A Message From Julie Dahlen, Director of Library and Recreation Services Ah summertime . . . time to curl up with a good book? Yes, actually. As the lazy summer vacation months approach, City Library staff is busily preparing its annual bevy of programming attracting readers young and old to enjoy books the whole summer through. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated the merits of keeping youngsters reading during their summer break from school. Positive interactions with books and reading help prevent students from backsliding academically—losses which are cumulative from summer to summer without continued exposure to the written word. Adults who read in the home are excellent role models and are less likely to use the television set as summer entertainment for their children. And, it is just plain fun to visit the Library! Browse the pages of our summer Activity Guide to plan your Library visits around craft activities, adult programs, and the dog days of summer when enjoying a book or magazine in air conditioning will be a little bit of heaven. Of course, we hope you will also visit the Municipal Pool, attend Friday Concerts in the City Park, walk or bike on City trails, and picnic near the pond at Barney Schwartz Park—you can bring a book with you! Ah summertime . . . courtesy of the Department of Library and Recreation Services. Activity Guide, June - August 2013

Look for these talented artists and other free exhibits in the Paso Robles City Library, 1000 Spring Street

June Artist of the Month: Maureen Handshy

Working in oils on and off for many years, Lundstrom's display will include landscapes, seascapes, and animals.

August Artist of the Month: Parks 4 Pups

Local quilter, Maureen Handshy, finds great satisfaction in assembling fragmented pieces to see a pattern emerge. The patterns she chooses have to have something that will keep her interested over a prolonged period of time. Quilting is Handshy's medium and she likes to work with 100% cotton fabrics in vibrant colors. "A lot of pieces go to friends and family and there's no greater thrill than to surprise a loved one with a quilt that they weren't expecting." Currently, Handshy juggles three art passions – she cooks at a bed and breakfast in Cayucos, decorates their lobby with floral arrangements, and then goes home to work on her quilts. She enthuses, "Life is sweet!"

July Artist of the Month: Doris Lundstrom Doris Lundstrom was born in Chicago and came to the Paso Robles area two years ago after leaving the La Quinta desert.

Enjoy animal photographs from the Parks 4 Pups group during the month. Their exhibit will feature professional and amateur photographers' best photographs from Dog Splash Days of 2012. Featured photos were taken by Jeff Bowen, Roger Bowsky, Nick Monzo, Gail Gresham, and Char Holway. Parks 4 Pups is a non-profit organization that promotes parks and recreational programs for dogs and their owners. Groundbreaking Reads: Adult Summer Reading Program

Wednesday, June 19, 7:00 p.m. The California Master Gardeners Program of San Luis Obispo County will be teaching us about edible landscaping. Thursday, July 11, 7:00 p.m. Break ground with technology; iFixit will be showing us how to repair all those electronic gadgets we have all come to know and love. Thursday, August 8, 7:00 p.m. John Jasbinsek, from the physics department at Cal Poly, will be joining us to discuss the science of earthquakes, answering the question, “What makes the ground break?”

Monday, June 3 - Saturday, August 17 “Groundbreaking Reads” is the theme of the Paso Robles City Library’s 6th annual Adult Summer Reading Program. Participants this year will be encouraged to break free of their usual reading habits as they work their way through magma, bedrock, and topsoil, earning prizes along the way to celebrate each level of reading achieved. New this year, for those who complete the program but want to keep reading: For every book read beyond the completion of the regular program, participants will earn a ticket to enter a drawing for a Google Nexus 7 tablet by Asus, to download eBooks from the Library and much more!

We will also be showing a series of Groundbreaking Films. Sign up for the Adult Summer Reading Program beginning Monday, June 3. Detailed program information will be available in the Library and at www.prcity. com/library beginning in June. Contact Karen, 237-3870, for more information.

Thursday, June 20, 7:00 p.m. This June, we will discuss Arcadia by Lauren Groff. This novel examines the life of a commune on the grounds of a decaying mansion from its romantic utopian hopeful beginnings through its heyday in the 1970’s.

LIBRARY ADULT BOOK GROUP

Expand Your Horizons with the Adult Book Club! June 20, July 18 & August 15 Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Library Conference Room

The Library is planning several programs as well to help dig you out of your summer doldrums. www.prcity.com/recreation

The Library’s Adult Book Group has been meeting for over 15 years, enjoying lively discussions and reading a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction. Why join a book group? Most members want to broaden their reading interests, but others enjoy the people and the lively discussions. Still others like to send a message to their family that books and reading are an important part of their lives.

