ACTIVITY GUIDE

Department of Library and Recreation Services

A MESSAGE FROM JULIE DAHLEN Director of Library and Recreation Services "One of the virtues of being very young is that you don't let the facts get in the way of your imagination." — Sam Levenson First birthday celebrations generate a myriad of emotions. Exhaustion, awe at the birthday baby’s milestones, and visions of future accomplishments are as much a part of the occasion as cupcakes and balloons. This Activity Guide marks my first year as Interim Director of Library and Recreation Services for the City of Paso Robles, not quite the same occasion as my own first birthday (note the vintage photo) or those of my two children, but reason to celebrate, nonetheless. The year began with the rebirth of the department itself. The hard facts of a troubled economy and a City hiring freeze did not discourage us. Instead, City staff allowed our imagination to take flight, exploring innovative ways of continuing to provide quality recreation and library experiences in Paso Robles. In true “it-takesa-village” spirit, Paso Roblans stepped up to conduct adult softball, youth T-ball, and adult volleyball. Staffing our summer Concerts in the Park would have been a daunting task were it not for a huge volunteer effort from JLohr Vineyards and Firestone Walker Brewery Company. Long-time City collaborators such as the YMCA, REC and Library Foundations, Friends of the Library, and the Youth Sports Council rose to the occasion as well, providing expertise, “elbow grease” and financial support to keep the LRS “baby” on its feet. As we welcome 2012, Library and Recreation staff will continue to learn, to grow and to explore what can be, no matter the challenges ahead. Thank you, Paso Robles, for your support along the way. — Julie

Special Art & Events… Library Exhibits January LIBRARY EXHIBITS ARTIST OF THE MONTH: MARGRETE KORESKA As a child, Margrete Koreska was always fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. After moving from Denmark to Southern California in 1993, she took up oil painting with Margot Lennartz, an accomplished artist, as well as receiving training at Glendale College. Painting on canvas became her obsession. In 2005, she discovered the charm and beauty of Paso Robles and it became her new home. Since 2008, she has been studying with John Barnard, who has greatly influenced her development as an artist. Painting with oil is her favorite medium, and she loves the feel and ease of blending. She often uses a palette knife to obtain more textures and bold colors and likes to experiment with semi-realism and semi-abstract. Library Display Case: Recreational Opportunities for Winter & Spring at Centennial Park and Beyond!

February LIBRARY EXHIBITS ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SANDI HELLER Sandi Heller is captivated by the Central Coast’s wonderful mountains, abundant flowers, and rugged coastline and likes to capture the shadows on the hills and cliff faces in the early mornings. She is drawn to trees and works to capture the essence

of the gnarled or stately oak, the elegant eucalyptus with the weeping leaves, or the white bark and autumn colors of the sycamore. Heller has long been interested in wildflowers and excited by the variety to be found around San Luis Obispo, so flowers are another frequent subject of her paintings. ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SUE LINSLEY For Sue Linsley, photography has been a passion since high school. A native Californian, she has lived in Atascadero for 22 years and considers herself very fortunate to have raised her two daughters in this beautiful area. Living here has afforded her the opportunity to renew her passion for nature photography. Linsley hopes her Yosemite photographs will encourage people to discover and appreciate the natural beauty that is so close. Library Display Case: Ceramics created by Jeanne Aird’s 8th grade class at Flamson

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: PAUL MCCLOSKEY Artist Paul McCloskey likes to think of his photography as painting with a sacred light. He believes this to be as much an artistic technique as a philosophy on the creative process and living creatively. He attempts to portray and communicate not only the breathtaking beauty in nature, but also the ambiance and spirit of it using natural light to help “paint” his photographs. McCloskey considers himself to be somewhat of a “digital alchemist,” and refers to his art/work as “Photo-Painting,” - a convergence of today’s digital photography/imaging technology with digital printmaking and the fine art of plein-air painting. “It’s all about light,” McCloskey states. Gary Pasky, who has a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Okinawan Karate, has been teaching SHORIN-RYU KARATE at Centennial Park for the past 5 years. His classes appeal to all ages and the great family discounts that are available have made this a popular intergenerational activity. In November 2011, Gary attended an international Karate Camp in El Centro, California. Participants came from countries as distant as Zimbabwe, Denmark, England, Argentina, Canada, Okinawa, and Japan. The quality of instructors was amazing and one of the instructors was a 9th Degree Black Belt – just one level below the highest that is attainable. The highlight of the Camp was a competition on Saturday that involved over 250 participants demonstrating the katas, or forms, of Karate in front of a group of accomplished experts in this style of martial arts. After four rounds of competition, Gary emerged as the winner! Congratulations, Gary, on the recognition you so deserve – and thank you for making Karate such a great experience for everyone in your class! JAPANESE MARTIAL ARTS: AIKIDO This Japanese martial art is based on joint locks, pins and throws. Aikido is almost completely based on technique and timing, not raw physical strength or speed making it ideal for a wider range of people than most traditional martial arts where strength and speed are more critical in execution. Widely misunderstood in the West as being “purely defensive”' or excessively philosophical, Aikido is a martial art that is as subtle as it is effective. Jason Carter has been training in the Japanese martial arts of Kendo, Iaido and Aikido under some of the top Masters in the world for over 17 years. Questions? Call Jason, 237-1245. Look for these talented artists and other free exhibits in the Paso Robles City Library, 1000 Spring St.

