ACTIVITY GUIDE

A MESSAGE FROM JULIE DAHLEN Interim Director of Library and Recreation Services

“To change one’s life: start immediately. Do it flamboyantly.”

Philosopher William James provides an apt invitation to enjoy the first Activity Guide of 2011 - and my first as Interim Director of Library and Recreation Services. We are all challenged to embrace the New Year, rich with opportunities to change our lives. Working on a New Year’s resolution? The Library is a perfect partner as you return to college or start down a new career path. Meeting new fitness goals? Centennial Park offers several classes to strengthen and invigorate. Resolved to give back to your community this year? This Activity Guide is dedicated to our amazing foundations, advisory bodies, and volunteers who offer so much in the way of advice and support. We couldn’t do it without them! Whatever you do in 2011, do it flamboyantly, with help from your Department of Library and Recreation Services!

Art at the City Library & Special Events for All Ages At the Library… ART AT THE CITY LIBRARY Look for these talented artists and their free exhibits in the Paso Robles City Library, 1000 Spring St. The Library is open Monday through Friday 10:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. January: Marguerite Lyons Marguerite Lyons strives to capture the spiritual magnificence of local oak trees as they are silent witnesses to the centuries of dramatic evolution of San Luis Obispo County. She engages them in their starkness, void of all leaves, when the power of the oak is captured in its vastness of color. February: Richard Hansen Richard Hansen, a well-known local nature photographer, has exhibited his photos at many functions at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History and other local events. Since 1980, he has been assisting and co-leading local photography classes. His black and white and color photographs of modern and steam trains will be featured. March: Fred Ventura Artist Fred Ventura will exhibit mathematical art during the month of March. Ventura works in a variety of media, but for this show he will focus primarily on digital techniques. Ventura has a Ph.D. in education from the University of California at Santa Barbara where he also studied painting and drawing as an undergraduate. April: Margrete Koreska Margrete Koreska was always fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. In 1993, she took up oil painting under artist Margo Lennantz and trained at Glendale College. Since 2008, she has been studying with John Barnard who has greatly influenced her development as an artist. Painting with oil is

Activity Guide, Winter/Spring 2011

her favorite medium. She often uses a palette knife to obtain more textures and bold colors, and likes to experiment with semi-realism and semi-abstract. May: Festival of the Arts In celebration of Festival of the Arts 2011, public murals created at the 2009 and 2010 events will be on display in the Library. Come and enjoy the bold and colorful expression of the community’s collective artistic imagination.

County. She engages them in their starkness, void of all leaves, when the power of the oak is captured in vastness of color. It is history that gnarled their branches, stole their leaves, and bent their glory. In communion with these giants, Lyons creates her paintings. February: Richard Hansen Richard Hansen, a well-known local nature photographer, has exhibited his photos at many Morro Bay Museum of Natural History functions and nearby events. He is a retired microbiologist who began to get serious about photography in 1976 when he bought his first Single Lens Reflex camera, a Canon FTBn. He has been on the Central Coast since 1980, where he met Joe Dickerson and George Lepp, and has been assisting and co-leading photography classes with them for over 20 years. Recently, Hansen has indulged his passion for trains by following and shooting rail activity in the 10 western states. His black and white and color photographs of modern and steam trains will be featured. March: Fred Ventura Artist Fred Ventura will exhibit mathematical art during the month of March. His show has been organized in support of Pi Day, March 14th (3.14) in order to encourage the creative exploration of mathematics. Ventura is an educational software developer with a background in mathematics instruction. He works in a variety of media, but for this show he will focus primarily on digital techniques. Ventura has a Ph.D. in education from the University of California at Santa Barbara where he also studied painting and drawing as an undergraduate.

April: Margrete Koreska Growing up in Denmark, Margrete Koreska was always fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. After moving to Southern California in 1993, she took up oil painting with Margot Lennartz, an accomplished artist, and trained at Glendale College. Painting on canvas became her obsession. In 2005, she discovered the charm and beauty of Paso Robles and it became her new home. Since 2008, she has been studying with John Barnard who has greatly influenced her development as an artist. Painting with oil is her favorite medium, and she loves the feel and ease of blending.

She has appeared on and off Broadway and has made television appearances in Boston Public, The Practice, The Division and Beverly Hills 90210. Satie also held the recurring role of Ida Pfeiffer (Paul’s mom) on The Wonder Years. In “Coming to America—Transformations,” Satie provides nine intimate portraits of women from El Salvador, Afghanistan, Armenia, Cambodia, Iran, Iraq, India, the former Yugoslavia and Russia. She tells her compelling story through narrative and dance. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK April 10 - 16 Each year, the City of Paso Robles honors its many volunteers during National Volunteer Week. In a proclamation read at a City Council meeting, the Mayor recognizes the volunteers’ immense donation of time and talent and also conveys the city’s acknowledgment that without them, city service levels across a variety of programs would not be as impressive as they are. National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Since then, every U.S. President has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Throughout the year, the City of Paso Robles benefits from the commitment to volunteerism of over 500 area residents who donate their time in Emergency Services,

Public Works, the Police Department, the City Manager’s Office, and the Department of Library and Recreation Services. To all who volunteer for the City of Paso Robles, thank you!

LIBRARY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2010 Library Volunteer Nan Madding was honored as the Library Volunteer of the Year 2010 at the Paso Robles City Library’s annual volunteer reception in November. Nan began her service to the Library in August 2008 as a 6-week Express Program volunteer and has not only stayed on as a Circulation Desk volunteer, but has taken on a number of other important duties. Currently, she serves as the Friends of the Library president, manages the Friends gift store just off the library lobby, and coordinates the group’s monthly book sales. Her flexibility in tasks and her willingness to step in are just two of the many qualities cited as reasons for her selection. “This is the ninth year the Library has presented a Library Volunteer of the Year Award and we couldn’t be happier to award it this year to Nan,” said Interim Library Manager Kris Bell. Previous winners are Jean Schubert, 2002; Janine Kramer, 2003; Audrey Kramer, 2004; Ann Martinez, 2005; Denise Surber, 2006; Joan Case, 2007; Mike Reagan, 2008; Cappy Culver, 2009. Nan’s name will be added to theirs on the perpetual plaque in the Library. The annual volunteer reception recognizes the 130 Library volunteers and the 16,000plus hours they contribute each year in pursuit of excellence in library service. To learn more about opportunities for volunteering, call Suzanne, 237-3870.
