or to match flowers in your bouquet. BUBBLES Some venues do not allow guests to throw confetti and other items that will leave a mess on the grounds. Bubbles are a great option when this is the case.

GET CREATIVE! Think outside the box and get creative with your send-off choices. Glow sticks, silly string, sprinkles, small candies, or paper airplanes make for memorable send-offs, or use something that spotlights your personal hobbies or interests. When it comes to your wedding send-off, you’re only limited by your imagination!

HAIR ACCESSORIES VS. TRADITIONAL VEIL Hair accessories can be a nice accent for either the most traditional or modern-day bride. Bigger accessories look best when the hair is in an updo. Smaller accessories look best in half-up hairstyles. Headband pieces look great with any hairstyle. If you are going to wear a traditional veil, stick with a simpler hair accessory in the back of the hair. CONSIDER THE VENUE Planning a hairstyle that will hold nicely against any weather conditions is important for an outdoor wedding. For southern brides, wearing your hair in an updo is recommended because there is a big chance your hair will not hold up if your wedding is outdoors due to the southern humidity. Indoor weddings allow a bride to be more creative and comfortable with her hairstyle. A bride should choose a look that complements her dress and can stay in place for her fun-filled day.