FEBRUARY ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SANDI HELLER Sandi Heller is captivated by the Central Coast’s wonderful mountains, abundant flowers, and rugged coastline and likes to capture the shadows on the hills and cliff faces in the early mornings. She is drawn to trees and works to capture the essence of the gnarled or stately oak, the elegant eucalyptus with the weeping leaves, or the white bark and autumn colors of the sycamore. Heller has long been interested in wildflowers and excited by the variety to be found around San Luis Obispo, so flowers are another frequent subject in her paintings. Library Display Case: Friends of the Library – Great gifts for Valentine’s Day!

JANUARY ARTIST OF THE MONTH: MARGRETE KORESKA As a child, Margrete Koreska was always fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. After moving from Denmark to Southern California in 1993, she took up oil painting with Margot Lennartz, an accomplished artist, as well as received training at Glendale College. Painting on canvas became her obsession. In 2005, she discovered the charm and beauty of Paso Robles and it became her new home. Since 2008 she has been studying with John Barnard, who

MARCH ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SUE LINSLEY For Sue Linsley, photography has been a passion since high school. A native Californian, she has lived in Atascadero for 22 years and considers herself very fortunate to have raised her two daughters in this beautiful area. Living here has afforded her the opportunity to renew her passion for nature photography. Linsley hopes her Yosemite photographs will encourage people to dis-

has greatly influenced her development as an artist. Painting with oil is her favorite medium, and she loves the feel and ease of blending. She often uses a palette knife to obtain more textures and bold colors and likes to experiment with semi-realism and semi-abstract. APRIL ARTISTS OF THE MONTH: BRUSHMARKS EXHIBITION Aspiring North County teen artists were invited to submit artwork for the Library’s 6th Annual Brushmarks Juried Art Exhibit. Submissions were accepted in two categories painting and drawing - and prizes were awarded by artist and juror Jack Johnson at the Exhibit reception. Entries selected for the show are the featured display for this month. Library Display Case: Friends of the Library – Check out the great gifts for Mother’s Day! MAY ARTIST OF THE MONTH: PAUL MCCLOSKEY Artist Paul McCloskey likes to think of his photography as painting with a sacred light. He believes this to be as much an artistic technique as a philosophy on the creative process and living creatively. He attempts to portray and communicate not only the breathtaking beauty in nature, but also the ambiance and spirit of it using natural light to help “paint” his photographs. McCloskey considers himself to be somewhat of a “digital alchemist,” and refers to his art/work as “Photo-Painting,” — a convergence of today’s digital photography/imaging technology with digital printmaking and the fine art of plein-air painting. “It’s all about light,” McCloskey states. Widely misunderstood in the West as being “purely defensive” or excessively philosophical, Aikido is a martial art that is as subtle as it is effective. DEPARTMENT POLICIES

Activity Enrollment A minimum number of participants is required to hold programs. The Department of Library and Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel a program that does not meet this minimum and participants will receive a full refund or credit. It is highly recommended that you pre-register as early as possible to avoid programs being cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Activity Refund For ongoing classes, participants may drop the class after they attend the first meeting and receive a partial refund, but they must file for a refund before the second class. No refunds will be issued after the second class. If the participant cancels, he/she must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office, and will be subject to a minimum $7 service charge. Refunds for credit card or cash registrations will be mailed from the City Finance Department approximately two weeks after the request is received. Refunds on checks will be issued after the check has cleared the bank, which is generally within 30 days of receipt. In order to avoid the $7 fee, a participant may choose to keep the money on account to be used for another class.
