No Wedding Party? No Problem!

With smaller, more intimate weddings on the rise, having a large wedding party (or even one at all) doesn’t work for everyone. Today, we’re walking you through how to navigate your big day without one and how most importantly, it’s perfectly okay to not want a wedding party. How to Tell Your Friends

Have Special People Involved in Your Day

Breaking the news to your friends might have mixed results. Some of your crew may be secretly relieved. After all, it is an investment for them and can sometimes be thousands of dollars. But others may be a bit hurt. Our best course of action is to explain to them why you don’t want to have one whether it’s because of time, guest list, budget, or just not your style. However, be sure to emphasize that they are still a valued addition to your wedding day.

Even without a wedding party, you can still include some of your special people in the day after all. Consider who will be ushering, greeting, doing special readings during the ceremony, and giving reception toasts. And don’t forget about when you’re getting ready. You can still have your girls and guys with you the morning of!

Navigating Wedding Activities Just because you don’t have a wedding party doesn’t mean that you can’t have the traditional wedding party activities like a bachelor/bachelorette party, bridal shower, or lingerie party. You can still do those things! For your bach parties, consider a joint trip with your spouse-to-be and his/her friends! You can even invite more people than just a potential bridesmaids or groomsmen list. Or keep it to those closest to you. Totally your decision! 8

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Remember, It’s Okay! It’s okay to not have a wedding party! Bottom line is it’s your day. Wedding party or not, you can still have all the things you envisioned for it. And your closest friends and family will still be there to celebrate your love whether they’re standing beside you in a $300 bridesmaids dress or seated wiping away tears as you marry your person.

5 Things To Do After You Get Engaged Samantha Jean Becker

Create Your Vision

What’s your wedding style? This is the fun part where you get to look at some awesome wedding magazines, search Pinterest for inspiration, and browse real weddings on wedding blogs. This is when you start the brainstorming process – don’t feel like you need to make any major decisions at this point. It’s more to gather thoughts around the look of your wedding.

Think About Hiring a Wedding Planner

You’re Engaged, Now What?. From #ringselfies to wedding venues, we covered most topics you’ll want to start thinking about after you get engaged. by Alyssa DiCicco

Celebrate Your Engagement

Enjoy the moment! Tell your engagement story! Make those #ringselfie posts. Then, take a deep breath and take it all in. Don’t feel like you need to have all the answers friends + family members are going to ask you. Relax and enjoy this time with your fiancè – pour some champagne and celebrate the moment!

Think About the Time of the Year You Want to Get Married The first question people ask you is “What’s the date?”. Don’t feel like you need to have an exact answer. However start thinking about what time of year you’d like to get married. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of that spring wedding with blooming flowers, or maybe the fall leaves and crisp autumn air are more your style. Once you nail down the season, then you can start focusing on an actual date. 14

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

This is the point where you’ll want to hire some help for planning your wedding. Think about it – you won’t want your mom or sisters running around trying to put out any fires that may occur on your wedding day. Leave the logistics and behind the scenes part of your day to a professional. Plus, wedding planners can help you stick to your budget and shop for the best wedding professionals to fit your budget.

Look at Venues

Your wedding planner can help you find venues that fit within your budget and also within your style (think back to steps 3 + 4!). There are so many different styles of wedding venues to choose from! Do you want to get married downtown? Or maybe you like the countryside and a barn might be the best choice for you! Think about these things and start scheduling venue tours.

How Sweet It Is(n’t) Savory Alternatives to Traditional Wedding Cake

Wedding cakes can be a huge part of the big day, but what if you don’t like sweets? Here are 4 non-sweet alternatives to wedding cake! It’s okay to not have a cake! Breakfast Foods

Pizza

Cheese Cake

Fruit

So some of these may classify as sweet, like waffles, but those are savory too, right? And honestly, who doesn’t like breakfast foods? Create a pancake or waffle tower to resemble a cake shape. Or just go full on with a breakfast spread of eggs, croissants, crepes, bacon, etc. You already know we would be first in line! No, not cheesecake as in Cheesecake Factory. We’re talking about a literal cheese wheel wedding cake. You can mix and match your favorite cheeses through the tiers! You can even have fun mini-taste testings before the big day and talk about a way to ramp up your charcuterie board skills in the process. Just be sure to take texture and smell into consideration when planning your cheese wheel cake. 28

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Weddings are more nontraditional than ever right now, and we are fully embracing it! Your wedding should be about things that reflect your style and tastes, and why not pizza? Picture pizza towers with different toppings on each or one long table with a little of everything. Deep dish or thin crust, doesn’t matter grab a slice. The original sweets – fruits! Yes, I know fruits technically are sweet, but they are in a league of their own when compared to typical wedding desserts. However you want to style your chosen berries and melons, there is no wrong way to go! This is perfect for an early brunch or midday wedding too! Stephanie Couture Photography

Potter at one time. Arrange all the candy, chips, and popcorn into a snack buffet in front of the tv, and cuddle in. Bonus points if you go all out for a special theme!