41

Thursday, July 18, 7:00 p.m. July’s selection, Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman, takes us to the lighthouse on Janus Rock where a boat carrying a dead man and a living infant has washed ashore. The lighthouse keeper and his wife claim the child as their own, at least until they return to life on the mainland.

Pickleball is fun, very social, and you get an excellent workout with less stress on the joints than the game of tennis.

The instructor, Jack Hodges, an avid tennis player and tennis instructor, discovered the advantages of Pickleball after retiring from coaching baseball. Jack is pictured below (seated on the right in front of the net) with his newest converts to the sport, Lewis Middle School eighth grade P.E. students. Jack set up a demo for the class and the students were hooked!

Kendo Literally called “the Way of the Sword,” this is the modern sport of Japanese fencing based on traditional Kenjutsu “sword fighting.” See Sports in Youth Section.

Pickleball

Jack has equipment for you to use so you can try the sport - so drop in anytime. Contact Jack at 949-547-2251 for details or go to his new website for information, www.pickelballpasorobles.shutterfly.com.

Here's your chance to try a sport that gets you into the great outdoors or will help you review and prepare for fishing season! Students will learn the basics and the feel of fly casting in this 6-hour session. You will be introduced to roll casting, shooting line, and improving distance casting. Please bring your fly rod, leader, sunglasses for Activity Guide, June - August 2013

Pickleball is a racquet sport that has been heralded as "the fastest growing sport in the country." It is like tennis - but different. Like racquet ball - but different. The wall is like a wiffle ball - but different. The court is like tennis - but smaller. We use a paddle - but this is not paddle tennis. The net is 2" shorter than a tennis net.

Andee has been teaching aquatics for the City of Paso Robles for over 18 years. Many of the young people in our community have taken one or more of her swim classes, such as Parent & Me, Water Exploration, and Adapted Aquatics. Besides making swimming fun and safe for children, Andee also teaches indoor Aqua Fit classes for adults in the warm‐water Municipal Pool. And if that isn’t enough to keep anyone busy, she lifeguards for lap swim as pictured on the left. We recently received a letter of commendation for the professional way Andee handled a situation during lap swim. Here is an excerpt from the letter. “I would like to commend Andee, our lifeguard at the lap swimming program for the tactful and professional way she handled a gentleman showing some stress after swimming. She made sure he was OK, yet she did it in a way that offered him a gentle, caring, private assessment without creating a scene. I could tell that was very important to the gentleman. Andee is to be commended for providing for his safety and still maintaining a safe and comforting atmosphere. On a daily basis, she is always friendly, welcoming and professional.” L.C. Thank you, Andee! Our Library and Recreation Department deeply appreciates your contribution to the community through our aquatic’s program.

Activity Registration Form - see next page or download

Registration: Jesusita Martinez Activity Enrollment

at www.prcity.com/recreation

A minimum number of participants is required to hold programs. The Department of Library and Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel a program that does not meet this minimum and participants will receive a full refund or credit. It is highly recommended that you pre-register as early as possible to avoid programs being cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Activity Refund For ongoing classes, participants may drop the class after they attend the first meeting and receive a partial refund, but they must file for a refund before the second class. No refunds will be issued after the second class. If the participant cancels, he/she must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office, and will be subject to a minimum $7 service charge. Refunds for credit card or cash registrations will be mailed from the City Finance Department approximately two weeks after the request is received. Refunds on checks will be issued after the check has cleared the bank, which is generally within 30 days of receipt. In order to avoid the $7 fee, a participant may choose to keep the money on account to be used for another class. For classes only meeting once, you must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office at least five business days before the class starts. Aquatic Cancellation/Refund If your class has been cancelled by the department, you will receive a full refund OR the choice to transfer to another aquatic activity. A refund check will be mailed from the City Finance Department per the activity refund policy above. All customer initiated cancellations are NON-REFUNDABLE but credit may be applied to another activity offered. Scholarships Scholarships for all types of recreation programs; including camps, classes, and sports programs, are available for income-qualifying seniors and youth. Call 237-3988 or stop by Centennial Park Registration Office for more information. Activity Guide, June - August 2013
