Welcome Our New City Librarian The City of Paso Robles is pleased to welcome City Librarian Angelica Fortin to our Library team. In her new position at the helm of the Paso Robles City Library, Angelica will oversee the operations of the Paso Robles City Library, including strategic planning, personnel management, budget preparation, and marketing of library materials and programs. “We welcome Angelica’s contemporary view of public library service,” affirmed Library and Recreation Services Director, Julie Dahlen. “Not only will she aptly lead the Library in the digital age, Angelica is keenly prepared to meet the unique information needs of our community.” For the past 10 years, Angelica has worked for the San Diego County Library system, most recently serving as the county’s Program Services Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, Training Coordinator and Bookmobile Supervisor. In this role, she supervised critical support services to 33 branch libraries as well as two bookmobiles in the San Diego County Library system, an area that spans over 4,000 square miles. A native of San Diego, Angelica is looking forward to becoming an integral part of the Paso Robles community. “Getting to know this area and the people that our Library serves is a top priority for me,” she says. Empowering a community through Library service has been a driving force in Fortin’s career. “Libraries open the world to people by providing resources that empower community members in so many ways” says Fortin. “Libraries offer a taste of something that can transform a life, from offering services to help our citizens become employable to opening the door for children to a lifelong quest for knowledge and discovery.” This opportunity for transformation and self-empowerment is the driving force behind Fortin’s love of Library service. “Lately, I’ve been asking myself, ‘where is my arrow pointing?” Angelica reflected. “Having had the opportunity to serve as a library leader in my community for over a decade, I was ready for a new adventure.” We’re so thrilled that Angelica’s arrow was pointing north to Paso Robles! Please join us in welcoming Angelica to our Library and our community.

Municipal Indoor Pool Andee Parker 6M - 3Y Monday & Wednesday 11:00 - 11:30 a.m. June 1 – 27 July 6 – 27 August 1 - 24 $70/8 classes

BASIC PROGRAMS Infants, six to twelve months, learn to roll over from a face down position in the water onto their backs to relax, breathe. Babies will learn to roll and float fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Learning these skills takes approximately 12 to 20 lessons. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Parent participation may be required. Reusable swim diaper if appropriate.

Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Reusable swim diaper may be required. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace. Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination. Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards maintenance classes will be issued. Graduates may sign up for Fundays.

swim-float-swim sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while reducing the likelihood of aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely.

the people and the lively discussions. Still others like to send a message to their family that books and reading are an important part of their lives. We love to have new members, and hope you will join us at our next meeting. Call Karen Christiansen at 237-3870 for more information. This summer, we will be discussing books with a Brazilian/Olympic theme.

June Book: State of Wonder By Ann Patchett Patchett’s State of Wonder is the story of a quest for a miracle drug. Readers are taken on a journey that addresses morals and reveals miracles, delves into science and explores the theme of sacrifice all set in the Amazon rainforest. The New York Times Book Review says “Expect miracles when you read Ann Patchett’s fiction.”

Wednesday, June 22 6:00 -9:00 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St. Learn a new crafting skill at the Library’s Fused Glass Workshop with instruction by glass artist Sheri Klein. Fused glass techniques date back to ancient Egyptian times, and developed as a fine art in the 1960’s. Glass is layered then fired in a kiln, causing the glass to fuse. Signups for this program will begin on June 13, and space is limited. There is a $5 materials fee.

Steel Drum Duet The Chrome Addicts Friday, June 24 6:00-7:00 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St.

Studio in San Luis Obispo. The steel drums that are played by Patty Dee and Andrea Iversen are chromed 55-gallon oil drums that have been fashioned into beautiful looking and sounding instruments, thus the name The Chrome Addicts! Their repertoire includes traditional caribbean songs, afro-cuban, calypso, reggae, jazz and pop arrangements. Andrea plays tenor pan, Patty on double seconds, accompanied by backing music to enhance the sound. The Chrome Addicts regularly perform in music festivals in West Virginia and Denver as well as many local venues.

Zumba for Seniors Thursday, June 30 2:30 p.m. @ Library Conference Room 1000 Spring St. If you have heard about Zumba and want to try it, now is your chance! This dance fitness class is fueled by a Latin beat similar to the one our Olympic athletes will experience in Rio this summer. Put on your comfy clothes and join others ages 50+ for this easy low-intensity workout. This is an introductory class. Participants will learn the moves step-by-step to help them learn the dances.

Magician

everyone’s favorite magician, Gerald Joseph, returns for another excellent summer performance. Gerald’s unique mix of magic and comedy will keep you laughing while wondering . . . “How did he do that?” Don’t miss this show that’s fun for the entire family.

READING GROUPS Calling All Readers! If you are a member of a book group or want to get a group started, the Paso Robles City Library has something special just for you: Reading Group Kits. The kits include ten copies of a proven title and laminated discussion questions – all in a handy book bag for easy transportation. Reading Group Kits are designed to aid your group in meeting planning; ensuring that each member has a copy of the title to read and that the discussion is thought provoking. Kits may be checked out for six weeks to give groups plenty of time to read and discuss the title before they must be returned. We have a variety of titles available, both fiction and non-fiction, and appealing to both teen and adult groups. Newer titles added to the collection are: • Barbarian Nurseries (Tobar) Cuesta College’s Book of the Year selection • Sophie’s World (Gaardner) • The Pianist (Szpilman) • Cuckoo’s Calling (Galbraith) • Enrique’s Journey (Nazario) If you are a member of a book group, visit the Paso Robles City Library soon to choose your group’s next title. For more information about Reading Group Kits, contact Karen Christiansen, Adult Services Librarian, at 237-3870.

PROJECT LIFESAVER

SCHOLARSHIPS

Formerly, our RSVP of the Central Coast embraced all nonprofits or government agencies seeking our assistance in recruiting and placing senior volunteers. Because the federally funded RSVP program decided to focus more on core programs such as food, transportation, housing, and companionship, our Board felt it wise to establish the CCCV program as a companion to RSVP. This allows us to continue serving as many nonprofits as request our services, regardless of focus.

Project Lifesaver (providing a safety net for those with cognitive disabilities) relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search and rescue team of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department. Applicants who are enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program wear the personalized wristband that emits a unique tracking signal. When a caregiver or parent calls 911 and states that the applicant is a member of the Project Lifesaver program and that the applicant is missing, a search and rescue team responds to the wandering individual’s last known area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. Find out more at www.projectlifesaverofslo.org/ or call 805-548-0909 or 805-544-8740.

Available through City of Paso Robles The City of Paso Robles, Department of Library and Recreation Services, has a Senior Scholarship Fund to provide monetary assistance for seniors who wish to participate in recreation programs but may not be able to afford the registration fees. The Department accepts contributions from local businesses, service clubs, individuals, and organizations to assist in providing senior scholarships. Scholarships may be used for City of Paso Robles, Department of Library and Recreation Services programs or activities only. For more information, please call Recreation Services at Centennial Park, 237-3988, Monday - Friday from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m.

sustaining as there is no federal funding available for it. We must rely on businesses, individuals and local government to act as sponsors. Please check out our new website www.seniorvolunteers.org to learn more about all of our programs and the many volunteer opportunities available to you. Thank you for helping us spread the word. Call us at 544-8740 to find your perfect volunteer match.

Annual Giveaway Raffle is Back!

The new program will also enable us to recruit a slightly younger age group (50+).