Take It Back

Recreate your first date at home or take a stroll to the spot where he proposed and changed your life forever. It’s super romantic, and makes you remember the reason behind all the wedding planning stress and what’s important.

Create Some Heat in the Kitchen

Cook together! With new boxed meals delivered right to your door, it’s easier than ever before and so easy. You can try to recreate your favorite dishes from your local spot or try something completely new! This is an amazing way to spend time together and maybe find a new hobby you both enjoy. Tired of eating at home? Load it all up and head out for a romantic picnic just for two. awesomesauce photography

Photoshoot

Whip out the old camera or even your iPhone for a one-on-one photoshoot! You’ll love to have photos of one another when you’re old and gray, Taylor Shea Photography

especially from those months before your big day. Plus, it’s great to get dressed up or down (wink, wink) and create some art together. PS –– DIY boudoir shoots with your partner or spouse are oh so sexy and great wedding gifts for each other!

DIY Project

Speaking of DIY, whether it’s the dresser from IKEA you’ve been meaning to put together for months or a completely new idea, tackle the project together! Pick something you can incorporate into your new home. You’ll feel amazing once it’s done, and you have a new memory of the two of you working as a team!

Game Night

Put your game face on! Playing board games and trivia with one another is such a simple way of checking out of real life for a moment to just have fun. You could even have a championship with some type of wager. No sore losers allowed though!

Destination I Do’s

Grace Photography

Long-distance anything is hard. Relationships, running (don’t even get me started there), and, yes, wedding planning too. Today we’re talking all about LDWP aka long-distance wedding planning. Adding a far-off location to the already stressful seas of wedding planning? Double whammy. No worries, we’re here to guide you through LDWP with ease with these 10 tips! 1. Find Your Theme & Stick to It A simple way of kickstart your wedding planning, long-distance or not, and being efficient while doing so is to find your theme and stick to it. Once you have a theme in mind, the detail and style decisions tend to get a little easier and you won’t get bogged down in random Pinterest ideas. It also helps to communicate to your vendors, so you can streamline choices. 2. Hire a Wedding Planner Speaking of vendors, your best bet is to hire a local wedding planner or at least a month-of-coordinator for your out-of-town wedding. They will know the local wedding market, have relationships with other vendors, and be able to be your point person throughout the madness. 54

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

3. Be Prepared to Hit the Ground Running If you can travel to your wedding destination, make sure you are prepared to jump in head first. Try to book most of your vendor meetings within the timeframe of your trip. Especially for tastings, fittings, or anything that can’t be done through phone calls, emails, and online. This may mean 5 meetings in one day. You got this! 4. Hello Zoom! If the last year didn’t made Zoom your newest BFF, wait until you’re LDWP. Zoom calls can be incredibly beneficial especially if you can’t make the trip to your wedding destination.

5. Here or There List Your here or there list is an easy way of determining what all needs to be done when and where for a destination wedding. It’s deciding what can/ should be done where you live vs. what needs to be done in the venue location where you are getting married. 6. Try to Do as Much as You Can Locally Let’s try to ease your stress about doing everything in a different location than where you live. It doesn’t all have to be done there! Things like your invitations, favors, and attire fittings can be done in your city or town, so you can get those tasks completed early with no travel needed. 7. Don’t Sleep on Transportation Don’t, don’t, don’t forget about arranging for your transportation! Whether it’s booking a flight and getting a rental car, or just figuring out how everyone is getting around, don’t leave this to the last minute. You would be surprised at how simple things can be forgotten and add a whole new level of stress into the mix. Misty McLendon Photography

9. Arrive Early Try to arrive a little early to your destination wedding location if you can. A week before would be great, but at least the Wednesday or Thursday before a Saturday wedding. Arriving early lets you tie up any loose ends and have a little break between traveling and the big day. 10. Breathe Last, but not least, just breathe. Go ahead and take a deep breath! Every wedding day is going to have some hiccups and have a few things not go according to plan, even a wedding in your own city or backyard. Be prepared for something not to go exactly right, and remember what you’re planning for anyway. It’s not just a wedding, but a marriage! That’s what’s more important!

MAC Photo Co.

8. Delegate if You Need To If you’re getting overwhelmed, don’t feel bad about delegating some of the tasks, especially if you’re in the research stages of finding the right vendors or venue in your wedding location. Hand it off to your wedding planner, MOH, or family!

Pro tip: If you’re booking a destination wedding with a resort, make sure the hotel’s planner is an experienced wedding planner. While an experienced resort planner often comes with the wedding package, she may be limited by the package options without the flexibility to create an event with all the special details you want. Check out local wedding planners if you want a destination wedding event that is truly unique. IDOYALL.COM | 55

Must-Haves for Microweddings Robert Matthews Photo

MbM Photography

Okay, so you’ve decided to have a smaller wedding aka a microwedding! Maybe it was because of a limited budget, or a desire for a more intimate gathering. A small-scale wedding can still be big on inspiration which is why we want to talk about the must-haves for a Pinterest-worthy microwedding! Wait, so what is a microwedding exactly?

A microwedding is everything a normal wedding is just with a smaller guest count (usually 50 guests or less). It still includes a ceremony and reception and all the good things in between. Whether it’s in your backyard or at a fancy venue, it can still be everything you dreamed of but only with your nearest and dearest.

Elevated Guest Experience

This is definitely one of our favorite reasons to hold a microwedding. With a smaller guest count, you’re able to focus more of your time and budget towards each individual guest. So think more elaborate favors, wedding weekend gift baskets for everyone, and more actual time with each guest at your wedding. You and your people will leave the weekend feeling so incredibly loved and connected in a way that only intimate gatherings can. 128

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

More Personal Details

Okay, this may be our top reason to have a microwedding. Weddings are supposed to be about you and your future spouse coming together and building a life. So of course personal details are a given! With a smaller wedding, you’re able to incorporate more of these. For example, instead of a ballroom, you can have an intimate reception at your favorite restaurant where you’re regulars or where you had your first date. You can have everyone at the wedding give a toast and include their best stories. The list goes on and on, but we’re big advocates for making a wedding that is completely you and there’s no better way than by adding tons of personal details.

Great Food

We can’t leave this out. With a small-scale wedding, there may not be as much attention on the dance floor and DJ, but it makes for great dinner and conversation. So make sure that food is delicious! And like we mentioned above, when you include your favorite restaurant or food truck, you already know it is! Also, a smaller guest count could mean more menu options for each guest.

Don’t skip things you want

Just because your wedding is 50 guests and not 150 doesn’t mean you can’t have it all. If you want the full she-bang wedding experience, do it! It’s still your wedding day after all.

Comfort Food & Drink Ideas for Your Wedding Here in the south, we celebrate all of life’s events with food, so it’s perfectly reasonable for our wedding couples to bring a little southern comfort to the table. If you’re wanting to add a little bit of casual comfort into your wedding menu, try some of these ideas. Biscuit Bar

Charcuterie Boards

One of the holy grails of comfort foods for us Southerners is the biscuit! Add your favorite jams, butters, and more to make it truly unique to your tastes.

Oh, how we love charcuterie boards here at IDY. Two options we love are to either have a large grazing table during cocktail hour or have multiple smaller boards scattered throughout your guest tables.

Grilled Cheese & Soup Shooters Want something to warm your guests hearts and bring some childhood memories? Try grilled cheese and tomato soup shooters!

S’mores A s’mores station is excellent for wedding receptions! It’s a great group activity around a fire pit under the stars. Plus the kiddos in attendance will be in chocolate and marshmallow heaven! 152

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Donuts Donuts are the perfect after dinner snack and make a great option for an alternative to wedding cake as well! Think donuts are played out? Try a late-night beignet station or have someone creating on-the-spot funnel cakes instead. Pair these warm and yummy confections with coffee or milk for an end of the evening treat! pheobe o + co.

#WhatsThePoint

ALL THINGS

#hashtags

Photographers can’t capture everything! Your guests will be taking photos throughout your big day and hashtags are a way for you to see them all in one place. Encourage your guests to share hashtagged photos across social media platforms and turn your wedding guests into your personal paparazzi.

#WorthIt Hashtags are for more than just your big day! Use your hashtag for all engagement and wedding related memories. Relive every special moment in one place with your wedding hashtag. Go through snapshots the second your heels come off, or when you are sunning with your sweetie on your honeymoon. Guests can relive their favorite moments after your big day or see what they missed out on if they weren’t able to attend.

#SpreadTheWord (or hashtag) How do you let everyone know what hashtag to use? Announce your hashtag on social media or wedding website and ask your guests to use it. Letterboards or signs are trendy ways to convey information and can be placed in key spots around your festivities to share the world like near the guestbook, your program, and your welcome sign. Don’t forget your #selfiestation or photobooth!

#Wingman Need help making your hashtag? Use an online generator or sit down for a hash it out with your honey for #datenight. Not feeling a hashtag with your last names? Use your venue or location to create your hashtag.

#RogersOnTheRiver #BrentsInTheBarn #ChapmansInTheChapel #HitchedInHattiesburg

This real wedding couple’s last names were Polk & Nodhturft. Have fun with your hashtag and don’t be scared to show your personality as a couple!

Desserts that taste as good as they look. Always fresh, always from scratch. Taste the difference.

Redefining Your Honeymoon Unless you’ve been living under a major rock (and if so, can we join you?!), you know that weddings and honeymoons have looked A LOT different during the last couple of years. While most travel restrictions have lifted, now may not be the best time to take that European vacation. Maybe you’re focused on taking advantage of the housing market right now and prefer to invest your money. Whatever your alternate plans are, we are here to help you redefine your honeymoon experience with some unconventional honeymoon ideas that can help you and your honey have an enjoyable honeymoon even if it’s not quite like what you envisioned! As an added bonus, these are all some great money saving, honeymoon ideas as well!

164

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Postpone Your Honeymoon to a Later Date If you still want a honeymoon just as you imagined before, then postponing your honeymoon to a later date may be the option for you. Take advantage of off-season travel dates to save some major money. Just because you don’t take your honeymoon immediately after the wedding doesn’t make it any less of one. Take time to settle into your new home together, then plan (and save) for a big trip sometime later in the year.

Roadtrip Honeymoon Let’s bring back road trips - just you and your new hubby/wifey driving along and experiencing a new area together. Grab your favorite snacks, make a playlist, and hit the road. Remember, it’s not necessarily about where you go, but who you’re with.

Staycation Honeymoon Or you don’t have to even leave your city for the honeymoon! How about a staycation honeymoon? Turn off your phones, book a fancy hotel, and go to nice restaurants you haven’t tried before. Explore the city in a whole new light or just stay in the hotel the whole time (wink, wink). There’s more options than you think! Joanna & Brett Photography

pheobe o + co.

Glamping Honeymoon For those more adventurous couples out there, why not consider a glamping honeymoon! Get together in the great outdoors with plenty of exciting activities and wilderness vibes while still having a romantic setting! Sleep under the stars, cozy up in a cabin, or even stay in a treehouse. There’s nothing traditional about this honeymoon.

Local Honeymoons If you still want the travel aspect of a honeymoon without the road trip, consider destinations that are closer to home. Check out a nearby city that you haven’t visited yet or revisit your favorite vacation spot. We may be biased, but the south is full of amazing honeymoon locations that you can get to in just a matter of hours. Choose from countless beaches across the gulf coast, secluded mountain hideaways, romantic low-country cottages, or bustling big cities. Not to mention, think back to our parents and grandparents who usually didn’t have these luxurious honeymoons jet setting all over the world. In those terms, it starts to feel a little more classic this way. IDOYALL.COM | 165

Getting There in Style

Aislinn Kate Weddings

The moments between the ceremony & reception are exciting ones too, and it’s only fitting to be whisked off in style with your loved ones.

FIRST HOW MANY?

First decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? What about their spouses or dates? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size.

LIMOS

If there is a day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle, your wedding day is it. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, and most companies have a one or two hour minimum. If you want a car for both going and leaving the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit during a long reception. A formal limousine seats four, but to include the wedding party opt for a stretch limo for six to 10.

CATCH THE COACH

For larger parties, a party bus or luxury coach is a great way to travel. Offering all the amenities of a luxury limousine, these elaborate options have room to spare. For even larger groups, a passenger coach or party bus can seat 21 to 49 people. For a small wedding, this is a fun way 172

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours.

TAKING THE TROLLEY

A fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or passenger coach is a trolley. They’ll generally accommodate between 20 and 35 people, so they’re great for larger parties or adding on some family members. With this antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns or neighborhood weddings so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds.

UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES

A horse-drawn carriage is a romantic, vintage option, and like vintage cars, are also great photo ops. As with other details in the wedding, make sure your transportation reflects your personality. Does the groom ride a motorcycle? Ride off together on your own bike. Do you share a love of mountain biking? Don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable.

The Best Wedding Exit Ideas Sparklers, Pom Poms, + More!

Haleigh Kirkland Photo

by Alyssa DiCicco

Exciting times call for exciting wedding photos, which is why I’m rounding up some of my favorite wedding exit ideas for some pretty creative wedding exits! Sparklers

Glow Sticks

Confetti or Rice

Pom Poms and Ribbons

As one of the most common wedding exit ideas, a sparkler tunnel is a beautiful choice! Plus, it makes for some incredible photos! Remember, the longer the sparkler, the better. Depending on how much wait time you are allowing or how far away your getaway car is, don’t let the spark run out on your guests’ sparklers. And check with your venue to make sure they allow a sparkler exit before you make any plans. Purchasing some biodegradable confetti or rice is SUCH a fun option for your wedding exit! Walking through a veil of confetti is a great way to end the best day of your life. Rice is very traditional and would work so well for any wedding that vintage and classic. Again, be sure to check with your venue on their clean up policies – it may cost you a bit more to have a confetti exit. 178

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Glow sticks can be a fun novelty at your wedding. Breaking them out (literally!) on the dance floor at the end of the night will also make for some memorable photos! And keeping them going for your wedding exit gives off a modern night clubby vibe at the end of your special day. Tip: buy glow sticks that are within your color scheme for your wedding (make it all come full circle!). From metallic tinsel pom poms to elegant ribbons, this trend is alive and well for brides thinking of wedding exit ideas. This is one of my new favorite wedding trends and I’m hoping to see more of it this coming year! With pom poms, you can literally create your own cheer squad as you leave your wedding and enter into marital bliss!

Wedding Shoes That Aren’t Heels Your wedding day is a BUSY day! From getting ready to making sure everything is perfect and of course, marrying the love of your life! It’s go, go, go from the start. Not to mention, dancing the night away and making your rounds to your guests will have a lot of pressure on your feet too. Of course, you’ll still want to look amazing while doing it all, but those tall heels may not cut it. Let us introduce the wedding shoes that aren’t six inch heels, but still just as cute! Aislinn Kate Photography

Small Heels

Josh Williams Photography

Okay, this one is still a heel, but not nearly as high! Think 2-3” max. Heels in this range usually contain a chunky heel which makes it not only easier to walk in, but also so trendy! Keep it simple with neutrals or bling it out, there’s so many options. Plus, you can definitely wear these again and again.

Sandals Sandals are so popular for beach weddings already, but don’t stop there. They still work for boho weddings, intimate soirees in the backyard, elopements, and more!

Sneakers Ah, my personal favorite: wedding sneakers. There’s really nothing more comfy than throwing on a pair of sneakers to break down that dance floor! Whether they’re fully custom Chuck Taylors or a sparkly pair from Kate Spade, you bet everyone in heels will be so envious of you.

For the Guys Guys, don’t just settle for a simple dress show, and for the love of all that is holy, if you rent your tux, DO NOT attempt to wear those rented shoes. I don’t care if they did come in the garment bag. You’ll be on your feet all day or night long, hopefully with hours of dancing with your new spouse. You want to make sure your footwear is both stylish and comfortable. If you don’t own a great pair of dress shoes, now is the time to invest in a quality pair that will last you for years. Or, might we suggest something a little more daring? Pair a slip-on velvet loafer with a tux, or grab a special pair of sneakers to complete your look. It’s your day too!

MbM Photography

Flats, Loafers, & Mules Flats are a go-to for those of us who hate wearing heels or the exceptionally tall. But if you’re bucking tradition and tossing the heels, why not go for something truly unique? Consider loafers and mules for your wedding day attire! These shoe types will look amazing when paired with a bridal jumpsuit too!

Find the Perfect Wedding Venue

Jessica Lee Photography

by Shannon Tarrant

Your answer to the Big Question was a resounding “YES!” You’ve found the perfect partner… now it’s time to find the perfect wedding venue!

Where do you even start? Most brides or grooms go right to Google. They start searching through tons of wedding venue options before they even really know what they are looking for in a venue. Here are some tips on how to best start looking for a wedding venue and the most important steps to take first.

The budget

We know this is the worst part, but it’s the MOST IMPORTANT! Why torture yourself looking at a wedding venue if there is no chance of it fitting into your budget? Weddings are expensive (worth every penny!) but they can be a sticker shock when you start researching. It’s time to have the real conversation with each other and anyone else contributing to the wedding. Having a general idea of your budget will save you time looking at and touring wedding venues that might break the bank. 210

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

(Tip: When asking family members how much they are planning on contributing, they often reply, “how much do you need for the wedding?” Be prepared with an answer before asking, just in case.)

The guest list

The number of guests attending your wedding is the second most important piece of information to know before contacting venues. Make the list including everyone that you would want to be a part of your special day: friends, family, co-workers. Be sure to review your list with your family to make sure you have not left anyone off. (Tip: Take the big list and split it into an A-list and a B-list. The A-list are those guests you would be really disappointed if they weren’t at the wedding, while the B-list are the attendees that you might not notice weren’t there.)

The venue style

You have to start somewhere, and this is the easiest place! Are you looking for a formal ballroom wedding with black tie and gowns, a country club wedding with cocktail attire, a beach vibe with resort wear, or rustic barn chic with jeans and boots? Whatever your style, make sure you’re both on the same page. (Tip: Decor can transform any location. Chandeliers and drape can make a warehouse look like a ballroom. Don’t limit your wedding venue vision by what you see. Think bigger)

The distance

How far are you willing to go to find that perfect wedding venue? There are probably great venues located within your city or within a few minutes drive. Maybe a destination wedding is what you prefer. Talk to each other about what you think might work the best for you and your wedding guests. (Tip: Remember that travel costs can impact who RSVPs yes. Make sure the most important wedding guests are on board with your plan either way.)

The Bride Candy

The date

How long do you want to wait to get married? Consider the following: availability of wedding venue dates, whether you have the budget available now or need time to save, the weather, how much time you have to plan the wedding, and important guest travel. (Tip: Some wedding venues are booked for prime Saturday dates 12-18 months in advance. Be flexible and consider a Friday or Sunday option if your first choice isn’t available.)

The timeline

This is not the most important factor so we left it for last.

Aislinn Kate Weddings

Single or multiple locations

Do you want your ceremony and reception in the same location, or will the ceremony be in a religious setting with the party to follow somewhere else? What the timeline might look like if you have a late morning church ceremony and evening reception, and how you will be traveling between venues. (Tip: Give clear directions to your guests when choosing multi-location wedding venues. Remind them how to get from one location to the other and what time they are expected to be at the next venue.)

Many couples forget to think of the time of year affecting the wedding day timeline. Most experienced wedding pros recommend your ceremony start time about an hour and a half before sunset. This gives enough time for the wedding ceremony and your portraits before it gets too dark. In December, the sun sets at 5:30 pm which would put your ceremony at 4:00 pm and a reception end time around 10:00 pm. If you wanted your wedding celebration to last late into the evening, take daylight savings into consideration. (Tip: Timeanddate.com is a great site to figure out the sunset time for your area) Wedding planning, it can be a bit overwhelming, and most pros agree that selecting your venue is one of the very first things couples should do. By starting your wedding venue search with the right information, you are saving yourself time, headache, and stress. Ask yourselves the right questions and make sure you are on the same page. The journey to finding the perfect wedding venue is supposed to be a fun one. Now take a breath and start searching! IDOYALL.COM | 211

10 Tips For Choosing a Wedding Date Lomonico Photography

on. The same goes for individual vendors. If you already know there is no other florist for you, call them and discuss particular dates that you are considering to assure that their calendar is free for those times.” -Laura Kane, Sarasota Manager of Truly Forever BridalCreate Your Vision

Popular dates book fast

While you may have thought selecting a wedding date was the simplest part of planning, there are many factors to consider when choosing those special numbers. We turned to some wedding pros for advice on selecting the best date. by Anna Coats

Let your wedding date choose you

“The style of your wedding can help you determine your date. If you always dreamt of a garden wedding you probably want to pick a date in early spring, whereas if you are a couple who loves dark rich colors fall or winter is probably more appropriate.” -Karen Cerboni, owner of EventFull Weddings

Consider your vendors’ availability

“Some wedding dates are dictated by the availability of vendors or venues that you may have already predetermined. If you have been dreaming of a particular venue for long before you were engaged, contact them immediately upon getting engaged and find out their availability. If they are a popular venue, they book quickly, and finding out when it is available will provide you with some dates to consider if the venue is one that you have your heart set 212

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

“If you have a venue or vendor in mind that is a must-have, then book with them months and possibly years in advance! Dates such as Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, weekends in October, and dates that numerically add up such as 2-2-22 or 2-22-22 are among the most popular! This will help you can plan accordingly.” -Miranda Gates, Limelight Photography

Be flexible

“Your date is not everything; your actual marriage to your favorite person and partner for life is! So many times we have couples reach out to us after their venue is already booked, being so sure they only want to work with us, and it breaks our heart to tell them that based on that date only, we are not able to work with them. This could be due to being fully booked that month, that year, or that day. If you’re flexible with your day, month, or time of year, it opens up a world of possibilities!” -Shannon Dewitt, owner of Dewitt for Love Photography

It gets hot in the south…Really hot (and rainy)

“Since so many couples dream about an outdoor ceremony, thinking about the weather before choosing a date is paramount. I like to use a handy little tool called a Farmer’s Almanac. This book gives extended weather predictions for the entire U.S. and Canada, and it’s always served me well! If you’re like me and couldn’t see yourself getting married in the heat, then I highly suggest sticking with a date in late January or early February. I always get lucky this time of year with highs in the mid-’60s-low ‘70s and lots of clear skies!” -John Campbell, owner and Principal Planner at John Campbell Weddings MbM Photography

Consider sunset

“Know the time of year and sunset. If you want your couple’s photos done after the ceremony during sunset know if daylight savings time is a factor.” -Kristen Jeffers, owner of Kristen Marie Photography

Josh Williams Photography

Christmas-themed wedding, consider that many venues install holiday decorations right after Thanksgiving. Many have strict policies against taking them down or can charge a steep fee to remove them and reinstall them.” -Tammy Waterman, owner of Special Moments Event Planning

Check the local event calendar

“Ask the wedding venue you are considering about any annual local events or a large convention over the dates you are considering. They can often affect the availability and price of guests’ rooms and local traffic. The local Chamber of Commerce or Convention and Visitors Bureau websites will usually have calendars.” –Tammy Waterman, owner of Special Moments Event Planning

Off-peak dates provide more options (and sometimes better pricing): Choose holiday wedding dates wisely

“Many couples look at dates that have a special meaning for them. The dates of your first date or engagement are often popular. Be cautious when looking at weddings around the holidays. While a Valentine’s Day wedding can sound romantic, keep in mind that the cost of flowers can come at a premium cost and floral designers who also have retail operations can be swamped. The same rule can apply to Mother’s Day. Weddings around Christmas and Thanksgiving can be amazing with lots of people coming home to spend time with family and friends, but that can also mean that many people have other plans that may involve them being out of town. If you don’t celebrate Christmas or want a

“We are seeing more and more couples opt for non-Saturdays, especially when having a more intimate wedding. This gives you a lot of flexibility with vendors who are typically booked on Saturdays. Budge-wise venues may have a smaller food and beverage minimum for non-Saturdays or photographers like who have intimate collections may offer a smaller number of hours if needed.” -Carrie Wildes, owner of Carrie Wildes Photography “For those couples who are flexible on dates, consider an off-season month or perhaps a Friday or Sunday celebration. Most wedding venues will offer reduced revenue minimums during these times; thus allowing you to possibly save on overall reception costs!” -Mary Barnett, Event Sales Manager at The Birchwood IDOYALL.COM | 213

wedding show

Planning a wedding is exciting, and you can get so many ideas from blogs, magazines, social media and even real weddings you attend. But one of the most valuable resources can be attending a wedding show where you can start relationships with multiple wedding professionals at one time. From beauty to backdrops, these pros make it their business – literally – to make your wedding your best day ever. While it can be so convenient to research wedding professionals by scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest, what you see on a beautifully designed website or a vendor’s frequently updated social media account does not necessarily mean a wedding vendor is a good fit. Before you put down a non-refundable deposit, we recommend that you meet them first. Talking with wedding professionals face-to-face allows you to make that all important personal connection where you can directly communicate your visions for your big day. While you won’t 220

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

have time for a full consult at a show, you can learn more about how your potential vendor conducts business, and see examples of their work up close. Wedding shows give you the opportunity to “interview” potential vendors. You can cross off those you don’t think are a good fit and begin those next steps with the ones you love. A lot of wedding show exhibitors will offer showonly specials or discounts that can save you money. Large shows usually have tons of free gifts and giveaways, while boutique shows have smaller events full of carefully cultivated, toptier vendors. Wedding planning is serious business, but wedding shows are lots of fun. From runway fashion shows, free champagne, Wgifts, and prizes, to great food and wedding cake tastings, wedding shows are the perfect place to start your planning, find those last minute details or just celebrate being engaged and in love!

impression THE PERFECT INVITATION When your guests receive their wedding invitation, they will immediately form an impression of the ceremony to come. That is why selecting the invitation - the paper, the style, the wording - is an important first step in your wedding plans. Experienced stationers are your best guide, and their advice is available at no charge when you purchase your invitations in their store. Not only do stationers offer assistance on the invitations, but they can also provide helpful hints on when to order and mail them while also determining proper postage budgeting and a myriad of other details. Take time to select your invitations and put thought into the decision. Feel the paper samples. What impression do they give? Understated elegance? Fun? Whimsical? Romantic? 232

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Your stationer will know the etiquette for proper wording, including unusual situations such as divorced parents, second marriages, professional titles, religious customs, and so on. Envelopes should be hand addressed in black or charcoal gray ink. You may also choose professional hand calligraphy or an automated calligraphy machine for the envelopes. To determine how many invitations to order, count each couple and single guest, each attendant, parents, family and clergy. Order extra invitations to handle surprises and extra envelopes for addressing mistakes. Be certain to pre-stamp reply cards, weigh the complete invitation to ensure correct postage and remember to select attractive stamps.

Unplugged Weddings The what and why of going unplugged BE FULLY PRESENT In the midst of all this online connectedness, we’re viewing the world through our phone screens and camera lenses and missing out on true human connections. But people are beginning to wake up and realize just how immersed we all are in our phones and tablets, and there’s a movement to change that. This movement has reached the wedding industry. Brides and grooms want to have face-to-face connections with their guests — especially during the ceremony — instead of staring out into a sea of electronics. If guests are experiencing your big day from behind a screen, are they truly experiencing it? Your wedding is comprised of some of the most important moments of your life; making it unplugged encourages guests to live in the moment with you. Simply put: It encourages your loved ones to be here now.

SOCIAL MEDIA SPOILERS Imagine: You haven’t seen the groom all day. You can’t wait for that “first look.” While you’re getting ready, the Maid of Honor snaps a photo of you in your dress and veil. She has a few minutes of down time, so she posts the photo on Instagram. The groom, also with a few minutes to spare and out of habit, checks for Instagram updates and the first look is spoiled. A first

look via social media isn’t exactly the stuff of dreams! Brides and grooms are avoiding such spoilers altogether by declaring their wedding “unplugged.”

LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS There are few things that annoy a professional photographer more than an amateur trying to do their job. Overly zealous uncles who jump in the aisle and cousins who stand on church pews can, at best, be an eyesore in your professional photos and can, at worst, completely ruin oncein-a-lifetime moments. Imagine your “kiss the bride” moment blocked by an uncle who stepped into the aisle to snap a photo. The professional photographer didn’t see it coming and his or her hands are tied. Nothing can bring that moment back — it’s lost to a grainy photo on Uncle Al’s smart phone. Another issue is wandering eyes. When your professional photographer stages a group shot of your newly combined families and Uncle Al decides to take the photo too, eyes will wander, not knowing which camera to look at first. This makes the final professional photo just look silly! One way to avoid all of these problems is to have an unplugged wedding, or at least an unplugged ceremony.

In our technology-crazed world, it’s become a habit to check our phones every few minutes, to post a constant stream of status updates to Twitter and Facebook, and to document any and everything on Instagram. At an unplugged wedding, the couple kindly asks that everyone in attendance turn off cell phones, cameras, and other digital distractions during the ceremony and/or reception. 244

When A Wedding Pro Gets Married

I’m Kayce, the owner and lead photographer of Kayce Stork Photography & Films, and I specialize in wedding photography alongside Trevor, my fiance` and our lead videographer. One of the most asked questions we’ve heard is how we chose our own wedding vendors. Hire a Planner or Coordinator

Even as a wedding professional, I hired an event designer and day-of coordinator to help with my big day. I know without a doubt that I do not want to be bothered on my wedding day with decorating, or a thousand vendor questions! I deserve to have my wedding day be stress-free and that’s why I chose to have professionals to help us with just that!

Choose Your Vendors Early

I have planned my own wedding VERY QUICKLY, three and a half months to be exact! Because of this, I knew I had reach out to the vendors I wanted and beready to send retainers and sign agreements. The truth is that wedding pros book up rather quickly. Don’t wait too long to book the vendors that you want to work with, or you could lose the date.

Know Your Vision

Trevor and I knew we wanted a photography style similar to ours, but we wanted to stay local. You would probably think I wanted someone to photograph just like I do, but I was very re268

alistic with myself in understanding that would never happen, and to be honest, we were okay with hiring other artists to do what they do! I also wanted someone we could be comfortable spending our day with. I can’t recommend this step enough!

Read Your Contracts and Ask Questions

This wasn’t a huge deal for us because we’re in this industry, but even I had a few questions for my event coordinator before signing our contract for her services. When booking anything for your wedding, don’t simply skim the highlights. Take time to read their agreements and ask questions if you need things to be explained. Any true professional will not take offense to answering your questions.

Don’t Stress the Little Things

I hope you all remember this piece of advice that I’ve reminded myself of more times than I can count: It doesn’t matter if something doesn’t come out perfect, or exactly as I have planned, as long as Trevor and I are married and happy at the end of the night. That’s ALL that matters!

The Language of Love How to Incorporate Your Love Language in Your Wedding Day Steph Sorenson 292

|

I DO Y’ALL DIGITAL WINTER/SPRING 2022

Making sure you and your partner are both feeling loved is a HUGE aspect of any relationship, especially on your wedding day. Enter Dr. Gary Chapman’s 5 Love Languages! We’ve listed what each love language is and a few examples of how to incorporate your and your partner’s style into your wedding day! Physical Touch “To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch.” Consider a first touch instead of a first look. Make sure your first dance is a slow song. Steal some kisses throughout the night. Hold hands as you make your rounds during the reception.

Words of Affirmation “This language uses words to affirm others.” Vows are important to this love language style! Make sure they’re original and from your heart. Read your vows to each other privately before the ceremony. Write a letter to one another beforehand. Include a note with a gift . Consider singing a song to your spouse during the reception. Also, this doesn’t necessarily have to be just for your future spouse. Words of Affirmation can also come from your other loved ones who are doing special readings during the ceremony or making heartfelt speeches. Josh Williams Photography

White Buffalo Weddings

Quality Time “This language is all about giving the other person your full attention.” Think about having appetizers or dinner together in a separate room during cocktail hour before you make your reception entrance. A first look is a definite “to do” item! Have your own sweetheart table. Go the nontraditional route and spend the day getting ready together! IDOYALL.COM | 293

Acts of Service “For these people, actions speak louder than words.” Have their favorite food delivered during the day when they’re getting ready. Arrange a surprise for the morning of like a massage or a bottle of champagne or his favorite craft beer delivered. Get them a drink at the bar or a snack during the reception. Make their plate of food while they’re busy. Organize & pack everything in the getaway car. Side note: Your wedding planner may do some of these for you (that’s their job), however, little actions throughout the day will still mean a lot to your spouse-to-be coming from you!

Receiving Gifts “For some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a gift.” Surprise them with a live wedding painter to document the wedding. Give a notebook full of written letters throughout your engagement or a sentimental scrapbook of your relationship. Consider a special piece of jewelry, an engraved watch, or cuff links. Get them a signature wedding day scent: a perfume or cologne that will always remind them of their wedding day. Amaze them with a book of boudoir photos. Give embroidered handkerchiefs for your spouse-to-be or your wedding party too! Aislinn Kate Photography
